The Death of Congestion Pricing: Who's To Blame?

Categories: Congestion Pricing, Tabloided

Sheldon Silver appears to be the villain of the death of congestion pricing (or, to use the Post's spelling, "Conge$tion Pricing." The News accuses the Assembly Speaker of "murder[ing the] mayor's congestion dream" on page one, and follows it up with a scathing column by Michael Daly about Silver's propensity to say "no" to votes that Silver does not support. The Post's Frederic U. Dicker's analysis piece notes that this vote "wasn't personal," unlike Silver's defeat of the West Side stadium three years ago. Both columnists note that Silver was looking out for his political career, as suburban Democrats in the Assembly opposed the plan.

In the straight coverage of the story, both papers highlight Bloomberg's "special kind of cowardice" statement, with the Post using the "c-word" and the News choosing to highlight the "It takes true leadership and courage to embrace new concepts and ideas and to be willing to try something…Unfortunately, both are lacking in the Assembly today" part of Hizzoner's statement.

The News, whose editorial board supported the plan, has much more coverage of the plan's death than the Post. This includes another editorial taking Silver to task for not putting the plan up to a vote. An interesting juxtaposition is the News' "man on the street" sidebar in which the "motorist," "straphanger" and "merchant" all opposed the plan, which just illustrates how divided the city is on the issue.

Obviously congestion pricing is a controversial issue, but at least one aspect of the controversy is the start of a dialogue on what this city needs to do to lessen its ecological footprint. Let's just see how long it actually lasts.

Swan, Transportation Editor, WWIB says:

Good riddance to lousy rubbish or, rather: why is it the Daily News & others show so little concern for the neighborhoods of New York with much worse environmental concerns than traffic below 60th St (or whatever) in Manhattan?

Where has the Daily News, for example, been on Bloomberg's many truck intensive development projects in Brooklyn, or the Bronx, or Queens, or Harlem or...

Oh wait! Their offices aren't in those places-- what a coincidence.

Richard says:

The entire city with all its politicians are not in touch with reality. Small business the life blood of any city or state would pay the price for all the waste incurred.GET RID OF THE USE AND ABUSE OF CITY OWNED VEHICLES AS WELL AS CITY WORKERS INCLUDING POLICE THAT BRING THEIR OWN VEHICLES TAKE UP PARKING SPACES AND ONLY USE THEM TO COMMUTE.OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK AT ALL THE PARKING SPOT THEY OCCUPY, WITH PERMITS

Casey says:

While there is a lot flailing about that Silver "denied" democracy, the simple fact is that other than the media elite and a few members of Transportation Alternatives, most (yes, a majority) of people were against this. Silver just did his job. This attempt was made from the top down, with Bloomy, etc spending a lot of money to make it work. The Daily News and The NY Times were total propaganda pieces for Congestion Taxing, in news and editorial articles.

We don't have european transportation. The money that would have come in would be eaten by the MTA and the Second ave subway would still remain unbuilt.

Thank you, Sheldon Silver, for standing up for the non-media elite, those of us who do not live on Park Avenue, and those of us who would pay a new tax for roads and highways we paid for years ago.

When the A train goes over the GWB all the way to Paterson, NJ (The NJ towns would die first), when the LIRR uses all the rights of way that are currently disused for rail, when Northern NJ rebuilds its passenger rail, and when the Westchester communities served by Metro North actually provide non resident parking, will congestion pricing be possible.

What we would have received would be none of the above, but a guaranteed tax, the exact same traffic conditions, and as a bonus, the Bush Administration would get to do a Demonstration Project for real time tracking of Law Abiding citizens-a point which has escaped all of the proponents of this scheme.

Andrea says:

The mayor would have us think that ordinary New Yorkers--the life blood of this city--are in favor of the plan. Well, many of us are not! We care deeply about quality of life and the environment, but congestion pricing is a one-size-fits-all "solution" to a city that is anything but one-size-fits-all. Further, the burden will be on those who can least afford it. There are alternatives. What about truck deliveries taking place at night? What about signal-coordinated pedestrian street crossings? Many good suggestions have been offered, but the Mayor would strong-arm and guilt trip us into having his way. I don't always agree with Mr. Silver, but I must defend him on this one!

John says:

Clock ran out on congestion pricing but there's still time to say no to Shell Broadwater! Governor David Paterson is just two days away from deciding on a 1.4 square mile, Yankee Stadium sized imported gas facility smack in the middle of Long Island Sound. What's at stake is nothing less than the future of New York City's energy policy. New York City is about to switch from abundant US and Canadian natural gas to imported natural gas from Libya (anyone remember Pan Am Flight 103?).

Find out more, and find out what you can do to stop it:

john says:

the corporate media wanted manhattan to become a kind of venice allowing only the grey poupon set and their suv's in the streets. To propose this under the guise of making manhattan greener is comical. The soylant-green organically aware crowd gave us boy-george with Nader as their candidate. Had this become law there would have been numerous litigations since it has never been the fiduciary responsibility of the boroughs to maintain the MTA.

Manhattan Downtowner says:

Bloomberg: Clean house first, do your homework.

The congestion tax bill was an ill-prepared insult to Assembly dems and Silver, and they rightfully did not give it respect.

Clean house: Stop turning a blind eye and eliminate parking permit abuse first. NYC has lost $322-million in parking meter revenue in the 7 years Bloomberg has been office [Schaller Consulting, 2006: NYC loses $46-million/year due to governement sector commuters illegally parked on parking meters]. You do know that the NYPD and Fire Dept unions wanted "exemptions" from congestion taxing, don't you, Mr. Bloomberg?

George says:

Thank You Mr. Silver. I begged you to kill it when it first came up and gave you alternative plans that would be great for the local economy. Lets see if those can get put in place.

Whether you did because of me or not. Way to go. I'm also glad you helped kill the West Side Stadium which was just as much , if not more, a stupid idea, and I told Juliani that. Imagine congestion pricing and the stadium. War on theUpper West Side!
