CORRECTED: Ann Coulter: Plumping Her Sales Figures?

By Sarah Ferguson, Thursday, Jun. 15 2006 @ 12:40PM
Comments (54)
Categories: Fact Check

Editor's note: This item has been corrected. Its orginal version reported that sales figures of Ann Coulter's latest book had been plumped through a campaign of giveaways by conservative groups. Those figures, as explained above, were not part of that tabulation that made her book a Nielsen BookScan best seller. (We also fixed the spelling of Nielsen BookScan.) The updated item follows:

Ann Coulter may have perfected the art of flogging liberals—and 9-11 widows—to flog her books.

But it looks like she's been getting a little help in the sales department.

Her new screed, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, is now reportedly the fastest selling non-fiction book in the country, with 48,408 copies sold in its debut week, according to the latest Nielsen BookScan figures.

No doubt a lot of that reflects the shitstorm of controversy she's kicked up by attacking those widows who dared challenge the official explanations for 9-11 as "harpies" who are somehow "enjoying their husbands' deaths."

But the marketing of this book by Random House's new conservative imprint, Crown Forum, appears to reflect the same sales-hyping tactics as Coulter's previous publisher Regnery, the right wing book mill that pioneered the art of using bulk buys from conservative and religious groups to plump out sales figures. [UPDATED 6.16.06: These giveaways are not included in figures by Nielsen BookScan.]

Though Godless retails for $27.95, you can get a FREE! copy if you subscribe to Human Events, the conservative weekly that publishes Coulter's weekly rants.

Human Events is a subsidiary of Eagle Publishing, which also owns Regnery (which put out Coulter's "bestselling" 2002 tirade to impeach Bill Clinton).

The Conservative Book Club is also offering free copies of Godless if you agree to buy two more of their "regularly discounted" titles over the next year.

And NewsMax is pitching a $4.99 Godless, if you sign up for a trial subscription to their monthly NewsMax Magazine (or you can get the book free if you pay for a yearly sub).

All of which puts a new spin on Coulter's accusations of media whoring.

In Godless, Coulter accuses the 9-11 widows—or "Witches of East Brunswick," as she calls them—of pimping their husbands' deaths for media attention and political gain:

"These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' death so much."

"These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9-11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them. The whole nation was wounded, all our lives reduced. But they believed the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony."

"And by the way, how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."

Yet Coulter doesn't seem to mind pimping herself to sell books. The cover of Godless features her in a neck-plunging, skin-tight dress, with a small cross dangling above her ample cleavage.

It's quite a pose for a book that goes on about how "godless" liberals are.

Meanwhile, in a column published Wednesday [entitled "Party of Rapist Proud to Be Godless"] Coulter has the gall to go after all those critics who've been whooped up into helping her sell her book:  "I'm getting a little fed up with people trying to make money off my book," Coulter complains. "Worthless little cable TV shows with teeny-tiny audiences, ridiculous legislators, and tabloid newspapers are all trying to make a name for themselves off the profundity of Godless."

Oops, maybe that's us.

But didn't the Bible say something about pride....?

It's so funny to me that your article fails to comment that it is the networks who invite Ms. Coulter on their shows. She is not oout pimping her book, you left wing nutjobs are doing it for her. You liberal squeal the loudest when your true selves are exposed. Keep yelling, you just prove her point.

Sarah, you're writing here as if this sort of marketing is different and devious when in fact everyone from Rush Limbaugh and Al Franken to Newt sell their books this way; by the way thanks to you and the rest of your "shitstormers" Ann sold another 12,000 copies today, and she should sell 2 million in the next three months. Go Ann, you go girl! Mazel tov!

Sarah, I agree with you that she appears on these shows wearing short dresses (actually the same black dress) trying to act sexy with her bony knees showing. Anyway she is an example of the vitreolic displays constantly shown by the "conservatives."

Have you read the book? The only quote your article contains is the same old same old.. And as far as the sales go... It is unfair for you assume only church groups and other conservative groups are buying it in bulk... obviously some liberal bought the book or how else would you have the one long quote to rant about... And I agree with Kevin above, she is being asked to go on these shows... When Bill Clinton put his book out I am sure you were thrilled with every appearance he made... Conservatives have to hear the liberal point of view every time they turn on the TV pick up a newspaper or sign on to a mainstream online news source... maybe its time liberals know how a majority of the country feels. You know middle America... And as far as the dress.. Don’t hate on Ann because she has a fantastic body and can wear the dresses people would cringe to see Mrs. Clinton in!

What is unGodly about wanting to sell your work product? Of course she is trying to sell more books, it is just a shame that people like you do not try to deconstruct her arguments, and instead mock and ridicule her physical appearance.

Did the Village Voice go after Al Franken and his books?

I find it amazing that people think Ann Coulter is a good christian, filled with love and tolerance, acceptance of others, following the lord of peace. Hell, I find it interesting that any right winger considers his/herself christian. Personally I think the GOP and modern "conservative" movement is fascist. I do not mean this as name calling, but a reality. Republicans seem to want a supreme executive that wields state power, detaining and spying on its own citizens. They want to fuse chursh and state, and fight global wars to "civilize" the world. Republicans want absolute power, and consider anyone who dissents from the government or their ideas to be treasonous, traitors. Republicans think they are the true patriots for they cover themselves in flag regalia. If this isnt a fascist movement, i wouldnt know what is!

Anybody else notice that she was wearing the black cocktail dress/plunging neckline/demure gold cross get up from the book's cover on both Leno last night and with Matt Lauer this morning? Does she think that if she doesn't wear the cover costume, people will forget who she is?

It was profoundly weird to see her in the same outfit both when I went to bed last night AND while eating my raisin bran this morning.

Ann Coulter needs a lesson in fashion! That same black dress is so overplayed, showing off those bony knees and her boat size shoes. Ann, why don't you take some of that money you're making and get a makeover. By the way, why is it okay for your nasty little ass to make millions from your mindless nonsense but the widows of 9-11 victims should not be allowed to profit? It will be a cold day in Hell (oops! Hades) before I buy your book. I could care less what you have to say because you are a non-entity; and a poorly coiffed one at that!

Jacks statement is a good reference point for my argument. Fascists utilize xemophobia (hatred/fear of outsiders (immigrants), homophobia (hatred/fear of homosexuals (marriage protection act), and jingoism (patriotic war hysteria) to get their rank and file roused to vote. This is exactly what Hitler did, scapegoating as many "out" groups as possible to induce a frenzy among the followers. I really do believe that a good case can presented that modern conservatism is indeed a fascist movement, the sooner we realize this, the sooner we can move to counteract it.

Ann Coulter is nothing more than an entertainer who gets far too much credit for being smart. It's really not any different than Jackie Mason or Lenny Bruce. The problem is that those on the right have confused attempts at humor with fact. To the person who wrote why don't liberals deconstruct her arguments . . .the truth is THEY HAVE. Once appeared on the today show, the response was overwhelming and quick . . not just in the blogosphere but in major publications.

For those of you who like her, that's certainly your right . . .but please, let's stop talking about Ann Coulter as though her word is gospel.

Remember, libs... the truth only hurts when you've been convicted by it. It seems that you "puppets" are so very frightened of standing up and being patriotic about this and other issues that you've gotten yourselves to the level of randomly desperate where you simply go against anything conservative for that fact alone and it's getting pretty obvious. It appears the minute this administration does yet another great action, we can count on you guys and your pathetic, unfruitful protests and rants to further embarass yourselves. Scott says:

Mrs. Coulter's moral superiority is on unstable ground. She can't not accuse other's of profitting off 9/11 as being immoral, because she herself has proffited more, and more publicly, than many others. If she was herself a good christian she would rather work towards a goal of unity and harmony. But she is a profiter and exploiter, and she has found many people to exploit on both the left and the right. So when you find yourself either being boistered, or dismayed by her comments wonder to yourself "I am being played by the lowest common denominator", because when you look at her and what she says it is very smart at all.

Frederico says:

Conservatives lie, christians hate? Must be another falsehood of the liberal media...My big white ass!
The "liberal media" is a set of buzz words used by the right wing in their program of doublespeak. No longer are journalists free to say what they really think on TV networks or in major newspapers for fear of the christian facists mounting yet another campaign of hate or their corporate sponsors pulling advertising. Or in the case of the New York Times or Washington Post, they actually aide the powers in charge by withholding news stories that may change election results. These are the acts of media working with a facist regime, not a free society.
Any bastion of liberalism on the network news is merely an illusion. Anyone who is a regular reader of the Village Voice knows that. Yet those who call themselves conservatives- and probably dont even know what THAT really means- continue to use these phrases and blindly follow their pharasee leaders.
Ann Coulter, the christian facist's venom spitting poster girl with bad hair (there's the personal dig for the facists who will make that accusation) along with Satan's Little Helper Condoleeza Rice, has made doublespeak an art form. Make your statement, give it a second go with a twist, and in the blonde's case, throw in some great button pushing phrases, and you have the new doctorine for christians to home school their little haters.
Anyone reading the New Testament can see that their christ was a socialist liberal! Can't they see that Pat Robertson, Bush, Cheney et al are the real Pharasees? Don't they home teach their little ones about Pharasee's and how they killed their christ? Pat Robertson would be the first one to plunge the spear into the man whose name he uses so freely. Ann Coulter would probably light up a Marlboro and dance in delight as yet another liberal bit the dust.....even if it was their messiah.

Godless says:

GODLESS title "hijacked" by Ann Coulter: Christian-right celebrity and author to release book on 6/6/6 which conflicts with established book by the same name. Atheist author Drew Stepek prepares for literary "Holy War."

Los Angeles, CA, May 16th, 2006

Author Drew Stepek, whose book entitled GODLESS has been registered with the Library of Congress since 2001 and who has owned the popular web destination www.godless.com since 2000, has just been informed that Ann Coulter will release a book with the title GODLESS on June 6th, 2006.

Although principle dissuades Drew Stepek from taking legal action against Coulter, he feels Coulter's book perverts and sucks the love out of religion and the open space of the Godless, which is free of prejudices and the burdens of myth. Stepek's book is about the death of God in our society and how it leads an individual down a path of self-destruction, whereas Coulter's book is a stab at the Democratic and Liberal society of the Godless.

"If I wrote a book called BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN for the purpose of promoting hatred of gay people," Stepek says citing the popular gay novel, "I think that it would represent a perverted violation of the original literary work."

Drew Stepek's GODLESS (ISBN# 0978602412) will be released as a second edition by ALPHAR publishing on June 6th, 2006, the same day as Coulter's GODLESS (ISBN# 1400054206) is being released by Crown Forum. Both books will be available in bookstores and online. Although an underground success in atheist and eating disorder communities, Stepek has never before officially released GODLESS to the mass public. For more information about Stepek's novel, look to www.godless.com.

ALPHAR will proceed with releasing Drew's important book despite Ms. Coulter's attempt to pervert and ride on Drew's patient career. "The power of an idea (or God) is revealed by its fruits," says Dr. Thomas Moore of ALPHAR. "We have been working productively with Drew. Stepek since early last winter, His purpose isn't politically or opportunistically motivated. He has been with the title GODLESS for a very long time."

I have read Ann's works. They are factual with footnotes. Ann makes it easy to confirm the truth of her work. That is why the lefties go ballistic. When Ann outs the lefties and exposes their game plan the leftist dominated TV/dead tree media feels the pain of a center mass hit with a large caliber weapon. The TV/dead tree media lost their monopoly when Rush hit the air in 1988. Then Albore invented the internet and the people now get all the news, not just the leftist slant. How dare Ann tell the public that Killian is lying to them?

PATRICK LONG says:

The whole quote is ridiculous. She writes "how do we know their husbands weren't planning on divorcing their wives. They better....hurry up and appear in Playboy." Hard to speculate on what was in their husbands minds, probably terror and agony at the time of their fiery murder, but if we stick to the facts, we do know a couple of important things: we know that these wives lost their husbands and their children lost their fathers. We also know that the US has killed more Iraqis than Saddam Hussein ever did. We know our great nation is bankrupt by the war. This war is nothing like WWII as Ms. Coulter posits: WWII united a country, this war has polarized it. WWII had a multi-national force of millions fighting evil, this war has a 99% US force fighting for the oil business interests. And it may be argued that oil is worth fighting for, but Bush's platform that we are bringing God's gift of democracy to oppressed people is a lie. If your average redneck American was driving down the road and saw an Afghani or an Iraqi on the sidewalk, he'd pull over and kick his ass. After 9/11, there were thousands of attacks against anybody who even looked Arabic. During the first Gulf War, the Iraqi's were cast as flag burning heathens, now they are the huddled masses, yearning to breathe free. If you are looking for huddled masses, lookno further than our cities here in the US. That $500 Billion that has been spent on the war could be used by Americans for Americans: infrastructure, healthcare, education, job training, and security.
And make no mistake, we are there for good. We have been in Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia. Afghanistan and dozens of others since the wars in those countries. Nobody has a sense of history. After WWI, they tried to force democracy on Europe and by the start of WWII, Italy, Germany, Poland had all gone communist or fascist. Name one instance where forced occupation has yielded a democracy. Great Britain and Rome tried it before and they went broke. I fear for our children. And I am a liberal, but I am not Godless at all....my spirituality is my highest priority. But, it's just not the god of the Bible. That God is impossible. And , Ann, put on some clothes...I've seen more clothes on Playboy bunnies. God doesn't like a floozy.

What Ann Coulter says is that liberals try to find spokespeople who have had tragedies that make them immune from criticism. In other words, you can't debate the issues with Sheehan or the 9-11 widows because they have suffered. If you disagree with their stance on Iraq, national security, etc. you're the bad guy. I disagree with Ms. Coulter's assessment that they are "enjoying" the death of their loved ones. However, I agree that liberals often adopt figureheads who they hope are infallible.

After several all night fact checking days the liberals came up dry so how do they attack Ann's book? With lies.

Ann's comments regarding the 9/11 widows are CLEARLY directed only at those four New Jersey women who have traveled the country attacking the president and holding him personally responcible for their husband's deaths. When you enter the political ring and attack the president of the US don't cry when people fight back. And isn't it interesting how the mainstream media isn't honest about this? They act as if her attack is directed toward all 9/11 widows? Why the lie?

Obviously it's because they can't find anything wrong with the book.

LOOKING FOR A WAY TO DEAL WITH OUTBREAKS OF COULTERGEIST ACTIVITY?

TRY THIS ...

Just stop talking about A** C******.

Really. Stop altogether.

The best way of dealing with the phenomenon is silence and dismissal.

Don't buy her books, don't read her work, don't review it, don't discuss it, don't discuss her. If you happen to be a professional member of the chattering classes, don’t appear with her on talk shows, don't engage her in debate, dialogue, arguments, faces-offs or whatever. And when the subject of A** C****** comes up - disregard it. If asked about her, ignore the question calmly; wait patiently for the next question on another subject. Pressed for an opinion, yield none. Charged with being “afraid to engage” the issue, smile and wait. The best public statement on A** C****** is DEAD AIR.

Make some.

Then, move on - and leave her ranting to her choir.

More even than on the cheers of her sad supporters, the creature lives for and feeds on the outrage of the easily-baited.

And no productive purpose is served by feeding its need for that attention.

Don't be so weak as to succumb to her provocations. You have better uses for your time and energy.

We all do.

MOVE ON.

And when others raise the question of what to do about A** C****** ... say, “nothing.”

Or ... just say nothing at all.

It amazes me that anyone with an IQ past 40 actually pays attention to Ann Coulter. She isn't a journalist. She isn't a social commentator. She isn't a Christian. She is a small minded, overhyped, crazed right wing fem-bot who likes nothing more than to hit every tactless punchline she can, because it sells her books and makes her money. To attack those women? That isn't bad taste, it's the absolute lack of a soul, and if there really is the fire and brimstone version of hell that she is so sure liberals are going to burn in, I hope she spends a long toasty time there. R LaBonte says:

The only 9 11 widows Coulter criticizes are those who traded on their widowhood. Her point is that they were used by the liberal media because of their invulnerability - a trick that liberals discovered when Viet Nam Vets criticized the war and were immune from the name calling tactics that rednecks used against hippies in 1969. And of course Coulter uses provocative statements to bait liberals into proving her point - a point not one liberal responded to, instead excoriating her for being mean to all 9-11 widows, which of course is a lie. It's too delicious when you see how stupid Hillary Clinton really is to fall for Coulter's bait - and she's supposed to be the smartest thing the liberals can come up with?

I find it distressing that we as a society have collectively failed to produce an Ann Coulter sex tape. If we can't do that, then what's the point of having an Internet anyway? Let's get to work here, people.

This article merely illustrates Coulter's recent description of liberals being quite good and screeching names but no abilitiy whatsoever in arguing. Don't tell me about the marketing of the book. Can't you argue with her thesis in GODLESS at all? Doesn't that confirm that she's right?

I read the article yesterday and thought about it all night. My thoughts kept me up last night.
Yes, its amazing to me to see just how large and intricate the Empire really is. Ann Coulter as a cultural icon is an image and commodity that is constructed by the Empire that she represents. Look how large it is. Its not a surprise that she would be on top. She is a woman that speaks and validates the man!
For a young woman like me, I sometimes feel so overwhelmed and alone in my commitment to justice and good literature. I'm a grad student in the Dept of American Studies. I would like to pursue a career as a writer in the future.

When I woke up this morning, I woke up with a conviction. I want to encourage myself and all others like me to keep fighting against the machine. YEs, our journeys are the paths least taken because there are no sugar daddies that want to crown our dissent, but this is already something we know and this is exactly what guides us.

This discussion here saddens me. It saddens me to see how divisive and childish political discourse has become in this country. Is Coulter a cause or a symptom of this? I'm not sure, but in any case she's not to be encouraged.
Who exactly are "the liberals?" When And who are "the conservatives?" Why has this tribalism taken the place of rational discussion? If we ever really had rational discussion in the first place, and I'm beginning to think less and less that we actually did.
It's worth working toward, though. As such, people like Coulter ought to be ignored by people of all political stripes, since she only contributes to the name-calling that passes for political discourse. Like an internet troll, she wants any kind of attention, so the best thing to do is not give it to her.
Do you want to be right or do you want truth? From what I can see, there are a lot of people on this page who want to be right. Truth is harder and requires humility. Who's looking for truth here?

When are we going to give the whole "liberal media" argument a rest? Ann Coulter and the other talking head right iwing hate mongering folks have beaten what is now a dead horse to daeath. Here's a fact: There is NO liberal media! Unless I'm living in a time warp, Fox News is the number one news source these days, and they ain't liberal. The number of right wing "conservative" talk show hosts Far outweighs any left or liberal commentators. And, last time I checked, the Reublicans control the White House, Congress and the Courts. So...there is nothing lieberal at all.

And, just as a side note. To the person who posted the opinion that journalism should be "balanced", you obviously never went to school for it. First rule of thumb, which Fox has done a good job of distorting, is that journalism is supposed to be impartial - to report the news as it happens.

dronebee says:

When she's not outright lying, she's getting her facts wrong. She never met a cliche she didn't like. I always change the channel if I see her on TV, because even though she's easy on the eyes, so is any other woman they put on TV, and almost any of them, including the cast of Baywatch, are more intelligent and interesting than she is.

As for being a Christian, I wonder what she would write about a 30-year-old man who wandered the countryside, spending all his time with poor fishermen and tax collecters, calling the rulers to repentance, demanding that people forgive all debtors and telling the rich to give all their possessions away and follow him. I guess she'd probably call him "Godless" and be the first one to cheer his execution. And after that, she'd probably taunt his grieving mother to boot.

I will agree with the "conservatives" on one thing though. The "liberals" have done a great job of helping her promote herself. Sort of like how the best marketing strategy for any filmmaker who wants to sell a lot of tickets to a mediocre-to-bad movie (DaVinci Code, Last Temptation) is to offend the Catholic church.

Matt in NYC says:

It's such a disheartening shame to hear all the reductionist drivel that continues to be spouted in relation to these politics, personal or otherwise. I agree somewhat with he fascist bent of some of the more influential people in this country, but also have to stipulate that in this day and age there is absolutely no truth in simplicities like "liberal" or "conservative." And until we can recognize and give credit to the complex spectrum around any issue that impacts us and our world, train our minds to hold more than three concepts for more than a minute, we're doomed to endlessly repeat the same concoctions over and over again. That is, until we kill ourselves by use of these same reductionist beliefs.
It seems funny (and sad) to me how the use of the word "activist" is used only by a select few, to denote activities which go against the agenda of severly warped and limited ideologies. But there is no such "catchy" correlate to describe actively trying to loosen pollution standards or tax burdens for large corporations, or thwarting near unanimous UN resolutions for the good of a select few. It's the intellectual equivalent of shooting one's self in the foot. And until enough people in this country can recognize the lack of brain capacity that's being applied to these issues. I'm afraid there's not much hope left for humanity. We may stuble along indefinitely, but the quality of the discourse in this country, for those who are intelligent enough to discern it's real problems, will forever dwindle. I thought the Neanderthals died out a long time ago?

Lynn says:

Who would be jealous of a woman who's clearly never had an orgasm?

I think what the fire breathing neo-cons are failing to understand is that that have been used as pawns, albeiit VERY effective pawns in the agenda of the Bush Administration. This phenomenon of hatred for the portion of America who simply doesn't share their perspective IS NOT A NATRUAL OCCURANCE. It is the result of a carpet-bomb, shock and awe political campagne to establish a bone-chillingly inhospitable environment for people who don't subscribe to a certain political point of view. I tend to beleive that such extreme tactics are rooted in something far more sinister than traditional aims for political advantage. The envormment of hatred is too raw and way over blown. If your political concerns are rooted as deeply in hatred as the Ann Coulterists /Fox News crowd appears, I seriously doubt if the God I pray to is on board with it. You guys are rabid dogs at this point. Let go of the hate and start being human beings again.

Lynn says:

Neo-CONS, stop it. Everything you stand for is rooted in pure hate. This is an unprecidented condition in this country and it flies in the face of everything this country was built upon. The Founding Fathers, (who I fear are on the verge of being condemned as Libral Whack-Jobs) were heavily concerned about creating a safe scene for divergent thought and opposing view points. This concern was deeply woven into the fabric of this Nation, the very nation you have been duped into believing you love more than anyone else. There is no place for love when this degree of hatred has blackend your heart. For you to have been trained like pavlovian puppies to strike with such fury at simple politically diverse philosophies is a glaringly obvious indication of Orwellian brainwash, I shudder to think what purpose it will ultimately serve those truly responsible for it. I'm starting to believe that the vast majority of you are just about where the Germans were when the holocost started: Secretly applauding the efforts to destroy millions of people after a vicious campagne of hate mongering propaganda.

Nonny says:

GS points out that the Jersey Girls so viciously attacked by Coulter were "LIBERAL ACTIVISTS," as if that justifies Coulter's venom and savagery, and then goes on to assert that we should get the story straight.

This is particularly ironic as GS doesn't seem to know anything more about the Jersey Girls than what the rightwing bloggers have taught him (her?).

Two of the Jersey Girls were Democrats, to be sure, but the other two had voted for none other than George W. Bush in 2000. They were not trying to profit from their husbands' deaths, but to force a reluctant administration to examine what went wrong in our intelligence community and the White House that left the door wide open for these terrible attacks.

That they have gained notoriety and a measure of fame in subsequent years was something none could have foreseen when they went on their crusade for the truth, and is as much a result of the brutal right-wing denunciations of them as anything else.

It is so typical of the modern Neoconservative movement that, the minute anybody exposes unpleasant truths about this administration, they are immediately subjected to a personal savaging and abusive scorched-earth campaign of denunciation and derision, in a mean-spirited attempt to discredit them.

Whence comes this fulminating bile and unbridled hatred on the Right? What is so enraging and threatening about dissent or disagreement? Why do so many on the Right view the world as an apocalyptic battle between themselves, as crusaders for Truth, Justice, and the American Way, and some monstrous, malevolent conspiracy plotting to destroy all that is good and pure and replace it with some nameless evil?

Were an individual to view the world that way, we would diagnose him as a paranoid schizophrenic. Can an entire political movement be clinically insane? I'm beginning to think so.

Nonny says:

bobart,

I agree that it is unconscionable to wish that Bush and Company had been at the WTC. But, it is equally unconscionable for Ann Coulter to have said that the only thing she regrets in the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people (including 19 children) was that Timothy McVeigh didn't target the New York Times building instead.

It is the alpha and omega of hypocracy to denounce in your opponents what you celebrate among your allies. The Right has set the bar on hatred and sheer meanspiritedness so low that they have voided any claim of moral superiority when they find themselves reaping what they have sown.

I would wager a fairish sum, that if offended liberals quit buying Ann Coulter's books, individual sales would drop off to nothing.

And yes, more of them are given away or sold at hugely cut rates than are ever sold at retail prices. There is a fund maintained for that purpose, though I forget the name of it now. It has the purpose of promoting conservative writings, and pays the difference on many of these giveaways.
