Who's That Girl? The Tabloids Meet "Kristen"

Posted by Tab Hunter at 10:00 AM, March 13, 2008

As reported yesterday, the New York Times found "Kristen," a runaway and aspiring singer named Ashley Alexandra Dupre (nee Ashley Youmans). Random aside: we were chatting with folks in a coffee shop this morning, and the general consensus was that "Ashley Alexandra Dupre" is a far better call-girl name than "Kristen."

Both the Post and the Daily News splash Dupre all over the front page. The News goes with "GOV'S GIRL," as its headline, while the Post continues its giddy righteous indignation with a banner "DISGRACE" and the subhed "And don't let the door hit you on the way out." The best headline of the day, however, comes from subway tab amNewYork which declares Spitzer "OUT WITH A BANG."

The Post's "Kristen" coverage features a full page of color and black-and-white photos from Dupre's MySpace page. (Does anyone else chuckle at the corporate synergy opportunities here, as News Corporation owns both the tabloid and the social networking site?) We also get another screenshot of the Emperor's Club website, which now must be the most famous escort service in America since Heidi Fleiss's downfall. Both papers quote liberally from the Times interview, as we're sure access to Dupre is severely limited right now. Friends from high school are coming out the woodwork to assure readers that Dupre was a nice girl, who was "never slutty" (a friend quoted in the Post) or tsk-tsking that she "was one of those girl" with a bad reputation (the Daily News).

News columnist Michael Daly has an insulting column in a condescending open letter format that infantilizes Dupre and "reassuringly" leads with "No, Ashley Alexandra Dupre, you are not a monster." It later includes the dismissive "Not that you aren't pretty. You just look much more like a young woman from the Jersey Shore than some five-diamond fantasy girl." Daly does note that Dupre should get some credit for not selling her story, but the digs at her background and profession come just a little too easy. The tabloid coverage of "Kristen" wavers between smug moral superiority and empathy with a dash of condescension.

good to see Jersey girls aren't doing anything to hurt their sparkling reputation.

A Girls Gone Wild DREAM come TRUE!!! Even Paris couldn’t have whipped THIS up!!!
You don't have to worry about payin rent any more "Kristen" cause in about a week you can afford your own Manhattan penthouse!!! You’re goin VIRAL BABY!…NY Magazine calls you “adorable” and they “kind of like her”.So see you on the cover of Playboy by Memorial Day (unless NY Mag beats them to it) ... music, book, TV, and movie deals are just around the corner. Better get a top agent & investment banker instead of a lawyer
And the rest of you young girls PAY ATTENTION! Being a real life hooker is gonna be MAINSTREAM after THIS!. Move over Lohan & Paris...This kid is goin places!
This Just In: By lunch time today “Kristen” has had over 3 million hits to her Myspace & 1 million downloads of her music. Looks like she ALREADY can buy that Manhattan penthouse.

No doubt about it, she's going to get her shot at the big time and mega bucks. Thank goodness we have a media that focuses on the important things facing us.

The only real question is will she be on the cover of Playboy or Penthouse first. Ashley will be worth millions in a few weeks.

From the pictures--what we can see---she is attractive. Knock out? No. Worth a grand an hour, I doubt it. But--she is goi8ng to get her shot at the big time--recording contract, Playboy, etc. Probably a book is already in the works. Good for her.

Not that it really matters but I do not think she weighs 105 lbs.

I don't want to moralize or anthing like that, but if she really wanted to sing and make music her career couldn't she have persevered a little and taken another job perhaps with less money but say a little more self respect. If she would have done that she could have gone on to American Idol. She doesn't present the best role model for young women but then neither does Spitzer as a politician, husband or father.

Something is obviously wrong in the way our culture understands or rather miscontrues SEX. We think we are open and understanding etc but we really have demonized sex resulting in people having very bizarre proclivities which are affecting the young.

I am gay and I like her.
