Campaign 2008

The Revolt of the Superdelegates?

By John DeSio, Thursday, Feb. 7 2008 @ 12:46PM

Categories: Campaign 2008

Barack Obama’s is locked in a virtual tie for convention delegates with slim delegate lead over Hillary Clinton, but Democratic Party rules could still shut him out of the presidential nomination despite his strong performance in the primaries.

At issue are so-called “superdelegates,” former and current elected officials and other Democratic power-players who are appointed as delegates to the party’s national convention and can choose their preferred candidate with no regard for how their state has voted. New York’s superdelegates include, among others, former President Bill Clinton, United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and every Democratic member of the State’s congressional delegation.

Within the primary voting system Obama has put together a small lead over Clinton, with 635 delegates compared to her 630, according to CNN, though other counts vary. But Clinton has maintained a strong majority of those superdelegates that have made their official pledge, and leads Obama 783-709 when those numbers are factored in (other superdelegate counts give Clinton a larger lead.)

Obama is well aware of the disparity and has sent a message to the Democratic establishment on those superdelegates, stating that they "would have to think long and hard about how they approach the nomination when the people they claim to represent have said, 'Obama's our guy.'" Obama’s message is clear: do not subvert the will of the people.

The superdelegate system used by the Democrats was put into effect during the 1970’s, as a means for party officials to maintain their influence in the face of reforms that arose from the 1972 presidential campaign of former senator and liberal stalwart George McGovern, said Tom De Luca ,a professor of political science at Fordham University.

The superdelegates are bound to nothing but their own opinions, said De Luca, and make up a strong 20 percent of the total Democratic delegate count of 4,049. Should Clinton’s lead among superdelegates vault her to the nomination, despite her defeat to Obama at the hands of the people, it could mean trouble for Democrats in November.

“I think it would be very, very bad for the Democrats,” said De Luca. “It might really demobilize some of the Obama constituency in the November election, which could well be very close.”

Harlem State Senator Bill Perkins was the first New York elected official to forsake his hometown senator and endorse Obama’s campaign, and he too is concerned that the will of the people could be cast aside at the convention, all in the name of party politics. Obama’s campaign is one of hope, said Perkins, and those hopes could be dashed by the superdelegate system, shutting Obama out of his rightful nomination “not on the basis of merit.”

“When you see a situation that has the potential to reverse that, by virtue of some sort of undemocratic, backroom machinations, it would be shameful,” said Perkins. “Worse than that, the agenda for change that everybody is singing now thanks to Obama would have a sour note.”

As a check on potential disaster the superdelegate system does have its purpose, said De Luca. It gives party insiders the ability to control a maverick candidate, preventing him or her from seizing the nomination and doing potential harm to the party in November. But while Obama might not fit the preconceived notion of a Democratic insider he is certainly no radical, and a potential defeat engineered by backroom party politics would leave a bad taste in the collective mouths of his energized supporters.

“Obama’s an outsider in a sense, but he’s not Dennis Kucinich,” said De Luca. “I’m not going to say it would be devastating, but I think that would have a very bad impact on Clinton’s ability to mobilize Obama’s supporters in the general election.”

Both De Luca and Perkins agreed that, should Obama lose the nomination only because he lacks a majority of superdelegates, it would put a lot of pressure on the Democratic Party to eliminate the superdelegate system in its entirety. De Luca did see several ways out for the Democrats, noting first that more than half of the superdelegates have not yet committed to any particular candidate, giving them time to gauge Obama and Clinton’s momentum and make a decision based on that, giving Obama a chance to minimize Clinton’s superdelegate lead.

De Luca also pointed out that while it might sting a bit, a Clinton victory propelled by a superdelegate majority will not be crippling to the party is Obama’s delegate lead is only a handful of votes, as it stands today. If Obama had a large delegate lead and was pushed out by superdelegates, it would cause a figurative riot at the convention, said De Luca.

“It would be a bad blow for the party,” said De Luca, “and a lot of the people who got involved because of the Obama campaign would be very bitter about it.”

Perkins certainly would be. “We can’t have a democracy that people don’t have faith in, particularly in terms of our party processes,” he said.

I am a strong Obama supporter and I am becoming more and more concerned that the Democrats across this country will not be the deciding factor in who wins the nomination. I am further concerned by the fact that the DEM party, nationwide, has supported Hillary Clinton since early in 2007. Most of the super delegates who committed to Clinton did so a very long time ago. Obama has been able to bring voters to register as Democrats; his policies differ little from Hillary Clinton; he has a squeaky clean record; and, he is more electible. I believe the "old school" super delegates DO NOT WANT Obama to win the nomination as things in Washington will never be the same. Besides how many of those Super Delegates are hip deep in PAC obligations?

It would be tragic for this country if the voice of the "we, the people" do not triumph over the "super-delegates". "Democracy" will have to be re-defined!!!

Stop using the word "Democracy" to describe our system! We actually have a "Representative Democratic Republic" which is a big difference. In other words we elect people to decide the issues and how to settle them. We do not decide anything by popular vote.

Why is this even a discussion when it's a very real possibility that Michigan and Florida's delegates will count in the end? Taking those delegates into account, along with the upcoming primaries, there is no guarantee that Obama will be ahead in pledged delegates when the primaries are over. It's pretty presumptuous to already claim that he will win the pledged delegate count, especially when the pledged delegates are still being allocated (every news website has a different count), and the primaries are far from being over.

It is unnerving. If these party Bosses end up deciding the election.. what is this the 19th century? I want Obama to win, but if Hillary ends up winning the popular vote the Superdelegates should follow that too. Of course I may be tempted to vote for McCain if Hillary does become the candidate for the general election .... take that into consideration people. There are a lot of people like me who are voting on the content of these peoples character, and not necessarily their party affiliation.

Obama cry babies- once Karl Rove gets inside Obamas skeleton closet he will be dragged through the mud and vilified.
Who are you going to come crying to?

Right now HRC is leading in the popuilar vote. You want the superdelegates eliminated? then get rid of the electoral college as well.

You and the so called press have continually demonized HRC who has proven herself to be a very capable senator. What has Obama delivered so far? unsubstantiated promises like sounds like the salesman selling snake oil.

voter says:

Obama says "change" and "hope" and has nothing else. Charismatic? Yes. Unfortunately, so are lots of people we've slept with and later regretted. So, why jump in bed so fast with Obama?

I think people who are getting all excited about Obama, and overlooking or rooting against Clinton, are doing it for a few reasons:

First, they're sick of Bush and want to see someone who shares their anger. Obama captures that well -- charisma will do that; makes poeople feel he "understands." Remember, this is a technique anyone can learn, particularly someone like Obama who is bright enough that he headed the Harvard Law Review. Second, to be blunt, a lot of people who are sickened by horrible things in America's past (like the Kennedy assassinations -- only to see Republicans like Nixon and his crew take over at the next election and America's history of slavery and racism) see what they WANT to see in Obama -- an articulate African American who embodies what so many want to see: proof to the world that America can do good, not evil. Third, people are weakened and hurt from eight years of abuse that is the nightmare of W (worst) Bush. Obama, like a predator, sees the vulnerable, and is plying them with his learned charisma. Fourth, some losers actually believe the mysogenist crap they have been hearing about Hillary for all too long. Idiots like 10:34 even threaten to jump ship if they can't have their way. I blame lack of brain plus eight years of torture on such twisted logic (although, frankly, I thikn none oif us is sad to se ANYONE or their dog replace Bush, as anyting is a step up, and really, McCain comes pretty close to being OK as far as some of those in the Republica party go.)

Now, what's wrong with Obama?

No substance. All promise. Chicagoans learned years ago that stuff don't work. Obama sometimes brags he is a Chicagoan, and perhaps he thinks empty promises are the way to woo. But his "change" and "hope" mantras, repeated over and over and over, in the end, offer us nothing.

Look, Obama is not an evil man. He may not be a bad President, but who knows? Charisma has enables really attrocious people in our world';s history to do what they want. You connect the dots. Obama isn't the worst, but we just don't know WHAT he's good for.

Good segue to the next point -- what's good about Hillary?

Clarity and basis for her ideas. Experience. She's taken lumps, she's given lumps. In the end, the fact is she DOESN'T GIVE UP. Obama says what people want to hear, but Hillary Clinton says what she believes and what she will really accomplish. Some empty promises, but compared with Obama, there is no comparison.

Not to mention, her husband Bill (like I had to say his name?) remains one of the world's most influentuial and respected former world leaders. Love him or not, that's a fact.

I'm done. It is vitally important you support Hillary Clinton now. Moreover, for those who say "electability" is their concern, actually, remind yourself of this: she will beat McCain, but Obama can't. You know the reasons. I truly believe Hillary Clinton can win. Please support her, and please be polite.

we might as well get ready for Mccain, not only will Obama troops not support hillary in the general election, we will switch party by the millions. If obama have one more pledge delegate that nomination belongs to him. Watch out you are ready to get ran over. Demolition of the Democratic party is underway. Hillary cant win against a war hero anyway, especially if she voted for it and people know she would take a dump on her mothers grave. Vote all the current democrats out of office. Hillary must be removed. Obama troops with only accept Presidency for him. Otherwise the Democratic party demolishment will begin

Bari says:

I'm afraid if hillary clinton gets the nomination by superdelegates, people would be more disenfranchised from the democratic process. They will really feel like their vote did not count. Clinton is very polarizing. Obama is the one that can bring people together, plus his record is clean. Let the will of the people be heard! Don't use the superdelegates!

Posted On: Saturday, Feb. 9 2008 @ 7:16PM
Nick says:

A lot of democrats have a bad taste in their mouths for stolen elections. If the superdelegates actually decide this vote over the choice of the people, there will be some people who just won't forgive come the general election.

And also, to the person who implied that we shouldn't vote for Obama because he can't win in the general election because he's black. You're in essence asking us not to vote for him because he's black. That is the very definition of racist.

Edna Turner says:

If Hillary wins outright, I will support her, she's better than McCain. If she takes the nomination by way of super delegates, hello President McCain. That would make her just another crook form Washington

H. Chad says:

Blacks are voting for Obama at a 90% clip in the primaries. If he wins the nomination, in the general election it will probably be 99%. There's bound to be some white and latino anti-Obama voting that occurs based on this obvious black race-bloc voting. Which will tip the scales, or if it will even be the deciding factor is not clear but is foolish to ignore.

Robert says:

It should also be noted that a big reason NOT to support Clinton is that we do not need another dynasty. This is a big country, and the idea of having "four more years" of anything, even if we liked the Clintons during Bill's eight years in office, is a violation of the spirit of American democracy (even if, or especially since, it's a Democratic Republic). I feel bad that I cannot enthusiastically support a woman who is running for president, but I can't support this one. We need new blood in office, a new direction. If Obama has been a bit vague, maybe that's good: the Clinton approach has been top-down, back-room, policy-wonk driven, to the point of being paternalistic. Obama's vagueness could be just as easily seen as an indication of a willingness to listen, which would be a breath of fresh air. Frankly, we would be better off if Clinton (Hillary) stepped aside: her day is past; she ought to be happy in the Senate -- and I want to make it very clear that I am NOT saying that a woman should not be the president: that this year we have an African-American and a Woman running is a great, wonderful, exciting thing. No, it's just Hillary Clinton, in particular, and not because she's bad. Neither she nor anyone else is entitled to the Presidency; that she is running at all is self-centered on her part. Enough already! Let's try something else, for the good of the country, shall we?

mike says:

Although the superdelegates have a choice to vote however they would like - I believe they must vote for Clinton or Obama based on the majority of the popular vote.

We do have a way to hold them to this - we, the people, are represented by these superdelegates - if they burn us by not voting for the candidate we choose, we can, and will, burn them at the stake when it comes time for their reelections.

We do have more than a bit of power here in the form of retribution - which isn't the preferred form of power - as our votes should be enough power to begin with - but, if need be we can vote these superdelegates out of office - and if they have a brain in their collective heads - they will keep this in mind when they cast their votes.

It's an absolutely horrible system that's been set-up by OUR "representatives" which needs to come to an end.

LadyHawk says:

Hillary is the Illuminati's choice as the next US president, and John McCain is the chosen "loser." The elite, not "We the People" control the vote. Everything else is just a grand circus performance to make us believe that we have some say in the matter. We don't. Get used to it. Hillary is one of the most influential in the secret government's New World Order group, and that group has its reasons for rigging the voting process, so that various candidates in each party come out on top in one state or another. As long as these top tier candidates remain hopeful of getting their party’s nomination, they will stick to Illuminati-approved topics and avoid critical issues. This keeps the true state of the union under wraps in their speeches and helps to keep voters uncertain about whom to believe and whom to trust in what is relentlessly publicized as an Al Qaeda-terrorized world. Hah!

Al Qaeda is nothing more than the creation of the Bushites and the mainstream media. How much more obvious Wake up can it be that the only candidates who are not under the thumb of the Illuminati are the ones who are all but excluded from media attention? It's no coincidence that the establishment media censors, marginalizes, lies about and does their best not to tell you about candidates like Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.

Eventually all leaders of all nations will be honest, wise and capable souls. FOr the momentl however, they are not. The most reliable source of reports that cover what contradicts, and what is omitted in, the mainstream media is at whatreallyhappened.com and www.americanfreepress.net

Not only those in leadership positions are important -- EVERY soul is essential, and simply by radiating our own highest light, each of us is contributing to the transformation of the nation and our world. Stay awake. Keep educated. We are all in this together, and the time is upon us to help turn this around.

Absolutely Obama is a wright candidate for president. There is no qestion that this country need new face in White House with new polices new aideas. Many people-politicians need to be replaced especialy one that stays in senat and congress decades 20,30 and 40 years. These people are afreid of changes, because they make big dollars. Is time ,USA need to wake up and make changes, nothing stays forever, same old politics one day die. This is the time and we the people must recognize it and be smart to take chance and vote for Obama,if we blow it ,we not gonna have another chance for next four or eight years or longer. This is historical moment in our country that respect democracy and treat everybody equally.Myself as a white adult, I dont see a problem in a black candidate. Obama as a first black president gonna bring new feelings for whole nation, new aideas. That inside in our country, but lets not forget there is outside world and there will be many nations, that will begin look differently at USA more friendly, Im talking across Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa and South America. We need to understand that Hillary is only acting,do not trust her,she will not change this country. If she become president, first thing that people will be dissapointed is war in Iraq. Hillary after six months gonna introduce to us, that after her consideration war need to continue and troops need to stay in Iraq. Next thing she is gonna tell us, that her medical coverage for every american is not working and she gonna adopted Obama plan. America no need another four years of Bush politics, but also no need another Clintonian era. Hillary already prove to american people, that she is weak histerical candidate, she got whole family running for her, not only husband, her own daughter also. This should be illegal.Hillary only herself should make spechess for herself. I must added, if she lose election I like to tell her not to worry, you got yourself a new carrier a acting carrier in Hollywood(horror movies) she is good in that. Beside that USA no need president with tears in stage during speaches. At one minute shes about to cry, very next minute she smiling. Personally she make me sick, she turn my stomak upsidedown. Those who vote for her, those poor people, they must be blind not to see her acting and giving people empty promises, droping few tears and take all crowd of people magicly.During her speaches, she is pushing people to aplause. How she do that? She begin talk slow, her voice is soft, her face is high, actually her chin is so high and then start get slowly lauder and lauder "We getting sronger and stronger" at that moment her voice going to maximum laud "We gonna win this election" and here is the magic everybody immediately respond with aplause.Chelsea my advice to her, need to back off,and not to run for mother. That gonna have impact in her future years. She also gonna be a failure looser. Im gonna criticize Hillary a big way I wish I have more people willing to go to the streets in every town and city where Hillary visiting and protest against her lies, good I never bought her book full of lies.
