Harlem Residents to Proclaim Rezoning 'Ain't Over' on Saturday

Posted by Maria Luisa Tucker at 5:17 PM, April 25, 2008

“IT AIN’T OVER!” exclaims a flier by Voices of the Everyday People, a main opponent of the city’s plan to rezone 125th Street.

The group announced today that it would file a lawsuit against the city to stop the rezoning from moving forward, even after the city agreed to make significant revisions to the plan.

That compromise was reached April 15th when City Councilor Inez Dickens, who represents a large swath of Harlem, negotiated a community-benefits agreement that lowered maximum building heights from 29 to 19 stories and increased the affordable housing requirement.

Despite the deal, many still fear that the historic population of African-American residents and small business owners would be priced out of the neighborhood.

At an event scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, VOTE People promises to expose “the truth about Dickens ‘compromise’ and why we’re going to court.” They will meet at 201 Malcolm X Boulevard.

Vote People is headed by Craig Schley who is an opportunist funded by outside forces. He does not really care about Harlem and is just looking for face recognition (Mr. Wilhelmina Model) because he wants to run against Charlie Rangel. Charlie needs to go but this guy is not an appropriate replacement.
Please Harlem, bring forth a worthy candidate, cause this C Schley is NOT the one. Also, it is alleged that he has used people to get services and ideas by misrepresenting his intentions to them. He needed to to "learn" about Harlem. "Go away Schley" (He pronounces his name "slay") should be the slogan for his campaign. When are you going to pay for services rendered Craig??

Total losers. What? They are different than the rest of NY? This is all about race, not economics. They want to save all the hair braiding shops that employ 1 person, instead of a Macy's that will employ hundreds. Get real!

This is a response to so called " TrueHarlemite". Who are you, and what have you done for Harlem? I know Craig Schley, and I know what he's done is to initiate, and put into works, the only legal action that could actually put a stop to the rezoning of 125th St., and, the taking over of our community!!.If you are a "true Harlemite", you would not use every opportunity to denigrate an individual who is working for the benefit of the whole community, who is actually making a tangible effort to stop gentrification,ie., the ultimate destruction of Harlem. Your comments are divisive, and you appear to be one of the crabs in the barrel. I say that it's you who doesn't truly care about Harlem, but only cares about being divisive and negative. Do you work for the proponents of gentrification? Are you a plant "trueHarlemite"?
