TABLOIDED: The Death of Heath Ledger

Posted by Tab Hunter at 10:45 AM, January 23, 2008

When the news of Heath Ledger’s drug overdose death broke yesterday afternoon, my thoughts quickly turned to, “How are the tabs going to cover this?” There were two ways it could go: mournful and tragic or lurid and lascivious. Both angles were covered in the papers this morning. This is going to be an interesting story to watch unfold because it has so many tabloid-worthy aspects: celebrity, drugs, a local angle and a life cut short. The Post had nine writers on the story; the Daily News had 15.

The Post chose a generic “DEATH IN SOHO” banner headline with a 2006 picture of Ledger and ex-fiancée Michelle Williams and a generic subhead noting “Heath Ledger ODs on pills.” The News, meanwhile, went the more sensationalist route, including an inset photo of the star’s body as it was wheeled out of the Soho apartment building and noting that Ledger was nude when he was found. (The main photo is a promo shot from Brokeback Mountain, the film that cemented Ledger’s career as a serious actor.) The Post waited until page 2 to divulge that detail. Of course, the paper still needs to shock, so it classes up its coverage with some photos of Ledger hanging from a noose, which were from a film the star was working on in London. It brought to mind the front page of the tabloid from when Kurt Cobain shot himself, which featured a promo photo of the Nirvana frontman with a gun in his mouth.

Film scholar Richard Dyer argues in his 1986 book Heavenly Bodies: Film Stars and Society that one way in which stars appeal to us is through the concept of “really:” what celebrities are like in their private lives. Think of any of those “Stars, they’re just like us” paparazzi photos you see in the tabloids of Jessica Alba pumping gas or Reese Witherspoon grocery shopping. The irony of this striving to find the “authentic” person behind the celebrity is that it often plays out in the public eye and is just a media construction.

Both the Post and the Daily News have perfect examples of this phenomenon with articles on how Ledger lived a quiet, idyllic life in Brooklyn with Williams and their daughter Matilda. Both of these stories are peppered with quotes from people who work at various Boerum Hill establishments that Ledger frequented. The sources talk about how down-to-earth and gentlemanly the actor was. But Ledger hadn’t been living in Brooklyn the past few months, so these tributes still contributed to a paradoxical public image as a private person and a general “low-key” myth about the actor. The “low-key Brooklyn existence” will be a constant in the narrative of Ledger’s life and death, despite the fact he perished in his home in Manhattan.

In terms of sheer information, the Post wins out. Their coverage was complete with identifying and featuring photos of the maid and masseuse who found the actor unconscious and dialed 911. The caption under the picture of Theresa Solomon and Diane Lee is thoroughly inappropriate, declaring the women “leading ladies.”

Lurid and inappropriate isn’t just for celebrities; in today’s papers, hockey moms and police officers are sensationalized as well. The Post claims an “exclusive” on a female informant who alleges that Brooklyn narcotics officer Jerry Bowens slept with her. However, the Daily News also has the story (as they “exclusively” did yesterday); the Post has an interview with the informant.

Both tabs also examine the case of Beth Modica, a Rockland County hockey mom accused of having sex with some of her son’s underage friends and hosting booze and pot parties. Modica was indicted on 35 counts, including statutory rape, sex abuse and endangering children. The irony of this story is that Modica is the wife of the Spring Valley police chief. The News stuck with the AP’s coverage of the story, but the Post had two reporters working it.

Odds and Ends
Andrea Peyser continues to squeeze the “Weekend at Bernie’s” story for column fodder as she covers the burial of Virgilio Cintron.

The Post seems to think that the Patriots now are known as the *s. Yes, it’s clever to put an asterisks in the stats, but at least name the team in your coverage. You’d think we were reading the Boston Herald with all the Tom Brady coverage they’ve got in the paper today.

Finally, we need a “happy” story to balance out today’s death and scandal. The Daily News brings us the story of Gracie Mae, a 10-month-old tabby cat from Florida who stowed away in her owner’s luggage and wound up on a flight to Dallas. Despite the subzero temperatures in the cargo hold and going home with the wrong person (a stranger mistakenly grabbed the suitcase at baggage claim), Gracie Mae survived.

If it should be confirmed that Mr. Ledger od'd allow me to be the first to say i am so sick and tired and bored with celebrities and their addictions. We didn't lose a gifted actor. We lost a flawed character. Exactly how much attention does one person need???

Posted by: BitchyBetty at January 23, 2008 12:13 PM

Bitchy Betty,

Maybe you should keep your JUDGEMENTS to yourself until you know the facts. The media prints ugly specualtion purely for people like you. Have some respect for his poor family. Half the globe has sleeping tablets in the vicinity of their beds. We don't assume they are all drug addicts. His parents did confirm he had pneumonia at the time of his death. This can be a fatal condition in itself. If you don't feel you are getting enough attention, you should become a movie star too.

Posted by: Liz from Australia at January 23, 2008 12:38 PM

Liz, I agree with you completely. There are so many rumors and speculations going around that everyone and their mom has a different version of the story. The autopsy hasn't even revealed anything substantive, but the world is ready to condemn a man who has never once been linked to any form of addiction or drug problem to ODing on x amount of pills and suicide.

Attention is given here because he was young and because his death was so unexpected and almost surreal. It's the result of bewilderment - so Betty, save your generalizations for a different case and a different story. They are misplaced here - and frankly quite tactless.

i agree with Liz from Australia, the man was an awsome actor and deserves respect, even if it does turn out it was deliberate for someone to do that to them selfs would have to have some issues, so show some damn respect!

He was a great actor!and he was soo cute!I loved all his movies and him too!
We will never forget you!!!

How very sad. Our culture hungers for and creates instant celebrities. While the tabloids feed like vampires on what's left of Britney (why do we care, she's a non-talented fool who should really just shut up and go hide somewhere!). .. However, someone like Heath Ledger was a very gifted artist, a very talented and diverse actor. What might have been in terms of his future, and his ongoing positive contributions to the culture truly make this a tragedy. Who knows what he may have been dealing with in his own life, and that we may truly never know. But, to die like this, so young, and so truly talented, it is just so very, very sad. I thought his work in Brokeback Mountain was incredibly powerful, and watching his character on screen in that role truly broke my heart. This is film acting at its pinnacle.

I'm shocked and saddened, and, yes, the media will fed on it till Britney falls down the stairs or something, but, my thoughts are with his family and friends, and all his fans out there who recognized what a sensitive, gifted performer he was. This is a true loss (no matter what the circumstances), and he will be truly missed.

Posted by: David from Toronto at January 23, 2008 1:38 PM

Bitchy Betty,

Wow, thats pretty interesting. First and foremost we lost a human being who was a gifted actor.

All people are flawed characters and really what funny is ignorant people such as yourself pass JUDGEMENT on celebrities because those are the people we see in papers, movies, and on the internet.

The reality is that there are far more addicts or "flawed characters" as you so ignorantly put it out in the world who are you childrens teachers, bus drivers, doctors, nurses, CEO's, VP's....you name it.

Secondly, we dont know why he died and for you to assume anything is again....IGNORANT.

Based on what you've shown us, it seems that you have some serious character flaws that are far more dangerous than a drug addiction or pneumonia....ingorance,judemental,and being bitchy.

All that gathered from a short unintelligent blurb you made on the internet. Can you imagine if any of us actually had to deal with you on any real life basis? It would be painful to know you.

So why don't you you save everyone the eye strain and Google "ignorant judgmental", I'm sure you can find some reading material that will point you to some like minded organizations or people.

Enjoy your existence.

Posted by: Lyman at January 23, 2008 1:39 PM

First of all Liz, if you're going to accuse me of poor judgment - please spell it properly. Secondly if you had read my opening line I state IF IT SHOULD BE CONFIRMED... that's hardly judgmental. So to you and the remaining bloggers that are ready to crucify me, big deal - he's not one of the greats. He was a one-hit wonder and now that he's gone that comment cannot be disputed.

Posted by: BitchyBetty at January 23, 2008 1:53 PM

I'm with Bitchy Betty here. Heath was a good actor, I'll give him that. But it seems that he's being cannonized for what?

Posted by: ginger at January 23, 2008 1:56 PM

BitchyBetty,

You're wrong, actually that can be disputed because that your OPINION. Once again ignorance shows itself again.

Secondly just because you put a line of "Should it be confirmed" doesn't mean your not being judgmental. It just means your judgment will go one way or another depending what the findings are.

None of us want to crucify you in particular but really what it has to do with is the fact we have an intolerance to ignorant, judgmental, mightier than thou people, such as yourself.

Broken down even further in this case, we have an intolerance for people who judge other for there problems.

Really what it shows is a lack of respect for human beings in general because whether he was "a great" or a "one hit wonder" he was still a god damn person and all else is irrelevant because untimely deaths are tragic.

Whether you liked him or not the fact is he affected people lives in a positive way if not by entertaining them in movies but I'm sure also being inspiration to people who wanted to actors and I'm sure in other way for people who knew him.

His little girl will never have her father and that is f'ing sad.

Maybe try thinking about him as a HUMAN BEING as opposed to " eh well, he was no Al Pacino".

Maybe you should try affecting people positively because you never know who's looking at you.

Chew on that for a while.

PS: Its not fricken cool or acceptable to be bitchy....its not a trait or something be proud of.

Posted by: Lyman at January 23, 2008 2:12 PM

PS: You are not Mavis Beacon so try making a valid point instead of insulting someone for a typo or mis-spelling.

Further evidence of you being a judgmental waste.

Posted by: Lyman at January 23, 2008 2:13 PM

Why is it that you're all getting your knickers in a knot over Heath Ledger and a bitchy blogger when there are "real life issues" like the candidates for presidency, our country going into a recession, etc. Our country is at war. Why is the death of a celebrity, sure it's sad, but why not put your energies into something more concrete and something that actually REALLY MATTERS?

Posted by: Just Wondering at January 23, 2008 2:36 PM

I agree 100% with both Liz and Julia.Heath was a beautiful and bright young star whose life was cut way too short. My heart goes out to his family, friends, loved ones, and co-workers.He will be missed as much for the wonderful acting as his beautiful smile.RIP Heath knowing you are loved and missed.

Posted by: Tonia at January 23, 2008 2:39 PM

Forgive me - I hadn't realized you had a close personal relationship with Mr. Ledger. For my comments to tug at your heart strings so profoundly I find to be a curious thing. I never said it wasn't sad. It might be. However, compared to the loss of lives in Iraq, world hunger, nuclear war, cancer, etc I just don't find this to be a reason to cry, ponder or waste valuable time thinking about it any more than I did. You attacking me doesn't make you non-judgmental by the way. It just makes you fanatical about celebrity pin-ups. And by the way, Mavis Beacon was a friend of the family.

Posted by: BitchyBetty at January 23, 2008 2:42 PM

Just Wondering should change his/her name to Good Head on Shoulders. All these people carrying on about the death of an actor!

Posted by: agnes at January 23, 2008 2:45 PM

Bitchy Betty,

I am hardly fanatical about celebrities, regardless of who they are.

My point is ANY death is tragic regardless of notoriety but when people such as yourself see a CELEBRITY that dies of a suicide or drugs or any number of vices that afflict people of all social standings, races, religions and creeds; there tends to be this hasty assumption they are a loser or somehow lower on the human totem pole.

The fact is his death is just as tragic as any death. I mean, what about soldiers during Vietnam that came back with Heroin addictions? Many of them OD'd and died later on in life because they couldn't beat it. Many of them committed suicide.

Does that make them a loser or a "flawed character"? What it does make them is a product of there environment and they were unhappy.

Sure, there are plenty of people who never went down those routes but you never know whats going on with someone or what something means to this person compared to that one.

Sure, i am being judgmental but there is a certain required level of judgment needed in life. The difference is good judgment or bad judgment.

I'm saying you need to maybe think about overlooking the way someone dies or there personal habits to see that no matter what atrocity they have committed, or addiction they have that when you strip that all away it is a human being who was unhappy in there life and in there own skin. Everyone deserves to be happy.

Are the actions of miserable people always the BEST choice, of course not.

They are just doing there best to deal.

Posted by: Lyman at January 23, 2008 3:11 PM

I think it very, very sad that Heath Ledger died so young. I find it strange that he used such a dangerous sleeping pill as Ambien and why that pill is still on the US market since it causes people to do strange things and then wake up and not remember that they did them.
I presume from what I've read that Ledger was close to a complete physical breakdown and those drugs helped it on.
Especially with pneumonia which in
itself can lead to heart failure, he was working on a stressful film and had a lot of sadness and stress in his private life.
Poor Heath. So sad.
To Bitchy Betty I'd just like to say, if you don't actually ACT yourself you haven't a clue about how tough it is and how much pressure a person is under, so maybe in future you'd be better off keeping your mouth SHUT TIGHT.

Bitchy Betty...just wondering if "liar" counts as a "character flaw".

Ask William Macklin of the Philadelphia Inquirer, November 9, 1995:

The character of "Mavis Beacon" is not a real person, but rather a fictional character created to bring a personal touch to the tutorial. The original photo of Mavis Beacon was of a bankteller in Sherman Oaks, California, the city in which Software Toolworks, the original publisher, had its offices. Former TV talkshow host Les Crane, who was then a partner in Software Toolworks, invented the name. Her first name is meant to evoke the concept of a maven. Her last name represents her role as a light to guide your way.

Posted by: Kelly Green at January 23, 2008 3:52 PM

Lyman - I don't want to spend the rest of the week battling with you but come on - EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE HAPPY?!?!? What kind of a Pollyanna existence are you living??? And to Kelly Green - I'm a liar, I'm flawed...no, I'm just bitchy.
I won't be writing again. It's like ramming my head into a wall. I'm not preachy, I'm not prayerful, I'm not judgmental, I'm not into pop culture, I'm not stuck between a rock and a hard place... I'm disgusted, and bored and as a result - bitchy. Farewell bloggers.

Posted by: BitchyBetty at January 23, 2008 4:02 PM

Some thoughts on this discussion,

Yes Betty, you are a bitch, and you're missing the whole point. Also Mr Ledger was known to be sober, polite and well-mannered, and not at all a party animal. I can tell you this as a Brooklynite. He was in good spirits, according to his father, happy to be working on a film with Terry Gilliam. He had a massage appointment, which doesn't sound like someone who was planning suicide, and he loved his young daughter, Matilde Rose immensely. If he were, however, a tortured soul, your comments would still be crass at best, and mean-spiriited; or should I say bitchy.

My blog usually contains nothing but election politics, blurbs on fighting war, racism and poverty, and other important issues. My latest post was about Mr Ledger's untimely death because he touched me, and hundreds of people whom I've met online, in a very profound way through his work. Film is culture and "Brokeback Mountain" is a timeles classic. His portrayal of Ennis del Mar, in "Brokeback Mountain" was actually life-changing for many. There are a few forums which are still very active about this film. Besides its univeral appeal as a romance and as a study of regional sub-cultures in the American West, it was a narrative that explored homophobia in a way never before seen on film, to my knowledge. I know that Ang Lee's work, along with Jake Gyllenhal and the rest of the staff, has touched me in a very deep and personal way. The Ennis character was central to this film, and Mr Ledger's sensitivity and the passion with which he approached his craft is both commendable and an important part of the cinematic art form.

Did you take a break from solving the "real problems" of the world just to be a heartless bitch?

Posted by: Michael at January 23, 2008 4:02 PM

Posted by: InternetRanger at January 23, 2008 4:03 PM

Too funny. If not so pathetic.

Posted by: Kelly Green at January 23, 2008 4:07 PM

Regardless of anyone's opinion (and it's interesting to see freedom of expression portrayed here so heavily), a young life is gone. Whether it is by way of an overdose, the war in Iraq, or a tragic accident, I think that the loss of this young life should be taken into consideration and have our hearts and thoughts be toward the family who has this burden to carry.

May Heath rest in peace and his family find comfort in knowing that Heath's time on this earth, albeit short, made a difference to those who knew him and to those who appreciated his art.

May the media and the hateful individuals find some sort of compassion in their isolated souls.

Posted by: suzette at January 23, 2008 4:10 PM

Ledger's death while sad, is also boring at the same time. When I initially heard that he had been depressed, the first question in my mind was-about what? Was he depressed that he left his wife and child? Was it that he chose the wrong movie? Was it that he was forced out of his dream house in Perth? These types of people have no clue or have lost touch with the everyday. They live in a fantasy land where every whim is fed and every pain is a heart attack. Sad yes, tragic no. I enjoyed most of his films, and thought he was one of the better actors of his generation.

Pollyanna existence? I don't think saying everyone deserves to be happy is unreasonable. Weather or not they are or will be or can be....thats another ball of wax entirely.

I guess that sort of comment be expected from someone who is a bitch. IE: miserable.

Shal we toss that up there with insane ideas of "everyone deserves to be free" and "everyone deserves equal right".

I can now see why the picture of a bank teller on a software box was your friend....

We could only hope for you to ram your head into a wall because it may shake some of the sawdust back into place.

Its obvious she will never see bigger point that is being said by many of you.

Cross your fingers she doesn't breed.

UHmmmmm a persons death isn't supposed to be entertaining.

Any boredom found in this is due to a serious lack of appreciation for life, IMO

James C.

Depression isn't something you choose. Its a chemical illness just as diabetes is. Would you say about a diabetic, "Well, just stop avoiding sugar. There are so many good things about sugar!" You can't just "snap out of it".

"These types" of people are in your own family, I guarantee it. And in your everyday life. The CEO, the school teacher, the doctor, the professional athlete, the guy next door. "These types" are brilliant and artistic and exceptional. Being depressed is not a "character flaw".

Posted by: Kelly Green at January 23, 2008 4:33 PM

To: The Lovely Bitchy Betty

this is literally the first time i have ever blogged.
i was just so annoyed with your negativity i just had to purge my thoughts.

bitchy betty you need to get a life and quit spewing your hate, i think you need to not center your life around being such a bitch on blog sites. your opinion obviously only upsets people so give it a rest.

when any human dies (and yes that does mean any human being including people who's face you see in movies and on magazines) you give respect or keep your mouth shut that is how human decency works.

so if you cant keep your mouth shut go tell a friend or something don't get online and share your negative mind with all these people who obviously don't care to hear your "bitchy" opinion.

when death comes to anyone no one wants to hear negative thoughts. people want to think of the best of the people who are no longer with us.

you just have to keep in mind being on the internet spouting off you opinions like that may make you feel better, but if someone who did know him or is related to him reads your ignorant thoughs it might crush their soul just a little bit more that is already is from loosing their father, brother, cousin, son, best friend, lover, baby boy....or any other character heath may have been to someone.

you just need to gain some sympathy and compassion for your fellow man. at least while you are draining your thoughts online.

thanks for your time betty.

p.s. do me a favor and just absorb this i won't be checking this to see if you write me back bashing my grammar or something.

much love, Kaya's momma

Heath was a beautiful man on the outside and most likely much more beautiful on the inside.

To see a man love their child as i'm sure he did could stop time.

The part that makes me cry is a baby girl who will never really know her father.

At least there are tons of pictures of him with her all over the web for her to relate to when she gets to that age.

My heart goes out to Michelle...i know how you must feel i almost lost the father of my daughter last April.

And to all the family and friends who loved Heath all the love my heart and soul can give is yours.

I think for heath getting caught up in the hollywood 'fishbowl' is what ended him. This man was on a path of self destruction, just look at river phoenix he ended up the same way.I have seen many of heaths films and yes he was a good actor and was particularly handsome too.But I think this fame game thing is'nt all its cracked up to be.Heath often said that he did'nt like to be interviewed or have the personal intrusion that he had which I know if it were me I would feel the same, but thats what comes with being a high profile, pin up celebrity these days so my opinion is if you cant take the heat...stay out of the kitchen!!! in other words don't become an actor simple!

well I can tell that this Bitchy Betty got all the atention she was looking for...I was just looking around for some pictures and informations about Heath Ledger, after watching ,again,my favourite movie,Lords of Dogtown....I cryed myself out at the final song from Pink Floyd "Wish you were here"...Well,even if at a continent away from the place Heath used to live, even if I never met him or saw him,I was so sad to hear about his dead...I fell in love with him, when I saw "Brother Grimm"...he was so great, such a talent...and one day,as I was sitting in my bad,I was watching the news, and suddenly I was thinking about him,of watching a movie with him,and then BANG...THE FAMOUS JOUNG ACTOR HEATH LEDGER WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS APPARTMENT...!!!!!!i was shocked:((so sad that i started crying....well if i cryed for him,and after a few monts,i still cry...what about his family, and what about his wonderful daughter:((so sad to hear people talk stupid about others....
I will always love Heath Ledger and never forget him:)
