Eliot Spitzer "Steamrolling" Scott Stringer in Comptroller's Race: New Poll
Prepare for a Spitzer-athon! The latest Comptroller's race shows Eliot "The Patron" Spitzer with a 19-point lead over Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. The current gap is 56 to 37, ahead of the looming Democratic primary.
The gap is just was wide among female voters as males, and Spitzer leads among African-American voters by a 68-21 margin.
"Everyone seems to be against former Gov. Eliot Spitzer except the voters, especially black voters," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Spitzer is all over the TV screens, building on his better name recognition and leaving Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the dust."
While Spitzer's sex scandal which forced him to resign as governor is seen as a legitimate issue in the race, only 23 percent of voters say it disqualifies him as a candidate. Another 32 percent say they don't really care about his patronizing high-end prostitutes.
The poll surveyed 579 likely Democratic voters.
