To Lhota's Dismay, Quinn Picks Up Endorsement From Staten Island Borough Prez
James Molinaro is definitely not a Democrat. The Staten Island Borough President came to office riding the coattail of the Republican and Conservative Party ballots. He is the head of a borough that notoriously leans right in these quadrennial election seasons. But that doesn't mean a damn thing.
Yesterday, the Daily News reported that he's supporting City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's candidacy in the upcoming mayoral election.
In terms of personal politics, Mr. Molinaro and Ms. Quinn have fostered an interesting relationship. He attended her matrimony with Kim Catrallo but opposes same-sex marriage. The two differ on key policy issues yet still remain good friends. Tensions aside, Mr. Molinaro is just satisfied with his counterpart's work as Speaker: "I like what she's done for the Island." Plain and simple.
The support of Staten Island is necessary for any Republican's City Hall aspirations. And Mr. Lhota knows that.
The stakes were raised even higher when news came yesterday that Staten Island's Republican chairman is stepping down, opening the door for third party candidate Adolfo Carrion's contention of the GOP ballot. Hence why he told the News of his early electoral desperation: "I will sit with the borough president and do everything to convince him that I am the best candidate... We are friends and I am going to call upon him for his support."
So what we're trying to say here is that it hasn't been a particularly solid week for the former Rat Czar.
