Just One of the Girls? Michelle Obama's Appearance on The View

Michelle Obama's guest host slot on ABC's morning gab-fest was either brilliant or calculated, depending on your point of, um, view. The Daily News places the wife of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama on the front page for her fashion prowess. Obama donned a $148 black-and-white dress from White House/Black Market, a store dedicated to (you guessed it) black and white clothing.

The Daily News dubs the appearance a success, noting that she "fist-bumped" her co-hosts a la her moment with her husband when he clinched the nomination. She chatted about her family's love of bacon and her hatred of wearing pantyhose (they're "painful" and "always rip"). Obama even proved she was human when she flubbed and accidentally referred to her husband as "sweet, pathetic," when she meant empathetic. News columnist David Hinckley described Obama as a "21st century Welcome Wagon hostess" and her appearance as "an effective counter to insinuations she's angry and aggressive."

The Post, on the other hand, describes the appearance as "lame." Andrea Peyser writes, "It was as painful as a root canal to watch Michelle try so hard to show her feminine side. She mainly succeeded in looking bored and superior." This "bored and superior" claim is juxtaposed with a picture of Obama giving the "fist bump" to Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Obama is smiling and giddy. The paper also runs down a list of "Highlights and lowlights" that include her "Most cringe-worthy moment" (a tie between the pantyhose comment and when she brushed some lint off Matthew Broderick's shoulder) and "Proof positive the Obamas are not Muslim" (in which Obama declares that the Obama family are "bacon people!" at breakfast).

Of course, this is merely one hour of television in the midst of a long campaign, but it shows that there is an attempt to "rehab" Michelle Obama's image so that she does not come off as a 1992-era Hillary "I don't bake cookies" Clinton. The dress is a perfect example. It shows that despite her high-paying job as a Harvard-educated attorney, she is still "of the people." A $148 dress is out of reach of many in America, but it's a much closer representation of realistic fashion than the usual outfits she wears. It's surprising that the Post didn't take Obama to task for that, for some form of "fashion pandering." It would have been more legitimate that complaining about Obama "offer[ing] the back of her hand to Elisabeth Hasselbeck."

She really was impressive on The View. I wonder is she will be the tallest First Lady ever if Barack is elected?

Can you be first lady with this in your past? This is a significantly more serious problem than some hidden/non-existent videotape where someone called white people white!

Michelle Obama is very stylish and I love the dress she wore on the view. I actually ran to the White House Black Market in the Atlas Park shopping center in Queens to look for the same dress.

Julie Hensley says:

How in the world can anyone call her appearance painful or cringe worthy? Was she brilliant... umm no, not particularly... did she fit in with a few other women having some fun? ... ummm yea, am I surprised? No.. I'm annoyed with people who think she's cold just cause she's successful and confident and secure with herself. If that is the same as being cold.. the world would be a better place if most women were 'colder' in this way!

She's a decent woman with her own level of success and abilities and I respect that she is Senator Obama's wife..but ultimately he is the one I am voting for, HE is the one in politics - she isn't, her fumbles - as few as they have been - just prove how honest they are... she's not 'into' this politics game.

Michelle Obama is a classy woman. Her problem, if anything, is that she is too honest, shoots straight from the hip.
Now, not to talk about a man's wife, but if you really want something to dig up, look at Cindy McCain.
No way and I do mean no way, can Cindy McCain live through the pressures of a presidential race without drugs.
All those years that she used and stole drugs from her own company, no way would she recover without treatment and she hasn't had any.
And, for John McCain to pretend that he didn't know that she was using drugs.
The only way he didn't know is that he has his own stash. I mean, it is not unheard of for a person living with the amount of physical pain that he lives with to use narcotics to cope and then get hooked.
Is is possible that neither of them could qualify for the job of WalMart greeter.
In order to qualify, you have to pass a urine screen.

Who cares? It's the expansion of the government that is killing us. And Obama and McCain BOTH plan to expand it more.

We'll be in the poor house while the expansionists are in the White House.

I hate the fact that the GOP would try to humiliate such a good woman just to demonize Barack Obama. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Sean Hannity will have to answer to God one day for his daily attempts to defame Barack. All of his arguments are "WEAK" at best.

allmymarbles says:

It must be very difficult for the wives (or husbands) of candidates for major offices. Usually they are not politicians and are insufficiently conscious of the pitfalls of being in the public eye. Then, should their spouses be elected they must put their own lives on hold and relegate themselves to a public relations role. Hillary Clinton resented it and Bess Truman opted out.

She's classy and intelligent beautiful family. I think society forgot that the family institution still exist and how beautiful it is together.... Frankly, I am a bit jealous of Barak Obama. Michelle would seem to be the sort of person who wears well over time. As first lady, she will also be first mother and first wife. You can often tell a lot about parents by their children. A thoroughly nice family.

I think that Michelle is a classy lady, and she has proven it doesn't take the most costly garments to make you look good, but how you wear them and she wears them well, even her casual clothes. She will add style to the white house. She's not only stylish but smart, and she holds her own. To bad other people don't understand how we as black women can look like a million and don't have a million. Go Barak and
Michelle, love you.

Nikki L says:

Michelle is indeed an inspirational figure. She shows you can be feminine without being weak, strong with being overbearing, intelligent without being intimidating. As for people who are still hanging onto that comment about not being proud of America, get over yourselves. Nobody can say that they have always been proud of America. We are judged as a collective, and there have been plenty of times that I have cringed when hearing foreigners comment on some of the things that America has done and I've thought "man, I better be quiet so that they don't hear my accent" because it's been so embarrassing. Especially with the 'genius' in the White House now.. *cringe* Come on folks, give credit where credit is due. Michelle, you make me so happy to be the strong, tall, no-holds-barred woman that I am. Stay strong and God Bless you.

For those of you who have so many negative things to say about Michelle Obama's appearance, you are shallow and stupid. Obviously Eleanor Roosevelt wasn't the prettiest first lady, but she did a lot and was an advocate for civil rights. So, you don't have to look like a barbie (Cindy McCain) to be a first lady. Michelle Obama is beautiful.

A few suugestions for Michelle for life in D.C. Bill Lawerence @ The Bill Lawerence Salon in Adams Morgan appears to me to be a stylist of your liking. Also for visiting heads of state, Ian McWilliams was President Clinton's hair cutter, at Bravada Hair Design on C. St., S.E.. One more tidbit, a wonderful church, The Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church, at 610 Rhode Island Ave., N.E., is a place of worship and praise that will satisfy your entire family. It is led by a husband and wife team, Pastor Alfred and Co-Pastor Susie Owens. They are totally awsome. I am a former transplant to the D.C. area from Indiana, and I wanted to extend these heads-up to you. May God bless you and yours, we are all so very proud of the Barack Obama family. Peace
