OK, this is just getting ridiculous. The New York Post has completely embraced becoming a high-school gossip rag with its front page today. You can hear the buzz in the hallways: "Ooh, I heard that so-and-so is going to get it after the final bell!" The "HUBBY FURY" on the front page is just another way to milk the Paterson mini-scandal for another day. (Oh, come on! Compared to Spitzer and McGreevey this is small potatoes.) Sources close to the husband of Lila Kurton warn Paterson to stay away from her "big guy" husband? It seems that Gov. Paterson would probably have better things to do than to go see what Kurton's husband Randy Loyd is up to. Running the business of the State of New York comes to mind. The story did give us a few hilarious photos of Loyd taking out his recycling. Apparently he beaned a photographer with one of the blue bins.
The News chooses to forgo digging up random scandal hangers-on to look at the "money trail" angle of the Paterson affair. The headline, "TRYSTIN' IN THE WIND FOR LOVE," smacks of trying too hard to be puntastic. Staff writers Ben Lesser, Joe Mahoney and Greg Smith pored through Paterson's campaign records to see if he had used any funds for personal business, which is illegal, but according to the story, "the use of campaign money for personal expenses is extremely common because the law is rarely enforced." Paterson has admitted to using a campaign credit card for a hotel stay with a woman sometime between 2002 and 2006, as his personal card didn't work. One other thing to note: why tease Michael Daly's page-14 column on illegal guns underneath this story? Is this just a case of a quick layout change that wasn't complete? The illegal gun tease might worked better next to the coverage of the Sean Bell trial on page 7, especially since Bell is mentioned in Daly's subhead.
Meanwhile, Ashley Dupre continues to make news in both tabloids as her lawyers claim that her Girls Gone Wild video was taped before she turned 18. They're saying that if it gets released, it could be considered child porn. Reps for Girls Gone Wild say it's a stalling tactic. The Post also reports that Dupre could be testifying in cases against two other prostitution rings beyond the one that Eliot Spitzer used. Her name is on the witness list for the case against Clark Krimer, who was indicted for money-laundering and promoting prostitution.
