Naked Green People Fighting The Spectra Gas Pipeline Construction In The West Village [UPDATE: Video]

Protesters painted themselves a toxic green to protest the construction of a new pipeline for fracked natural gas in Manhattan.
Activists protesting the construction of a new natural gas pipeline into the heart of Manhattan stepped up their efforts to draw attention to the issue this weekend by getting naked, painting their bodies green, and dancing along the West Side Highway.

See More: Naked Green People Fight Pipeline Construction (NSFW)

The NJ-NY Expansion Project, known familiarly as the Spectra Pipeline after the Texas-based energy company behind it, runs about 16 miles from Staten Island, through New Jersey, and under the Hudson before surfacing in the West Village.

Spectra touts the pipeline as a necessary infrastructure project that will create jobs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by replacing oil with natural gas.

Opponents question the wisdom of running a high-pressure gas pipeline into the middle of the West Village, and note that the natural gas it will carry is derived from the controversial process of hydrofracking the Marcellus shale. You can read more about their concerns here.

The pipeline plan received federal approval in May (you can read Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's May approval here), and construction began this summer.

From the beginning, opponents of the project have pushed back, chaining themselves to construction equipment on the Gansevoort Pier where the pipeline enters Manhattan and staging a hazmat-suited dance party in the lobbies of Chase, Citibank and Wells Fargo, which are financing the project.

You can learn more about Spectra's arguments for the pipeline at the enthusiastically titled website YesGasPipeline.com.

That's some background on the issue. If you're into photographs of naked green people, we've got those too:

Some people should leave their clothes on. The green paint helps some.

This reminds me of the loonies that demonstarted during the Viet Nam War. There were stupid too. This certifiable nutjobs have been reading Al Gore's JUNK...and some people will buy anything. Grab them quick and you could sell them the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges.

Someone please hold out a welfare check & some food stamps in front of them and lead them away, so we can start making jobs for working people. These green people can go back to bed, and get some rest after proctesting all day, they're tired.

awesome, awesome awesome....ly creative!!!

BUT they shoulda been really naked. I mean c'mon, this is New York, people would be looking at the green more than the genitals.

Every day I speak about this pipeline to random New Yorkers on the subway, in a store, on the street. Never have I found even one person who wants this pipeline. I'm not surprised. Who would want radioactive gas piped directly to their small, poorly ventilated kitchens? Who would want to pay more than 4x the price they currently pay for natural gas? Who would want the threat of a powerful gas explosion in one of the most densely populated regions of our country? The answer: only industry, large investors in natural gas, and the politicians bought off by industry. A couple of years ago, when it was still possible to file as legal intervenors to the Spectra pipeline, just about all the filers who supported its existence came from industry. Just about all the actual human beings who filed were adamantly against this pipeline. What the green activists have just done so movingly is to show that peaceful, poetic demonstration is much more powerful than the bulldozers and international corporations poised to dig in to our beloved city.

@occupy_pipeline This was a wonderful event.  It demonstrated the power of people who draw courage from friendship and trust. By being naked they are vulnerable.  Yet they do it, showing the world that their flesh is stronger than steel.

In response to the previous post: Natural gas is not clean energy.  It is obtained by fracking, which entails shooting over 500 chemicals deep into the earth. The chemicals have already leached into water supplies throughout the country and contaminated the drinking water. Further, the process entails tons of water which then becomes waste water that must be stored somewhere.  Global warming is happening and our continued use of fossil fuels is speeding the demise of the earth's ability to support human and animal life.

@OccupyWallStNYC Naked Green People tactic clearly recommends itself in NYC anti-#fracking struggle.

http://ronwagnersrants.blogspot.com  Natural gas is the future of energy. It is replacing dirty, dangerous, expensive coal and nuclear plants. It is producing the electricity for electric cars. It will directly fuel cars, pickup trucks, vans, buses, long haul trucks, dump trucks, locomotives, aircraft, ships etc. It will keep us out of more useless wars, where we shed our blood and money. It lowers CO2 emissions.  Over 2,000 natural gas story links on my blog. An annotated bibliography. The big picture of natural gas.

.@OccupyWallStNYC isn't the whole point of protesting naked to display a break with society's values...? & isn't keeping underwear on, not?

Radioactive gas? Learn your facts before you comment such nonsense. Natural gas is organic just like anything else that is derived naturally from the earth.

@sandrakoponen Right she is. The future of energy? Certainly not shale gas from our neighbor Pennsylvania, laced with radioactivity. And certainly our future lies not in the tender hands of the big gas and oil companies who lie about how much gas can be extracted, and for how long, and where they intend to ship this gas. It's certainly not the future of energy for farmers whose livestock are getting sick and dying, whose crops and homes have been made unsalable, whose families are developing rashes and ills from their contaminated drinking water. Nor is it any kind of future for our children when we pour millions of gallons of our precious potable water into each well. And by the way, pipelines leak - they all leak, over time, and they often explode. The future truly lies in conservation, efficiency, renewables like solar (and solar thermal), offshore wind and tidal, the passiv house. Take a look at France, Italy - in fact California and New Jersey - and see how it's done. Don't believe that "we're not ready"! If not now, when? How many more violent climate events will it take before we decide we're ready?

@drunkwillmcavoy Well no it is not like phoning it in green skin represents the toxic effect of fracked gas and the radioactive radon

@ssesack1 Learn your facts, natural gas from fracking is different than normal natural gas and carries a high risk of radon, a radioactive gas. Also natural and organic does not mean safe, cyanide, for instance is found in the seeds of apples and many other places in nature, uranium is found naturally in the earth, would you like some of that sitting around your house?

And while youre at it.. why dont you shut off the heat to your tiny apartment this winter and not watch tv or use your computer. If you want to live in the stone ages then be a man (or woman) and go live in the woods and rough it for real. Until then do not complain about a "greener" energy source by which your life is made easier.

.@Occupy_Pipeline that last one is a serious question by the way. I really am confounded by the lack of thought this mvmt gives to its acts

drunkwillmcavoy

.@Occupy_Pipeline I mean, do you even give thought to WHY protesting naked is a tradition? Or are you just looking for attention...?

And since youre just the authority on natural gas... tell me how natural gas retrieved from fracking is any different than what you call "normal" natural gas. Assuming you leave out shallow biogenic gas, id love to hear your answer, but thats a loaded question and if you attempted to answer it you'd sound like a moron.

ssesack1

Also about your comment on uranium it must be enriched to be extremely harmful. going by your logic your granite counter tops are radioactive too maybe  you should remove them from your house?

ssesack1

I do know my facts allan mitchell. natural gas is processed and 0% radon is emitted in your home. cyanide is also found in pits of apricots too you wanna pick and prod? just because radon is natural and may be in shale rock doesnt mean its goig to your stove. Not to mention its half life is 3.8 days long... dont argue with someone who clearly has you outgunned.

P.S. dont argue with a geologist about rocks ;)

@Occupy_Pipeline part of my point is that the mvmt is taking all the punches in vain. Getting "real" means undermining them on a legal level

drunkwillmcavoy

@Occupy_Pipeline I can appreciate your dedication, but getting beat by the cops doesn't make a protest legitimate. They'll beat anyone.
