Councilman Goes to Bat For 'Gotham City'

Call New York City what you will: The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. The Capital of the World.

While the city has had a number of nicknames over the years, no official second appellation exists. Now, one elected official is pushing the City Council to designate “Gotham City” as New York City’s chief nickname just in time for the summer release of "Batman: The Dark Night."

Queens Councilman Hiram Monserrate, who counts Batman as one of his childhood heroes, views his Gotham City pitch as a tourist lure. “I see that as a marketing tool, ‘Come visit the real Gotham City,’ taking advantage of this movie which will be one of those gate-breaking, record-selling movies like it always is,” he said.

Armed with this tagline and capitalizing on the flick’s buzz, Monserrate envisions theater-goers spending dollars on the streets of the living, breathing Gotham. “Come visit the real Gotham City and come visit our shops,” he said. “When we talk about Gotham we talk about tremendous, tremendous nightlife, restaurants, lounges, clubs and cafes, frappuccinos and everything else that we have in this City, the Village, Queens.”

The designation would also resonate with the art community, he added. “When we talk about Gotham we also talk about the rich architecture that our City enjoys. A lot of Gothic architecture exists in New York City. So Gotham’s also obviously related to Gothic and Gothic architecture which is a form of art, so it’s very important for our art community to strengthen its reconnection to being a Gotham City,” Monserrate said.

The dark and gritty streets of Batman fame were modeled after the landscape of Lower Manhattan. But long before the D.C. Comics depiction connected New York City and Gotham City, Washington Irving made the reference in 1807, drawing a comparison between the residents of the City and those of the town of Gotham in Nottinghamshire, England who evaded taxes by faking dementia, a condition thought to be contagious at the time.

Irving’s words, though referenced in the Council resolution, aren’t part of the marketing vision. When Monserrate plans to unleash a publicity campaign by the end of spring in an effort to energize the economy, he knows Batman is the real draw. “Batman is a childhood hero to millions of New Yorkers,” he said. “We all understand that Gotham is really about New York. So we are the Gotham City.”

Doesn't the New York City Council have anything better to do?

New York was called "Gotham" by Washington Irving; "Gotham City" is the crime-ridden city straight out of a comic book. New York City wants an official nickname from a comic book? Could the city council be any bigger sell-outs?

By the way, "the Big Apple" was popularized by a sportswriter, still buried in an unmarked grave. He heard "the big apple" in the early 1920s from an African-American stablehand in New Orleans who has never been honored. The 1930s Harlem "Big Apple" club at 135th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulavard (7th Ave.) had an iconic upside-down apple that was classlessly removed in 2006 to make way for a Popeye's restaurant. NYC did nothing to preserve this icon and now it's gone.

Why is the city council wasting resources on this silly resolution?

I think the council men is right, we need the bat man to save the city and bring life back to the city.

NY is the city that never sleep and need to be protected by the batman of Gotham .

I think the name change to Gotham City is Great. Especially during the NYC Real-estate Market Crisis!!! The Fed is trying to help, and I think we need someone to single handedly turn this market around. Who better than our own Billionaire Bachelor, (Mr. Bloomberg, aka. Bruce Wayne) to take that task. Mr. Monserrate, thank you for making the kid inside me happy!!!!!

THIS IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST IDEAS I EVER HEARD, I DONT THINK ANYONE THAT IS SUPPORTING THIS IDEA HAS EVER SEEN THE MOVIE BATMAN. GOTHAM CITY IN THE MOVIE WAS A CRIME AND DRUG CITY FULL OF CRAZY PEOPLE. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO POTRAY QUEENS TO BE LIKE THAT. WHY DONT YOU JUST NAME IT NEW JACK CITY...WHAT A RETARDED IDEA.

Posted by: QUEENS PRESIDENT at March 25, 2008 2:51 PM

THE CITY OF NEW YORK HAS COME TO MEAN A CITY OF THEFTS, ROBBERIES, RAPES AND MURDER. SINCE MAYOR BLOOMBERG (AKA BRUCE WAYNE) THE CITY HAS BECOME SAFE, HENCE THE NAME SHOULD BE CHANGED TO GOTHAM CITY. "NEW YORK" SHOULD HAVE A NAME THAT MAKES IT STAND OUT; THAT MAKES PEOPLE THINK OF HEROES, GOODNESS AND TRUTH. A CITY WHERE IN EMERGENCIES THE CITIZENS SHOW THE TRUE MEANING OF COMRADSHIP AMONG PEERS.

All of the negative that came out of the movies BATMAN, the end was a positive one with a Hero (someone to turn to in times of trouble) comes rolling on to support and protects its people. So naming the city GOTHAM CITY will send a feeling of of somethine good to come. Great Idea!!

Songs have been composed and made popular and also the City along with it which became the City's theme, the ever most popular NEW YORK NEW YORK. I think old blue eyes would not appreciate this, and also tourist around the world that already identify with this theme - SO NICE THEY NAMED IT TWISE. why take away that positive aspect of the city to associate it with crime. Please take it to the west OK!? Thank You.

Posted by: CEO STEVEN at March 28, 2008 7:36 PM

I think this is not the time to worry about the name of NEW YORK ....There are better things that they can be doing.

Posted by: NEW YORK at March 29, 2008 9:32 AM

well we do need heroes and looks like we have one in the Mayor. (Looks like we need another one for the mortgage crisis.)

whatever the history of Gotham City, it would be a fine nickname and one that could conjure up images of heroes, so I say we try it!

Posted by: jamesm at March 30, 2008 2:43 PM

What does the Big Red Apple stand for anyway?
You give the teacher an apple and eventually it spoils. "The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree” another example of Great implications to what New York represents.

Who ever is against Change, GROW UP!!
We are Right now Living the Worst CRASH of the Real-estate Market EVER!!!!!

Who or what is going to save us?

Maybe Gotham City will be some hope as to a more stable market, or we can just sit around and watch a Rotten Apple.

TO QUEENS PRESIDENT
NEW YORK HAS NEVER BEEN SAFE. I DONT KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE BUT IF YOU LIVE AMONG THE MASS POPULATION YOU KNOW IT IS A CITY OF CORRUPTION AND VIOLENCE FROM THE GOVORNER ON DOWN. CHILDREN HAVE NO EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, THE TRANSIT SYSTEM IS ARCHAIC, UNLESS YOU ARE AMONG THE RICH THE TOP 5% OF NEW YORK, MEDICAL COVERAGE IS ALMOST NON EXISTANT. EVERY DAY LEAVING HOME YOUR LUCKY TO ARRIVE BACK SAFELY. NEW YORK IS A CITY TO MAKE MONEY IN, BUT BELIEVE ME THE POLITICANS MAKE SURE THEY TAKE IT AS FAST AS YOU MAKE IT. LOOK AT THE NEW CONGESTION TAX, ALL POLITICIANS VOTED YEA. THINK OF THE COMMOM FOLK WHO WILL BEAR THE BURDEN OF IT. GOTHAM CITY, NATURALLY, WE NEED A HERO TO PROTECT US FROM THE BAD GUYS. THE BAD GUYS MOST OF THE TIME ARE NOT THE BURGLAR'S, RAPISTS AND MURDERERS, BUT MOSTLY THE POLITICIANS WHO PRETEND TO PROTECT US BUT FORGET ABOUT WHO VOTED THEM IN!

Posted by: ELAINE at April 1, 2008 1:02 PM

ELAINE, WHERE DO YOU LIVE THAT YOU THINK YOU'RE LUCKY TO MAKE IT BACK HOME AFTER A HARD DAYS WORK? OR IS THIS JUST A DELUSION IN YOUR PATHETIC MIND. AND I THINK YOU MIGHT ALSO BE A LITTLE SKITZO. IN ONE POST YOU PRAISE OUR MAYOR (BRUCE WAYNE) WHO BY THE WAY HAS FOUGHT FOR THE CONGESTION TAX.AND IN ANOTHER POST YOU BLAST THE POLITICIANS THAT FORGET WHO ELECTED THEM. HOW IS RENAMING OUR CITY GOING TO CHANGE THAT EINSTIEN? OOPS, I MEAN ELAINE. MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR PARANOID IDIOTIC THOUGHTS BACK TO THE BAT CAVE AND CONJURE UP A BETTER PLAN THEN RENAMING NEW YORK TO GOTHAM CITY SENILE ELAINE....

Posted by: SENILE ELAINE at April 2, 2008 12:05 PM

Okay such idiots I swear. First of all Yes NYC has violence and drugs and prostitution and it has areas that are known not to be safe, but so does other places throughout the state.Ok? So, please don't make it sound as though its only in New York and specifically NYC because its everywhere and anywhere. So, if you live in the richest neighborhoods, make six figures and think that violence or drugs will never be in your neighborhood your wrong. It just might start in your own house in the Hamptons in your son or daughters bedroom while your at work Darlin..If it's that bad in NY then GET OUT!!! MOVE TO MARS...where it just might be a perfect world just for you:)
