Vito, Vito, Vito: Fossella's "Wild Night" Before His DWI Arrest

Posted by Heather Muse at 11:15 AM, May 6, 2008

The Vito Fossella DWI scandal just keeps getting juicier and juicier. The Daily News reports the congressman and his buddy got kicked out of a Washington, D.C., bar hours before Fossella's arrest. Waiters at the Logan Tavern tell the paper that both men were incapable of driving and that at one point, Fossella's pal—known only as "Brian"—passed out in front of the men's room.

This scoop comes hot on the heels of both tabs trying to figure out more about the mysterious "friend" who sprung Fossella from jail. She's identified as Lt. Col. Laura Fay, a retired Air Force officer. (The News boasted an "exclusive picture" of her yesterday.) Both papers report that Fay and Fossella attended an Air Force-sponsored dinner back in 2003 that Fossella's wife, Mary Pat, was absent from.

The juiciest bit from the tabloids today comes in the form of pure speculation and innuendo. Fay has a 3-year-old daughter and is a single mom. The Post quotes a "relative" of Fay's who says the woman was "vague" about who fathered the child. Both papers then quote the response from Fossella's PR flack about whether he is the father: "That is a demeaning and highly inappropriate question that does not deserve an answer." The Post describes Susan Del Percio as a "high-priced public-relations crisis consultant," the implication here being, "high-priced=could it be true?" The News describes her as someone who brought in for "damage control."

News columnist Michael Daly writes an outraged column on how lucky Fossella is that he didn't hurt anyone, comparing the incident to a car accident his daughter was in over the weekend. Daly admits that he himself has driven under the influence, but that he has since learned the error of his ways. He then argues that the congressman should be taking public transportation from now on.

Below is what Vito said in voting for the motion to begin the impeachment inquiry of Bill Clinton:
Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.):
. . . Earlier today, one of my colleagues said that this would be the most divisive issue since the Vietnam War. While he may believe that to be true, I take strong exception with that, and I'll tell you why. Men and women were sent overseas like every other war or military conflict since our nation's birth, to defend the rule of law, the notions of personal freedom and individual liberty.

And in the case before us today, we're asking a simple question: "Did the president of the United States violate any of those rules of law that we cherish and that so many men and women have died for and are willing to die for at every point around the globe?"
I don't want to be here today, like so many of my colleagues. But the generations of Americans yet unborn must look back on this day in this matter, in this situation, and see this as our finest hour. . . . Reluctantly, I am here. I proudly, though, support this resolution.

The tidbit that's caught my attention is from yesterday's Staten Island Advance, buried in an article titled "Vito still shaking money tree."

Per the police report, when stopped, Vito told the officer that he was on the way "to Grimm St." because his daughter needed to go to the hospital.

My first reaction to this, when the street wasn't mentioned, was that it was just a particularly sleazy lie from a guy with such a Sharper (Family Values) Image.

But in vino veritas. Laura Fay, notes the story, lives on Grimm Drive. Yeah, maybe he made up the stuff about the hospital, but chances are, the part about visiting his daughter is true.

Just another classic example of how politicians know how to lie, even if the lie is dumb. Why didn't the bar call them a cab, even though they were bounced out, don't they still have a responsibility for the safety of the customer? We all learn the error of our ways after a DWI... Lt. Col. Laura Fay should not have bailed him out, he needs to learn his lesson the hard way.

I am appreciating maureen dowd more and more. in todays world woman really dont need men, they need the sperm and thats it. fay has humped her way thru life and probably quite happily sees no reason to keep the sperm donors around after she grows bored. and considering what my gender produces, do ya wonder why.

Are all of these "Family Values" men and women sex fiends?

But You have to admit, if you are going to pick someone to commit adultery with, Laura Fay is looking pretty scrumptious.

I know Laura and this is shocking news, i was a previous in law of hers from a previous marriage. She is very charming and I could see how that could get her into trouble. Very sad situation.

It is important to contact the court in Alexandria to help ensure that Vito does his five days in jail (assuming he is found guilty of DWI at twice the legal limit). Serving time will help reintroduce him to the reality that has been so lacking in his life. Vito, next time don't blow so hard against contraceptives, failing families, Bill Clinton, or the permissive society. Enjoy your stay.
