The Long Goodbye to Camelot: Ted Kennedy's Brain Tumor

By Heather Muse, Wednesday, May. 21 2008 @ 10:15AM

Categories:

When it was announced yesterday that Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor, the 24-hour news networks went into overdrive. CNN had wall-to-wall coverage of the announcement, including live statements from Kennedy's choked-up Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisles. As the network provided background noise to my day, I noticed that the coverage was not of a man who was sick, but of one who was already dead. (Seriously, there were times yesterday when the CNN anchor reminded viewers that Kennedy is actually alive.) Ted Kennedy is attending his own funeral, which is taking place in the media spotlight.

The Post comes right out and says it on the front page: "TED IS DYING" blares the banner hed, with "Kennedy has brain cancer" underlined in red above. The Post does get sympathy points for referring to Kennedy's upcoming battle as "brave," but quickly returns to its sordid, sensational ways by including a file photo of the senator's car at Chappaquiddick and using that 1969 car wreck controversy as part of the lead on the main story. (The gist: Kennedy has survived a plane crash, the Chappaquiddick incident and the assassination of his two brothers, but he's now in the fight for his life.) The other Kennedy story concentrates on the specifics of the senator's illness: explain what kind of brain tumor it is (malignant glioma), the treatment (chemotherapy and radiation, this kind of cancer is too insidious to operate on) and Kennedy's spirits, ("good and full of energy," according to a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital, where Kennedy has been staying since Saturday). Accompanying the piece is a picture of Kennedy in his hospital room, smiling and surrounded by family.

The Daily News forgoes highlighting the more controversial aspects of Kennedy's past and instead concentrates on the "FIGHT OF HIS LIFE," devoting the entire front page to the news, complete with picture of Kennedy and his wife holding hands in the hospital. The two stories in the front of the paper deal with the details of the discovery of the tumor and a round-up of reaction to the news around Capitol Hill. Both papers include editorials that say pretty much the same thing: No matter how you feel about the man's politics, you can admire all that he's done in his tenure in public service (Kennedy has served the second-longest term in the Senate, behind Sen. Robert Byrd) and wish him well during this tough time.

If you look at the media coverage further up I-95, the Boston Herald announces, "WE'RE WITH YOU, TED" with a smiling photo of the senator. In the Bay State, this really is a "family" issue. Kennedy might as well be referred to as "Uncle Teddy" in some parts of Boston.

The coverage is reminiscent of when news of Patrick Swayze's pancreatic cancer broke in March. The stories were incredibly obit-like. (For the record, two-plus months later, Swayze is still alive and kicking.) Granted, the grim prognosis for an elder statesman is more newsworthy than that of a B-list movie actor, but there still is that shock of "what a shame."

The bigger narrative of when Kennedy shuffles off this mortal coil is the end of "Camelot," that idyllic image of John, Bobby, Teddy and the rest of Kennedy clan playing touch football at the family's Hyannisport compound, of Jackie Kennedy's perfect pillbox hats and little JFK Jr. saluting his father's casket as it rolls by. This is the end of an era in American politics and history, despite how many of the next generation of the family are in public service. Ted Kennedy is the last tie to Camelot and has been the family's patriarch for 40 years. The nostalgia for that "simpler time" will come back full force. The flip side is that of the "Kennedy Curse," which the Post alludes to in its coverage.

One thing is for certain: obituary writers have the grim task of updating Kennedy's file, "just in case." The "Camelot" pitches are probably flying around the newsroom.

What is the difference in him and Teddy? NONE in Gods eyes. Now he will have to face her and God. Good luck with that one you fat pig POS! You are the picture of gluttony. A modern day Henry VIII. Personally, this is someone that should have been held responsible a long time ago for his actions AND INACTIONS. Maybe the doctor can begin brain surgery on Ted ...only to walk away (with him on the table) and take a nap, go on vacation before the doctor completes the surgery. Only a Kennedy (and years ago) could get away with this. Although, the Kennedy's have numerous other skeltons in their closets regarding murders of young girls. My question is.."GOD...WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG TO BEAR SENTENCE ON THE GUILTY!"

Laurie Dobson says:

Senator Edward Kennedy has been reputed to have fallen victim to a brain tumor after suffering a seizure last week. He will find that there is excellent medical support for his condition in the medical field, particularly at Dana Farber, where my husband, Michael Dobson, is receiving ongoing care for his GBM tumor.

However, Senator Kennedy will also find that this field of medicine has unfortunately been recently hit with a scourge: the funding research programs are due to be cut in half this year. How will we cure a disease, which has a ‘blood-brain’ barrier and has no known cure on the horizon?

The answer: a massive cancer research effort, on the scale of the moon mission, to wipe out cancer in ten years. This is the plan I have called for: DOBSON’S CALL FOR WORLDWIDE WAR ON CANCER, on February 17:
http://www.dobsonforsenate.com/Dobson_for_Senate/Blog/Entries/2008/2/17_DOBSON%E2%80%99S_CALL_FOR_WORLDWIDE_WAR_ON_CANCER.html

We can not only wipe out cancer, save untold numbers of lives, but we can jumpstart the world economy with medical research dividends. Just as the moon mission return $34. dollars in new research benefits for every dollar invested under JFK, we can use this tragic situation to call for a new mission: wiping out cancer.

Senator, the best of luck to you. Please use this adversity as sweetly as may be possible, and help America redeem its lost honor by curing cancer.

I feel nothing but sympathy for the human condemned to die this way, and sorrow for his family as they deal with his suffering. The Kennedy family has suffered greatly and the spiteful words resounding here are a detriment to their service and sacrifice. Whatever Mr. Kennedy may or may not in his private live, he has served his country very well and every single person crying out against him has lived a better life from his efforts and those of his family and are the epitome of ungrateful and full of spite for a man, who has championed the less fortunate. My thoughts and hopes for him and his family join the majority of the Nation.

I'm sorry that Teddy Kennedy has brain cancer.

I'm more sorry for the poor girl he let suffocate to death while he ran away and tried to get his hired lawyers and family members to take the blame.

Mary Jo Kopechne and Chappaquiddick was THE defining moment in Teddy's life, and as usual, he demonstrated his complete inability to take responsibility for what he did, and tried to lie his way out of it.

Yes, I'm sorry he's got a brain tumor and will suffer a horrific death. But I'm more sorry for the woman he killed and that he got away with it.

At least he got away with it up to now. It won't be much longer before he'll have to account for it to the REAL judge.

Nihil says:

This sort of disease is not something you wish on anyone, and I wish him and his family well. Having said that, the idea that today's politicians are "servants" sacrificing on our behalf is misguided and naive. Most of them are in it for the power and prominence and do everything to preserve it. In that regard, Sen. Kennedy is one of the worst.

In the grand scheme of things, as sordid as it sounds, America will be a better place when he's out of office.

It's strange but not a surprise that so many so-called religious people have written some of the most vicious posts here. Ted Kennedy could have spent his life doing absolutely nothing, but decided to devote it to public service. A list of his accomplishments here would be far too long. He is an amazing, compassionate man with a true liberal philosophy. Most of you don't even realize how much he's done to make YOUR lives better. Have you ever looked at his record? And by the way, Nihil, Sakara and GoodRiddance, what have you done with your lives lately that's of any importance or is hate what makes you tick?

Ted Kennedy has suffered from his mistakes maybe not the way he should have but he has suffered in more ways than we all know. He has made mistakes but then again so have we all, maybe not as drastic as he did but we all have made mistakes. Ted Kennedy has seen 3 of his brothers die, 2 very publicly and over and over again since they happened and has watched many horrible things happen to his family and has to be the strong one for the rest of his family. He is a great Senator and has done so much for our country. To be disrespectful to him now when he is sick, is just wrong. The Bible says, "do unto others has you would have them do unto you". So for those that said cruel remarks about the Senator I guess you like it when people talk negatively about you. Anyhow, I wish him the very best and know that the country is supporting him (for the most part).

To trash people who have different views than you do and to make hateful statements about a good human being who has a family that love him? As much as I dislike W and his cronies, I would not spout such hate or wish such atrocities on any of them. The Senator made a poor choice under extremely traumatic circumstances; that doesn't spell murder in my book. And who said she was pregnant. That was negated long ago. I pray that Ted beats all of the odds and lives a lot longer than some of you jerks think he will. America and the world need him!

JFK and Ed before that, your posts just reflect your complete ignorance. Ted didn't pick up Mary Jo in a bar; she was perfectly willing to be with him and his group who were having a party on the island. Obviously she was willing to leave with him too. The hateful comments about a good man who has done more for humanity than the likes of everyone here and many others, make me feel sick and confirm my belief that the world is just on a downward spiral that will end who knows where. Ahd you idiot, JFK, an accident is never murder. Murder is deliberate and premeditated, not a death that occurs because of an accident. Your comments really show your mentality.

Ted was Joe Kennedy's favorite son after Joe Jr. died but he fell short of the intelligence Jack and Bobby had. He was definitely the hardest working of his sons because to make up for his intellectual ineptitude he was forced to become a real politician - getting out and actually growing to love meeting people which neither Jack nor Bob had the stomach for. He worked hard and as a result played hard at every chance..which led to his bungled political career. Only his loving father's forgiveness and the stupidity of his state's voters gave him the chance to forever screw America out of the destiny it deserved for saving most of the world from beasts like Hitler, countrys like Russia, and Fascism like the so-called "religion" of Islam.
Liberals die hard and do as much damage as they can before croaking.
But, he's a chip off the old block -
Joe Sr. backed Hitler prior to WWII...
Ted has always backed the Islamo-Fascist scourge.

I hope the persons making the cold, calculated remarks never have an accident. I am sure they have never made a mistake. NOT!!!!!!! The man is dead. God will judge him. I hope when you die God doesn't judge you as harsh for your cold heart as you have another human being. Taking joy in a family's grief is disgusting. Bush and Cheney should get hold of you with waterboarding and torture! No, I would not wish that torture on anyone. All I can say is,"God have mercy on you". When someone close to you dies, I hope your hateful words come back to haunt you.
