Scenes from Anonymous' 'Scientology Reconnect' Picnic

“I am afraid to tell my father where I am today. I am afraid to tell him what I am doing.”

A member of “Anonymous,” who uses the online handle “PokeAnon,” spoke those words on Saturday before a crowd of fellow anti-Scientology activists who have gathered at the East Meadow of Central Park for “Operation Reconnect.” Organizers said they orchestrated the event to draw attention to the Church of Scientology’s practice of “disconnection,” a practice by which Church members are forced to distance themselves from critics of Scientology, even family members. Though the Church states that the practice is rare, critics say that is a lie: Scientologists are forced to disassociate from anyone who speaks out against the Church. PokeAnon’s dad is a Scientologist, and he is afraid that his actions as part of Anonymous will cost him his father forever.

“This is not some fanatical Scientology sect which has perverted the church’s doctrine. This vile policy, known as the disconnection policy, is inherent in their dogma,” he said. “And now, because I demand action against a criminal organization, I am afraid to speak to my father. So a disconnection of sorts has already begun.”

PokeAnon’s comments weighed heavily on the crowd on an otherwise lighthearted day. Only a few presumed Scientology defenders have shown up to monitor the event, and when they are spotted, Anons wave to them and offer pizza. Just outside of the park on Fifth Avenue, a few Anons hand out literature to those walking by, and most of the response is positive. One woman is hesitant until she is informed that the flyer is anti-Scientology.

“Oh, OK,” she said, accepting the flyer. “I don’t like Scientology.”

In fact, most of the negative response to Anonymous does not come from the Church’s defenders but from Central Park patrons who are annoyed that a bunch of kids have taken over the East Meadow and are making too much noise. “Scientology kills!” yells an enthusiastic protester using the name Jersey Mudkip to an elderly woman in a brown track suit. She stops and turns around, middle finger raised. “You probably can’t even get it up!” she replies.

But “Operation Reconnect” had a decidedly celebratory tone: Anons shared pizza and cake and danced as a deejay played on a spring day. Fanatical about wearing their masks at previous protests in front of Scientology centers, most Anons dispensed with them on Saturday. “It’s a lot more social,” said Jersey Mudkip. “It’s like people just wanted to blow off some steam together.”

And those masks don't ensure anonymity anyway. At the “Operation Party Hard” protest in March, one Anon, wearing a Groucho Marx disguise and a blue trench coat, was identified in an article as “Anonymous #3.” He said he has since been outed by the Church of Scientology as Michael Vitale, and no longer feels the need to wear a mask with his identity now public.

Vitale said it became clear that Scientology knew his real name during a spontaneous visit to the Church’s midtown headquarters two weeks ago. While he and a few other Anons handed out literature and offered free hugs to those walking near the church, several Scientologists came out of the building to observe them, and one began yelling Vitale’s name, he said.

He is not terribly concerned that anything will happen to him but Vitale said he has become extra cautious about his surroundings, and is even convinced he was followed home the day before the Central Park event.

“Unless they’re going to run me off the road, I don’t care. They can waste all the money on [private investigators] that they want,” said Vitale, who added that the Church’s public outing of himself helps prove Anonymous’ point regarding the harsh treatment the Church reserves for its critics. “I’m not worried, but I’ll be cautious. I know how these people operate. I know that we’re putting them through a lot right now."

Vitale said he smiled when his name was publicly revealed and shot back by asking the Scientology staffer if this meant he would be subject to the Church’s policy of “fair game,” through which Church officers harass and intimidate critics in an effort to shut them up. The Church of Scientology maintains that “fair game” is no longer in use. Vitale said the staff member who shouted his name repeated that claim to him when he asked. Vitale’s not buying it.

“If you say you don’t practice ‘fair game’ anymore,” said Vitale, “how the fuck do you know my name?”

As a Scientologist, I applaud these efforts to reach those who are stuck inside the rotten core of the "church."

I want to help expose the disinformation that the rotten part of my organization has been spreading. It is truly a shame that the good things about Scientology are being vastly overshadowed by the nefarious deeds of the Office of Special Affairs (OSA.)

As a Scientologist, I always believed that this Disconnection issue was a rare thing and quite deserved. However, after reading many stories of disconnection on the message boards www.forum.exscn.net and www.exscientologykids.com I have a much clearer picture of this abusive and controlling practice.

I have seen proof that the Church is fleecing people for profit and run as a pyramid scheme type of business, and I encourage everyone to contact the IRS, your representatives in Congress, and all other authorities and bring them your claims.

Now I clearly understand that what the spokespeople of the Church of Scientology are doing is inciting malice and prejudice. Make no mistake not all in Scientology are the same and some probably just don't know what they are doing. However, they are some pretty nasty characters in there, I have seen it.

Don't just believe me, see for yourself:

Now if only chicago would go to the lengths of accommodating these obviously peaceful protests.

Instead our lot is harassed by law enforcement and our first amendment rights are stifled by by city hall (i.e.- no amplified sound, no signs mounted on sticks, no standing, etc.) I doubly feel my constitutional rights have been cut down at the knee when i see how wonderful and successful our events have been in more 'lenient' cities.

Rex Hump says:

Have you now or ever been a Communist?

The ‘Reds Under The Bed’ era was an appalling era of American history when association with Communism was enough to ruin your life and end career. We tell ourselves that if we lived in a more enlightened time, something like this would never happen again. Nowadays the witch trials are no longer senate inquiries but take the form of shaping public opinion via on-line activism. I am not supporting The CoS nor am I supporting Anonymous. I find that people want to take the side of whatever cause is the most fashionable that week…. Along with Global Warming, The Anti War Movement, Animal Testing, Anti Globalism, Nike & Free Tibet, attacking the CoS was the perfect storm for fitting the Left Wing Activists zeitgeist. A quasi religion started by a Science Fiction hack with a questionable doctrine. That tax exemption status along the endless lawsuits to silence critics. Plus, an endless smoking gun fueled by enough brave individuals warning others about the dangers of CoS from their own experience.

The fact remains that Left Wing Activist groups pick and choose their battles, as well as forgetting history. A common gripe amongst Left Wing Activists is the belief that America stole a large portion of land from Mexico to increase the size of the United States. However, no one points the finger at the Spaniards for conquering Mexico prior. History has always had conquerors so siding with the defeated side means it’s just a temporary measure.

The Anonymous vs. CoS bun fight fits perfectly well into the pet causes adopted by the left activist groups previously mentioned. Any Left Wing Activist worth their salt would relish the chance to play cat and mouse with an organization that makes it their job to attack and sabotage it’s critics. It’s the risk matched with the trill makes it an attractive option.

One of the statements made by Anonymous is that the CoS have split up families due to the Fair Game or Disconnected status. No one seems to look at other organizations that do the same to their own flock for falling out with their own faith (The Amish & Jehovah Witnesses are prime candidates and who could forget the “I have no son” line from The Jazz Singer). The CoS seems to get lumped with bringing endless litigation against its critics but no one seems to make the same fuss when the Christian Scienctists do the same.

I could use other examples but it tends to get very “He Said & She Said” and frankly it’s boring on the eyes. The stories heard about the tactics of the Sea Org and CoS are cruel to comprehend and at the same time they are cherry picked the same way the CoS used Chelmsford Private Hospital to attack Psychiatrists. People and groups will always pick and choose what to tell you in order to prove their point. Knowing that the CoS is something to avoid is enough for me. Wanting to endanger your livelihood for Left Wing Activists glory isn’t exactly worth it either. I would be more worried about the followers of a faith that would cut off your head for not following their version of God or flying airplanes into buildings then I would be about then what Xenu had for dinner last week.

All I can say is that this is a long time in coming. I've been watching these CoS bastards since about 1984, when they moved into my college campus in force, preying off the young kids newly away from the protection of their families.

This is nothing but a cult of greed and power, like the Times article said. Overall, the press has failed us, and the government has completley failed us. Yet, I feel we are approaching a tipping point. How many lives need be destroyed?

WTF??!! There is absolutely no connection between anonymous and left or right wing politics-- that's the beauty of it-- it's the internet fighting back. For once, people without hidden motivations, bonding together for a just battle.

I'm about as conservative as it comes, and I support Anonymous implicitly in this battle. This comment appears to be an attempt at misleading the public.

Hey Rex Hump

You make some interesting points. But I don't think it is fair to discount these protests as purely fashionable. For some it may be to jump on the band-wagon, have a laugh, or for the buzz of the ride. For many though, the abuses of scientology have been very real. And for others, like myself, a few years ago I believe I could have gotten hooked. Living alone for the first time in a new country, feeling insecure, I remember looking at the 'free personality test'. If i had gone I imagine the church wouldn't have had a hard time suckering me in. Today is a very different story regardless of whether or not I would have heard about the abuses prior to being introduced to the church.

Everyone has vulnerable moments that is why it is important to stand up to those who will take advantage of people, especially if it is a large organisation. Especially if it is a large organisation that uses celebrities and other devices to sucker in as many people as possible. No, the CoS is not the only organisation that needs to be properly investigated. you named many in your comment, which is probably just the tip of the ice-berg. That does not tarnish anonymous' efforts in my mind. Ideally these activists will move on and highlight all the horrific abuses that are going on ignored in the world. History would tell us they won't, but that does not take away from what they have done.

Best a small effort than nothing at all.

Well, it is the basic secret behind Dianetics and auditing.

Ron discovered a human's bodily reactions when he passes an MU and he saw these reactions that are really as old as man is.

He took man's natural reactions and called it study tech.

He claimed God's natural laws as his own discoveries and scammed the whole world!!!
