The Impending Sean Bell Verdict

By Heather Muse, Thursday, Apr. 24 2008 @ 11:15AM

Tomorrow morning, Queens Supreme Court Justice Arthur Cooperman will render his verdict in the Sean Bell "50 Shots" trial. The NYPD has mobilized and will not allow any officers to have time off during the next four days in case of widespread protest regarding Cooperman's decision. The Post frames the news as "Riot fears cancel all cop leave," while Daily News columnist Errol Louis proclaims, "the smart money says the cops will get little more than a slow day in the sun and maybe a little overtime—no matter what the verdicts are." Louis then quotes Councilman Leroy Comrie, who says that the riot fears are being stoked by the media.
Comrie may have a point: The Post story is all "doom and gloom," mentioning the demonstrations in the wake of the 2000 Amadou Diallo verdict. Louis offers some praise for Rev. Al Sharpton, who has stayed away from the courthouse and called for peace. Louis writes the city "should also be grateful to a political movement that, like its leaders, has changed and grown wiser over the years" if peace remains. Of course, a headline on the opposite page of Louis's column declares, "If cops get off, it's Emmett Till again, sez Sharpton."

The bigger story is the Daily News's exclusive interview with Sean Bell's parents, who rip into Detective Michael Oliver, one of the officers who shot Bell.

William Bell excoriates Oliver for his perceived lack of remorse: "He'd come in with arrogance, like he just didn't care. Like, 'So what, I killed somebody, it don't mean nothing,' Like it's a joke," he told the paper. "He showed no remorse. None whatsoever."

The picture painted of Oliver is that of an arrogant hothead. The News describes him as having a "wild streak" and as someone who "infuriated Bell's parents—and even some of his own supporters—by noshing on a $4,200 meal at celebrity eatery Nello's the day after the indictment." A large picture of a slightly smirking Oliver accompanies the piece, and the front-page headline: "OLIVER, YOU'VE NO SHAME" gets the point across that this is not a popular guy in certain circles.

The Post goes with the "law-and-order" approach with its "riot fears" article and a small piece on how Bell's fiancée, Nicole Paultre-Bell met with Mayor Bloomberg at City Hall today. Bloomberg told Bell he plans to "make things better" in the wake of the shooting. The News, meanwhile, concentrates on the victims' side, showing the anguish of Bell's parents and the perceived arrogance of the perpetrators.

Harvey Wyche says:

The verdict is easy to predict. It will be a compromise to hopefully appease both sides. Give only one officer the lowest form of negligent homicide with no jail time; just five years probation and lost of job. However, the PBA/DEA will see to it the officer gets a better law enforcement job somewhere in the United States making much more money. However, the Bell family is not suppose to know this. The family will still scream that this is the worst travesty of justice the city has ever seen, but Bloomberg will say its all fair under our judical system since we live in a country of laws and all the fact were carefully evaluated and ruled upon legally by an extremely competent and impartial judge. He will also order his police commisioner to implement intense police tactical firearms training so incidents like this will never happen again. Now go home and forget about this case until the next one happens in the near future, but perhaps under a new mayor.

Sean Bell's girlfriend has no shame. It is clear that all she wants is a lot of money. That way she can buy a house, a Hummer and get a new husband.
And what does Al Sharpton has to do with all this? Is he hitting on Sean Bell's girlfriend?

You know how this is going to turn out...The cop who fired the most bullets will receive the most punishment..He will probrably not get convicted of the top count though.Unfortunately, whenever a cop kills someone..The "we thought he had a gun" argument always manages to slip them through.Especially in places like N.Y.,L.A.,etc..It will happen again. However,it must happen to someone who is somewhat politically connected for it to be brought to a halt.As long as it's some inner city black man..It will eventually be buried. If the men that N.Y.P.D. have killed over the years(Amadou Diallo,Patrick Dorismond,Sean Bell)were sons of Senators,Governors or even someone like Bill Gates.Things would be much different..

OMG...WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT JIN REI, SEAN BELL'S GIRLFRIEND HAS NO SHAME!!! YOU MUST BE JOKING! THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH AMERICANS...SO STUPID, THAT'S WHY THE REST OF THE WORLD IS PASSING YA'LL. SHE HAS TWO OF HIS KIDS, SO NOW, SHE'S A SINGLE MOTHER STATISTIC! WE HAVEN'T SEEN HER PROTESTING OR EVEN IN THE MEDIA AS MUCH AS SHE SHOULD, NOT ONLY THAT, THESE COPS NEED TO PAY FOR WHAT THEY DID. IT WAS NONE OTHER THAN EXCESSIVE FORCE...50 BULLETS!!! I'VE EVEN SEEN A FILM WHERE BULLETS FLEW INTO THE AIR TRAIN STATION ABOVE THE KALUA CLUB WHERE INNOCENT BYSTANDERS WERE STANDING!!!PLUS, IF THE UNDERCOVER WERE IN THE BAR, UHUMMM, DID THEY DRINK? IF YOU CAN'T DRIVE AFTER YOU DRINK, DAMN, YOU SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO EVEN HANDLE A GUN! I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE HAVE RIOTS WHEN JUSTICE IS DIMINISHED TO ANYTHING LESS THAN DUE RETRIBUTION, AS WOULD BE THE CASE IF THESE COPS/ KILLERS ARE ALLOWED TO WALK!!!

Wait for the verdict. The evidence has been presented now we have to wait. I have no idea why anyone would still listen to that loser al sharpton. All he wants is the headlines when a case involving blacks occurs. He sets race relations back 20 years and still these idiots listen to him. Its really quite a shame. They don't want justice, they want vengeance.

The Bell family has indeed been patient and I feel for their loss. It's the thugs that Sean hung out with that night (himself included) that started the string of events, and they should be tried as well as the officers who reacted to the "Bell party"'s actions. It was a tragic event, but if the cops are held accountable, so should those whose actions caused that 1st cop to fire in the first place.

We demand that Police Officers go
where Angels fear to tread, to police
the most violent, unstable areas
of NYC and when they make a tragic
mistake, too many want to crucify
the cop.

Unfortunately, minority males,
make up the bulk of the street crime,
in any major USA city, and NYC is
no exception.

I don't believe that any of those
Police Officers should go to prison
for making an honest mistake.

Sean Bell was no choirboy.

"There is nothing more painful to me ... than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.:

Mcfly says:

The truth is nothing is going to change unless you are ready to riot and die for it. The reason why the Jewish communities in Brooklyn and all over nyc is getting respect because the people is willing to die for what they believe in. Unfortunately African Americans talk the talk but when it comes to the moment of truth they always back down and look to the people next to them to see if they are going to make the first move and it's sad to say but I feel that Sean Bell is just another innocent person who is not going to be justified, and forgotten until someone from another black family gets killed and the cycle will repeat itself. The main thing is to prevent it from happening again through setting an example when the police comes with their guns don't back down, it's sad again that African americans is so quick to fight and kill each other in the communities but not willing to fight the system that is unfair. I wish a change will come like the song by Sam Cooke !

The police were not wrong... lets not forget about the 3000 pound weapon Bell was trying to drive into these officers...
No cop goes to work wanting to kill someone and then have their lives turned upside down by the media and the lawyers and that idiot Sharpton.
Listen people .. 50 bullets.. come out out of 4 guns... in 2 seconds... especially when its dark, your under severe stress, your thinking that fellow officers are being shot at... (officers that you spend 12 hours a day with.. and know about as good or better than anyone in your family...) and visions of never seeing your family again are passing through your head. All this in just a few seconds....
It is a very tough job.... its the only job that requires a human being to make split second decisions of such magnitude. Decisions that can affect them so for the rest of their lives.
Trust me people.... these officers will not rest well for the rest of their lives because they have to live with this outcome... the outcome of taking a life....
The Police know that one day the decision of using a gun might have to be made ... but officers never go to work wishing it.
Police officers are majorily good people from good families that work hard everyday... It is time that we acknowledge this fact. I can not stand by while this city glorifies drug dealers and pimps but forgets the cop who is educated and hard working and family and community oriented.
The people of this city wake up and go about their lives freely and unbothered because of the freedoms police officers protect everyday.

For you folks who seems to think Sean Bell repeatedly rammed into the van to try to "kill" the people in the van or something, here is the original way the story was reported right after the incident:

"One undercover cop stayed at the club and the other followed the men as they got into Bell's car on Liverpool St. Bell drove forward, brushing that officer before slamming into the unmarked police van as it rounded the corner, Kelly said."

Interesting how this has evolved into ramming the van over and over.

aW DUDE to read some of these comments sickens me who's a choir boy or not. These cops were there on a prostitution sting and ended up killing someone who could has just as easily been one of them off duty. They played super cop and dropped the ball. Drunk machismo outside a club did not warrant all of that. For the people that think that because you got in trouble as a kid or a very young man you should be persecuted the rest of your life and deserve brutality I wish the same thing on the white sons you covet and see if you will be so quick to issue approval
when their live are taken. JERKS
