How the Spitzer Sex Scandal Could Help Joe Bruno

Posted by John DeSio at 7:45 PM, March 10, 2008

The resignation of Governor Eliot Spitzer could be the best thing that ever happened to Joe Bruno.

Bruno, the Republican State Senate majority leader, is hanging on to his lead over the Democrats in that body by just one vote, having just recently seen his candidate defeated in an upstate special election. Democrats have been counting on taking over the State Senate this year, and they expected to need only one seat to do so. Any ties in the State Senate would be broken by the lieutenant governor, in this case Democrat David Paterson.

Should Spitzer resign over his involvement in the Emperor’s Club prostitution scandal Paterson would be appointed as his replacement. That would leave Bruno to serve in the capacity of lieutenant governor, and the New York State constitution offers no mechanism to appoint any replacement. In effect the tie-breaker would be gone, and Democrats would face the more daunting task of taking over two seats to achieve a State Senate majority before 2011.

“In case of vacancy in the office of lieutenant-governor alone, or if the lieutenant-governor shall be impeached, absent from the state or otherwise unable to discharge the duties of office, the temporary president of the senate shall perform all the duties of lieutenant governor during such vacancy or inability,” reads the provision in the State Constitution regarding vacancies for lieutenant governor.

There is no way to replace the lieutenant governor in New York, and Paterson’s ascension would give Bruno more breathing room to hold his fading majority, said Alan Chartock, professor emeritus at University of Albany and a noted commentator on New York State government. Chartock said that he had once asked Paterson if he would be interested in taking Senator Hillary Clinton’s seat in Washington should she be elected president, and Paterson referenced the loss of his tie-breaking vote.

“He said, ‘not if we’re ahead by one vote,’ for exactly that reason,” said Chartock.

strange!!!

Any chance that this has Roger Stone's fingerprints on it at all? Everyone knows the history there....

Posted by: itsashame at March 10, 2008 9:18 PM

He should step down now. New york is in enough trouble. We would be better off without him. I new from day one this guy was not clean. I say in your face Democrates. With this now and the supposely state police scandle. Their should be a new election for governor.

Posted by: Peter at March 10, 2008 10:11 PM

Why should he resign? Did Vitter or Craig resign..no. They are still stinking up the joint. I'm not thrilled with what Spitzer did but this seems "conveniently timed" As James Carvel said on CNN why the FBI and who was behind this...well this article answers that in clearly. He may not be able to get done what he wanted in office but I rather he stay then give Bruno more power.
Better the evil you know than the evil you don't. Bruno is a cancer and I can't wait till he gone for good.

Some of you idiots need to learn how to write. And there is no governor "for nyc" lea. But thank God if this helps the Republicans hold onto the Senate. A Democrat-controlled state would destroy New York. What a godsend!

Posted by: Luke at March 11, 2008 12:58 AM

The Republicans are always stealing money. The Democrats are always having illicit sex. Between the two, I don't care what people do with their genitals on their own time. I'm only worried about theft.

The Mann act makes Spitzers crime a federal offence. Its a felony!
He could be tried in any state from ny to maryland. How could anybody justify this crime. He put people away for less.
Lets put aside our personal feelings and politcal partys. We sould make an example of him.Throw the book at him.

GOV. SPITZER DESERVES A BENEFIT OF DOUBT AND FORGIVENESS

New Yorkers Should Not Rush To Judge Gov Spitzer

I have just heard the news of Gov. Elliot Spitzer being implicated in patronizing a prostitute.

This is one of the saddest news I have ever heard in New York besides the 9/11 tragedy.

However, New Yorkers should breathe a sigh of relief that the tryst involved a woman and not a man like the New Jersey case.

Besides the woman involved is not one of his staff! (Or an intern.)

Gov. Spitzer is among the most intelligent Americans.

And sometimes intelligent men can make serious errors.

Infact only very intelligent people are capable of making serious errors!

Can you imagine a moron making an error?

I do not think that having a tryst is a big crime, so the question of Gov Spitzer resigning should not arise.

What may annoy many people around the country is that as New York Attorney general, his cases included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution network and tourism involving prostitutes.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service racket in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution.

However, let me point out that there have been other political leaders, both Republican and Democratic who have had sex scandals.

Does anyone remember Gary Hart and Donna Rice scandal?

How about Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) and Sen. David Vitter (R-LS),( the latter two known for their strong conservative politics and agenda of "family values.")?

Millions of people all over America and the world visit and sleep with hookers and watch porn online.

Almost 60% of American women and girls are directly or indirectly involved in prostitution or porn.

Just Google for porn sites and see millions of porn sites and millions of porn Actresses who act in them and billions of porn movies.
(For general porn industry statistics, go to: http://familysafemedia.com/pornography_statistics.html#anchor4)

So, to the bull dogs, his detractors, anyone who has never had a tryst; anyone has never slept with a hooker or watched a porn movie and who is very self righteous and who may want to pounce on Gov. Spitzer, I say take it easy and back off.

Let everybody remember that Slick Willie had some trysts including one in the White House, the highest office in the land and yet he was elected the President twice and never resigned.

Let everybody remember that he is alleged to have had a tryst.

He did not commit murder or send 19 yr old innocent children to go die in a senseless war oversea.

He did not blast a few ICBMs at an innocent country and killed innocent women and children just to cover up his wrong doing like some other elected officials have done.

He did not exchange arms for drugs and did not sell weapons to terrorists!

So, let us keep things in perspective.

This is about sex, yes, just sex.

And once in their lives, men are tempted to have trysts.
This is common among most men.

Men are tempted to have trysts due to many reasons that may include boredom, stress and frustrations.

And it is not only men who have trysts. Women have trysts too.

Gov Spitzer is a human being and he should be allowed to make a few mistakes and errors in judgment.

What elected officials do in their spare times including sexually, should not become issues for the public to discuss because elected officials are human beings too.

Gov. Spitzer had worked very had for New York for many years and helped many New Yorkers to fight injustice.

The state should give him a benefit of doubt and allow him to finish serving his term in office.

If all elected officials are systematically investigated, I am sure many would be found to have committed far more serious errors in judgment that would make Gov. Spitzer's mistake look like a joke.

I also urge Gov Spitzer's wife to be forgiving because it is unfair to judge a good man because he made just one mistake.

To err is human and to forgive is divine.

I ask her to be merciful and help her husband to examine their marriage and fix any areas where there might have been problems that they neglected.

It is unwise to allow one mistake to destroy a 21 yr happy marriage.

Besides, the Gov has apologized.

He did not try to deny it by saying “I met that woman but did not have sex with her”.

Or “I slept with that woman but did not cuum, so I did not have any sex, so I did not break any law of my country”

The only reason why this may be a shocking news is that the Governor built his political career on aggressively investigating and prosecuting high profile media grabbing crimes.

He had been a relentless and uncompromising crusader for morals, ethics, principles, transparency and law-and-order.

Because of this scandal, surely, many liberals would feel disappointed because they had very high hopes for him as a rising star with a very bright future in national politics.

I am one of those who admired Gov. Spitzer and wished that someday he would end up in the White House!

I urge New Yorkers to overlook this and let us move on!

It could have been worse! scogostology.com

This embarressing albeit not surprising misstep will be used by the radical Musilms to further evidence this country's immoral leadership. When will we learn that those who are self rightous often have skeletons in their closet.

Reading over these comments, I say we need an "Education" Governor, and a reality-check" Governor.

There's a really long post in this thread that claims "Almost 60% of American women and girls are directly or indirectly involved in prostitution or porn." I don't know how one would be "indirectly involved in prostitution or porn," but I'm guessing that would be in some sort of managerial position? In any case, it is the most ridiculous "statistic" I have ever seen. Perhaps .60% would be accurate, as it has to be less than 1%.

Then, there's the comment from "Peter" above -- wherein he confuses "there" with "their" and "new" with "knew", and makes several other spelling errors -- virtually one in every sentence.

New York needs a Governor committed to educating New Yorkers -- so that they can spell, and so that they can recognize an absurd statistical claim when they see it.

Hey scogostology alot of what you say sounded good, you might want to edit or retract, "Almost 60% of American women and girls are directly or indirectly involved in prostitution or porn." That way off.

Thanks for your feedback!

(1) For general stats on porn industry, please visit:

http://familysafemedia.com/pornography_statistics.html#anchor4

(2) For general stats on prostitution, see:

http://www.uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes/usa.htm

And after reading the stats, you must realize that the stats do not include closet hookers, strippers, nude dirty dancers, prostitutes who pose as glamour models but are actually using glamour models as fronts for their prostitutions, career women who are hookers in the night and just every other girl who is running around sleeping with different men to get money for her drug habits.

Then consider all the millions of college girls who have web cams and operate from their dorm!

After all that, let us try to be aware that anytime a man has sex with any woman and gives her a gift or money, it is a form of prostitution because you are paying for the sex, okay, just like you pay the hooker you picked from a street corner or escort services or brothels!

When you add all that up, then you may be shocked that 60% of American women may be engaging in prostitution and acting in sleazy sickening porn movies and may not realize what they are doing, because they are having sex and getting paid for it too.

Usually, the ones considered prostitutes and hookers are the ones you pick up on shady street corners or via the brothels as call-girls from escort services.

But those are just the tips of gigantic nationwide prostitution epidemic.

Blah Blah Blah I always knew New Yorkers were stupid but this just proves it! I mean you elected Hillarythewitch twice- hello she isn't from NY and never accomplished anything other than marrying someone for power. It wouldn't be "just sex" if it was your significant other. Spitzer used the flimsiest of excuses to prosecute innocent people based on a law from 1926- he didn't have jurisdiction to do half of what he did and he damaged the U.S. economy in doing so. We are paying for it now. But then I guess you'd have to know economics to understand that. Democrats are the thieves in this country- raising our taxes out of control to do what- tell us how to live our lives? Like the complete lie that is "global warming". Doesn't exist- talk to a real scientist- oh I forgot, democrats don't like facts and figures as they interfere with what they think is good for us. Probably why real math isn't taught in schools anymore. Get rid of Spitzer- he just exposed how much of a hypocrite he is!

Posted by: JeanneB at March 11, 2008 12:56 PM

AY YI YI! People are so limited in their thinking. This debacle is not so much about sex the man may have had...it is about the caped crusader becoming mister I am above the law I have so vigorously enforced and sneered publicly at those who have broken it...being hoisted on his own petard. Not good for making the wheels of government turn smoothly while the budget is pending and we all collectively hold our breath. Take a hike Eliot. I voted for you for governor, but wouldn't give a hot dime for your sorry behind now.

Posted by: Peggy at March 11, 2008 2:54 PM

Its tough decision about Gov. Spitzer to resign, but I personally feel because of what he did and it was illegal, he broke the oath, also if we New Yorkers want good leader, we have to be firm and follow the rules. He broke the rule so he has to be out of the office. We can't just start making the habit saying "oh it ok he made a mistake and let him go" we can't do that because it will just keep going on and on. I want to give Lt Governor David Patterson warm welcome to be our new Governor :-). I personally am profoundly deaf and I do know that disability wont affect David Patterson's work, he will be our good strong leader for our state :-). I hope can meet him someday.

Luke seems to be satisfied with the status quo of "one of the most dysfunctional state governments in the United States" It is idiots like luke that continue to support the republican led senate which is drowning in corruption and dragging the whole of our State with them.

Posted by: dan at March 12, 2008 11:47 AM

dan, in case you didn't notice, the corruption keeps coming from one direction -- the Democratic (now ex-)governor. I didn't vote for Spitzer (I voted Green Party) -- I always thought he was too high on himself.

Hopefully the Republicans keep a hold on the Senate so that the Dems and Republicans can keep tabs on each other. We need the checks and balances and partisan fighting to continue in Albany to keep a little honesty in public office up there. When one party rules, government mismanagement usually goes off the charts.

"anytime a man has sex with any woman and gives her a gift or money, it is a form of prostitution"

Holy Crap! I've had sex with my wife and given her gifts.

What a slut!
