Crash Landing: Hudson River Rescue Roundup

The remarkable emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 preoccupied news outlets. Some took a new-media angle. "Hudson Plane Crash & Obama Show Social Media Legitimacy," bragged WebProNews, and everyone swooned over the twitpic of the fallen jet taken by Janis Krums from a rescue ferry. Reporters begged for IM reports: "You can also send us a note on Twitter @news14charlotte," said North Carolina's News14. The Times headlined Matt Kane's post-crash email, "I landed in the Hudson," though the story was mostly about other survivors.

Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III was lionized by colleagues and the press for his miraculous landing. "That's some pilot!" cried the New York Post. "Hero of the Hudson," tagged the Daily News. "Captain Sullenberger, wherever you are... the first round is on us," said Aero-News. The Smoking Gun posted his CV. "Sullenburger III for United States Senate in New York!" cried American Glob, seconded by Fake Virginia and Newsday's Spin Cycle.

The event was viewed from every conceivable perspective. "Yesterday's amazing airplane rescue... provides spiritual ponderings," said the Mormon Times. "Those rescued have reason to view life in an entirely new way as they look up to heaven and wonder why they were given this second chance." "In Hoboken, all eyes glued to the plane," headlined the Jersey Journal. "DePauw students on hand for Hudson River rescue," said the Indianapolis Star. "Air crash reminds us of safety demo's purpose," nagged an AP report ("Corey Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the Association of Flight Attendants union, said the typical lack of interest among passengers in the safety demo is 'frustrating'").

Healthline pimped the relevance of a "Cold Water Boot Camp," run by "Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, affectionately (and respectfully) known as 'Dr. Popsicle.'" A birding blog worried that, if bird-related aeronautic difficulties such at this (Flight 1549 was downed by geese in the engines) are common, "it may lead to raised voices of culling of the bird populations." "Obama saved the people on that plane. I am convinced of it," "jokes" a right-wing douchebag. "The US people are lucky this time coz all aboard reported safe," said Sharing is Loving, "and this wont stop US from supporting Israel." Um, what?

New York Personal Injury Law Blog informs us that there's a legal firm already trawling for lawsuits. With that we take our leave; on to the next disaster!

Just had to leave props for CAPTAINS "Sully" and Lombardi someplace, after hearing of this... And to all those who got it done this time. Very outstanding! Congrats also to all the crew and survivors... And the NYC area at large. It had been my common understanding all my life, that NYC was a hard place to be. So many millions of people and very little love to go around. But that seems to have changed recently. Now, it seems the region has become an example for the world. As it should be. I mean... four minutes and a whole fleet of ferries..? Could that really happen? Yes. And it did.

Not that i am not grateful to the pilot for the great job he did (which he was trained to do) just that i feel that the people that did the actual rescue are kind of overlooked. I mean the passengers and the crews would have still drowned in the river (like titanic)if the rescue team had not responded as they did. They deserve as eqaual honor and appreciation
