One of this year's mostly under-covered races also looks to be one of the closest: Public Advocate candidates Daniel Squadron and Letitia James are headed for a runoff. With 79 percent of precincts reporting, the two look to be virtually tied, with James at 35% and Squadron at 33.3, according to election results from the Associated Press.

Both campaigns had long been expecting this result; in August, Squadron's campaign wrote to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, calling it "reasonable to anticipate" a runoff and seeking permission to raise additional funds.

The CFB granted that request, as the Daily News reported at the time, meaning both campaigns were allowed to accept donations of up to $2,475, which they were required to deposit in a special, runoff-only account. Looks like it's time to break out the piggy bank.
