Texas AG Greg Abbott Wants You Gun-Owning, Freedom-Loving New Yorkers to Move to Texas

Categories: Gun Control

abbott2.jpg
Yesterday, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott bought space for two separate ads running in Manhattan and Albany urging New York gun owners to relocate to Texas. This came after New York lawmakers, led by Governor Andrew Cuomo, passed the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms (SAFE) Act. Signed on Tuesday, the NY SAFE Act represented the first significant gun control measures to be put in place since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut a little over a month ago.

One ad reads, "WANTED: LAW ABIDING NEW YORK GUN OWNERS LOOKING FOR LOWER TAXES AND GREATER OPPORTUNITY."

He's lying, of course. Texas doesn't want you. Odds are that if you're a gun-toting, red-blooded New Yorker, you might believe that gays and women are people, too, and that doesn't fly. Still, "Two Dick" Abbott* is slated to run for governor in Texas next year if the legendary Rick Perry decides against a fourth term. This ad campaign, if nothing else, shows the man's got some sand, some cheekiness, some cajones. And if that ain't vital in a gubernatorial race, we don't know what is.

When the Voice called Abbott's office, no one in his staff was available for comment, though Eric Bearse, Abbott's spokesman, spoke to the Daily Beast.

"The ad is inviting New Yorkers to come to Texas because we believe that the Constitution is sacred, and there to protect Americans from whimsical and knee jerk reactions by political leaders," he said. "And obviously citizens of New York are facing the prospect of further restrictions on the ownership of firearms."

One could argue that in his effort to play a well-endowed Monday morning quarterback, Abbott is brushing over the fact that 20 first graders were shot dead with perfectly legal firearms just a short drive from New York City, and that was a bad thing and shouldn't happen ever, ever again, and that it's prudent to take legal action to attempt to ensure that it doesn't. So we will. Still, the ads are inarguably great. And if you're still on the fence about moving, as Abbott was sure to point out, there's no income tax in Texas.

*"Two Dick" Abbott is not his real nickname. It's Greg.

Nobody needs 30 round magazines to murder children, but they sure are nice for home defense. But none if this really has anything to do with murdering children.

If you notice, the horrible tragedy was not in Texas.  They knew they couldn't get away with it here! Someone would be packin and stop them!

Headline: Millions of rapists, vandals, gangs, murderers are set to arrive in Texas shortly after receiving invite from Texas Attorney General, Abbott. When asked where they planned to live, all replied, anywhere we want cause we have our guns with us. LOL Poetic Justice in motion.

No one is supporting children riddled with bullets you idiot.  On the contrary, people are just simply exposing the idiocy of banning guns to rid our nation of gun murders.  Insane, evil murderers don't follow the rule book dumbass.  Get a clue.

I am a mental health professional in Texas.  Texas is ranked next to last in the nation by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) in terms of support for people with mental illness.  It's ranking in terms of rational gun control policy is equally as abysmal.  Gov Perry thinks it is okay to drive and text at the same time even though studies show again and again that this is as dangerous as drunk driving.  This is a serious issue and Greg Abbott is a fool.  If elementary school children riddled with bullets aren't sufficient for people to think seriously and soberly about gun control, well, I just hope that it is their right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness that is snuffed out the next time this happens and not mine.

Are all the village people this intelligent?  Mr. Howard is a perfect example of the stupidity and ignorance of the liberal media.  Don't even attempt any research or logical arguments.  What a joke.

Oh Greg... must you resort to name calling when you disagree with someone? Doesn't come across as very mature. And saying we Texans don't accept gay people is your opinion, not a fact. That is entirely untrue. Why do you keep talking about his penis? That's very innapropriate, gregory.

So if I kill someone with a baseball bat are we going to ban baseball bats? Your reaction is knee jerk and your arguement is invalid. You can't protect everyone from everything. If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. It's funny, one of the first things Hitler did when he came to power was to take everyone's guns away. That scares me.

I hear the water is very lousy in Texas. And this is coming from many Texans living in New York.

@thomas4769 Wait...banning guns to end gun murders? That's what people are trying to do? What idiots!

@reagan09

Also worth pointing out is that there are many examples if disarmament followed by genocide. Some were immediately after disarmament, others were decades after. The powers in charge at the time of disarmament were less relevant than the simple fact that being disarmed made it possible. Governments have been the single most prolific murderers in the last century by no small margin. If ending violence (our even "gun violence" fire those that insist on being myopic about it) is the true interest, it would be the government that would be disarmed. (perhaps that is why Congress was forbidden to fund a standing army for more than two years - something that has been ignored for a little over a century)

@reagan09 We should definitely ban private ownership of baseball bats if one day baseball bats are modified to kill a lot of people very quickly and with the flick of a finger. Yes, I think I'll stand by that. But of course, that would make it a gun wouldn't it?

And who is Hitler? Seriously, point him/her out. Is there a fascist in office now that's going to break down our front doors? Is he going to "take our freedom?" Enslave us? Start killing us by the millions? Send us to Canada? Don't remember voting for that guy. Can we vote him out in 2014? The real question is: are Cuomo or Obama in it for the long game?

And what makes an outlaw? Are we talking gangstas? Are we talking guys who come home to see their wives having sex with the mailman? Are we talking the drunk guy at the bar? Are we Adam Lanza? A murderer is someone who just murdered someone. An "outlaw" is someone who just operated outside of the law. You don't become one until it happens. In five minutes, I could be a murderer. You could be an outlaw, even though your name's Reagan (he wanted a gun ban, too.). "Arming good guys with guns" isn't the answer, because people and situations are fluid, and life isn't black and white. But of course you already know that.

@Vh Hurtado yes, I am from Texas and the water is lousy because the well cannot go deep enough due to the altitude being so close to sea level

@Vh Hurtado LOL, water quality? Really? On a related note, I hear the people are very lousy in New York. And this is coming from most everyone that has ever been there.

@greg.howard88 @reagan09

Just an FYI, but the AK47 dates back to 1947 (hence the number) and the AR15 was invented not too long after that. These guns aren't some recent modification. The spike in the use of weapons in general to murder school children coincides nicely with the gun free school zone act.
