Unarmed Man Shot By NYPD Officer Identified As National Guardsman Noel Polanco

Noel Polanco is reportedly the man fatally shot by an NYPD officer this morning. Polanco, at the time, was unarmed.
A local media outlet has identified the unarmed man gunned down by an NYPD officer early this morning as 22-year-old National Guardsman Noel Polanco.

The Voice was unable to independently confirm the man's identity, but NBC New York says Polanco had returned home from an overseas tour "a while back" before he was fatally shot this morning by police.

The man reported to be Polanco was pulled over about 5:15 a.m. today after he was seen weaving in and out of traffic on the Grand Central Parkway, near Exit 7 and LaGuardia Airport.

Once stopped, the officer asked Polanco to show his hands. Polanco, however, reached under the seat, which is when the officer fired a single shot into his stomach. He died about 30 minutes later. No weapon was found in the vehicle -- just a power drill.

An off-duty NYPD officer was supposedly sleeping in the back seat of the car the entire time -- she claims she didn't witness the shooting.

As we noted in our prior post, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

If we were stopped by a cop and had a sleeping cop in the car with us, the first thing we're gonna do is wake her up to speak with the officer who's pulling us over -- hope that perhaps a little professional courtesy might lead to a warning rather than a ticket, or worse.

That, apparently, didn't happen.

The female officer hasn't been identified. Authorities say she's a four-year veteran of the force.

now it is being reporterd that the backseat passenger was waving her bacge ot the window prior to the shot.  so your point is moot, my defense is unneeded, but your still an idiot, alluding to cover ups before all the facts are in. why dont you wait 24 hours before getting all geraldo

ha, you're kidding, right? So, cops pull you over- this isnt a normal stop where the officer takes a moment to put his hat on and stroll sup to your vehicle by the way.  On THIS stop, they jump out of the vehicle with rifles raised and pointed (AFTER having been screaming at you and giving you the finger from an unmarked unit), they are screaming dont move and raise your hands, and in that 3 to 5 seconds you are 1) going to risk getting shot by reaching back and trying to wake your friend 2) actually have the presence of mind to do that in the first place and 3) if the yelling didnt wake her up, then do you think a call from the front seat would?.  Seriously Mr. King, My first priority would be to do what the copos say and not get shot in that 3 to 5 seconds.  I think YOUR premise is fairly unrealisitic.  So this is what the village voice has come to, bloggers looking to keep their blog filled by taking nonsensical, almost irrational, points of view, and raising irrelevant and pointless concerns.

@bobkuhl sounds like you can fit in most back seats on your knees, besides..... everybody knows Geraldo rocks.... this dummy shoulda did exactly as he was told, he'd be a lot more alive today.
