Sarah Palin's "Business" Career: Car Wash, Consultancy Earned Roughly $0

By Wayne Barrett, Tuesday, Oct. 7 2008 @ 1:58PM
Comments (46)
Categories: Election 2008, Politics

coolhandluke.jpgIn the debate last week, Sarah Palin referred to herself twice as a "business owner" -- a part of her resume that came right after "mayor" and "governor."

In fact, she and her husband Todd once owned 40 percent of a car wash that never washed a car, and she incorporated a marketing company that went out of business without ever doing any business. Strangely enough, the media fact-checkers were so focused on policy errors they missed a very personal one.

The best source on this is Palin, who called herself "just an unemployed housewife from Wasilla" in an op-ed she wrote for the Anchorage Daily News in December 2004, eleven months after she stepped down from the state oil & gas commission. She was unemployed from January 2004 to December 2006, when she took over as governor, and it was during that period when she made her only attempts at creating a small business. Before that she'd been in Wasilla city government for a decade -- as a city councilmember and mayor.

On July 1, 2004, the Palins and Carolin and Ray Wells purchased commercial property in Anchorage, incorporating themselves as Anchorage Car Wash LLC. "When we started, we thought we were going to go ahead" with the car wash," Carolin Wells told Modern Car Care. "We just decided to disband it. It was actually just an investment for both of us over a piece of property as it turned out." They sold it for a small profit in January 2006, just as Sarah Palin was launching her gubernatorial campagn.

In 2005, Palin incorporated Rouge Cou (roughly translated, "Red Neck"), a marketing firm that got a license but, according to disclosure forms she filed with the state the next year, never did any business.

Is this mean anything? Has Obama ever made a dime? Nope, only gets paid by the tax payers. Lets have some real political talk on here, not this shit.

This comment is regarding the only other comment. What does, "is this mean anything?" mean? If you mean, "does this mean anything?" The answer is yes. It means Palin is a little liar who likes to put a positive yet bull-shit spin on her past in order to sell herself. It is belittling and arrogant.

Ras Nesta says:

Umm, Wayne, she DID refer to herself as a "business owner".

In a logical world that would open up discussion of what she's actually accomplished to use that self-identification.

The political angle is that Bible Spice will break the 9th Commandment against lying again and again to get elected.

Small town values uber alles.

Wayne: The point here is that she claims being a business owner as an indication of her ability to rule the country. Seems it's much like McCain's war experience: being shot down.

Bob Richardson says:

Sigh, more MSM being vicious and sexist to Sarah Palin. She was awesome at the debate. She's a real Main Streeter, a populist, and Obama is a Muslim. That's all America needs to know. Vote for a Patriot or a Terrorist Traitor, America, the choice is yours.

Anne says:

Hey, Bob. Just thought you might want to consider that 'Terrorist Traitors,' as you call them (i.e. Muslims) can be just as patriotic as anyone else in this country. Not all Muslims are terrorists, and not all terrorists are Muslim.
Think, think really hard. What was the worst act of terrorism in the US prior to 9/11/01? The Oklahoma City bombing. That terrorist was Catholic.

So, maybe consider a few things before putting people down for their religion such as, oh, say, 'should I really be biased based on religion?' Get off your prejudicial high-horse and start blaming the -individuals- who have caused damage, as opposed to an entire group - most of whom have -not- blown up our country.

[/comment to Bob]

As for Palin and Obama - well, not really a comparison there, since she's running as VP, not president. McCain is mean and self-involved - and greedy. Did you know that, out of the idiots that took part in the Keating scandal, he was the ONLY ONE who benefited personally, as well as politically? Yeah, because I really want another Nixon in the White House. No thank you. Palin and her lies (or embellishments, as it were) are just the icing on an already stale cake.

Ray says:

Uh, Wayne, was Obama working at the University of Chicago for 8 years as a lecturer for free?

Is working at the UofC "getting paid by the taxpayers." I've been led to believe that UofC is a private university but then, when Wayne has the facts, why argue?

The woman tells whoppers, large and small, significant and insignificant. But that is as American as Apple Pie. The real thing to see is if there is still a sucker born every minute. Cause if so, the Palin-McCain Ticket might win. But then again, you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

As a business owner myself, I resent it wthat she calls herself a "business owner" for having owned a parcel of land. Owning a small business and making a go of it on your own is hard work. This is just one more example of her padding her resume. She'd never get a job in my company doing that! But she's darn cute -- so go ahead and vote for the cur -- er -- girl, right wing nuts.

Comments like Bob Richardson's show the fear-mongering lying anger that is too prevalent in the right. Obama's not Muslim, in the first place, and even if he was, so what? There's no requirement that the president of the US be Christian, although the Religious Right sure seems to want it that way.

The nonsensical hatefulness of calling Obama a "terrorist traitor" is beneath comment.

Bob-

Would you term the person that uttered this phrase a patriot?

"My government is my worst enemy. I'm going to fight them with any means at hand."

This quote is from Joe Volger, who founded the Alaska Independence party. Palin's husband was a member for 7 years and Palin verbally supports them."Keep up the good work," Palin told AIP members while governor. "And God bless you".

She thinks a guy who wants to fight the US government by any means necessary should "Keep up the good work", and you think she is a Patriot. Keep deluding yourself buddy.

I guess it's true, Bob Richardson, irony is dead. For those of you who don't have a dictionary as close as your keyboard, the primary definition is: the use of words to suggest the opposite of what they literally mean. When used in a taunting or contemptuous way, it's sarcasm. Keep up the good fight, Bob, there are a few people who still have a sarcastic sense of humor. Sarah Palin is just an ignorant, mean-spirited, liar (that is not sarcasm, for those of you who might be confused).

And she couldn't even do that correctly. In French adjectives are placed after the nouns they modify. Ergo, "cou rouge" is proper; "rouge cou" is, grammatically speaking, nonsense.

Well, it is a stretch for her to say that she was a business owner. More realistically, she TRIED to run a few businesses but both fell through and she flipped them. I guess one could call it a business venture.

Now since honesty is oh soooooooo important, where is the Village Voice articles about Obama's many lies? Ayers was "just a neighbor"? ??? What about the many lies from his biography? His father a goat herder??? He grew up in poverty (but while living with his rich grandmother, a VP of a bank)??His incredible stance on campaign finance reform?

This is utter hypocrisy. I am ashamed to call myself a democrat.

Palin the little wolf killing adulteress was wealthy, she didn't need a job, to call herself an unemployed housefrau is disingenuous at best. While her hubby was off servicing skidoos she was cleaning out his business partners pipes, not exactly unemployed. And Nush, I think your dead on. Obama WILL be our next President. I mean, with 105 percent voter registration in Cincinatti, how can Obama lose!

I've had 3 companies I've registered with my state, and I've reserved (and kept) domain names for those businesses, even though 2 of them I never moved forward with beyond the formative stages, but that doesn't make me a failure as a businesswoman. Lots of people start businesses they don't see to fruition, often for legitimate, respectable reasons. Thomas Edison invented many more things that flopped than flew. Judged by the standard you hold Sarah Palin to in this article, Thomas Edison was a failed inventor. Good thing for us tried anyway.

Posted On: Sunday, Oct. 12 2008 @ 2:54PM
Skeptic says:

1) Phlegmfatale, its true that Thomas Edison invented many more things that flopped than flew. But Thomas Edison actually invented things. That's the point. Sarah Palin did not try and fail to run a small business, or small businesses. She did not run a small business at all. Period.

2) And yes, Obama is a Muslim. The evidence is very clear. His mother was a white woman from Kansas. All Kansas women are either Moonies, Ho's or Muslims. Everyone knows that. Also, he has a funny name, that is proof he is a muslim. Also, he is a negro, or part negro, and it is a well known fact that the black race cleaves to Allah. The fact that Obama is a muslim is clear and obvious to anyone with an IQ under 40.

For Wayne:

In the early 90's, my uncle who lives in Arizona, told me about a channel or canal (something like that) that the State of Arizona wanted to build to get water to Phoenix and Tuscon from the Colorado River. He said that John McCain found out about it and bought up a bunch of desert land for a small sum and then turned around and sold it to the government and made quite a bit of money. I wanted to do research on this myself but haven't had the time. I saw you on "Countdown" last night and thought maybe I could give you this and see if you run with it and see what happens. Thanks!
