Oh, College: The NYU Yankee Stadium "Streaker"

Posted by Heather Muse at 9:14 AM, May 15, 2008

There's always that one guy. You know: the "life of the party" guy who always has a crazy scheme? Well, at NYU's graduation yesterday, That Guy was William Lopez, a newly-minted BFA who decided to drop trou and run the bases at Yankee Stadium after the school's graduation ceremony. But now, Lopez is going to learn a lesson they don't teach you in college, but probably should: what happens when you do something stupid and the media pick up on it.

It seems like a lighthearted, "fun" story, but the Daily News takes it a step further, publishing photos of Lopez from "his Web page," which one assumes is either a MySpace or Facebook profile. We get to see Lopez performing with his band and a photo of him sitting on a bed, bottle of booze in his hand, next to a stuffed dinosaur. Something tells me that Gawker is going to have a field day with this guy and his sense of entitlement. Despite warnings from NYU brass that no one under any circumstances should run on the field, Lopez thinks he's the exception:

"A lot of people came up to me outside the Stadium, parents even, saying it was their favorite part of the day…It was an honor to run on that field."

Let's contrast this with what NYU spokesman John Beckman told the Post:

"[T]he Yankees were very gracious hosts and we were grateful to be allowed to be there, and it is always disappointing to us when one member of our community thinks there's a special set of rules for him or her."

Yeah, Lopez would have totally That Guy jumping in the fountain after graduation had the ceremony been held in its usual venue of Washington Square Park.

(Full disclosure: I am an NYU alum and teach there. I did not jump in the fountain at graduation.)

I am so upset at this guy. I am a graduate at NYU this year, and I am so glad I did not attend the All University Commencement because Steinhardt was enough for me.

This guy was only thinking of himself and the media is focusing on this idiot instead of the accomplishments of I and other graduates who work their ass off for their degrees.

I was there and it was a fun site to see. It did not take away from anyone else's accomplishments and gave everyone a laugh. Cheers Will!

Go, Will, go!

it was awesome. And perfectly timed. My graduation was so much better thanks to Mr. Lopez!

The graduation ceremony was a joke. I can't believe that anybody could express outrage about this kid, who clearly rules, interrupting the ceremony, but fail to be offended by the fact that commencement felt like one big advertisement for NYU. Most of the focus was not on the caliber of the graduates, but the caliber of the institution. John Sexton even made a few cute little "jokes" about tuition. They went over surprisingly well, considering most of the people in the crowd had taken on tens of thousands of dollars of debt in order to pay that tuition.
This fellow's dash for the plate was the highlight of the ceremony for me. I only wish he'd made it!

Oh my dear God no. Please don't tell me that Yankee Stadium has been defiled by yet another average person taking the opportunity that no huge machine would ever allow anyway to have some fun. NYU executive stuffcoats thought a stern warning would keep young, jubilant graduates in check? It was just such an honor and privilege to be in Yankee Stadium? NYU has no long history of its own? The Yankee organization was priviledged to have NYU, the way I see it. One is no better than the other. It's the last time a graduating class will sit in its seats adorned with cap and gown. Did the Yankee organization have some fun by offering to allow each graduate the opportunity to walk the bases and receive their diploma at home plate? Sure, I suppose it sounds stupid, but wouldn't it have been cool? The ultimate memory? Nobody thinks about fun anymore. Stay the hell off the grass. We don't want to have to rake the dirt again, if you don't mind. This is Yankee stadium, and you NYU graduates who are about to take on the world are lucky to be here, and don't you forget it. I just hope that the police took the opportunity to tackle that party-pooper to the ground, wrench his arm around his back half way out of its socket, stick their knee solidly between his shoulder blades, jerk his head up and back with a sizable handful of hair, and teach him a lesson he won't soon forget. For those whose graduation ceremony was ruined, I remained so very humored by your feelings. Hey, Nyah, the "accomplishments of I and other graduates"? You mean like learning English skills? Congrats, all you other grads. Sounds like your commencement was a whole lot more memorable than mine.

You go Will, I hope the Yankees invite you back to throw out the first pitch next season---there was more cheering for you than for any game so far this season. And the NYU administrators, I hope you went home and enjoyed that Will did what you could not---make for a memorable graduation. You're the best! Film school grad----you're on your way.

WILL YOU ARE THE MAN
GRADUATION WAS SOO BORING I WAS UPSET THAT I SPENT 200,000 PLUS DOLLARS AT NYU JUST TO HAVE A LONG AND VERY UNINTERESTING GRADUATION. YOU MADE IT MEMORABLE FOR YEARS TO COME AND I APPRECIATE THAT. CONGRATS TO THE REST OF THE CLASS OF 08'. EXCEPT NYU LAW- THOSE GUYS WERE PRETTY STIFF.

I'm an NYU undergrad and I have to say that I am so proud of the caliber of individual that my school has produced. After four years of working on his degree, he and every other graduate out there had every right to celebrate. It was their day. Had they not been graduating, there would have been no ceremony. The ceremony was for them. To honor their achievements, acknowledge their sacrifices, and make it all worth while. And I'm sure that Will made it that much more worth while. Congrats class of '08 by the way!

How could you NOT have jumped in the fountain at graduation??? I'm an alum, and I can tell you at my graduation a ton of people jumped in the fountain. It's a rite of passage!!!

I think this is disappointing for all the NYU graduates this year (myself included). I really hope they are able to punish him in some way. He took something away from all of us that day. No one is acknowledging the people who graduated or our accomplishments. Instead, this idiot is given all the attention. What a shame.

"accomplishments of I"? Ridiculously bad English.

So what happened to this guy? Did he get jail time? I hope so. What a loser. Can't make it on his own decides to do a publicity stunt. That's so rude. No one runs onto the field, no one. What an idiot.
