Opie of 'Opie & Anthony' Smashes Homeless Man's Cake, Doesn't Get Why People Aren't Laughing

Categories: Awful things

Andrew.jpg
It all started innocently enough on Saturday, when Gregg "Opie" Hughes of the Opie & Anthony Show on Sirius XM, was thinking back wistfully to the golden days of shock-jockdom.

He dusted off a classic from the archives: that time Homeless Andrew was proudly showing off a cake he'd just fished out of a dumpster--a cake which Opie promptly stomped on.

The video did go viral--but not in the way Opie was probably expecting: it was posted on Reddit under the heading "This guy's an asshole."

Thousands of negative comments followed.

"The way [Andrew] repeats 'That's not nice.' just kills me inside :'( "

"He was more of a decent human than they will ever be. There's no justice."

"I wouldn't even treat an animal like that."

When he woke the morning after posting the video Opie was shocked--shocked--to find the comments on the old video were not unanimously positive.

Something is fishy must be going on ...

Oh, that explains it: those sensitive, P.C. killjoys on Reddit have gone and gotten their panties in a twist about it.

What's the big deal?, he whines. This happened back in 2006--I only reposted it on Saturday.

Obviously, those uninformed losers don't know Opie & Anthony has a long history of degrading and humiliating homeless people.

Like their annual Homeless Shopping Spree, or that time Opie smashed a woman named Sandy Kane's guitar during Opie and Anthony's Homeless Talent Show.

Oh, they do know about that? And they still think he's an asshole?

Well, that makes it official.

At least there's some justice: Opie's version of the video--the one he kept posting the link to, and the one he would have been making money from each time it was viewed--has been pulled from YouTube for violating the site's policy "prohibiting content designed to harass, bully or threaten."

Anyone care to mention the GOOD opie did besides for Andrew and distributing money for the "homeless shopping spree" and putting "homeless" mustard on the air and leading him to a successful career in music.

I've liked the O&A show for a few years now. Patrice O'Neal is probably one of the great unsung comedians of our time. Norton is hilarious. Anthony can be really funny too (mainly when he has other comedians to play off of, IMO).

Opie, on the other hand, has always been an unfunny, mean-spirited piece of shit. As far as I can tell, he's mainly there because he keeps the show structured and is a package deal with Anthony. It's pretty much understood among most of their fanbase.

And entertainers dragging out the specter of the 'PC police' is getting REALLLLLLLLY old. Carlos Mencia did the same retarded shit every time someone pointed out his distinct lack of funniness. No, millionaire radio host, you're right to freedom of speech isn't being questioned right now, it's your uncomfortably douchey behavior.

So spare me the "you don't understand comedy" horseshit. You'll notice how in all the hemming and hawing about the PC cops, he never explained to the unfunny limp-wristed masses why stomping on a homeless guy's cake is funny to begin with, even if he was a friend of the show. Excuse me if I don't nut in my pants from the injustice of it all, I guess I'm just a raging faggot who's been too brainwashed by our dickless PC overlords to comprehend humor.

Just my two cents, the battle between annoying hipster dipshits vs. the losers of the mongoloid O&A army may now rage on.

Since this discussion continues for one reason or another (whether it's some hacky writer, a disgusting excuse for a human being taking advantage of this situation and trying to leech money off of people with a "fundraiser", O&A and Jimmy, or the fans responding) I would like to point everyone in the direction of a video Opie posted on his youtube, as well as his twitter. It is taken about a week after the "incident", and is audio of O&A talking to Andrew. Please check it out, especially if you are one of those who saw the video on reddit and decided to be offended. I mean, if something upsets you that much, you should keep informed, right?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAu2Q1I9lOM

I love how they've left out the myriad of times Opie has said he's not proud of what he did. Regardless of the fact that the guy pulled a stale cake out of the garbage bin, and they paid him afterwords to maybe get something to eat that didn't come from the trash.

Did they fail to mention that Opie paid the guy a fat wad of cash afterwards?  How much money and clothes and the like the homeless got from the shopping spree?  That Sandy Kane failed to mention that Opie paid her to buy a new guitar and the smashed one was a wreck to begin with?

@ Onehundredjobs1        this game that  irrational PC robots like you play every week, the game of waiting for your next chance to be outragged by something and offended by whatever joke or comedy bit that can provide you with a "bad guy" to protest and a new CAUSE of the week for you to champion, at least until next week.   So go on and act like you are working on helping the homeless by buying Cake for them, that is soo clever, we all get it.  Let us all pretend to not see the pathetically obvious Irony in the fact that you are raising money to buy cake for the homeless based on a comedy bit that wasn't even about humiliating a homeless guy, the homeless man was a friend of the show and he was on the show all the time and he knew that O&A and Jim Norton and the various comedians that frequent the show constantly insult, embarrass and make fun of each other .  People like you Onehundredjobs1 are the real hypocrites because you would have O&A treat  Andrew, the guy all of you pseudo activists call "the homeless man", differently because he is homeless and therefore he can't handle being messed with a little, even though he was well aware of what type of show it is and what to expect when he was on, like the money he was paid for his part in the comedy bit.  Do you really think he would have preferred that cake, that was fished from the garbage, over being paid cash so that he could go buy another cake or 3 or 4 cakes.  Opie ruined a dirty cake, that was found in the garbage, in order to get a shock-value laugh from the audience due to the fact that everyone familiar with the O&A show, including Andrew(the homeless man).  and everyone else involved knew that it was simply a joke meant to be outrageously mean to shock the audience with an act that no rationale caring person would think to do, That is why it is funny because it was completely un-called for and shocking It was

It was not done to bully, make fun of, or hurt some random homeless man that the evil radio guy just ran into.  Andrew knew that he was going to get paid after being on O&A but   People like you 'Onehundredjos1'  are unable to grasp that concept,  Because you can't accept the fact that O&A treated Andrew no differently than ANY OTHER guest, comedian or caller.   O&A  provide entertainment and they pay the people that agree to come on the show and risk being made fun of or having pranks pulled on them.  Just because Andrew is homeless, PC 'weekend Activists' like you ONEHUNDREDJOBS1 automatically assume Andrew should be handled differently, he should be pitied like he was not able to understand or unaware of the fact that he was getting paid for coming on O&A.  Andrew had a sense of humor and was capable of making fun of himself in his previous appearances on O&A and he knew from the beginning that if he really wanted some cake he would now have some money to buy some....courtesy of the EVIL OPIE & ANTHONY

@Onehundredjobs1  The irony of your self-aggrandizing disgustingly naive attempt at trying to feign interest in helping the homeless by raising money on Indiegogo would be hilarious if you actually were being sarcastic,  but you are serious.  Instead of actually trying to raise funds and provide something that homeless people could use like maybe money, winter clothes, medical care, groceries, or a hot meal, you exploit the situation of a percieved injustice of a homeless man being picked on by a 'Shock Jock.  People like you who have no understanding of the style of humor shows like O&A or stand-up comedians like Jim Norton, Patrice O'Neil, or Collin Quinn provide.  If any of you consistantly outraged PC internet police had any understanding of the this facet of their comedy genius that involves the uncomfortably accurate insulting and attacking of each other with no mercy, people are called out and everyone knows that it is all in fun and for the entertainment of the millions of people enjoy that kind of humor.  Their refusal to be politically correct  or apologize for offending all the thin-skinned so-called Americans that are all about Freedom of speech so long as it is not speech that they deem offensive..

I read all these tired replies to my comments so I'll just respond in one big swoop:

You Say: It was for the show. Do your research. You don't even watch the show so you don't know. You're boring. You have no sense of humor.

I Say: Stepping on a homeless man's cake and laughing about it like you're three years old isn't going to make me. If your idea of boring is someone not laughing at a homeless man having his cake smashed then I'll be boring for the rest of my life. I love comedy. I love jokes. I love comedians. But a comedian (or funny person in general) worth his/her weight can make a joke without ridiculing the intended target.

You Say: Opie & Anthony have done more for homeless people than you ever will.

I Say: That argument is weak. You know no one on the comment board nor do you know how much their charitable contributions go to homeless people. You also don't know what people do on a daily basis. But yes, I've made home-cooked food for homeless people. I've donated food, supplies and given them money. I've written articles defending the rights of those who are homeless and actually sat down to talk to these people. And I donate clothes on a regular basis. And I didn't have to ridicule them, destroy their property, make fun of them, treat them like circus monkeys or laugh and point a camera to do it. When you care about a cause, you don't need a YouTube video to prove it.

You Say: The blogger did no research on the mall shopping video.

I Say: If you really care about clothing homeless people, you'd just give them the money to go shopping. You don't need to videotape them ONCE AGAIN to be entertained by those who are shocked they're in the mall. Again, treating them like circus monkeys.

You Say: He gave him $100 or $500

I Say: Unless you saw the money exchange, I'm not buying it. If it was so important to the script, that should've been filmed, too. Instead the only part of the video circulating is him stomping the cake and the moronic laughing behind him. If he gave him the money, so be it. But there was no logical reason to step on his cake before he gave him the money. It served no purpose.

You Say: It was for the show.

I Say: Now I understand why Sirius XM has no sponsors. I'm glad Village Voice brought this ridiculous show to our attention, as well as ReddIt. I'm also happy that the video was taken down and will continue to report any additional copies of it that show online.

You Say: He doesn't care what you think of the video. He's a shockjock.

I Say: If he didn't care that much, he wouldn't be on Twitter talking about it or playing the victim and hoping his equally sociopathic fans would come to his rescue. What you all don't seem to realize is it doesn't make you look BETTER for defending him. It just makes you look WORSE for defending this bull.

Now that I've wasted my time responding to people who think it's okay to make fun of homeless people as long as there is money involved, I hope you dedicate that kind of time to donating, too. Instead of being on the web defending this pitiful video, use that energy and donate ON YOUR OWN. Here's hoping you don't feel the need to destroy property to show you "care," too. Good luck in life. Karma will catch up with you sooner or later. Hopefully sooner. And that I will certainly laugh about.

Ironically, Opie and the show has probably done way more for the homeless in New York City than any of the people wanking over their supposed moral superiority on this site.
They've had many of them on the show and helped them out and organised stuff like the homeless shopping spree, which I'm sure you all hate to, cause they're having fun at the same time.

Welcome to the world of today. Get angry at comedians and you'll never have to do a thing.

So since nobody has done it yet, I think it might be nice to direct people to a place where they could help the homeless in NYC, where the show is from, and anywhere else.

@larsonvargas I'm not sure which one you are, but you do seem to be a listener of the show, or at least someone who has some in depth knowledge/thoughts of the show. Whether you're an annoying hipster dipshit, loser mongoloid, or PC faggot is inconsequential. But, if you did pay a little more attention to the show, you would know Opie enjoys when things get uncomfortable, and laughs when he himself is uncomfortable. So, for him, that was a moment to fuck with his friend(s), maybe make things a little uncomfortable, and get a good chuckle.

To your point about him not explaining 'why' it was funny to stomp on his friends stale garbage cake, well, maybe that is because nothing is funny when you have to explain why it's funny. Also, and this was said before if you just look down a bit in the comments, he said it was not one of his prouder moments.

@imsancho42I think a lot of fans are hell-bent on assuming everything I do is wrong and/or self-promotional. I came up with the idea because I thought I should turn all the negative attention I was getting (and to a certain extent that the O & A show is getting) into something positive and social media friendly. It's in my nature to be creative and use social media in ways that are artistic and socially-positive. i challenge you to call up the show Monday and discuss this further.  I'd buy a cake, but I'm not so sure your cake looks edible and I doubt you'd put my message on a cake.  If you really want to help, work on the crumbling mental health support for the majority of these people, or perhaps clothes for the upcoming winter versus one quick sugar high.  I bet the dumpster cake would have tasted better than that cake you show on the indiegogo page.  but hey, let's get back to the cause here, getting your vlog more exposure!

@onehundredjobs1 I am sure that will be the best most beneficial way to help homeless people, You know when you are out on the street with no shelter and you have an infected cut on your leg A PIECE OF CAKE SOUNDS FABULOUS! Much rather have some cake over extra socks, Clothes, shoes, or a hot meal.

Maybe if you stopped being so self-righteous and using this non-story to pretend you all of a sudden care and are deeply involved in helping the homeless people would not be as disgusted by how moronic the idea of donating money to someone for helping the homeless that uses it for cake.

If you had cared a little more about actually helping people in need rather than jumping on to a hot topic with the whole Cake idea.  It might get you noticed faster but it just makes your campaign look like a cheap plea for attention

So the little fact I pointed out about the man being told before hand and being okay with it doesn't mean anything to you?

The bit wasn't "scripted" like atv show or a movie it was basically "Hey do you mind if we do this for the radio show" and the homeless man saying "no" lol.

Also why would you show the man being given the money? It would take away from the illusion of it being a legitimate act of an asshole "shockjock" which was the character Opie was playing at the time, does a magician reveal the secrets behind their tricks as soon as they perform them? The answer is no.

@marbuls024  Not entirely correct.  The audio of prank calls can't be played over public airwaves if the unknowing person doesn't give consent.  90% of those lame Z100-style calls are to someone's wife or husband, so obtaining consent after the fact isn't usually a problem.  Howard Stern's pranksters have talked about calls they're not allowed to air because after-the-fact consent could not be obtained.

State law varies on taping someone without their knowledge.  In New York, it is legal to tape a call as long as one or more parties are aware that it is being taped; this includes the caller.

If you didn't read her comment, then why did you bother to reply?

herp derp

To be real, I think you did read her comment and it got under your skin because from the bottom of your heart you know her words are true. It's fucked up to laugh at someone being bullied especially someone that's homeless. Most of them have nothing, how in the hell can you laugh at someone, when they're hurting. "That's not nice" those words broke my heart, even staged how can you laugh at that man?

Yes, I understand the fact that this was staged and he was payed to do this. It still doesn't make it funny.

I guess that makes my sense of humor garbage too eh?

To each his own, I suppose.

shamontielvaughn
shamontielvaughn

@marbuls024 The next time you reply to me, proofread what you said. Learn the difference between "than" and "then." And after you do that, don't ever in your life tell me WHEN I can reply to ANYTHING. "If you've as much for the homeless" is missing a word. You were so ready to reply to my comment that you didn't even bother to make sure it made sense, and of course you did it under a blank icon. I have done PLENTY to help those who are homeless (clothing donations, making homecooked products, monetary wise, etc.) But even if I did not, I still have the right to speak about someone destroying someone's property. The idiotic belief that it's somehow entertaining to destroy someone else's property but then donate to them is like saying it's okay to punch someone in the face as long as you pay for the doctor's bill. This is THE most repulsive and tacky way to give back to society, and it says more about YOU that you would somehow justify this stupidity. Be more informed on my opinion? I read all these wack ass comments defending that it was for a show and he gave them $100. Whoop de doo. I'm not budging. It wasn't worth it. They should've had their radio show shut down.

Sorry for putting the fact out there that this author lives on drama, usually making it out of trivial things.  That's a fact, as her writing leaves plenty to be desired, much less her starting points, the topics.  It's not to change any subject, it's called context and background on the writer of THIS pathetic article.  One could have done one google search and had more depth, made a few calls and got some info from those involved...shame what constitutes a story these days.

It's actually very funny if You get it At all, it's SSSOOOOOOOO extreme and Sssoooooooo Over the top and OBVIOUSLY something that would/should never be done as a legitimate action. THAT is a lot about what good comedy is, it's misdirection like a great magic trick or illusion in comedy the GOOD/GREAT comics smack you across the face with the usage of the extreme.

The fact that you're willing to make one broad singular sweeping determination on the show hosts and show supporters based off of one out of context 6 yr old video says alot about you don't you think? marbuls024
marbuls024

See in the end what matters is the awareness this video brought to this man and his plight, if it wasn't for this video he would have been just another homeless person like the many out on the city streets. The same people on this site complaining about what Opie did would walk by without a second thought crossing their minds but suddenly those same people are on some self righteous high horse.

marbuls024

You're right i have no right to tell you when to voice your opinion and I apologize, that being said back to the topic at hand. It was a radio bit, the guy was a friend of the show and was all for it BECAUSE he KNEW it would make good radio/video. He also knew he was going to be well compensated following the cake smashing by both the show and the listener's as well as the people who would go give him money DIRECTLY AS A RESULT OF THE VIDEO.
