Former Senator Gravel Backs NYC 9/11 Commission

After two presidential runs in one year, former Senator Mike Gravel is setting his sites on New York City politics, specifically a grassroots effort to have New York City citizens vote to establish a new September 11th investigation commission.

The petition drive needs at least 30,000 residents to give their signatures in order to place a potential amendment to the city charter on the November ballot. The former Alaska senator and lifelong political loose cannon threw his weight behind the effort to establish a second, privately funded investigation into the events of September 11th, in response to what he called a fatally flawed 9/11 Commission report.

“Even the commissioners and their panderers admit it had shortcomings” Gravel said. “This commission will be made up of people with only one stake: finding the truth.”

Petition drive leaders say their efforts began in February, and thus far have gathered around 10,000 signatures in support of the ballot initiative. That leaves another 20,000 signatures that the petitioners must collect before an early September deadline. Even if they collect the needed signatures, they must clear additional hurdles. The City Council must approve the measure, although a council rejection of ballot initiative can be overridden by the collection of 15,000 more signatures. Mayor Michael Bloomberg can also unilaterally veto the measure.

Despite the hurdles, volunteers are pressing on. Coordinator Les Jamieson said that the key would be building a “mass movement” able to pressure the government in the case of a Bloomberg veto. While the petition drive does not presuppose a particular theory of what happened on 9/11, Jamieson cited the influence of web-driven 9/11 conspiracy theory research as a key motivators for many volunteers.

“If you take physics 101, you know that oxygen-fed fires don’t burn hot enough to melt or bend steel” said volunteer Doug Wight. “No one knows what happened, but we know what they’re telling isn’t true.”

Conspiracy theory research has sparked some mainstream controversy already, with Popular Mechanics and the Department of State refuting the major claims of some conspiracy theories.

The full ballot initiative, which can be viewed at nyc911initiative.org/, would appoint 15 people, including Gravel, former Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chaffee, activists, and representatives of 9/11 victims’ families. The commission would rely on private financing, with a budget of $10 million a year.

Despite the prominence of 9-11 conspiracy theorists at yesterday's press conference, former Senator Gravel directed most of his comments at supporting his vision of direct democracy in America. “We’re trying to change the paradigm of human governance” by supporting ballot initiatives such as this across the country, he said. “To have power you should be able to vote on all issues that affect your lives.”

Gravel said he supports any efforts to bring accountability to the Bush administration, also claiming that he expects a new commission to uncover crimes committed in the lead-up to 9/11.

“The sooner we put a President, a Vice President, a Secretary of Defense in jail, the sooner things will shape up” he said, adding that “impeachment is too soft.”

The 9/11 family survivors who forced the 9/11 Commission into being now say it was a whitewash. See their film "9/11 Press for Truth": http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3979568779414136481&q=9%2F11+press+for+truth&ei=8aBZSLeyL4-E4gKOxpSjDw

Ballot initiatives are an important solution to ALL "government against the people." Sen. Gravel also leads the National (ballot) Initiative project -see http://Vote.org

Ballot initiatives are the origin of most reforms, such as women's suffrage (passed in 13 states before Congress went along), direct election of Senators (4 states), publicly financed elections (by initiative in 6 of 7 states with them), medical marijuana (8 of 13 states) and increasing minimum wages (in all 6 states that tried in 2006). See http://Vote.org/initiatives for more examples. The media have seized on the problem initiatives. They generally kiss up to politicians and downgrade citizens.

Clark says:

This is great news! Good for Mike. Here's a guy with an impressive background based of good will, humanity, gov’t accountability and looking out for regular people. We saw it from the Pentagon Papers to attempting to stop the Vietnam draft. Now he’s standing up again to let people know that we, as citizens, have a voice; and that voice shouldn’t just be suppressed to a once-every-four-years vote by pulling one lever or pushing a gerrymandered Electoral College/Delegate system.

Ballot initiatives. That's change, Mr. Obama. Power to the people.

By looking at the timeline this article set out, it sounds like time is running out for this initiative to get the needed signatures. I hope New Yorkers step up and volunteer to get signatures to help set up this NYC 9/11 ballot initiative for a vote this November.

I say this, having read the 9/11 Commission Report, heard the informed words of family members calling foul – that a true investigation into the greatest attack on U.S. soil did not take place – and read up on how un-independent the Commission was constructed from the start, thanks to Phil Zelikow’s oversight of it. He and Condy were tight. It’s utterly shocking, disturbing and disheartening that no good souls in Washington stepped up to support the 9/11 families, Citizens Watch and others in their quest to remove Zelikow from his oversight of the commission; shocking that the Commission took the trust we Americans gave them and betrayed us all.

But, Zelikow was allowed to maintain his post as Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission despite his years spent working with Ms. Rice, despite having participated in Bush administration briefings prior to Sept. 11 on the threat al Qaeda posed to the country. These are facts which NY Times reporter Philip Shenon has written of in his new book recently.

I always find interesting the term "conspiracy theorist.” Sept. 11 was executed successfully due to a conspiracy, obviously, so it's just a matter of which conspiracy one believes:

A) the administration's account that the 9/11 Commission handed the public via the 9/11 Report

or…

B) if you come to a different, more probable conclusion, one which details specifically who accomplished what, how and why, based on science, true investigative reporting with subpoena power and the allowance of first-hand accounts and all questions considered from family members.

That’s what the nexus of all 9/11 debates should be about. Did the Commission succeed or fail in providing a true, top-to-bottom investigation, considering the horrendous nature of the crime and its far-reaching impact on our lives today and the lives of our children?

Personally speaking, I'd trust Bill Doyle, who lost his son Joey in the WTC collapse and heads the Coalition of 9/11 Families before I’d trust Zelikow. According to Doyle, half of the family members his organization represents think that there was government complicity in the attacks, and that number jives with a recent Zogby poll about the percentage of NY’ers who want a new investigation. I didn’t lose anyone in the attacks, but I know someone who did, a person who sat in the 9/11 hearings in Washington, and was and is still disgusted by the utter lack of investigation that took place. This person called the 9/11 Commission a "whitewash, a joke." If an investigation took place, he’d be at peace. But it didn’t, so he’s not. I trust his judgment, not the agenda of an administration that has lied to us about the war in Iraq every step of the way; an administration that NEVER cared about the first responders who are dying from the toxic air they breathed while working in the rubble weeks and months after the attacks.

Georgia Senator Max Cleland, who quit his post as one of the 10 appointed 9/11 Commissioners, called the Commission a “national scandal." "A majority of the commission has agreed to a bad deal," Cleland said in an interview. "It is a national scandal... I'm not going to be part of that. I'm not going to be part of looking at information only partially. I'm not going to be part of just coming to quick conclusions. I'm not going to be part of political pressure to do this or not do that..”

"Let's chase this rabbit into the ground here. They had a plan to go to war and when 9/11 happened that's what they did; they went to war."

I'd trust Bill Doyle, Mike Gravel, Lorie Van Auken, Lincoln Chaffey, and really, nearly any randomly selected public school physics professor, sanitation worker (no offense sanitation workers), or neutral country leader (Switzerland?) to oversee and conduct an investigation rather than Zelikow, Kean, Gorelick, etc.

As most media savvy folks know, when anyone stands up to speak out against the power elite that run this country – in any capacity - they get trashed in the mainstream media and by fellow elected officials as being either an oddball or unpatriotic, and sadly, many of the seemingly unknowing masses nod and parrot the mudslinging as truth. That said, I'm scratching my head on whether this Village Voice writer’s tagging of Gravel as a “political loose cannon” was meant to undercut Gravel’s credibility, or, sincerely (and slyly) congratulate the former Senator for his going against the Washington grain by opposing the military industrial complex for decades. A force which dominates our lives today - at the pump, in national budgets and policy.

Webster's dictionary describes loose cannon as "a dangerously uncontrollable person or thing."
Sounds like George Bush or Dick Cheney, and, potentially John "Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Bomb Iran" McCain would fit that bill.

OK. I’ve thought about it, and I'm going ahead and giving Mr. Meisel the benefit of the doubt, even though my hope in American journalism serving as the Woodstein checks and balances plummets like my faith in our Congress to hold George Bush and Dick Cheney accountable for their lies and propaganda.

Godspeed to the NYC 9/11 Ballot Initiative.

The 9/11 Truth Movement is only growing stronger every day. It is appropriate that New Yorkers should conduct a real investigation that will find and hold accountable the true perpetrators of this crime on their own soil. The writer failed to mention that the NYC 9/11 Commission will have subpoena power, which is something the phony 9/11 Commission did not have.

Dear Mr. Meisel,

Thanks for getting 9/11 Truth mentioned in the Village Voice. Your article would be strengthened by fact checking your more unfortunate quotes. A journalist should never take anything stated as fact at face value. Thus, you do us real 9/11 Truth seekers a discourtesy by quoting one well-meaning but under-educated person that oxygen-fed fires don't burn hot enough to melt steel. In fact that is primarily how much iron is turned into steel. Zealotry should not be highlighted here. This is a serious matter and there is every indication in the world that the 9/11 Commission was "whitewash as Public Service" in the estimation of one highly intelligent person writing at Harper's Monthly and "9/11 Was An Inside Job" as most of the people who have spent more that 20 minutes researching the matter can figure out for themselves.

Thank you for your article about the 9/11 Truth Movement.

As they say in Frisco, Tokyo and London... it's about time someone in American pays attention.

Dorian says:

We need a far better explanation of what caused 9/11 than what our esteemed President has so far offered. In order to derive a truthful investigation it would be necessary to remove biased politicians from the equation. When the first Shuttle exploded in 1986 the chilling explanation came not from the NASA managers who were solely concerned about their project time constraints, but rather from physicist Richard Feynman, a key member of the Roger's Commission. The Rogers Commission found that NASA's organizational culture and decision-making processes had been a key contributing factor to the accident. NASA managers had known that contractor Morton Thiokol's design of the rockets contained a potentially catastrophic flaw in the O-rings, but they failed to address it earnestly. They also ignored warnings from engineers about the dangers of cold weather launches and had failed to adequately report these technical concerns to their superiors. The Rogers Commission offered NASA nine recommendations that were to be implemented before shuttle flights resumed.
