Michael Bloomberg joined Bill and Melinda Gates in Times Square earlier today to announce a plan aimed at getting developing countries to quit smoking. The $500 million Gates Foundation initiative follows a report by the World Health Organization -- one which Bloomberg helped to fund -- on global tobacco use. The mayor calls the initiative "one of the most important public health efforts of our time."

Back in February, Bloomberg was on hand for the release of the initial study, which asserts that smoking will lead to the deaths of more than a billion people over the next century if decisive action isn't taken.

Jesus H. Christ. Put the Gateses next to "do-gooder" in the dictionary. When I think what animal protection groups could do with that money it makes me want to take both of them and put them in the river in a bag of rocks. Who cares about smokers. I'm one. I'm making an informed decision on the matter. If smoking is killing off people in third world countries then good. You kill two birds with one stone in the whole darwininan scheme of things. A person stupid enough to smoke dies and a poverty stricken person dies. Good riddence.

Smokers don't just pass away peacefully. I watched my mother fighting for breath after an operation for lung disease, and I've no wish to see that happen to anyone - even to reduce the surplus population.

Bloomberg doesn't want anyone to quit smoking. He's spending the money on anti-smoking propaganda and simultaneously increasing cigarette taxes. In Nazi Germany, Hitler had one of historys most extreme anti-smoking campaigns and studies showed that the result was that MORE people smoked than ever! So it's a win-win for Bloomberg, he will look like a saint for trying to save those smokers and at the same time make billions in tax dollars. Don't underestimate Bloomies capacity to make the billions of dollars- he's very good at it.
