A former NYPD officer who pleaded guilty last month to charges that he stole several NYPD-issued firearms from fellow officers and sold them to a Queens drug kingpin was in court today, where he was sentenced to 15-and-a-half years in prison.

Additionally, former Officer Nicholas Mina -- who claims he sold the stolen guns to fuel his addiction to prescription pills -- was sentenced to five years of post-release supervision.

In his plea, Mina -- a three-year NYPD veteran -- admitted to stealing five guns in total, four NYPD-issued Glocks, one of which was his own, and a Smith and Wesson handgun. He copped to selling the guns to reputed drug kingpin Ivan Chavez, the leader of a Woodhaven drug distribution ring.

Each of the sales were monitored by undercover members of the NYPD's Firearms Investigation Unit. Mina was arrested in July.

"It shocks the conscience that the Firearms Investigation Unit under covers had to put their lives in danger in order to stop another officer from putting guns out on the street," Assistant District Attorney Chris Prevost said at Mina's arraignment earlier this year.

District Attorney Cy Vance was a bit more sympathetic.

"This case is a striking example of the destruction that surrounds prescription drug abuse," Vance says. "The defendant took an oath to protect New Yorkers from criminals. Instead, he worked alongside a gun trafficker in order to feed his drug addiction, and will now spend the next 15-and-a-half years of his life in prison."

In all, Mina was convicted of one count of criminal sale of a firearm in the second degree, one count of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, four counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree, two counts of criminal sale of a firearm in the third degree, and one count of conspiracy in the fourth degree.

Chavez already has been convicted of criminal sale of a firearm, criminal sale of a controlled substance, and conspiracy. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
