Worker Pleads Guilty in Adrienne Shelley Slaying

Categories: Crime

A construction worker has entered a guilty plea in the murder of actress Adrienne Shelley in her West Village Apartment in November 2006. Diego Pillco, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, waived his right to a trial and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He will receive a 25-year sentence next month, according to Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau. From the DA's office:

In court today, PILLCO admitted that on November 1, 2006 at 15 Abingdon Square, he rode up in the elevator with the victim, Adrienne Levine (Shelly). The defendant noticed that the victim was carrying a big black purse and observed what floor button she pressed. PILLCO rode up one extra floor in the elevator and walked down the stairs to Levine’s floor. The door to Levine’s apartment was ajar; the defendant entered, saw the black bag, and took out her wallet. The victim confronted him and reached for the phone to call the police. PILLCO grabbed the phone and a fight ensued. The defendant further admitted that he covered the victim’s mouth and nose with his hand until she passed out. He then took a sheet, choked her to death, and made it look like a suicide.

At least justice will finally be served in this terribly tragic case .

In retrospect, it's still appalling at how quickly the police were willing to write-off the life of such a beautiful, happily married, successful woman by simply calling her death a suicide.

The initial press coverage was totally inexcusable, blaming the female victim by printing many sensationalist headlines like, "Actress Set Off Illegal's "KILLER" Rage by Calling Him 'S.O.B." and other similar comments--headlines laced with innuendo against the actress by printing the killer's version of the story as if it were some kind of gospel.

The press was quick to make Shelly out as an irate actress yelling profanities at a poor hard-working immigrant. These headlines set off a firestorm of comments on whether or not she had any right to call him names! Implying that her bad temper probably caused him to lose control, and even worse creating a debate among idiots that actually believed these reports because they were printed in the press. Many people were commenting on how she might have avoided these tragic events if only she hadn't yelled at him! Are people really that stupid?

Many media outlets also took it upon themselves to make Pillco, the brutal murderer, look angelic with bold headlines stating "how respectful and decent and responsible he was" and that "he was just another hardworking immigrant."
Pillco’s cousin also told The Post that the accused killer was “quiet and peaceful. He didn’t have a temper,” and was working to pay off his smuggling debt, and to support his parents and five siblings back in Ecuador."

I think we've all heard similar comments from the family and friends of serial killers. If the media is going to defend the accused with such winning personality profiles. It would be nice if they would have taken the time to do the same for the victim, shedding even a remote amount of positive light in her direction.

Bottom line is that the media should have done a much better job considering the circumstances of this case. A defendant who brutally killed the victim and then made it look like a suicide, this in itself is especially egregious, not to mention the fact that he calmly went to work at another job site afterwards.
So why would his side of the story be printed word for word as the ultimate truth?

Pillco may have been hard working as many immigrants are, but he was obviously very mentally disturbed. If he hadn't been stupid enough to leave those mysterious shoe prints on her toilet (while hanging her still breathing body), and if her loving and devoted husband hadn't been so diligent by refusing to accept her death as a suicide, this cold blooded killer would most likely still be walking the streets.

As for all of those immigrant haters out there, this case is not about Pillco being here illegally. American citizens commit just as many heinous crimes. Frankly, I can't think of one serial killer who was here illegally.

on a final note:

GOD bless her, her husband and baby daughter. It's difficult enough to lose someone you love under normal circumstances, let alone by a senseless crime. The press needs to do a much better job of shedding some positive light on the victims instead of glorifying the accused.

And if he had gotten away with the murder, his priest would have forgiven him, and Pillco would have lived happily ever after....

A tragedy by any sense of the word. That being said George....Catholic hating is not called for, although currently en vogue. You do a the memory of this exceptional artist a disservice by bringing more hate into an already horrible and sad situation. Shame on you. My prayers are with this amazing woman's family. And I'm sure that God will accept them whether Catholic, Muslim, Hindu or Jewish.

Shea...Shame on me? For stating a truth? And who said anything about Catholic? I just said priest. And I do bring more hate into a "horrible and sad situation". Yes...I bring a lot more hate into this situation; more than you can imagine. I hate this bastard pillco. And if he does wind up in Heaven, I'm not going.

So the poor mother $%^ was working to pay off his SMUGGLING DEBT! And sending AMERICAN dollars back home to his poor little family...WTF

He was stealing dollars to pay off a debt that is illegal, his even being here is illegal, and now our tax dollars will cloth and feed this sorry sack of shit for the next 25 years...only in America

Justice should be well served as his own country would serve it...BULLET TO THE HEAD...DEAD BASTARD...END OF STORY

All that crap about being so decent, respectful, yeah right. Hanging a woman who is already passed out is so very decent. The SOB could have just left at that point, but didn't. Seems to me he was quite calculating in making sure she couldn't talk. And then goes back to work...sheesh

I don't think this is the first time this bastard has stolen for money, pretty brazen act if you ask me, and it may not be the first time the decent guy has killed either. More like this time the person happened to be high profile and the case just wouldn't go away.

Being from Ecuador, he IS absolutly praying on his little plastic rosary beads...BFD

And the only reason the pig copped a no contest plea was his court appointed lawyer (paid by tax dollars) told him it was his best bet. To go before a jury would most likely have resulted in the death penalty or life. The decent guy looking out for his own ass!

Well, in prison...they will like his ass, every day I hope.

Oh, come on Michelle...you should not keep things like this bottled-up inside. Let it out; you'll feel much better. Say what's on your mind. People like you should learn to express yourself more, and forgive and forget.

I just saw Waitress for the 1st time, and I loved the part Adrienne played. I am so saddened that she died at all, let alone in such a sad & tragic way. She was beautiful! And perky & very talented. I hope she is resting in peace now, and that her family can get thru all the media crap.I hope people stop being mean to her memory. She doesn't deserve it.

I saw Waitress earlier this year and loved it. When I saw the memorial at the end credits, I was so shocked and saddened by Adrienne Shelly's death. I found and read a news article about her death and like so many comments made, I am so shocked at the heinous and senselessness of it all. From what I have read about Ms. Shelly, she was enormously talented in her field and a gifted storyteller. God bless her family and friends and I thank Ms. Shelly for bringing her wonderful work to us all.

I just saw Waitress tonight and loved it. When I saw the credits at the end and realized Ms. Shelley was deceased I was shocked. I Googled her name and found out she had been murdered...I started to type "senselessly murdered", but then realized that no murder makes sense. How horribly sad. She was clearly a gifted human being, and although I did not personally know her, a loving mother and wife. And although I did not know the murderer (Defendant is too polite a term - sorry), he does not appear to be qualified in the same category species. He deserves the death penalty, and nothing else.

My prayers to her daughter, husband and extended family...God Bless.

This circle of persons which make the commenting rounds possess a range beliefs, some of that are extremely powerful, but several of which I am absolutely convinced are accurate.
