Man Shames Banksy Spectators To Start Looking for Avonte Oquendo, Too [VIDEO]

It's been two weeks since the start of Banksy's residency, and New York City has had the privilege of playing along with one of the most famous artists of our time. We run from borough to borough for the chance to ogle his latest creation before someone defaces it or starts collecting cash from onlookers.

But let's hang on a minute: There are other things that need finding, too. Like human beings. 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo went missing October 4 when he walked out of The Center Boulevard School in Long Island City. One man, who was among the crowd at Banksy's Gladiator piece in Woodside, took the chance to remind the audience that maybe they should syphon just a little bit of their enthusiasm for Banksy into finding Avonte (ed. Or any other missing child for that matter. There are over 800,000 missing children in the U.S. at last count.) Runnin' Scared has video of the scene, after the jump.

The hunt has been on for young Avonte, who is autistic and nonverbal, already shutting down all subway work, brought out hundreds of patrol officers, and dispatched helicopters across the city.

An unnamed man, who a source says hung around before and after giving his speech, got up in front of Banksy's "Gladiator" in Woodside and delivered this simple statement.

"I hope that there is as much effort to spot the next Banksy piece as there is to find Avonte."

He then passed out flyers with Avonte's identifying information and how to contact the relevant authorities with tips or clues.

We encourage Runnin' Scared readers to contact the authorities if you have any leads on the Avonte Oquendo disappearance case. There's a $60,000 reward for information leading to Avonte's return.

Watch the video of the scene at "Gladiator" below.

I obviously feel sorry for the family of this missing person and wish he is returned to them safe and soon, but c'mon a lot of the people looking for these Banksy's are tourists.  I know that I wouldn't want to go away on holiday and then spend my time looking for missing people. As cruel as that may sound it is a reality.  How many people do go on holiday to do this kind of thing? There are obviously children and adults missing from all over the world.  People go on holiday to enjoy themselves and do the things that made them pick that city/country in the first place.

I don't doubt that the people there at the scene will keep an eye out after receiving a flyer, but I don't think they will give up their time to begin a missing person hunt around NYC. It's simply not what they're there for.

Unbelievable! The voice found a way tie in Banksy with Avote Oqueno story? Did someone over at the VV buy a van full of Banksy’s work?

why is this even worthy of an article?

I'm fully aware of what he's trying to do. I'm being facetious. My point is I don't want someone pushing some 'cause' on me if I'm wandering around looking at art, going to a gig or doing my shopping, however clever you or anyone else thinks he's being. If I'm going to spend time looking for lost children, I think I can manage it off my own bat.

why doesn't he stop ranting at strangers & go look for him instead?

The only connection is the "art" of manipulation. Using the media to possibly save a life instead of staring at paint on a wall. I personally think what he did was artistic and creative. Your ignorance leaves me dumbfounded. Love ya Cormac, but not your response to this.

His argument is that people have to actually search for Banksy's art. It's a little unreasonable, but it makes you think.

Unnamed man should get his contexts straight. Since when does taking time to look at art have anything to do with missing children. Is he going to stand in the countryside and preach at people who want to breath fresh air and admire the landscape?

Art for art's sake is an empty phrase. Art for the sake of truth, art for the sake of the good and the beautiful, that is the faith I am searching for

@leeroyburrel You, sir, are missing the point. He's not asking them to go out and search. It's called awareness, dumbass.

@Jen Convery

 the fact that you have to ask that question is sad. you must not have a child and prob, full of yourself!

@Cormac Figgis Then you also realize that Banksy's work is heavily based on a political, socio-economic and humanistic platform. I believe this is the absolute perfect outlet for a fellow human to speak vocally and actively on a missing boy. If what we do for art --as both spectator and artist alike-- is for mere tourism, money and viewing purpose, than by that agenda we have missed the point enitrely as to what art does -- it unites us and makes us think.  Being bold enough to express one's concern for the welfare of a child brings the very essence of why we draw, write, paint, sculpt, build, make music, scream, cry and share emotions...to EXPRESS. Banksy would back me up on this...I assure you.

A child is missing and yes thousands of children go missing every day from every corner of this world but this boy who in age is a teenager but mentally may not be as mature as his age discribed and the fact that he is mute and autistic is hard enough for family to swallow...what that had to do with art is the fact that there could never be too many people in a search party and this man found this as a chance to get others more involved...I hope that you never have to report your child or a child of a friend or family member missing ...where did life go wrong with you that you have that twisted point of view that vandelism is more important than helping a family find their loved one...have a damn heart

@beautrifulmama I really don't sound stupid at all. I would like people to be aware of my missing child and to keep an eye out, but that's all I can ask.  Tell me, how many times have you been on holiday and spent it looking for missing children? Because believe it or not there are missing children all over the world. So from your logic, next time you're away sitting on a beach think about how selfish you're being by not looking for missing people.

leeroyburrel

@Takeshi_Kovacs @leeroyburrel I'm far from dumb, so stupid name calling won't get you anywhere.

You say he's not not asking them to go out and search, however, the headline of this article is "Man Shames Banksy Spectators To Start Looking for Avonte Oquendo, Too" not Man Shames Banksy Spectators into raising awareness for missing people.

If you actually read the article it goes on to say "One man, who was among the crowd at Banksy's Gladiator piece in Woodside, took the chance to remind the audience that maybe they should syphon just a little bit of their enthusiasm for Banksy into finding Avonte"

I therefore stand by my point and do not believe I have missed out on anything.

@pricelessangel16 vandelism?

and the whole "what if it happened to your child" argument is complete nonsense. go preach your distorted views of reality to a goat or whatever.

p.s. - instead of commenting here you could be searching for him yourself. boom! what now?!?
