John Edwards Backs the 'Iraq/Recession' Campaign

By John DeSio, Monday, Feb. 25 2008 @ 4:13PM

Categories: Terror and War

Though he’s officially left the race for the White House John Edwards is still hoping to shape the debate, lending his name to a new “out of Iraq” movement and targeting John McCain for defeat.

Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and twice-failed candidate for Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, has signed up along with his wife Elizabeth to help launch a new effort that will present the war in Iraq as fiscally irresponsible, and place much of the responsibility for the war on Senator McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

The “Iraq/Recession” campaign, led by a coalition of unions and activist groups such as SEIU, Move On, and the Center for American Progress, will look to tie economic troubles at home to military spending abroad. It will also look to highlight the choice between an anti-war Democrat and a pro-war Republican. Edwards reeled off a laundry list of issues — from healthcare to the mortgage crisis to the potential recession to the number of Americans living in poverty — as symptoms of overspending in Iraq.

“All these things are made much worse by concern about what’s happening in Iraq,” said Edwards in a conference call with reporters. “The war in Iraq, at least from my perspective, needs to be brought to an end for a lot of reasons.”

Edwards criticized McCain's support for the war and his recent statements that he would be willing to stay in Iraq for “100 years,” if that’s how long it takes to win.

“This is not what the American people want to see,” said Edwards. “If they see a direct connection between the spending in Iraq, the economic anxiety caused by that, the price of oil, the price of gasoline, all those things, and this ongoing war in Iraq. For that reason, among others, they want to see this war brought to an end."

The $20 million initiative will target not only McCain but several Republican senators facing tough reelection battles this year. But it was clear from Edwards’ comments that the McCain is the top priority of the effort.

“We want to make certain that the American people know that they have a very clear choice in this election,” said Edwards. “And that choice is between a Democratic nominee for president that will end this war and who will focus on all these issues that are creating economic anxiety and insecurity among so many Americans, because that’s what the American people want to see; and the other choice being Senator McCain, the Republican nominee, who intends to continue the war, to continue the incredibly failed policies of George Bush.”

Edwards added, “The American people deserve that choice. I think it will be absolutely clear what the voters want when that choice is presented to them.”

So, is Edwards trying to say he endorses Obama?

Definitely sounds like an endorsement precursor. Just how much that will matter since his campaign was, for all intent and purposes, a flop, is the question.

Dumbocons says:

Edwards shouldn't endorse either Clinton or Obama, since neither has any chance whatsoever of winning in November.

Obama isn't anti-war. He just was lucky enough not to be in the Senate when they voted to go to war.
His campaign laid out the platfrom for the others to follow.

I was sadden when you left the campaign and glad to see you back! Folks keep saying that we can not leave, I'm glad that there is some one that says that we can and we must! I am hopeful that you will succeed in informing the American people of the tremendous costs and unmentioned, disguised and distorted consequences of this war. It is unfortunate that we "continue doing the same things over and over again, expecting different results." When will we learn that rigidity does not reflect maturity or good judgment.

Julie Hensley says:

Hillary is not prowar in Iraq. She voted for it but she's reversed herself so she's certainly not on the same track as McCain (you wanna eye opener read the article about him in the magazine American Conservative - it's online).

Yes, the groups involved endorsed Obama but Edwards is staying away from endorsing in case his help is needed to resolve a situation where it's undecided come convention time.

Obama voted against aggression in Iraq. The initial vote was not the only one and his position was strong and vocal continuously throughout the conflict.

If you think that McCain is the inevitable 'leader of the US' - I hope you realize how much you have to be scared of. He is a war monger of the likes we've not seen. He'll make Rumsfeld and Cheney look low key. He has little interest and no knowledge of domestic issues and his ability internationally has been for war which is still his focus. He's made no bones that we'd be in Iran now if it were up to him. How many fronts do you think this country can handle at once?

Read The Cross of Iron speech by Eisenhower. That was a Republican Military President that understood that no war is ever WON.

Phyllis Hancock says:

Dear John,

Two days ago,I sent the following to Ralph Nader. You also have the resources to determine if Obama is guilty by association or was simply not aware of how his relationships would be scrutinized during a presidential election.

Dear Mr Nader,

I welcome the news that you are entering the presidential race. My reason is simple. I want to know the real Obama. Is he the person being portrayed in the media or someone completely different? As I have attempted to answer these questions, I came across 52 articles that have been written by The Chicago Sun Times.

The Rezko/Obama relationship is the subject of most of these articles. Rezko is presently in jail. His bail was revoked because of his ties with a London-based Iraqi billionaire Nadhmi Auchi. Other articles point out that that Jeremiah A. Wright Jr, who is the reverend of Obama’s church, has heaped praise on Farrakhan! Also, Wright’s church was behind the award to the Nation of Islam leader. Another undesirable relationship is with William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn who are better known as two of the most notorious figures of the violent fringe of the 1960 anti-war movement. (Also, Ayers was the founder of the Weathermen.)

I have written the above based on FACTS. It is not my intention to make Obama guilty by association. However, Mr. Nader, you have the resources to investigate and determine if Obama has simply been naïve during the past 19 years or do these relationships give voters a cause of concern.

Mr. Nader, only you can prevent voters from “possibly” making a serious mistake. Please investigate. For some reason, the media keeps a lid on Obama’s background! Hillary can not confront Obama. Whenever she tries, she is accursed of being negative.

Mr. Nader, please at least take the time to read the Sun Times articles and then make your decision if these give cause for more research.

The articles sure do give the republicans a lot of ammunition.

Thank You, Phyllis

Hellow John.
I am one of those American poverty statistics you feel so compassionate about.

Since the depression both sides of my family have suffered extreme poverty in the southwest region of these great United States.

Throughout all the bad times, we have remained politically active and steadfast democrats.

I am truly saddened at the state this election has fallen into.

At the caucus for this state and the recent democratic convention I was appalled at the blatent arrogance and hostility of the obama supporters.

I cannot and will not support a candidate who instills such mob-like characteristics in his followers.

If Hillary does not receive the nomination, this deeply-poverty stricken, voter will jump ship.

By the way, that is the view of most of the voters I associate with in my small circle of poor but always proud Americans.

Mr. Edwards - PLEASE!!!!
We wish you were still in the race, but since you are not, in my opinion, you should endorse Hillary. Her goals are your goals.
Her goals are for the American people, for this country.
She is the real deal. she is strong, she is tough, she has been fighting an uphill battle due to the media bias.
PLEASE, so not fall into the Obama trap. I beg you.
How could you ever vote or endorse Obama????
Do you really believe he is ready for this?
I want so badly for the Democrats to take back the White House.
But, I will have a very very hard time casting my vote for Barack Obama. My other best choice - Nader???

Please endorse Hillary, and soon!
Thank You Sir for your commitments to this country.

Dear John.

I am a native New Mexican, transplanted to Las Vegas. I have worked on many campaigns in New Mexico, Shirley Baca, Senator Bingaman, Bill Richardson, President Clinton, and most recently Hillary Clinton in Las Vegas. I have spent countless hours working at the democratic headquarters in Dona Ana County with my children by my side.

I have a great deal of respect for you and for the Democratic Party. I also have a vested interest in politics, my father served in the Korean war, I received a BA in government from NMSU, my oldest son is working on his Doctorate in International Relations at Virginia Tech, and my youngest daughter is in the army.

My family has lived in New Mexico for generations and we are devoted democrats. We are also, all of us, supporters of Hillary Clinton.

We cannot, and will not support Obama.

There are some silent voters out there, listening to all the slamming from the obama followers, and It breaks our heart to think we have regressed so deeply into sexism just to prove we are forward thinking on racism.

After the obamites have gone back into their respective slumber of post primary syndrome, we will silently pull the lever for an alternate choice and let the party decide where they went wrong in this movement of the masses.

Hopefully you can see beyond the candidate to the actual polarization he is creating in the electorate. At the Clark County convention, there were screaming matches between the two camps. It is frightening to see the charged emotions these followers have for their self absorbed leader.

I fear the result of this election, if it does not go as the masses predict, could lead to increased violence in a youth that is already armed with weapons we would never have used to settle disagreements in the sixties and seventies.

I fear for my children and grandchildren.

You did quite well to demonstrate exactly the negative nature that the commentor immediately before you attributes to Obama supporters. Congratulations!

As with Fred above, my family also is one of the less well off people in America. I have voted in every single election in my state, not just for president, since I was old enough to vote
I too am deeply troubled by the vile comments and total lack of respect for other democrats, coming from Obama supporters. It is very upsetting.
Fred is not alone in his planning on jumping ship should Hillary not win the nomination. There are many of us who feel this way and will not be "Hoodwinked or bamboozled", (to borrow someones words).

Sharron says:

John Edwards should not endorse either of them.

The Democrats need John Edwards to come to bat to win in November and he will do that, no matter who the nominee is.

The manipulated nature of the race has created a situation that leaves too many of us unsure as to which one will be the best president.
Pro's and Con's for each of them.

When juxtaposed with the kind of President we would get out of an Edwards Administration the choice leaves a whole lot to be desired.
I am glad I was able to vote for John Edwards on Feb 5th.

Fred and Tana, I agree. I was at a Hillary Clinton event in DC and there were Obama supporters standing across the street with signs that said "Bros before Ho's". Local college boys. Nice that they can afford college. Probably mom and dad are paying. Does mom know they hate women? Or does mom think that's ok like a lot of other Americans do?

Hillary can do this. I hope Senator Edwards realizes that she will do the most to end poverty. I dont think its going to end anytime soon, but she will certainly get us closer to Mr. Edwards' goal than anyone else.

I still have no clue on which candidate to vote for since John Edwards withdrew from the presidency. I'm sorry but I do not feel that Hillary or Barack speak for the volumes of poor and lower-middle class citizens. I'm sure I'll cast a vote for whomever wins the nomination but I am EXTREMELY disappointed... you were the first candidate I ever totally agreed with on every issue and financially supported. I'm just so sad that my hard-earned money was a throwaway. I hope you won't forget your supporters in the future and please do everything you can to stop the insanity of poverty in the USA.

LL says:

Hillary is the best candidate to lead the country at this point. Obama had the chance to prove his leadership and never called one meeting of the Senate sub committee on foreign affairs that he chairs. Unfortunately the media just doesn't care about this important issue or the weak excuse he offered for not doing the job he was elected to do. We cannot have someone like this in office. The republicans will make mince meat out of him and rightfully so--it is shameful that he takes taxpayer money and puts out a thin resume that could have been better had he done what he was elected to do. Mr. Edwards if you can't at this point garner the support for president then unite the party, support Hillary and go for the vice presidency. What an incredible team the two of you would make to get our country back on track. We can win with the two of you. We'll lose with Obama as the candidate. Please consider a run with Hillary.

New York was attacked by terrorists. FACT. Anthrax was being feared by all. FACT. Senator Clinton voted for the war after being mislead by he Bush administration and faulty intel on WMD. FACT.
She voted for what was right for the State of New York at the time and for that matter what most Americans felt was right. She said she would have voted differently if she knew then what she knows now. So garbage in created garbage out. I still feel it was sound judgement for her at that time based on intel fed to her.
In the Ohio debate, Senator Obama stated he would take back his Terry Shrivo vote. He said, he knew better but cast his vote anyway. Is this sound judgement? Why is this judgement issue not raised? He had all the knowledge needed for his correct vote. He can not say garbage in created garbage out, he knew better. It was just poor judgement. period.
