Albany Cools toward Kennedy, Catches Gillibrand Fever

gillibrandbill.jpgWe first noticed Democratic Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand when she pwned challenger Sandy Treadwell and Rudy Giuliani this election season, trumping them with her high NRA rating. Lately she's gotten more attention as a Senate replacement, not to mention a "Select Gillibrand" web site she claims to know nothing about (though she has filled out the questionnaire required of contenders).

Why not Gillibrand? She's a proven winner. She's known by the party faithful, including the outgoing Senator's husband. She's female, which seems to be on the checklist. if she weren't being seriously considered, no one would bother to float rumors that she can't be picked because she and Nancy Pelosi don't get along -- nor would others (including Pelosi) push back on that story.

Today the Albany Times-Union asks if Gillibrand is a "dark horse." But with Paterson starting to demur on Kennedy, for all anyone knows she may be the front-runner.

Gillibrand supports the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, opposes gun control, and opposes licenses for undocumented workers. She's pretty far to the right of the Democratic Party.

I would like to know if Gillibrand voted in all of the general elections, as shockingly Ms. Kennedy did not.

Liz R says:

Gillibrand is a hard-working mom with young kids, and she clearly understands that New York's upstaters are real people with many different economic, social and political concerns (just as are the downstaters). She's tech-savvy. She has a proven track record in fundraising, networking, getting elected and in representing constituents. For the person who posted that Gillibrand is to the right of the Democratic party, wake up: this is 2009, not 1968. Roadblocking Ideology is out, a pragmatic track record and sensible problem solving efforts are in. We want someone who knows what a trainwreck this economic climate is for all of New York State, not just "the city." Gillibrand knows how to get to every village in her huge district without Google Maps by now, so no reason to think she can't expand her horizons comfortably and quickly to connect with people in the rest of New York's towns and cities. Plus when Gillibrand speaks, you can hear not only full sentences but paragraphs with topic sentences. This is a useful skill when one wants to persuade other Senators to consider the needs of New York State's citizens.

LizR:

And for what it's worth, Gillibrand actually worked as a lawyer, starting out as a clerk for the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and working her way up to partner in a law firm. Not to mention that she was elected twice, by voters, and is currently on the Armed Services Committee. She is a powerhouse fundraiser, ranking #11 out of members of Congress.

Do I smell an upset?

And: She just had a baby boy earlier this year, at the age of 41. She became the 6th member of Congress to give birth while in office:

It's good for everyone to know that the district that she represents is a very republican area. NY may be blue as a state, mostly because of the city, but upstate is very red. She won reelection and her constituants are quite pleased with work on our behalf. Good luck Kirsten !!

Far lefties are not neccesary in NY state. Good luck Kirsten !!

fsteele says:

Gillibrand meets a lot of the points that have been mentioned: female, experienced, women's issues -- and Paterson has said he wants someone upstate and who can be re-elected many times to gain seniority. Gillibrand is young enough to serve many more years.

Just so it isn't CK! Even Cuomo would be better.

CrossPatch says:

Pelosi doesn't like Gillibrand because Kirsten Gillibrand has integrity. During the Democratic primaries, Pelosi and company (Steny Hoyer, James Clyburn, etc) tried to buy her vote for Obama with $50,000 (see opensecrets.org). Her superdelegate vote could not be bought.

Kirsten Gillibrand stuck with Hillary and truly represented her constituents (unlike Representatives Baron Hill-IN, Jason Altmire-PA, Ron Klein-FL, Nick Lampson-TX, Patrick Murphy-PA, Carol Shea-Porter-NH, Linda Stender-NJ, Niki Tsongas-MA, Zachary Space-OH, Tim Mahoney-FL, Gabrielle Giffords-AZ, John Adler,NJ, to name a few. These people were all bought and paid for.
