Watch Mimi Faust Talk about Losing Her Mother to Scientology

Categories: Scientology

MimiFaust9.jpg

Viacom has blocked some YouTube versions of the therapy scene from Monday night's Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta that features Mimi Faust talking about her mother choosing Scientology over her own children.

But at this VH1 link, you can see her dealing with what is still deeply felt trauma over being abandoned at only 13 years of age by a mom who had joined Scientology's "Sea Org."

We've put in interview requests with Mimi through her own website and through VH1.

As we reported yesterday, Mimi's mother, Gloria Olaiya Odufunke Simmons, died in 2003. She was a Sea Org member in Los Angeles when Mimi was a young teenager. Sea Org members -- Scientology's hardcore elite of workers -- toil up to 100 hours a week for almost no pay, and that demanding schedule means they have little time for anything else, including their own children. (In fact Sea Org members are encouraged not to have children, and numerous women have claimed in recent lawsuits that they were forced to have abortions when they got pregnant in the Sea Org.)

A friend who knew Mimi (who was then "Mimi James") says that the young girl was forced to live with friends because of her mother's total focus on the church. Here's how Mimi puts it in the scene above, with the father of her child, Stevie J., and her therapist, Dr. Jeff Gardere...

When my mother joined Scientology, they wanted me to sign a contract to work for them and I refused. I was kicked out at 13, and my mother was so consumed with her life in that religion, that we lost contact for many years.

...And where she ended up, she stayed there until she died. And she gave up her kids, everything, for what she wanted to do.

By "contract," we're assuming that Mimi was pressured to join the Sea Org and sign its billion-year contract, but refused. Judging from what was said in our comments yesterday, our readers are giving her a lot of credit for that.

She's currently an entrepreneur, and starring on the highest-rated cable TV show on Monday nights. We'll keep trying to reach more people who know about her experience with Scientology.

Even Google Is Piling on David Miscavige

David Miscavige just can't catch a break right now. An alert reader notified us that if we entered Miscavige's name in a Google search, the result was what you see below, which we grabbed before it changes.

Yes, that's a photo of Lisa McPherson, in extremis, and surely not something the leader of the Church of Scientology would want to represent him. We have a feeling Google would blame this on an imperfect algorithm, but we have to wonder if someone over there isn't having Miscavige on. (Also, Google is using a photo of Terri Schiavo for Lisa McPherson in the small thumbnail. What's up with that, Google?)

Posted without comment: the latest dope remix posted by Connor Cruise on Monday night:

Ben Stiller Channeling His Inner COB?

While we were talking to John Brousseau yesterday, he shared something with us that we're still trying to assimilate.

"You want to know what David Miscavige is like? I swear, Ben Stiller in Dodgeball is doing a perfect impression of him," Brousseau said.

Well, we're sure the resemblance is an accident, but we'll let you watch some of Stiller's performance, and those of you who have worked with Miscavige can tell us if the resemblance holds up...

Tory's 90's Hair

Yesterday, Tory "Magoo" Christman posted this precious look back to her days as a Scientologist to Facebook. If you've seen her very entertaining videos, you'll recognize her way of speaking, but oh, that Scientology lingo is something!

Well, that's a pretty weird mix of stuff for a Wednesday morning. Let us hear it in the comments (we know you will).

Tony Ortega has been the editor in chief of the Village Voice since March, 2007. He started writing about Scientology in 1995. You can reach him by e-mail at tortega@villagevoice.com, and if you ask nicely he'll put you on his mailing list for notifications of new stories. You can also catch his alerts at Twitter (@VoiceTonyO), at his Facebook author page, on Pinterest, a Tumblr, and even this new Google Plus doohickey.

New readers might want to check out our primer, "What is Scientology?" Another good overview is our series from last summer, "Top 25 People Crippling Scientology." At the top of every story, you'll see the "Scientology" category which, if you click on it, will bring up all of our most recent stories.

As for hot subjects we've covered here, you may have heard about Debbie Cook, the former church official who rebelled and was sued by Scientology. You might have also heard about the Super Power Building, Scientology's "Mecca," whose secrets were revealed here. We also reported how Scientology spied on its own most precious object, Tom Cruise. (We wrote Tom an open letter that he has yet to respond to.) Have you seen a Scientology ad on TV lately? We debunked some of the claims in that 2-minute commercial you might have seen while watching Glee or American Idol.

Other stories have looked at Scientology's policy of "disconnection" that is tearing families apart. You may also have heard something about the Sea Org experiences of the Paris sisters, Valeska and Melissa, and their friend Ramana Dienes-Browning. We've also featured Paulette Cooper, who wrote about Scientology back in the day, and Janet Reitman, Hugh Urban, and the team at the Tampa Bay Times, who write about it today. And there's plenty more coming.

Off Topic here.

I have been all over people rag mag today reading, posting and plugging Tony's blog here. Someone came in a made a post that caught my eye ( I thought, that is OSA ) so take my copy and paste with a grain of salt!

Team Tom : Thank goodness Tom is looking for a wife! Katie was a mistake, I am sure he and all his family members, friends and us fans wishes he never married the broad or had a child with her. Big mistake. I personally hope Tom remarries soon and have more children.

The beautiful gal he has been seen with is so much more attractive than plain Katie.

BTW, divorcee Holmes is not worthy of being linked to elite divorcee as mentioned above. I see that you go extra mile to compare Katie's (you must be the dad) divorce settlement to divorcees above her level. First of, most of these women mentioned have been married longer, have more children and most of all they are worthy wives. Katie is a cheat, a con, a schemer and uses people to get ahead. No, she is not worthy of anything. I am sure her next husband will be wiser than Tom. Tom's only fault was that he was in love.

Then a little later another poster came in ( I thought another OSA ) again, take this with a grain of salt.

Erica Gonzales: He is hot!!! I hope he finds a wife soon and have more children. Nicole was a good wife, beautiful, an elegant lady and did not get drain Tom even though she was married for a long time with TC. Katie Holmes is a dog. She demanded she was due millions (mind you KH tore the pre-nup in court!) for herself, huge child support and properties. She even calculated what Tom would get paid from his latest movie and boy, she is a cold blooded gold digger! I hope her Broadway show tanks, she get booed and loose all jobs plus she get ripped off from her business. Karma will bite her hard and we will rejoice when that happens.

So I posted about team Tom

(me:) OSA (Office of Special Affairs) came in earlier as TeamTom and said quotes:"The beautiful gal he has been seen with is so much more attractive than plain Katie." WHAT TOM IS DATING ALREADY? His divorce is not final yet, just the settlement.Yolanda has dated Tom before, it lasted about 4 weeks. She is a actress, not known very well, I might add. At the moment she has a boyfriend ( He too is a Scientologist. ) If she leaves him to marry Tom, what does that say about her?

Erica came back with a reply : What lies you feed. Who is OSA? The fine lady is not Yolanda.

They have been dragging Katie down anyway they can. Tom must have a new girl already and according to Erica, it is not Yolanda.

Thanks Tony for showing Lisa McPhersion extremis. She was a beautiful woman and still is a beautiful spirit IMHO. Most women and men who read her story can see the possibilities of that happening to them in scientology. That could've been me! One must read it to understand. And don't think for a minute it can't happen again. One way or another, it can.

I know that the members don't have access to the truth and just reading what was in the papers is not sufficient to know the truth. But the whole story and court records on the internet prove beyond a doubt who's behind this tragedy. There is no doubt when reading the facts. Her unprecedented death, after personally finding and seeing the truth for myself, I believe was the biggest downfall of the leaders and Hubbard.

It was their worst incident for the church and I heard it from a good source. Lisa's death also opened up the pages to view on the internet, of so many others that died because of scientology connection and for no other reason.

There are many more I'm sure the public doesn't know about. I personally know of one that happened many years ago, that's not listed, who committed suicide and had a direct connection to the church. And suicide was the answer to her problem then, and of course all hushed up. Another beautiful person wasted.

These things are kept hidden from the staff mostly. Since they value bodies so little, death is an answer they accept for problems easily and I'd even venture to say, promote it. Therefore they again lie again about helping people.

It was hard for me to believe that they were such liars, but in looking, I found the proof. Tony's articles in particular, are not bias, he offers the truth and you see it for yourself. One first has to be willing to think and look for oneself. Even Hubbard mentions that somewhere. That's how I started looking and it changed my life for the better. I have my own personal honor and integrity back. The truth shall set you free, someone said and I found it to be true.

Love you always Lisa.

@DodoTheLaser Finally, this is correct. For me, just *some* of the key highlights in this last month, Many very good, some very sad: 1) Katie divorces Tom Cruise 2) How Katie does it is fabulous and it's own statement, whether she meant it as such, or not, it is. 3) Their 11 days to settlement--again a statement 4) David Miscavige's Dad escapes OUT of $cientology. 5) Diana Hubbard's Daughter also gets OUT. (Diana is the LAST Hubbard family member to still be "in") 5) As a result of the above, there has been TONS of media on $cientology, exposing many different things about this insidious organization pretending to be a "religion".

6) One of the saddest is Karen DeLaCarrier's son, Alexander, found dead. Karen used to be married to the President of C of $ (who is now locked in "The Hole" out in Hemet, for years now); How $cientology treated all of this, esp not allowing the Mother, Karen, to even SEE her son or have his ashes, was beyond cruel. It truly demonstrated to the world how non-religious they really are. Karen rose above it and had her own lovely Memorial for Alexander which many friends and loved ones attended. $cientology let Heber out of the Hole to do a phony "Memorial" at Celebrity Center--of course right before Thursday at 2:00 --their week ending for "Stats". How gross is THAT. Karen, nor the media, were allowed in for this memorial, either.

7,8,9,10) Tragically, 4 young people have died at Scientology's "Drug Rehabilitation Center: Narconon".   As a result, a Narconon is shut down, and their key one in Oklahoma Arrownhead is under investigation thanks to David Love and Colin (ex-Narconon peeps) and many others who have helped on this. (My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of these children who tragically died in $cientology/Narconon's hands)

11, 12, 13) Three Parents contact me, telling me either their own child called them asking to get out, or they did their  own research on the Net re Narconon and decided to take their kid out. Kudos to both the young people AND their parents!

14) Again there has been HUGE press and media on all of the above, as their should be. Please keep spreading the word re this insidious organization. Even if you do nothing more than pass on the link to the Village Voice (here)...that alone is HUGE now. :) Thank you Tony, and the Village Voice for ALL that you do, daily. Love to you ALL :) Tory/Magoo

@Lemont Thank you for missing me; I'm flattered.

(for those following some comments yesterday, note the exceedingly correct use of a semicolon above)

My aircraft is indeed safe in the hangar in Morristown where it belongs. It's only a used G5, bought on the cheap from one of the managing partners who sold it in a hurry a few years back.  In late 2006, he ignored my advice and put on a major pair trade on mobile devices, shorting Apple at $90.  He figured it couldn't go up a lot more since it was up from $50 in only 3 months on rumors that Apple was going to introduce a phone. Apple promptly began the climb to $600 and he hung in there committing more capital to feed his short until he got squashed against the sky like a cockroach against the ceiling.

At the same time, he went long Microsoft at $34 betting that Vista was going to be a big hit with consumers.  MSFT hasn't seen $34 in quite a while, and if the risk-adjusted dividend yield weren't so compelling to dividend dweebs, the stock would be lucky to trade at half that level today. When his inevitable margin call came, I was able to swoop in and snag the hardware for a pretty good deal, basically just taking over the payments.  Though I don't tend to show it externally, I really enjoy these "I told you so" moments.

By the way, I'm fairly nonplussed about having to hangar my baby at Morristown instead of the much closer Teterboro, since Mo'town is close to the edge of all that crazy overlapping Class A airspace in NY Approach, so it's a lot easier to get out of town in a hurry when you're off to the Caribbean for a quick weekend getaway, especially when I manage to stay current on my type rating and fly left seat on the departure.

I should note, in the wake of the John Brousseau interview, that my hangar was not decorated via slave labor from the Harvard B-School summer interns, the Global Capitalism HQ equivalent of the Cadet Org in Scientology.

After knocking over far more Red Bulls than I really should the last few days, the nightmare is over.  Despite my "kinder, gentler" oversight, the math geeks augured in and we didn't go live today like Management wanted; we've pushed it off for two months until 10/1, which ought to give the replacement development team time to get up to speed and to understand that we really mean business.  Since I was the "fixer," I get a pat on the back for a valiant effort and get saddled with none of the blame.

After another night or two to catch up on my beauty rest, I hope to be back to posting on a more normal schedule (DecardCain, I'll start posting word counts again if that worries you at all)...

@itcouldhavebeenme If you have one of the first generation iPads, it only has 256 MB of RAM, which is barely enough to run the OS. If the page is big enough, and the JavaScript complex enough, you run out of RAM and the browser crashes.

Switching browsers doesn't make any difference on iOS, because Apple has decreed that only their Safari WebKit engine can be used in third-party browsers. Anyway, the real problem is not enough RAM so it's not something that can really be fixed in software, even if Apple did allow other browsers to include their own HTML rendering code.

Perhaps time to trade up to a newer tablet? The newer iPads and all Android tablets are going to have at least twice the RAM as a 1st gen iPad, or even 4x or 8x the RAM.

Thank you and hugs back.

Regarding Lisa, I never met her, but her story, and the pictures I saw of her bright eyes, beautiful smile and happy, have stuck with me. The awful tragedy which occurred was absolutely unnecessary.  One can Google her name and find out.

She should have been left at the hospital in the first place since something was wrong. But the scientology Control center of the church took control of her life and as a public person, no less. Under their supervision whilst using their dangerous methods, they let her die.

On top of that, Miscavage never apologized to her family or said they were even sorry and took no responsibility at all. In fact he told all members at an later event in a cheering mode, that they had basically won the case and didn't even mention her name!

Why were they absolved of a crime? Because a lot of people left the country or lied and important notes were missing. Plus some dirty tricks and/or money silenced the truth for the coroner to change her mind, IMO and others.

That hurts, yes, and many, many others feel the same and will not forget the injustice, or Lisa McPherson's life and premature death.

Guess I had more to say to some of those here that aren't aware and may be interested.  I know you have this knowledge.

@wwwRESEARCHcom  @MariannaP. And an airtight non-disclosure agreement (common in many high profile divorces) which if she violates, will likely void many of the clauses of her divorce agreement.  Katie will likely never speak about her relationship with Cruise or her experiences with scientology.  Any mother with a modicum of sense would do so.

wwwRESEARCHcom
wwwRESEARCHcom

@MariannaP. There is another poster that comes in and just insist on everyone of her posts that Katie is just as guilty because she doesn't tell what she knows. She talks about how Katie gushes and loves the audits etc, I can remember only 1 time that I heard Katie mention anything about  Scientology and she said that "she thought it made her feel like she was bettering herself."  ( After that, they may have told her to hush hush? ) So to a point I kind of agree with the poster, but at the same time, I feel Katie's FEAR. Anyone that has come out of the CoS has this same fear.

@MariannaP.  It is a regular war zone ( It is only a gossip mag, even ) another poster posted this.

poster:

For all those who believe “poor Katie” is hunted by the paparazzi and only wishes to be left alone, this aired recently on Inside Edition (national television in the US):

“Some people wonder why Cruise and ex-wife Katie Holmes are allowing their little girl to be seen in public during their high profile divorce.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman said on the Today show, "I've heard from people who know their entourage. They say they were seen in Central Park, people were notified ahead of time, it was very orchestrated. I don't think those photos happened accidentally."

Holmes is beginning to be called out for her constant exposure of Suri for publicity. While her fans and PR team call this backlash the work of the “CofS” and “Sci-Bots,”

(me) I assume you are telling me Katie should keep her and Suri IN and not go out and do anything? There is going to be paps THERE no matter WHAT Katie does. Maybe Katie has one set photographer? So she can tell who is around her. The rest of the cameras, she don't have any control over. I am glad you don't have to worry about "fair game" You have no clue what it is like being stalked, especially when you are being threatened and having scare tactics done to you. I could go on and on about how Scientology don't just let you walk out. Never mind. I am sure Katie is doing what she has to do!

"ENEMY SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."- L. Ron Hubbard, HubbardSorry

Katie, these rules DO apply to you. Watch yours and Suri's back always! Hire a photographer!!!

Thanks for the information. It's disgusting, but I hope that regular people won't buy it....luckily, the CoS executives are so disconnected from the real world that they can't attack with some recievable arguments (like "Katie just used Tom and she uses her divorce now"), that's why they post bizarre comments that would look bizarre to anyone (like "No, she is not worthy of anything."). I doubt that normal people can identify their own ideas with that.
