Almost four years ago, the Gowanus Canal was added to the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund National Priorities List in order to further investigate contamination at the site and develop an approach to address the contamination. But what has progressed since then? And what does "Superfund" even mean? This evening at Superfund: A Citizen's Guide, Inna Guzenfeld, planner and urban historian trained at Pratt Institute, discusses this very question, along with spotlighting the Superfund in your neighborhood. She will also focus on citizen participation in the Superfund process and conclude with a discussion of current and future sites in the five boroughs.
At 6:30 p.m., Brooklyn Brainery, Brooklyn, $10.
[Lit] Before the age of OkCupid and sexting, folks had to use a real-life personality in order to bed and wed (or not) whomever they desired. Perhaps average people had wit and charm, but how do historical figures fair in the love department? Would you want to date Ernest Hemingway or Frederick Douglass? Tonight Historical Heartthrobs author Kelly Murphy discusses this topic, along with Vice's Brian Moylan, comedians Sue Smith and Andy Ross, and Adult Swim writer Joe Garden.
At 7 p.m., PowerHouse Arena, free.
[Lit] Last month, Springsteen's new collection, High Hopes, leaked on Amazon, so you may have already heard some of the dozen songs on the 18th studio album by Jersey's crooning native son. But today it drops for real, so mark the occasion with a trip to his home state. Word Jersey City, an offshoot of the Greenpoint bookstore, hosts Springsteen Night with authors Marc Dolan (Bruce Springsteen and the Promise of Rock and Roll) and Caryn Rose (Raise Your Hand: Adventures of an American Springsteen Fan in Europe). Join them for a conversation about the icon, who has said that he's "spent most of my life as a musician measuring the distance between the American dream and American reality." -- HB
At 7:30 p.m., Word Bookstore, Jersey City, free.
[Burlesque] Every Tuesday night, the gorgeous women of Victrola Burlesque wow the crowd at Hill & Dale, and tonight should not disappoint. Catch rousing dance numbers by Perle Noire, Darlina Just Darlina, Genie Adagio, and Zoe Ziegfeld.

[Party] "At first I was afraid, I was petrified ..." If you know what comes next, you best find your way to Queeraoke. Don't deny your desire to sing in front of strangers any longer. Queeraoke, "karaoke for gays and queers and allies," begins with a couple of stand-up comedy sets (you know, to give you enough time to get drunk) and then becomes an all-night sing-along fest. The most spirited performer of the evening wins a $25 bar tab.
At 10 p.m., Metropolitan, Brooklyn, free.
