Oh, Obama! Denouncing Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Posted by Heather Muse at 10:01 AM, April 30, 2008

Did we see this coming? Sure, there were hints on the horizon, but Barack Obama's speech denouncing the comments of his former confidante and pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright have sparked a feeding frenzy in today's papers. The Post goes for the punny headline "BARACK STABBER" on the front, while the Daily News prefers a simple "FURY!" Inside on page 4, the News makes the incident sound more like a celebrity divorce, with the hed, "I DON'T WANT YOU IN MY LIFE!"

There's an air of giddiness to some of the stories, as it seems like columnists and editors were holding back, waiting patiently for Obama to "come to his senses." The News answers the question, "Did Bam wait too long to cut ties?" with a resolute, "um, maybe," as experts hand-wring about whether this is too little, too late or if Obama successfully cut the dead weight. Columnist Michael Goodwin asks how Obama could listen to Wright's rhetoric for the past 20 years and not see through the reverend's "wackiness"? Goodwin likens Wright to the "crazy uncle Obama kept in the basement."

The Post, meanwhile, has all cylinders blasting on the Wright controversy in its opinion pages. Michelle Malkin refers to the speech as the "Jive-Talk Express" (Classy!), and Ralph Peters uses this as an opportunity to lament the "global victims' club." (Hey, did you know that people like to blame Israel for things?)

This is a big story, and it serves as a kind of litmus test for where one stands with one's racial politics. But, ultimately, it will come down to Obama supporters saying he did the right, brave thing and Clinton supporters and the Republicans finding a delightful way to exploit this revelation/gaffe/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. I want to see if this turns into another celebrity break-up story, complete with more of "Wright's side" in tomorrow's papers (which the Post has started with its front-page piece), with him portrayed as the jilted lover.

Obama is a duplicitous idiot....transparent as all hell....and hell bent for power without regard for even the closest people to him!! What about all those Obamii supporters who actually backed rev. Wright when Obama supported him??? Are they going to recant like he did???
Very funny, very interesting development. Let us all sit back and watch Obama make even more a fool of himself!

You need to know:

In 2007 when Sen. Obama announced his run for the presidency he consulted with Reverend Wright. Wright told him (Obama) that he may have to distance himself from the Rev. and perhaps the church during the race. Obama responded that he will do that if he has to.

This was a VERY calculated move by the Obama campaign and Rev. Wright to distance Obama from Wright's sermons and negative media attention BEFORE the general election so that Mccain cannot use this against him.
This is all an elaborate scheme (with Wright's wink-wink at the cameras) to put space between Obama and the reverend so that this does not dog him in the fall.
They are still as thick as theives, just not in the public's eye.

You Need To Know......YOU need to know that what you posted is FALSE INFO. Just because you Clintonians post something does not make it a fact. We can see your transparency. The actual fact are out there.

You Need To Know....YOU need to know that what you posted is FALSE INFO. You Clintonians think that just because you post something, that makes it a fact. Wishful thinking on your part and not true. The actual facts are our there...and somewhat in direct contrast to what you think. Prove me wrong if you can with where you got this so called info. I can prove you are incorrect.

there is nothing duplicitous about a man seeking spiritual council from someone whose politics he disagrees with. there is nothing suprising about the fact that Obama had a close, personal relationship with a man who perhaps over time has changed. would anyone blame Obama if it were his father making these kinds of statements? No. Obama did the right thing, first he tried to put Reverend Wright in context. And when Rev. Wright decided to grandstand he made a clear distinction between Wright's politics and his. Some might say he had a choice in which church to attend - and he may have, but there is also a woeful shortage of African American clergy who can engage an intellectual of Obama's caliber. So, we often find ourselves 'making do' with what we have. Taking what inspiration we can and leaving the rest. And I'm sure that this is exactly what has occurred. Please.

The state of the media today is disconcerting to say the least. The dissemination of half-truths and sound-bites taken out of context and then spun to match a corporate or populist agenda is the standard for today. The firebrand Reverend gave the U.S. a much deserved black eye for it's well documented imperialistic and Pyrrhic foreign policies, secret wars, and disregard for loss of life. The media takes fragments of his sermons in which some of the offensive comments were quotes(notably the "chickens coming home to roost" was quoted from statements made by the former Ambassador of Iraq Edward Peck)from other sources. In this day of chastizing candidates for not wearing flagpins and voting for the guy who you'd rather have a beer with, having anyone you associate with involved in any controversy is detrimental to say the least. It's only logical that a candidate try to separate himself from the shitstorm that is bound to occur. Obama opted to distance himself from the "offensive" statements and not the man himself. Now it's a race to pigpile on this "issue" du jour to see who can out do who in this sensationalistic drama driven age of hegemonical corporate media.
