GOP Candidates "Sling Mud" in Race for Fossella's Seat

By Roy Edroso, Wednesday, Aug. 27 2008 @ 1:29AM

straniere.jpgWe earlier mentioned the divisions in the Staten Island Republican Party that threatened the chances of whatever GOP contender ends up running for the seat of disgraced Republican Congressman Vito Fossella in the 13th CD. We then focused on two exiles from the Republican primary who were hanging in as write-in candidates.

But the Staten Island Advance tells us that the two slated contenders, Dr. Jamshad "Jim" Wyne and Robert "Bob" Straniere, now "sling mud" at each other with highly inflammatory charges.

According to the Advance, Straniere has accused Wyne, formerly and professional known as Jamshad Wyne, of "trying to hide his Pakistani and Muslim heritage by 'changing his name'" for this race to Jim -- a provocative claim in the culturally conservative borough. He also called Wyne, whom the state Health Department had put on probation for professional misconduct in 2003, "ethically challenged."

Wyne accuses Straniere of trying to solicit from him an "illegal" contribution to Straniere's 2001 Beep race -- a crime for which "two politicians, one running for Queens borough president and the other for public advocate, were jailed" previously, the Advance says.

The Advance also reports that Straniere has "acknowledged that he will not be eligible to vote for himself in the primary because he is not a resident of the 13th Congressional District."

This isn't good for whomever eventually receives the GOP nomination. Meanwhile top Democrats continue to turn out for Michael McMahon, who has gotten far more powerful endorsements for the right to contest the seat for the Democratic Party than his more progressive opponent, Stephen Harrison. The Brooklyn Eagle saw Brooklyn Beep Marty Markowitz campaigning with McMahon at the Staten Island Ferry terminal, a sharp blow to the Brooklyn-based Harrison.

Harrison continues to fight the good fight; he went all the way out to Tottenville's Conference House Park on Sunday to protest the substandard conditions at Staten Island beaches. But with even progressive stalwarts like Representative John Hall discussing the 13th CD race with reporters without giving him props, Harrison must be feeling awfully lonely these days.

ROSALIE says:

Harrison isn't lonely at all, he's got thousand upon thousand supporters who don't care about Marty Markowitz at the Ferry with McMahon. Atlantic Yards, need I say more?

Rich Greve says:

Steve Harrison has many dedicated supporters and has received some inportant endorsements, such as the Nat. Org for Women and Progressive Dems of America. In Brooklyn, McMahon is not known well nor is he known well in 2/3 of Staten Island.

Hilda B. Classon says:

The truth is, Mr. McMahon is an opportunist. He didn't challenge Fossella two years ago because "I had a job". Isn't that interesting. I do remember many an elected official who, while seated, ran for higher office. As an example, Rep.Jerry Nadler was serving in the New York Assembly when he ran for Congress. Anthony Weiner, a sitting Brooklyn Congressman, ran for Mayor. No, Mr McMahon just wanted easy pickings.

Conversely, Stephan Harrison knew that a challenge to Fossella would be extremely difficult, but nonetheless, knew it had to be done. Almost miraculously, without support from Democrat higher-ups, without real money; but with the support of dedicated volunteers, Steve won 43% of the vote. No previous challenger did anywhere near that result.

Steve deserves and has earned the opportunity to run for Congress in the 13th CD. The 13th doesn't need a johnny-come-lately primary challenger. Mr. McMahon hasn't earned that privilege.

Jane Li says:

Steve Harrison is the Democrat in this race that understands the change that we need in Brooklyn and Staten Island. He has a real view of the problems facing our communities and the bold vision needed to address those problems. To learn more, visit www.harrisonforcongress.com

David Jones says:

Mr McMahon can best be characterized as mediocre. He is traditional and conservative. Some are comfortable with a Democratic Vito Fossella and McMahon would be their choice.
If you want a representative who understands how to meet the challenges of the present and has the courage to make it happen then Harrison would be your choice.
Harrison is pro peace, universal health care, affordable housing and access to education for all. He is a strong advocate for senior issues and energy independence. Harrison doesn't just talk the talk while campaigning. His is a broad vision for change and I urge your support in the primary.
