TERF Battle: A New Book Reignites the War Between Radical Lesbian Feminists and Trans Women

On March 21, Vikki (she requested we use only her first name) proudly tweeted a pair of photos of herself for #BeforeAfterFriday. On the left, dated 2009, was a ruddy-cheeked, button-nosed dude sporting a newsboy cap, black T-shirt, and five o'clock shadow. On the right was present-day Vikki, resplendent in orchid eye shadow, blush, and lip gloss, her celadon eyes peering up from under an asymmetrical bob.

Compliments came pouring in. "I can only hope to achieve something similar," one follower tweeted back.

The tone changed a few weeks later, when the same photos were posted to the Facebook page of the website Gender Identity Watch, run by radical lesbian feminists vehemently opposed to very concept of "transgender." Almost immediately, Vikki's Twitter timeline turned into a stream of haters attacking her appearance and repeatedly referring to her as a man.

Upon seeing the photos on Facebook, Vikki's girlfriend frantically dialed and redialed her number, but Vikki wasn't answering. "She actually thought that I'd tried to kill myself," Vikki says.

Her girlfriend had reason to assume the worst: The suicide rate among transgender people hovers around 41 percent, according to a 2010 study. That's nearly nine times the national average. The study specifically cites harassment as a major contributing factor.

The next few weeks were rough, to say the least. Vikki found herself unable to perform even the simplest tasks, like applying her makeup before going to work. "I found myself crying at my reflection," she tells the Voice. "Every time I looked in the mirror, it amplified my dysphoria." ("Gender dysphoria" is the clinical term for the conflict between a person's birth gender and the gender with which he or she identifies.)

Harassment of the sort Vikki endured isn't new or uncommon. For decades, certain radical feminists have viewed trans women as men demanding the spoils of womanhood without enduring the female experience, or worse, as fifth columnists intent on subverting the women's movement. Even Gloria Steinem wrote in the 1980s that feminists were "right to feel uncomfortable about the need for and uses of transsexualism."

terf-battle-pull-quote-queer-issue.jpg
The Internet and social media have only relocated this long-running war online, even as mainstream feminists have banished TERFs — "Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists," as trans allies call the opposition, a label the feminists consider a slur — to the outer fringes of the movement. Steinem herself disavowed her older views in an essay published in the Advocate in 2013. "Transgender people," she wrote, "including those who have transitioned, are living out real, authentic lives. Those lives should be celebrated, not questioned."

But if trans activists believed their radical-feminist enemies were being steadily beaten back to the darker corners of the Internet, they were dismayed when they heard of a new book by British scholar Sheila Jeffreys, a respected professor from the University of Melbourne, that would dismiss transgenderism as a fad embraced by the seriously mentally ill. Worse still, one of the most prestigious academic publishers in the world, Routledge, had agreed to distribute Jeffreys's book, Gender Hurts: A Feminist Analysis of the Politics of Transgenderism.

The prospect had a particularly disturbing resonance for trans people who could recall an earlier academic work that had far-reaching consequences in the real world.

In 1980, feminist Janice Raymond, now professor emerita at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, wrote The Transsexual Empire: The Making of the She Male, whose title neatly summed up her central arguments: The medical and psychiatric professions had fallen prey to pressure from transgender activists and to trendy theories about gender identity. Far from giving people the chance to begin life anew, Raymond warned, hormonal therapy and anatomical adjustment were profoundly misogynistic acts that did irreparable damage to deluded patients and to feminism itself.

The book established Raymond as an authority on transgenderism. She was one of several scientists from whom the (now-defunct) National Center for Health Care Technology requested papers that would ultimately guide the federal government's 1981 decision to deny Medicare coverage for gender-reassignment surgery, a practice that was quickly embraced by private insurers.

When word of Jeffreys's book leaked a year ago, trans activists wrote to Routledge asking the publisher to drop Gender Hurts, which in turn fed radical feminists' fears that transgender women were behaving like thought police.

Gender Identity Watch founder Cathy Brennan tells the Voice she found efforts to pressure Routledge not to publish Jeffreys's work "very frightening," adding that she's deeply troubled by "the idea that [Jeffreys], as an academic publishing a book, should have someone looking over her shoulder to make sure she's using approved language."

Routledge didn't back down. When the publishing house released Gender Hurts three months ago, it shot to the top of Amazon's Transgender Nonfiction list, in spite of its $50 price tag.

In her book, Jeffreys expands on her theory that transgenderism is a recent and highly toxic social phenomenon. In an interview with the Voice, she invoked cautionary tales of adults ruing irreversible childhood surgeries, husbands announcing over dinner that they were switching genders, and women living in fear of being raped every time they share a bathroom with a transgender woman. To Jeffreys, however, this "fad" is most harmful to transgender people themselves, who, she contends, are taking out their "very serious mental problems" on their own bodies.

Jeffreys says she harbors no personal animosity toward transgender people. As a feminist, she says, she simply consigns transgenderism to a list of "harmful" social practices that also includes prostitution, makeup, high-heeled shoes, and tattoos. "To criticize the practice is seen as hating on the people who do it," she says, doubtless aware that transgender people no more consider their gender identity a "practice" than gay men or lesbians view their sexual identity as a "choice."

Cristan Williams, editor of the website TransAdvocate, says Jeffreys's work is particularly pernicious for the way it plays right into the hands of the political far right. Because Jeffreys is a lesbian who considers herself a left-wing radical feminist, Williams says, "It gives the right wing this notion, this appearance of an unbiased source" when people like Sean Hannity, who name-checked Gender Hurts on his daily radio show, cite her work approvingly.

They failed to keep Gender Hurts off bookstore shelves, but trans activists and their allies haven't relented in their fight against radical feminists. In November, the feminist group Secular Woman initiated a change.org petition calling on the Southern Poverty Law Center to monitor Gender Identity Watch as a hate group. The petition recounted stories about transgender men and women who were outed to their physicians, employers, family members, and school administrators, or doxxed: had their pre-transition photos and names posted online, sometimes alongside those of violent sex offenders.

Secular Women president Kim Rippere tells the Voice that the SPLC declined to act because it believed Gender Identity Watch "doesn't rise to the level of 'group' that they use." (A spokeswoman for the law center says the organization is "looking at the group.")

The petition put the SPLC in the position of arbitrating between two factions, each adamant they're being persecuted by the other. Further complicating matters, the law center has dealt with Gender Identity Watch's founder before as an expert: A 2012 article about the "hard-line fringe" of the Men's Rights Movement published in the SPLC's Intelligence Report magazine quoted Cathy Brennan as a prominent source.

An attorney who once campaigned for a Maryland nondiscrimination law that would have included legal protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, Brennan says the campaign against her is "based on this idea that if you don't toe a specific line" — i.e., accept trans women on their own terms — "you're a Hitler/Nazi/hater/bigot."

Though the SPLC has so far declined to take sides, Facebook did. On June 17, Vikki tweeted to her followers that the social network had suspended Gender Identity Watch's page. (Within hours, a new page, Gender Identity Watch Reloaded, popped up.)

A minor triumph, but also the latest in a string of victories transgender Americans have chalked up. For example, earlier this month, the New York State Department of Health announced it would no longer require transgender residents to provide documentation of surgery or hormonal treatment in order to change their legal gender.

In May, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services made a momentous and potentially far-reaching decision: It overturned its ban on extending Medicare coverage to gender-reassignment surgery on the grounds that the government's previous determination that the surgery was "experimental" and "controversial" is no longer "reasonable in light of the current state of scientific and clinical evidence."

she was born a girl with the wrong body and the things that she and others like her have to go through should NOT include oppression by other women!!!

Wow!  People are so oppressive.  Shame on them!  We know which general direction the oppression is coming from.  Why should females of any age have to share a restroom or locker room with a pre-op transwoman (meaning he still has his penis).  He can "identify as a woman" all he wants until the cows come home and hell freezes over, but if he still has his penis, girls and women don't want to see it, and they shouldn't have to.  No, seventeen year old girls don't want to see Colleen Francis and his male genitalia.

Scroll on down to the post about the violent adolescent male known as "Jane Doe".  I care more about the safety of the girls and female staff than his "gender identity". Thankfully, he didn't seriously injure a girl or female staff member before "Jane Doe" was finally sent to a facility for boys.  No one speaks for the girls.

http://www.ctnewsjunkie.com/upload/2014/05/janedoe-redacted.pdf

Since we are on the subject of oppression, the only time violence against a woman is a hate crime is when the woman is a male.  I've always supported the inclusion of transgendered identified persons in hate crimes legislation, but it only goes one way.  For example, in Washington State, Douglas, "Donna", Perry is on trial for first degree murder of three women.  When asked why he did it, he says that the women had the ability to have children and he didn't, and they were wasting it being "pond scum".  Scroll down to the Affidavit.  If "gender identity" is the same thing as sex, then this is a hate crime.  Richard, "Sherri", Masbruch who "identifies as a woman" tied two women up and sadistically shocked them with an electrical wire before raping them.  He had his penis when he did this, but he is a "woman" now.  This sure seems like a hate crime to me, but it's not a hate crime because the victims were only female.  What Sandy Jo Battista, born male, did to female children should be considered a hate crime, but again the victims were born female so it doesn't count.  What Paula Witherspoon did to his female victim should be considered a hate crime, but the victim was only a female.

It seems so strange to me that the only time violence against a woman is a hate crime is when the woman was born male.

my daughter lives as a girl, is on puberty blockers until old enough for cross homones and like some other transgender girls, looks forward to the gender affirming surgical procedures that will resolve the accident of birth.

What does "living like a girl" mean?  Try explaining "living like a girl" to me without evoking sex stereotypes.  It's impossible to do.  A male child who is different than other boys, is more sensitive, and a bit effeminate isn't a girl.  He is just a little boy who is different.  Why do we have to slap any label on a child?  Isn't it possible that adults are simply projecting their own biased views of gender on their young children?  That is, their own views of what society says is proper feminine and masculine behavior?  Or, they read something about transgender online and come to the conclusion that their three year old boy isn't masculine enough so he is really a "girl".

I know I've went over this before, but it's worth repeating.  Children lack the mental capacity to make informed decisions.  The prefrontal cortex of the brain sometimes called the judgment center of the brain isn't fully formed until the mid to early twenties. They lack maturity and judgment.  I argue that children lack the judgment necessary to make informed consent.  Do they understand what GnRH agonists (puberty suppression) are?  Infertility is an issue, especially if the GnRH agonists are followed by cross gender hormones.  We don't let children vote, take out bank loans, or buy alcohol, but they are supposedly mature enough to willingly give up their fertility.  Besides infertility, I seriously doubt if everyone knows the long term effects of these drugs on developing adolescent bodies.  Google Lupron.  This was one of the GnRH agonists that was given to children.

my daughter, born with an xy arrangement, knew before she was 3 that she was a girl.

Three years old.....I'm sure.....

What is XY arrangement?  This is a male child, and don't prattle on about DSD because disorders of sexual development are NOT the same as transgender.  So, I'm assuming we have a biological male who knew at age 3 that he was a "girl". Most rational people see this as child abuse.

" my daughter lives as a girl, is on puberty blockers until old enough for cross homones and like some other transgender girls, looks forward to the gender affirming surgical procedures that will resolve the accident of birth."

A male child "lives as a girl", but never will be female even if he is sterilized and castrated.

WTF is an "accident of birth"?  If a child is born perfectly healthy, how is it an "accident of birth"?  Calling a perfectly healthy child an "accident of birth" smacks of child abuse.  Hey Kid! You are "an accident of birth".

If GnRH agonists are followed by cross gender hormones, infertility is an issue.  We are talking about sterilizing children.  I hope to hell you are right about what you are doing.  Sterilizing children is often viewed as a human rights abuse.  Wait ten or fifteen years and see the lawsuits involving the drugged, damaged, and infertile adults.

Can we honestly say that GnRH agonists are completely safe for healthy developing adolescent bodies.

my daughter, born with an xy arrangement, knew before she was 3 that she was a girl.  how can these people claim, with a gender neutral mom and home life, that she was responding to a societal gender binary, we didn't even have t.v.!

furthermore, how can these women born xx by accident of birth detest the women born xy by accident of birth?

how can there be such hatred against transgender women?  who have left the privilege of assigned maleness to be who they know themselves to be!  what threat do these pose to the terfs that they should be so awful and so blind?!

I would like to return to the teenage boy that the State of Connecticut finally came to its senses and placed in a juvenile facility for boys.  Who speaks for the girls and female staff that he repeatedly assaulted?

"...November 2013 pleaded guilty to assault on an officer"

"Director of CJTS testified there were eleven occasions in which police were called to either a facility or program regarding an incident with the respondent."

"A supervisor from juvenile detention center in Bridgeport stated the respondent exhibited assaultive behaviors toward staff members, other juveniles....The supervisor stated that her behavior was more severe than other residents.

....CJTS director...specific behaviors that make the respondent especially dangerous and difficult to secure: an inability to de-escalate, targeting of female staff, and smearing feces......"..."The respondent then ripped at her (female correctional officer) and bit her, leaving puncture wounds.  All three fell to the ground, after which the respondent, wearing army boots kicked and assaulted the staff member in the head, arm, face, and ear.  The assaulted officer believes she was kicked six times.  She estimated that the respondent weighed approximately 180 pounds and stood five foot eight inches compared to her 135 pounds and five foot five inches.."

It's unconscionable to place a violent adolescent male with female juvenile offenders.  Many of these girls have experienced severe abuse at the hands of male relatives, and some have been sexually trafficked.  I understand that this very troubled young man has experienced abuse, but so have the girls he assaulted. Female juveniles who have experienced repeated trauma in their lives had to witness further violence when this young man acted out.  Who cares about their psychological well-being?

Why isn't  traumatizing juvenile females who probably already have PTSD because of sexual or physical abuse just as important as this dangerous and confused young man's "gender identity"?

Every female who has been injured and traumatized by this violent young man should sue the State of Connecticut.

I hope "Jane Doe" gets therapy for his deep emotional problems in the boy's facility.

The online death threats (scroll down) directed towards "TERFs" weren't meant just for Professor Jeffreys.  These death threats were directed towards any woman that certain transgender sources proclaim as "TERF".

Did people see the "Rid Fem" bug spray can with Professor Jeffreys and Professor Raymond's faces on the can?  It "Kills Rad Fems Instantly".  It says it's from *Trans Activists - a family company.

Ecology

Many people, whether radical feminist or not, are critical of high-tech medicine’s manipulation of the body through the reckless use of hormones and chemicals (which rarely have been proved to be safe) or the destruction of healthy tissue to conform to arbitrary beauty standards (cosmetic surgery such as breast augmentation, nose jobs, etc.).

From this ecological approach, such medical practices are part of a deeper problem in the industrial era of our failing to understand ourselves as organisms, shaped by an evolutionary history, and part of ecosystems that impose limits on all organisms.

People are not machines, and treating the human body like a machine is inconsistent with an ecological understanding of ourselves as living beings who are part of a larger living world.

Public Policy

The state should not limit people’s freedom to choose, when those choices do not harm others. Disagreements can, and do, arise over identifying and assessing harms.

Transgender claims have led to a variety of policy debates, especially concerning the integrity of female-only spaces that are designed to foster a sense of safety and expressive freedom for females generally (such as cultural institutions) and particularly to create safety for females who have been victims of male violence (such as rape crisis and domestic violence centers). Forcing female-only spaces to accommodate people who identify as transgender reinforces patriarchy as a system and harms individual females.

Public funding for sex-reassignment surgery (such as through Medicare) raises serious public health questions that cannot be resolved by simplistic freedom-to-choose arguments.

Transgender practices involving children that are questionable on public health grounds (such as the use of puberty blockers) raise serious moral questions about our collective obligation for children’s welfare.

Intellectual Practice and Rhetoric

As in any contentious political debate, angry and uncivil words have been exchanged. People on all sides should be respectful and careful in choices of language.

Labeling a radical feminist position on these public policy issues as inherently “transphobic” or describing radical feminist arguments on the issues as “hate speech” are diversionary tactics that undermine productive intellectual and political discussion. A critique of an idea is not a personal attack on any individual who holds the idea.

This critical analysis does not demand that people accept these principles in constructing an individual sense of self. These propositions are relevant to such individual decisions, but are presented in the context of collective decision-making about public policy.

Conclusion

Transgenderism is a liberal, individualist, medicalized response to the problem of patriarchy’s rigid, repressive, and reactionary gender norms. Radical feminism is a radical, structural, politicized response. On the surface, transgenderism may seem to be a more revolutionary approach, but radical feminism offers a deeper critique of the domination/subordination dynamic at the heart of patriarchy and a more promising path to liberation.”

Robert Jensen continued

Patriarchy

Today’s existing sex-role differentiation is the product of a patriarchal society based on male dominance. In that system, males are socialized into patriarchal masculinity to become men, and females are socialized into patriarchal femininity to become women.

In patriarchy, sex-role differentiation supports male power and helps make the system’s domination/subordination dynamic seem natural and normal. Moral, intellectual, and emotional traits are assigned differentially to each sex, creating what we today typically call gender roles. This patriarchal system of control—which is complex, adapting to changing conditions and to resistance—is designed to justify and perpetuate male dominance.

The gender roles in patriarchy are rigid, repressive, and reactionary. These roles constrain the healthy flourishing of both males and females, but females experience by far the most significant psychological and physical injuries from the system.

In patriarchy, gender is a category that functions to establish and reinforce inequality.

Radical Feminism

In contemporary culture, “radical” is often used dismissively as a synonym for “crazy” or “extreme.” In this context, it describes an analysis that seeks to understand, address, and eventually eliminate the root causes of inequality.

Radical feminism opposes patriarchy and male dominance. Radical feminism, which challenges the naturalizing of the process by which patriarchal societies turn male/female into man/woman, rejects patriarchy’s rigid, repressive, and reactionary gender roles.

Radical feminist politics addresses a wide range of issues, including men’s violence and sexual exploitation of women and children. Many radical feminists critique the gendered dress/grooming/presentation norms imposed on females in patriarchy, such as hyper-sexualized clothing, make-up, and ritualized behaviors of subordination, arguing for the elimination of these practices, not for males to adopt them as well.

The goal of radical feminism is a world without hierarchy, in which males and females would be free to explore the range of human experiences—especially experiences of love, whether sexual or not—in an egalitarian context.

Transgender

Transgender is defined as “A term for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth.” The transgender movement rejects the automatic sorting of males and females into the categories of man and woman, but does not necessarily reject gender roles. Some in the transgender movement embrace patriarchal gender roles typically attached to the cultural categories of masculinity and femininity.

While not all people who identify as transgender have sex-reassignment surgery or use hormones or other treatments to modify their bodies, the transgender movement as a whole accepts and/or embraces these practices.

Most radical feminists, who seek to eliminate patriarchy and patriarchal gender ideology, disagree with this transgender approach. Most radical feminists believe liberation is achieved through a political project that transcends patriarchal gender, rather than accepting those gender roles and merely seeking to allow people to move between the categories. Radical feminist politics focuses on challenging the patriarchal gender ideology that restricts the freedom of most individuals, especially women and others who lack power, to explore the fullest range of human experiences.

Nothing in a radical feminist analysis minimizes the social and/or psychological struggles of—nor provides support for violence against—people who identify as transgender or people who do not conform to patriarchal gender norms but do not identify as transgender. Radical feminism is not the cause of those struggles or the source of that violence but rather advocates for an egalitarian society with maximal freedom without violence.

Some Basic Propositions About Sex, Gender and Patriarchy

by ROBERT JENSEN

“Within feminism there has been for decades an often divisive debate about transgenderism. With increasing mainstream news media and pop culture attention focused on the issue, understanding that feminist debate is more important than ever.

Two new feminist books that analyze transgenderism (Sheila Jeffreys’ Gender Hurts: A Feminist Analysis of the Politics of Transgenderism and Michael Schwalbe’s Manhood Acts: Gender and the Practices of Domination, which includes a chapter on “The Limits of Trans Liberalism”) are helpful for those who are concerned about the harms that result from the imposition of traditional gender roles but do not embrace the ideological assumptions and assertions of the transgender movement.

The propositions below are not taken directly from those books, whose authors may not agree with my phrasings. I am not trying to summarize their arguments but instead hope to bring greater clarity to the debate with a concise account of my position, which is rooted in a radical feminist analysis of sex and gender. I present these ideas as a series of propositions to make it easier for readers to identify where they may agree or disagree.

Biological and Cultural

We are a sexually dimorphic species, male and female. Although there is variation, the vast majority of humans are born with distinctly male or female reproductive systems, sexual characteristics, and/or chromosomal structure. Intersex people are born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the definitions of female or male; the number of people in this category depends on the degree of ambiguity used to mark the category. Intersex conditions are distinct from transgenderism.

The biological differences between males and females that are tied to reproduction are not trivial; no species can ignore reproductive realities. Not all females have children, but only females can bear and breastfeed children, which no male can do. Therefore, human communities have always, and will always, recognize two distinct sex categories, male and female. There has always been, and always will be, some sex-role differentiation in human communities.

Other observable or measureable physical differences (average height, muscle mass, etc.) between males and females may be socially relevant depending on circumstances. Sex-role differentiation based on those differences may be appropriate if it can be shown to be necessary in the interests of everyone in a society. This claim is asserted far more often that is demonstrated.

People from varying ideological positions also claim that these biological differences give rise to significant differences in moral, intellectual, or emotional characteristics between males and females. While it is plausible that differences in reproductive organs and hormones could result in these kinds of differences, there is no clear evidence for these claims. Given the complexity of the human organism and the limits of contemporary research, it’s unlikely we will gain definitive understanding of these questions in the foreseeable future. In the absence of evidence of the biological bases for moral, intellectual, or emotional differences, we should assume that all or part of any differences in observed behavior between males and females in these matters are a product of cultural training, while remaining open to alternative explanations.

In short: males and females are far more similar than different.

Below is another example of “gender identity” laws running rough shod over the privacy rights of women.  This is not something this elderly woman chose.

“I am a senior woman. Recently, a “man” claiming to be transgender, who had not yet begun physical treatments, was permitted by our local Y to use the women’s locker room. There are no secure change rooms. The person they allowed in was not courteous and stared at me while I struggled out of a wet bathing suit. He was naked, had an erection and playfully asked ‘do you come here often?’ I understand that gender is no longer judged solely by genitalia, but does a brief contact with the duty manager mean that men not yet committed to gender reassignment are free to disrobe anywhere they choose?”

http://www.thestar.com/life/2014/01/04/transgender_mans_behaviour_in_changeroom_unacceptable_gallinger.html

It didn’t take long for women to respond.

An excellent response to this article entitled, “Trans rights trump women’s rights” was posted online.

Transgender man’s ogling behaviour unacceptable, Jan. 4

“Ontarians accept that it is a challenging life for people with transgendered identities, which is why providing a reasonable alternative via the use of separate unisex bathrooms or change rooms seems to be a reasonable course of action to assist such individuals. Why is this reasonable and simple accommodation not enough for the minuscule minority of transgendered individuals among the millions of Ontarians?

Our “decision-makers” at the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal have decided for all Ontarians that it’s not enough for a trans person to view himself as the opposite sex — the whole world must be forced to share his subjective view, too.

The new transgender bathroom policy has affirmed that the vast majority of Ontarian women and men are not entitled to the protection of the Human Rights Code as much as transsexuals are. What about the feelings, discomfort, and safety of the millions of girls and women in Ontario who are now forced to undress in the same change room with a pre-operation phenotypic male, who may claim to be transsexual?

Do our rights get trumped because an individual subjectively “feels” female even though he may still have a penis, and be more than happy to show it off? Did the OHRT consult Ontarians regarding their decision?

I am concerned that sexually predatory men will take advantage of the new bill by claiming they are transsexual in order to freely access any women’s washroom in the province. The guaranteed consequences of this bill are that many girls and women will definitely be victimized as a result.

Mr. Gallinger’s article suggests that this is already happening — hardly a surprise — and the trend will likely increase because there are no legal consequences for any predatory individuals who behave in this way. A predator banned from one facility simply has to go down the road to another.

Mr. Gallinger bemoans the predatory behaviour that one poor woman was forced to endure, while actively supporting a system that allows such predatory behaviour to flourish. Far more women than trans people stand to feel invaded and helpless by such behaviour as there are likely far more sexually predatory individuals out there than transgendered people — predatory individuals who will be delighted to put on a dress (or not even that) in order to access women’s bathrooms and change rooms under the guise of being self-identified as “transgendered.”

Although a transgendered person may feel s/he has the “right” to be in a women’s change room, what about the feelings of the phenotypic females who may not wish a phenotypic male to be in that washroom?

We women are entitled to the protection of the Human Rights Code, just like anyone else. Exactly how many transsexual people are there for whom we are risking the safety and security of our roughly 6.8 million girls and women?”

ALSO, EVEN AFTER IT WAS REVEALED THAT PAULA (PAUL) WITHERSPOON IS A REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER WHO MOLESTED A GIRL, TRANS ACTIVISTS STILL DEFENDED HIS "RIGHT" TO USE A WOMEN'S RESTROOM.

A transgender woman who was ticketed for using the women’s restroom at a Dallas hospital says her status as a convicted sex offender should not play a role in the citation.

" I mean, as a feminist activist, I understand the most important piece to feminism is choices, yet these alleged feminists want to deny tans women their choices, which seems very anti-feminist to me. How tragic."

This individual states, "I understand the most important piece to feminism is choices.".  This is a lovely sentiment, but not everyone is equal, and we know where women stand in relation to men in terms of economics and political power.  Besides, women are conditioned to put the interests of any and everybody before their needs.

Below are examples of transgender rights trumping the safety and fundamental privacy rights of girls and women.

WHY WAS REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER, CHRISTOPHER, "JESSICA", HAMBROOK ALLOWED IN TWO DIFFERENT WOMEN'S SHELTERS WHERE HE PREYED ON A DEAF HOMELESS WOMAN.  IT GOES LIKE THIS.  BECAUSE OF TRANSGENDER ACTIVISTS AND THEIR LAWYERS, WOMEN'S SHELTERS AND OTHER OGRANIZATIONS FEEL PRESSURE TO OPEN UP THEIR DOORS TO ANY MALE WHO CLAIMS TRANSGENDER STATUS.

SINCE WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT OF "CHOICES", HIS RIGHTS TRUMPED THE RIGHTS OF HOMLESS WOMEN.  DID THESE HOMELESS WOMEN GET TO CHOOSE WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANTED TO SHARE SLEEPING QUARTERS WITH HAMBROOK?

Predator who claimed to be transgender declared dangerous offender

TORONTO – A sexual predator who falsely claimed to be transgender and preyed on women at two Toronto shelters was jailed indefinitely on Wednesday. He noted the Montreal man, 37, attacked four vulnerable females between the ages of five and 53 in Montreal and Toronto over the past 12 years. “He has demonstrated from the age of 12 until the present an inability to control his sexual impulses,” said McMahon.

Justice John McMahon declared Christopher Hambrook — who claimed to be a transgender woman named Jessica — was a dangerous offender”

Please note that under sex it says, “F”. At the time of this incident, Francis definitely had male genitalia. Scroll on down and see where it says, “her male genitalia”. Yes, this campus police report says, “her legs open with her male genitalia showing “. This is how insane “gender identity” laws have become. For those unfamiliar with this incident, Francis is a retired military man who was married a couple of times and has children. At the time of this campus police report, he was taking classes at Evergreen State College.

" I mean, as a feminist activist, I understand the most important piece to feminism is choices, yet these alleged feminists want to deny tans women their choices, which seems very anti-feminist to me. How tragic."

I respect this individuals opinions, but we differ on so many topics.

Biological males are not female, and adult females are called women.  Trans women are not female, and they are not women.  They are human beings worthy of respect, but they are not women.  No one can force me to believe this, and the vast majority of people don't believe it either.  As to choices, I'm more concerned with the choices and opportunities that given to girls and women.

Every woman deserves to speak her mind based on her particular beliefs.  This is what I'm struggling to understand.  Since this individual identifies as a feminist activists, this is my question.  What do feminist think and do when women are receiving online death threats because of their political beliefs?  Why do women remain silent when other women are being intimidated, and bullied into silent submission?

I don't care what anyone does as long as it doesn't interfere with my rights, or the rights of others, particularly girls and women.  Did this person take the time to read articles about the violent young adolescent male named "Jane Doe" who was housed in a female juvenile facility?  Finally, the State of Connecticut came to its sense.  I would like this individual to look deep into her heart and ask herself one question.  Why was a young man with a long history of violence even doing in a juvenile facility for girls?  I'm pleased to see that he was finally placed in a facility for boys, but the acts of violence committed against these girls and female staff members can't be undone.  Many of these female juveniles have experienced extreme trauma and abuse.

This individual talks about "choices", but it's a fact the adolescent male named "Jane Doe" was given more choices than the girls and female staff he repeatedly assaulted.  Why was his needs more important than the safety of girls and female staff that he repeatedly assaulted?

Unlike this young man who has a six attorneys, who represents these girls?  What choices did they have?  The adolescent male named "Jane Doe" is just one example of transgender rights trampling on the rights of girls and women.

The media  refuses to report that his sex is male because in politically correct land the potential hurt feelings of a male who wishes to be female take precedent over the safety of actual women and girls. That's why they use confusing language to make it sound like an actual female is being transferred to a male facility when it's not the case. Jane is a male who violently assaults females, including the staffers in every facility he's been too. The reason he is incarcerated in the first place is because he plead guilty to assaulting an officer.

CJTS director, "an inability to de-escalate, targeting of female staff...incidents became steadily more aggressive and intense as the respondent increased in size and strength."..."The respondent then ripped at her (female correctional officer) and bit her, leaving puncture wounds.

"Some of the wackos posting in the comment section don't seem to get that by ranting on and on with hundreds of 2000 word comments, they are nicely making the point of this article as to just how unhinged they really are."

There is so much information that needs to be discussed, and it can't be addressed with a few sentences.

I tried to bring up the important subject of GnRH agonists and cross gender hormones that are given to children.  So-called TERFs and Radfems aren't the only people to question the ethical implications of drugging children.  Scroll down to see comments from Robert Jensen.  History is littered with various medical fads and trends that turned into ghastly experiments.

Below is the response from BRENNASCHOOL.  I'm assuming he is transgender.  Does this sound logical, and who is wacko?  BRENNASCHOOL states, "You are the dancing religious zealots around abortion centers, the neo nazi's parading against jews and blacks, the white hooded KKK trying to make the case for the black mans inferiority."

>>>>WHAT BRENNASCHOOL SAID...

"We are talking about delaying nature till the person is of legal age to decide. It does exactly the opposite of what the children want because they want to start hormones like their friends do. You haven't a clue what its like to watch people around you develop physically as you get farther away from who you are . To feel like you are being betrayed by the world around you and your own body.  Your political views taint everything you say with your hate. You are the dancing religious zealots around abortion centers, the neo nazi's parading against jews and blacks, the white hooded KKK trying to make the case for the black mans inferiority."

>>>>THIS IS WHAT I SAID...

Lupron is one of the GnRH agonists that has been given to "transgender" 12 and 13 year old children.  There have been horrible side effects from Lupron.

Even trans sources admit that Infertility is an issue, especially if the GnRH agonists are followed by cross gender hormones.  Besides, I seriously doubt if everyone knows the long term effects of GnRH  agonists on healthy children.  Please keep in mind that we are drugging physically healthy children for what basically amounts to a questionable psychological diagnosis.

This class of drugs, GnRH agonists, are used to treat hormone sensitive advanced prostate cancer and severe endometriosis in women. They shut down the hormones that stimulate tumor growth and spur the growth of endometrial tissues. GnRH agonists are also used for precocious puberty (puberty when kids shouldn’t normally go through puberty). Precocious puberty is NOT the same thing as transgender.  Completing puberty too early means the child may have fewer growth years. The kid may not reach his or her expected adult height.

The transgender community and the clinics who prescribe puberty suppressing drugs to children always say that they are reversible. This is only partially true and they know it. The GnRH agonists start at puberty, and depending on where people live, with parental approval, cross gender hormones can start at age 16. Some children go straight from puberty suppressing drugs to cross gender hormones.

Treatment with puberty delaying drugs leads to sterilization if it is followed with the administration of cross sex hormones at 16 years, as the Brill and Pepper handbook on “transgender” children (2008), explains, “the choice to progress from GnRH inhibitors to estrogen without fully experiencing male puberty should be viewed as giving up one’s fertility, and the family and child should be counseled accordingly” (Brill & Pepper, 2008, p. 216). For girls, sterilization is the outcome too, because “eggs do not mature until the body goes through puberty” (Brill & Pepper, 2008, p. 216).

Do parents have the right to compromise the future fertility of their children? This could be construed as a human rights violation.

Deliberate delaying a normal part of human development, adolescence, because of what basically amounts to a questionable psychiatric diagnosis in healthy children assumes all the following:

(a.) The diagnosis of “gender dysphoria” is correct to being with, and there isn’t something else going on in the child’s life.

(b.) The child is completely free from any parental, peer, or cultural influences. How much is “gender dysphoria” in a 12 year old child, and how do we separate this from everything the parents read on transgender websites and blogs? How much is actual “gender dysphoria” or GID and how much is parental discomfort at having a child that doesn’t fit neatly into sex based gender roles?

(c.) Children have the mental capacity and maturity to make informed decisions.

It’s a scientific fact that the pre-frontal cortex of the human brain which is sometimes called the judgment center of the brain isn’t fully developed until the early to mid-twenties.

”The prefrontal cortex, the part of the frontal lobes lying just behind the forehead, is often referred to as the “CEO of the brain.” This brain region is responsible for cognitive analysis and abstract thought, and the moderation of “correct” behavior in social situations. The prefrontal cortex takes in information from all of the senses and orchestrates thoughts and actions to achieve specific goals.2 This brain region gives an individual the capacity to exercise “good judgment” when presented with difficult life situations.

Another good post about the violent young man named "Jane Doe".

"This is a violent male. The official documents state that “Jane” is “the most violent in the history of the facility” He has gotten far more special treatment because he is a male claiming to be a female. The actual victims, girls, have not gotten six
attorneys. All they have gotten is repeatedly attacks, jaws broken, nearly
scalped by this violent this male. The state owes girls in their custody safety
from male violence and the state failed their obligation to all the girls
exposed and injured and traumatized. All these girls have been denied their
rights. The reality is if he was not a male and was a girl he would not have
had all the special snowflake attention and attorneys. Why do his “feelings”
and his “identify” matter more than girls’ lives?. The memo from the judge states he hates females and only attacks females. Which fits with the violent sociopathic pathology. Striped of the PC bunting, Transgender rights groups are de facto men’s rights advocates and care not at all for the welfare of girls or women. They seek to push their male right to have access to female safe space—the new
social justice cause-- males’ right to beat females and then "act all girly" and play victim for all the good people in la la land. I hope the victims sue the state for millions. They deserve every penny. And this boy should be tried as an adult this time."

Undoubtedly these injured women and girls don’t have six lawyers and a horde of trans activists advocating for them, as their suffering is being ignored by the media. Connecticut DCF even tried to send this youth to an expensive therapeutic boarding school designed for troubled and violent young people, but Jane was sent back to Connecticut after attacking a female staff member, biting her and kicking her repeatedly in the head until she suffered brain damage. Jane has been given more chances and more consideration than any other youth in the system, male or female, and it is time to show some concern for Jane’s victims.” The boy will be 18 soon and the he can go to big boy prison."

Good letter to the editor...

"Attorney Aaron Romano's reaction to hearing that his client was accused of committing another attack was repulsive [courant.com, July 13, "Transgender Youth Accused Of Assaulting Staff In Middletown"]. A staff member and youth in treatment were allegedly assaulted by the individual referred to as Jane Doe. Rather than being concerned about possible harm to them, Romano's worry was that he wasn't called. It's no wonder lawyers are viewed so poorly.

A judge found Jane Doe represented a sufficient danger to others to justify custodial incarceration. Romano and his pack brought enough pressure to overrule that decision. Now two more people, one a child in state care, are hurt.

Absent the transgender label, it is doubtful any of this would have occurred. Jane Doe has received extraordinary attention, and apparently deferential treatment, that a self-identified male in similar circumstance would have never known.

With six lawyers, the resources being squandered are staggering. If Romano and his five brethren want to truly help children, they should take all that talent and volunteer to tutor in needy schools. If Romano truly wants Jane Doe in a foster setting, he should provide one, rather than going to court to make others live up to the strength of his convictions."

I would like to follow up on the adolescent male with a history of violence known as "Jane Doe". For the sake of girls and women, and not knowing what to do with him, he is finally placed in a facility for boys where he belongs.   "Jane Doe" is a biological male adolescent that  the State of Connecticut once housed in  female juvenile correctional facilities.  Why was this violent young man even placed with adolescent girls?  Why isn't anyone interested in the girls and female staff that he repeatedly assaulted?  Don't they matter?    Not  once has anyone from "Justice For Jane" ever expressed any sympathy for the girls and female staff he repeated assaulted.

Why are all the news reports on this falsely claiming that this youth was detained without criminal charges?  "Jane "(an adolescent male with a long history of violence) was convicted of assault on an officer on November 21, 2013 and given a sentence of 18 months in juvenile detention.  He also had previous juvenile convictions for assault. Jane, a violent young man, was moved to the women's prison in May after he continued to attack girls and women at the girls' juvenile centers, and it was determined that those centers did not have sufficient security to protect the other inmates from Jane's attacks. Under pressure from transgender advocates, he was moved back into a girls' facility a short time ago, but Jane attacked again, so Jane has been moved to the only youth facility deemed to have the necessary security to protect the other youth from Jane's attacks. At this point, Jane has lost the privilege of having unfettered access to female victims because Jane has shown repeatedly that females are not safe around Jane.

These are earlier court records detailing his long history of assaulting female staff.  Indeed, he tends to target female staff.  CJTS director, "an inability to de-escalate, targeting of female staff...incidents became steadily more aggressive and intense as the respondent increased in size and strength."..."The respondent then ripped at her (female correctional officer) and bit her, leaving puncture wounds.

" Whoa... run the other way when hate starts getting thrown around, so too when people start telling others how they should live their lives and what services they should be able to access."

We know which way the hate gets thrown around. Scroll down to see death threats against TERFs.

As to "accessing services", I wish that people would stop pretending that "transitioning" ("top surgery", "bottom surgery", facial feminization for MTFs, hormones, and GnRH agonists and cross gender hormones for children) aren't being promoted by transgender sources, plastic surgeons, and "gender therapists".  People can go online for half an hour or so of Skype therapy from a gender therapist who will write a letter for hormones.  I've read numerous accounts of people walking into a doctor's office and getting a prescription for hormones after one or two visits.

Has this person ever seen FTM "top surgery" (double incision mastectomy with areola and nipple grafting)?  Because male areolas and nipples are smaller, the surgeon literally cuts off the areola and nipple and surgically trims it down to size, and then sews it back on after the double mastectomy.  Loss of sensation is common, and every now and then a nipple falls off.

Watch the entire video to see what it entails.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEKPz5zuDjc

This is what botched "top surgery" looks like.

"Damien said he was traumatized by the idea of his nipple falling off in his hand and the resident said that if it happened, he could just “throw it in the garbage.”

Damien was hospitalized in December with another surgical infection and spent another six days in hospital. Prior to Christmas, his surgeon came to see him for a couple of minutes at which point he cut off Damien’s nipple with a pair of scissors."

THANKFULLY, THIS FTM (BIOLOGICAL FEMALE WHO "TRANSITIONS") WAS ABLE TO RAISE ENOUGH MONEY ONLINE TO REPAIR WHAT THE FIRST SURGEON DID.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/damien-leggett-surgery-fund--2

Nancy/Nathan Verhelst was so depressed after botched sex reassignment surgery that she asked a doctor to euthanize her.  I would say a person has to be pretty depressed to ask a doctor to euthanize them.  From everything I've read, Verhelst came from a very dysfunctional family and probably was too emotional fragile to undergo SRS.  Still, she was "transitioned".  This woman went to her grave with a mutilated body she found repulsive.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2440086/Belgian-transsexual-Nathan-Verhelst-44-elects-die-euthanasia-botched-sex-change-operation.html

THESE ARE OTHER EXAMPLES OF BOTCHED "TOP SURGERY"

"The surgery seemed to have gone well until a week later, when he removed the bandages to take out the drains. Then I saw the scars were large and very uneven, and my nipples still looked female. He seemed perplexed about why “they” had not stitched the drain in on one side. (He never told me anyone else would be involved in the surgery, and denied that anyone was afterward.) He assured me the scars would fade to nothing and my nipples would flatten out on their own in a few months, then he taped my wounds (insufficiently), and sent me home a few days later… …without a prescription for antibiotics. By the time my designated driver took me home (only a few hours later), my wounds were aching and oozing, and I had to go to the emergency care clinic because they had become infected. After a little internet research, I discovered Dr. Leis has a long record of infections due to his unwillingness to prescribe preventative antibiotics after surgery. (As for the stipulation that he does not wear gloves, I can’t comment, because I don’t know.)"

http://www.susans.org/Sex_Reassignment_Surgery/FTM_Surgeons/6924.html

The thing about these SRS is this.  If you are wrong about it, or if it's botched, it is mutilation.  Also, if a surgeon takes a scalpel to sensitive genitals, there is no way to completely rule out loss of sensation.

" Of course we should take great care with children. I'm a parent of two, now adults. Parents and others should never ask leading questions of a child manifesting possible inner gender issues. Listen. Pay attention. Love. "

"I don't know what to think of this sentence.

"Parents and others should never ask leading questions of a child manifesting possible inner gender issues."

They are doing far more than asking leading questions.  This is what is happening, and intuitively most people can recognize what is going on.   When we are talking about 5 and 6 year old children, adults are projecting their particular views of what they see as appropriate gender roles on their children.  In very young children, it's impossible to completely separate parental attitudes and cultural influences (everything parents see on t.v. or read online) from actual "gender dysphoria".   The mother sees something on t.v. about transgender kids, or transgender, and starts to worry about little 4 year old Billy because he doesn't like sports or toy cars.  Little Billy won't throw a football.  Perhaps he is just a quiet 4 year old boy who would rather look at books or draw.

There are numerous articles of 5, 6, and 7 year old "transgender" children.  How can rational people not see the potential for abuse in slapping a label on such a young child?   If the parent doesn't like what one therapist says, he or she can always drag the poor kid to a "gender therapist" who will declare the 5 year old kid "transgender".  No one is allowed to look at the family dynamics, and what is going on in the minds of the parents.  Perhaps we should be examining the parents and their attitudes, beliefs, values, motivations, etc. For example, the mother of Coy Mathis, the 6 year old "trans" boy, gave birth to her triplets in a kiddie pool in the living room. It's true, and all people have to do is google it.  Coy was one of triplets, and his sister is severely disabled.  Some mothers on triplet blogs say she is very attention seeking.

Below is something from endocrinologists who make $$$ hella money from drugging children with GnRH agonists and cross gender hormones.  Start the kid out on GnRH agonists at puberty, follow this up with cross gender hormones at age 16 that have to be taken basically for life.

1.3. We recommend that physicians evaluate and ensure that applicants (**who are the applicants - kids) understand the reversible and irreversible effects of hormone suppression (e.g.,GnRH analogue treatment) and cross-sex hormone treatment before they start hormone treatment.

***Trans sources always say that there are no irreversible effects, but even endocrinologists admit that there are.

1.4. We recommend that all transsexual individuals (**they mean children) be informed and counseled regarding options for fertility prior to initiation of puberty suppression in adolescents and prior to treatment with sex hormones of the desired sex in both adolescents and adults.

https://www.endocrine.org/~/media/endosociety/Files/Publications/Clinical%20Practice%20Guidelines/Endocrine-Treatment-of-Transsexual-Persons.pdf

***Please note that these are children they are talking about, AND CHILDREN AREN'T MATURE ENOUGH TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS.  The prefrontal cortex which is commonly referred to as the judgment center of the brain isn't fully developed until the early to mid-twenties.  This is why teenagers aren't allowed to smoke ,buy alcohol, sign legal documents, vote, fly jet planes, etc.

If a physician went to an ethics board and said, "I'm going to give drugs to healthy children that I know will make them infertile", I don't think it would go over very well.

This is an experiment being carried out on healthy children.  This is being done to children.

If people compare high paying medical specialists like cardiologists and orthopedic surgeons to what endocrinologists earn, I can see why endocrinologists would support GnRH agonists (puberty suppression).  It's about creating a demand and filling it.  It's interesting to me because the endocrinologists have to depend on therapists to tell them which children are "transgender".  Psychiatry really has a checkered past with all the lobotomies and all.   Endocrinologists are drugging healthy children with GnRH agonists and cross gender hormones, rendering them infertile.  All this is based on a psychological diagnosis in children that may or may not be accurate, and, according to studies, the child usually outgrows.

bear_n_boo
bear_n_boo

" That said, I'm pro-choice, in my feminist activism, on reproductive rights, and on self-determination."

I'm pro-choice too, and have always been.  I fully support reproductive rights for everyone.  Unfortunately, for children who are given GnRH agonists followed by cross gender hormones,  these children are infertile.  We are talking about sterilizing children which is generally viewed as  a human abuse.

"Yet there are instances where blockers are appropriate on the approach to puberty. This should be undertaken after much evaluation and with monitoring. In the end, it delays only."

The prefrontal cortex takes in information from all of the senses and orchestrates thoughts and actions to achieve specific goals.1,2 This brain region gives an individual the capacity to exercise “good judgment” when presented with difficult life situations.

TEENAGERS AREN'T ALLOWED TO VOTE, BUY ALCOHOL, OR TAKE OUT A BANK LOAN, BUT THEY ARE SUPPOSEDLY MATURE ENOUGH TO WILLINGLY GIVE UP THEIR FERTILTIY AND JEOPARDIZE HEALTH.

STERILIZING CHILDREN IS USUALLY VIEWED AS A HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE.  I HOPE TO HELL PEOPLE ARE RIGHT ABOUT IT.

ALL IT TAKES IS ONE OR TWO LAWSUITES FROM THE DRUGGED, DAMAGED, AND INFERTILE ADULTS TO BRING AN END TO THIS ORWELLIAN EXPERIMENT ON CHILDREN.

Whoa... run the other way when hate starts getting thrown around, so too when people start telling others how they should live their lives and what services they should be able to access.

Of course we should take great care with children. I'm a parent of two, now adults. Parents and others should never ask leading questions of a child manifesting possible inner gender issues. Listen. Pay attention. Love.

Yet there are instances where blockers are appropriate on the approach to puberty. This should be undertaken after much evaluation and with monitoring. In the end, it delays only.

That said, I'm pro-choice, in my feminist activism, on reproductive rights, and on self-determination. It isn't up to anyone else to define me. Chill out, accept, and get along. Life is too damn short to start foisting these ridiculous judgments upon one another.

>>>>.TESSA STUART:

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY TO THE FEMALE VICTIMS OF "JANE DOE", THE ADOLESCENT MALE WITH A HISTORY OF VIOLENT ATTACKS ON GIRLS AND WOMEN?

bear_n_boo
bear_n_boo

I'm pleased to hear that the State of Connecticut has finally come to its senses and placed a violent male juvenile, "Jane Doe", in a correctional facility for boys.  This is where he belongs. Placing a male with a history of violence in a facility for female juveniles was a mistake that endangered the safety of juvenile females and female staff members.  I hope every female who has been injured by this adolescent male sues the State of Connecticut.

The p.c. whipped media dutifully uses female pronouns in reference to the adolescent male know as "Jane Doe", but people in corrections know what is going on, and this is why they sent him to a correctional facility for boys.  It's outrageous and a travesty of justice that no one takes time to mention the girls and women that he has repeatedly attacked.

The juvenile justice system didn't know what to do with him.  He has indeed been charged with, and is currently serving a sentence for, assault on an officer. That information is clear from the court documents. The male known as "Jane" has been moved to several settings, not because of transgenderism, but because of violence to females. He attacks and often injures females in a variety of settings; there is no sufficiently secure setting for females that is enough to protect the vulnerable population from this very strong, violent, and motivated attacker. He was even sent to an expensive out of state therapeutic boarding school to try to address emotional and violence issues, but Jane was removed to Connecticut after attacking, biting, and repeatedly kicking a female in the head while wearing heavy boots, causing grave injury. Jane has exhausted all the options for a traditional female setting, which is why the state has asked the court for help in placing Jane in a more secure environment. Jane was not in solitary at the women's jail; the social workers wanted Jane to go to school and socialize with the other young female inmates, but Jane refused. Jane has refused to cooperate with counseling or social groups at female or male facilities.  He is a very difficult and troubled youth, like many of the youth in state custody, but the state also has to consider the physical and emotional safety of other youth in these centers.

This is his history and earlier court records.  They can call him "she" or "her" all they want, but he has a history of violence and should have NEVER been placed with females.  CJTS director, "an inability to de-escalate, targeting of female staff...incidents became steadily more aggressive and intense as the respondent increased in size and strength."..."The respondent then ripped at her (female correctional officer) and bit her, leaving puncture wounds.

There are some profound and compelling ethical issues regarding transitioning, especially the use of GnRH agonists and cross gender hormones on children. Scroll down to read earlier posts.   I hope to heck people are right about this because the sterilization of children is usually viewed as a human rights abuse.  By the way, it's not only radical feminists who are making these comments.

Moreover, please stop pretending that "transitioning" procedures ("top surgery", "bottom surgery", facial feminization for MTFs, hormones, and GnRH agonists and cross gender hormones for children) aren't being pushed by transgender sources, plastic surgeons, and Big Pharma.

"Cotton Ceiling" continued...

Trans women across the Anglophone world have identified these issues in our lives and are now engaging more and more in organizing around this. The workshop at the Pleasure and Possibilities Conference is a safer space for trans women to get together, name our experiences of oppression and exclusion, and discuss ways of changing culture to break down these barriers – as fits with the theme of the conference which is centred around overcoming the sexual barriers various groups of marginalized women experience.

Thanks. So, just to make sure I understand this, a trans woman with a penis, and who has no desire to have a sex change, is not male bodied – correct?

This is seriously problematic for lesbians. What you are saying is lesbians – who desire sex with females – are somehow bigoted for that desire, no? That’s exactly what nontrans males say to us.

I have not actually been speaking about lesbian-identified women specifically, though they are some of the women who are within the category of queer women.

Trans women are female. When our female-ness and womanhood is denied, as you keep doing repeatedly, that is transphobic and transmisogynist. As I said earlier, all people’s desires are influenced by an intersection of cultural messages that determine those desires. Cultural messages that code trans women’s bodies as male are transphobic, and those messages influence people’s desires. So cis queer women who are attracted to other queer women may not view trans women as viable sexual partners because they have internalized the message that trans women are somehow male.

The comparison to what cis males say also makes no sense. What trans women are saying is that we are women, and thus should be considered women sexually, and thus be considered viable partners for women who are attracted to women. What cis males are saying is that queer women shouldn’t be exclusively attracted to women, which is completely different.

I don’t want to put words in your mouth. I want to understand what you are saying. Trans women may be women, but they are not female. A penis is not a female organ.

It’s not completely different to lesbians, and it’s not completely different at all. Lesbians are sexually attracted to females. This does not include trans women with penises.

What you say makes sense *only* if you believe the fiction that people with penises are *female.* Correct?

Hi there,

The cotton ceiling is a theory proposed by trans porn star and activist Drew DeVeaux to explain the experiences queer trans women have with simultaneous social inclusion and sexual exclusion within the broader queer women’s communities. Basically, it means that cis queer women will be friends with us and talk day and night about trans rights and ending transmisogyny, but will still not consider us viable sexual partners.

The term cotton ceiling is a reference to the “glass ceiling” that second wave feminist identified in the workforce, wherein women could only advance so high in the workforce but could not break through into positions of power and authority. The cotton represents underwear, signifying sex.

The theory of the cotton ceiling is useful in identifying the dynamic trans women are experiencing, and is meant to open up conversation around desirability’s intersections with transmisogyny and transphobia.

I hope this description is helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.

I think that everyone has the right to decide who they want to have sex with, how they want to have that sex, and when they want to have that sex, or to not have sex at all. Consent is incredibly important, and no one should ever feel pressured to have sex of any kind with anybody.

However, I also think that people’s desires are often influenced by (and even dictated by) an intersectionality of cultural messages which include transphobia, transmisogyny, racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and xenophobia, among many other factors. This is a topic that many within the feminist movements and womanist movements have discussed in terms of racism, shade-ism, classim, and ableism, and is also being discussed now in reference to transphobia and transmisogyny. I believe that many cis queer women do not see queer trans women as viable sexual partners in large part due to the cultural messages that exist, both within queer culture and mainstream/straight culture, that tell us that trans women’s bodies are inherently undesirable except as a fetish for cis straight men. I also think that it is rooted in the belief that trans women are not women, which is transphobic and transmisogynist.

Women are told that violence is unacceptable, time and time again.  When women are accused of violence because of “misgendering,” they often change their tone nearly immediately.  It doesn’t seem like it matters much whether there are four lights or five, after all.  What’s the difference?  And if it’ll stop me from getting accused of unfeminist behavior, if it’ll stop me being no-platformed, if it’ll stop all of this—if I can come back into the feminist fold—who’s to say two plus two hasn’t been five all along?

I used to use “she” to describe MTF trans people.  I used to use “he” to describe FTM trans people.  I will no longer engage in this practice, except for when directly speaking to trans people who could conceivably direct violence toward me.  Make no mistake, trans folks: many people outside your movement, even the ones who nod in agreement with the statement “trans women are women,” don’t really believe it.  When they are women, they have been trained to spare your feelings and to avoid potential conflict with males—especially those who are backed up by other males with violent tendencies.  I hope your pronouns feel like a hollow victory, wrested as they have been from the mouths of women who know the wrath they face for saying any other words but the ones you told them to say.

Remember this, when you’re told that misgendering is “violence”: “trans women are women” is a statement that is meaningless at best and is used a power exertion over women almost always, since they are not able to disagree or even clarify the speaker’s definition without being viciously attacked.

Do what you have to do, in order to get through your day.  But two plus two is never five.  There are always four lights.  And that corned beef sandwich he’s offering you is poison anyway (seriously, look it up).

We Are All Winston Smith Now continued...

Star Trek: The Next Generation borrows even more liberally from Orwell in its episode “Chain of Command: Part II,” even re-using the numbers four and five as the basis for the torture.  Picard’s captor insists there are five lights on a ceiling which, objectively, has only four.

Picard doesn’t yield to the torture—he’s rescued just in time.  Smith does, and is executed by the state once he truly loves Big Brother.  Lest anyone believe that starship captains are simply made from sterner stuff than a Winston Smith-style bureaucrat, the episode’s most poignant moment comes from its coda:

PICARD: One thing I didn’t put in my report… at the very end, he offered me a choice… between a life of comfort… or more torture… all I had to do was say there were five lights.

Troi regards him for a brief moment.

TROI: You didn’t say it…

PICARD: No… but I was going to. I was ready to tell him anything he wanted… anything at all. But more than that, I was beginning to believe there were five lights.

– Star Trek: The Next Generation (Chain of Command: Part II)

And therein lies the real lesson of all three works.  The goal of the torturers, in all cases, was not simply to urge the profession of belief.  The ideal party member, in Orwell’s 1984, is capable of a rather neat mental trick known as doublethink.

When a person doublethinks, they simultaneously believe something to be true and not true.  The government in 1984 tells its citizens, over and over, that “war is peace,” and “freedom is slavery.”  This enables editors like Winston to more readily change history, since people are more likely to accept being at war with a nation one day and at peace the next, for instance, if they believe that the two concepts aren’t really all that different.

Which brings us to a four-word statement:

“Trans women are women.”

I’d like to unpack this statement a little bit.  I’ve now asked a number of people making it to talk to me about what it means.  Specifically, I’ve asked them what “woman” means, in this sentence.  I’ve gotten the same answer repeatedly from trans advocates:

“A woman is a person who identifies as a woman.”

This is a statement that is literally devoid of content; a semantic nothing.  When one identifies “as a woman,” what is one identifying with?

When I have asked this question, the answers change drastically depending on the person I am speaking to.  Sometimes, I am told of boys who longed to have “the feeling of a hole between my thighs being filled” and who insist on surgery to correct their feelings of bodily wrongness (even when told that girls don’t feel a “hole” where their vaginas are), or who believed that a vagina, being cleft, would enable them to do the splits in a way their scrotum would not (just in case you’re reading this, V, splits are easier for girls because of their ligaments–not their vulvas).

Other times, I’ve heard of people feeling forced out by imposed sex roles.  “I always empathized more with women.”  “I have a softer side and abhor violence.” “I think I was supposed to be a dad, not a mom, because of the way I interact with my child.”  Many of these people profess to have little or no actual genital dysphoria, and are upset at the idea that such dysphoria is considered necessary to change sex on government forms and so forth.

In other words, when someone says “trans women are women,” they may be saying one of several things.  It can be, for instance, a statement that means “trans women have female brains.”  In this instance, “trans women are women” is being used cover for a much more controversial statement, one that forces the person saying it to agree with the notion that there is “brain sex,” a badly outmoded and anti-feminist idea.

Other times, “trans women are women” means “trans women feel they fit in better with women’s social roles.”  Again, this uses a deceptively simple four-word sentence to cover a much more problematic truth.

“Trans women are women” is a statement that means a hundred different things to a hundred different people, and it all hinges on this question: what does it mean to identify as a woman?  Simply saying that there is only one answer to this question (no matter what that answer is) will yield accusations of transphobia and cause in-fighting.  So the only safe statement—since more clear and unambiguous statements will lead to disagreement and strife—is the four-word mantra, “trans women are women.”

Yet this simple statement has worked to serve another purpose, as well.

In 1984, as well as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Babylon 5, counterfactual statements are used to wield power.

“If it’s lunchtime, you can have a sandwich.” It isn’t, of course, but you haven’t eaten.  So you agree to the counterfactual, starved and not caring.  “If there are five lights, we’ll treat you well (and if you don’t, they’ll torture you).”  There aren’t, of course, but you’re so tired, and the lights are so blurry…two plus two might equal five, mightn’t it?  Of course, it doesn’t, but does that matter when simply saying so will make the difference between captivity and freedom, between contentedness and suffering?

Consider the statement “trans women are women” again. This time, think about how this statement is actually used in online activism circles, rather than how people explain its definition when pressed.

When women refuse to toe the line on the trans mantra, they are harassed, threatened, guilt-tripped.  Women—many of them abuse or sexual assault survivors—are told that any statement contrary to “trans women are women” is not simply rude or even untrue, but actually violent, because it could cause transgender people to feel suicidal.

Interesting article

We Are All Winston Smith Now

http://culturallyboundgender.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/we-are-all-winston-smith-now/

Trans women are women.”

Among the most important themes explored in Orwell’s 1984 is that of language and its relation to oppression.

One of the most compelling moments in that book describes the protagonist, Winston Smith, realizing that the most valuable freedom of all is the freedom to tell the truth.

Later on, he is tortured for the thought he had—the idea that freedom means the ability to tell the truth, to be able to say that two plus two equals four.  His torturer, hired by the state to break his will, seizes upon this idea:

“Only the disciplined mind can see reality, Winston. You believe that reality is something objective, external, existing in its own right. You also believe that the nature of reality is self-evident. When  you delude yourself into thinking that you see something, you assume that everyone else sees the same thing as you. But I tell you, Winston, that reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else. Not in the individual mind, which can make mistakes, and in any case soon perishes: only in the mind of the Party, which is collective and immortal. Whatever the Party holds to be the truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party. That is the fact that you have got to relearn, Winston. It needs an act of self-destruction, an  effort of the will. You must humble yourself before you can become sane.’

He paused for a few moments, as though to allow what he had been saying to sink in.

‘Do you remember,’ he went on, ‘writing in your diary, “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four”?’

‘Yes,’ said Winston.

O’Brien held up his left hand, its back towards Winston, with the thumb hidden and the four fingers extended.

‘How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?’

‘Four.’

‘And if the party says that it is not four but five–then how many?’

‘Four.’

The word ended in a gasp of pain. The needle of the dial had shot up to fifty-five. The sweat had sprung out all over Winston’s body. The air tore into his lungs and issued again in deep groans which even by clenching his teeth he could not stop. O’Brien watched him, the four fingers still extended. He drew back the lever. This time the pain was only slightly eased.

‘How many fingers, Winston?’

‘Four.’

The needle went up to sixty.

‘How many fingers, Winston?’

‘Four! Four! What else can I say? Four!’

- 1984, George Orwell

It’s a powerful scene. So powerful, in fact, that at least two science fiction television shows have used the same concept.

In the Babylon 5 episode, Intersections in Real Time, a government torturer works to destroy Captain Sheridan’s sense of time, but more than that, to get him to agree that time—one of the most measurable, readily perceived concepts available to human consciousness—is malleable to the will.

INTERROGATOR: This is really excellent corned beef. You have to get just the right mustard. The brown with the seeds, not the yellow kind. And not too much of it. If there’s too much, it irritates the corners of my mouth.

Oh, would–would you like some? I know they haven’t fed you since you got here. That’s at least two days. Besides, it’s lunchtime. Isn’t it? Isn’t it lunchtime? You just said it was morning. Well, you can’t have a corned-beef sandwich for breakfast. It would upset your stomach. Corned-beef sandwiches are for lunch. If it’s morning, you can’t have it. If it’s lunchtime you can. Is it lunchtime?

SHERIDAN: I’m sure it’s lunchtime somewhere.

INTERROGATOR: Excellent answer. Here. I ate half of that myself. Killing you does nobody any good. I told you, I’m here to ensure your cooperation. And I can’t do that if you’re dead, now can I? It does prove, though, how everything is a matter of perspective. You think you see daylight, and you assume it’s morning take it away, you think it’s night. Offer you a sandwich, if it’s convenient, you’ll think it’s midday. The truth is fluid. The truth is  subjective. Out there, it doesn’t matter what time it is. In here, it’s lunchtime if you and I decide that it is. The truth is sometimes what you believe it to be and other times what you decide it to be. My task is to make you decide to believe differently. And when that happens the world will remake itself before your very eyes.

Thinking Outside the Gender Box

By Christine Benvenuto

Sheila Jeffreys, a professor of feminist politics at the University of Melbourne, offers an interesting and thought-provoking analysis of transgender issues in a new book, Gender Hurts (Routledge, 2014). Depending upon your point of view, her ideas may offend or may enter the discussion like a breath of fresh air. Reading the book, what I found myself wishing was that a discussion was really happening – that a free and open exchange of ideas and information on all the issues touched upon in this book was possible. That it isn’t – that there are those violently opposed to free speech for anyone who doesn’t agree with them in this arena – isn’t lost on Jeffreys.

The book traces the short history of the transgender rights movement, beginning with the word and concept of “gender” itself. Once upon a time offered as a replacement for “sex roles” by feminists who sought to free themselves from the narrow definitions of what men and women were and could be, Jeffreys points out the irony of how the concept of gender has been co-opted by those deeply invested in believing that gender, in all its social manifestations, is inborn – in the mind, that is, not the body. It was once progressive to realize that if if you didn’t fit the confines of the role you were born into, it was the role that needed to change. Now it’s progressive to think you need to change your body.

Unlike most who write about those who change gender, Jeffreys considers the effects of transformation on the people around them. Actually, on the women around them: Jeffreys points out that nearly all transgender people start as straight men involved with women, or as lesbians involved with women, so the fallout for their partners is pretty much a women-only club. The potential decimation of lesbian communities that could result from once-committed lesbians deciding that they are really men is of particular concern to Jeffreys. On an individual scale, she writes of personal devastation in the lives of lesbians whose partners decide to live as men, and expect the women who love them to shed their identities as lesbians and embrace heterosexuality on command. Similarly, she takes a look at some of the stories of women whose husbands decide they are women, mine included. I was interested to note that even among the wives who remain with their husbands post-transition, many of the issues and agonies are entirely familiar.

The most striking – and disturbing – aspects of the trans movement that Jeffreys covers are the role of the medical establishment in making gender change surgically, hormonally, cosmetically possible; and the not-unrelated subject of the transgendering of children, a hot topic in the past couple of years. While one of the key aims of the feminist movement was to get the medical establishment off our bodies, the trans movement embraces it – and as Jeffreys notes, there’s no question that the medical establishment is the big winner in gender transformation. She is especially alarmed by medicine’s increased and ever-earlier interventions in transforming the bodies of children. She is right to be. This is an issue we would do well to give careful, nuanced consideration – the kind of consideration that puts children, not politics, first.

@alright_then22 there are those in the lesbian community that would never date a transgender woman...there are places catering to lesbian women that don't necessarily allow transgender women in....there are these instances so frequently that the transgender women who have approached me feel the need to disclose that they were born 'other than female' and when i asked why they felt the need to tell me that the stories of their experience with other lesbians were horrible. so no, no war between the lesbian community and transgender women, but sometimes and often enough to matter, there have been skirmishes...and many radfem persons are terf minded...as are some lesbians.

i remember at planning meetings for gay pride parade in san francisco women not really wanting the 'trannies' in their group...and gay men feeling the same...altho it has been years since i've been involved in such things...it wasn't as long ago as the 80's.
