New 'Phoenix Lights': A Hoax By Some Joker With Flares

Posted by Tony Ortega at 3:46 PM, April 23, 2008

You can bet UFO enthusiasts won’t let this go anytime soon, but this week’s sky lights over Phoenix that caught the interest of Matt Drudge turns out to be a hoax by some joker who attached flares to helium balloons.

Thankfully, quick reporting should keep this incident from blowing up into the fiasco of the so-called “Phoenix Lights” of 1997. But what I was predicting would happen as a result of this new sighting did come true: almost no one in the media seems able to harken back to 1997 and report the most basic facts of that famous event correctly.

Once again, reporters are repeating the same old bad information: that the military supposedly explained the 1997 event as “flares” even as others pointed out there’s no way flares would have been able to fly over the entire state in a vee formation.

Sheesh. When is anyone going to pay attention and get this right?

Listen up, people: There were TWO very different, very separate events over the night sky of Phoenix on March 13, 1997. At about 8:30, a vee formation of lights passed over the city and was seen by many people, including two of my colleagues at the Phoenix New Times. Earlier, the vee had passed over Prescott and would later travel over Tucson. Eyewitness reports showed that the vee had covered about 200 miles in a half hour – which means it was moving at 400 mph, despite the insistence of eyewitnesses who, relying on eyeballs to make estimates of the altitude of point sources of light in a night sky, believed it was just over their heads and traveling slowly. An amateur astronomer, Mitch Stanley, using a large Dobsonian telescope (which, as a Dobsonian builder myself, I can assure you, in the hands of an experienced user, is quite easy to move smoothly enough to observe high-altitude jet planes) saw that the vee was actually a formation of planes. He reported this to his mother, who was standing nearby.

Later that night, at about 10 pm, after many people had come out of their homes as word of the vee formation spread, a SECOND VERY UNRELATED event occurred: airplanes of the Maryland Air National Guard, in Arizona for winter training, dumped flares over the North Tac range southwest of Phoenix. This was the event that was seen and videotaped the most. The flares fell in an arc and disappeared behind the Estrella mountain range. Rather quickly, television reporters suggested that these were flares, but it took a while for my colleagues at Tucson Weekly and the Arizona Republic to get the military to confirm which group of planes was responsible.

Got that? When someone says flares explain the 1997 Phoenix Lights, they’re ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE SECOND EVENT.

So, when you hear people on the endless dishonest shows on networks like the Discovery Channel scoffing at “flares” explaining the famous Phoenix Lights vee formation, you’ll understand that they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

Hey Mike,
EEEEEEEEEEEzzzzzzzzzy does it. You are going to bust a vein. Just because THIS incident doesn't prove to be real, doesn't mean you can't still run around with your tin-foil hat on.

This is some Bullsh*t,So thousands of people didnt see anything,And the Air Force/Goverment didnt Scramble Jets Because They had Picked Up a Object/Unidentified Flying Objects on There Radar that where invadeing Restricted Military Airspace? Its Funny How Everybody Believes What The Goverment/News Channel's are Telling Them, I call these people SHEEP because the cant come to there own conclusion and Cant think for them self's,it wouldnt suprise me that this guy (Tony Ortega) was even there to witness the Ufo/Lights In the sky!!!

This has got to be one of the greatest lies that that the government has put out yet. If this was someone sending up dangerous flares over a city and into FAA controlled airspace, rest assured they would be frog marched in handcuffs to jail with world wide TV coverage. They would join all those crop circle makers who have caused millions of dollars in damage and have never been arrested.

My Bad, i thougth they where talking about about the 1997 UFO, not this weeks ligths over Phoenix

Posted by: Scott at April 23, 2008 10:28 PM

This is great!!! Now that we "know" that these light were flares, we can have the local firemen take this person to task for igniting flares during a time which could produce potential Fires. I am glad that he admittted to this!!! and hope he spends a goodly amount of time in jail.

Ok, you can fool some people, but I have eyes and seen something in the sky that was not red or a flare. The object I saw was in Georgia around 10pm at night. What I thought was a star brightened about 3 times it normal light and grew about 3 times its size. I thought it was an incoming shooting star but it moved to the east and grew smaller as it moved away, in space, not the earths atmosphere. I have seen many shooting stars and flares and know the difference. To pretend nothing happened is ignorant and foolish. Why not come clean about everything about Roswell and any other strange event so people can prepare for a potential alien encounter. Why keep people in the dark and wait until something happens. People grow up and demand answers. It might mean the survival of the human race. Either prepare or die.

Nice write-up Tony. These assuming sensationalists do more damage to serious Ufologists than debunkers. These were just road flares folks, the guy admitted to it, and its scientifically feasible to life half pound payloads with one and half foot diameter helium balloons.

I am interested about the amateur astronomers report of the "v" shaped craft, being aircraft in formation during the 1997 sighting. I've never heard that, happen to have a name? or any other confirmation?

Posted by: Chris at April 24, 2008 12:20 PM

I don't even believe this was a hoax. I think the guy was paid a ridiculous amount of money to lie. The footage I have seen of this craft looks just like the other "real" ones. The media's handling of this subject is is always going to be a joke, until an alien undeniably lands in Times Square.

for truth, look up:

"the disclosure project"
"planet x" or "nibiru"
"majesty twelve"
"crystal children"
"indigo children"

that should be enough to get inquiring minds started.

it is comforting to watch how the general public, as evident in these comments, is so much smarter and better informed than the moronic writer of these articles. if these were "flares" the guy would be arrested, as one responder correctly states. also, it could easily be shown that the flare story is bullshit simply by trying to reproduce flares and see if they look anything like the original video. the web site wantoknow is excellent.

there is hope. we just have to purge the media of shills like this guy. he'll probably try to get you to believe that bin laden blew up the world trade center with his miraculous pilots! and that oswald killed JFK, sirhan killed RFK, and james earl ray acted alone...

or maybe he is just plain dumb and incurious.

I farted.

Well congratulations. You're the first and only person, including media, government agencies and individual experts who somehow know what went on. Go sit on the business end of a sword.

Posted by: tony at April 24, 2008 5:00 PM

You said it Mike. It's so nice to have
someone truly in-the-know come along and
enlighten us. I feel so much better now!

Here's a point for debate. Tony, the man who filmed the latest Phoenix lights, made a specific statement on Fox News that it definitly was not a flare. He described the lights as being bright and steady, like those of a brake light on a car when someone steps on the brake pedal.

I saw the film shown on Fox News several times. My question to those that say they were nothing more than flares tied to a ballon, how did you train the ballons to stay in such a straight line, and then change formation into a cross and then an arrow.

To the man that has all the answers, explain this.
