More Coverage of Rikers Island "Fight Club" First Covered Here

robinson.jpgIn July 2007 Graham Rayman revealed in the Voice that guards at Rikers were deputizing inmates "to beat up other inmates," sometimes paying them with cigarettes, and that internal reports were played off and at least one whistleblower fired. "Young people tell me when they go in there, the culture is such that [youthful inmates] control the jail," a victim's lawyer told Rayman. When inmates beat 21-year-old Tyreece Abney to death, one of them was convicted of the crime -- but nothing changed, and in November Rayman reported on the death of 18-year-old Christopher Robinson by similar methods.

Yesterday three guards were charged with conspiracy in Robinson's death. NY1, the Staten Island Advance, the New York Post and others have picked up the story, and the conspiracy behind it. "Correction Officers Accused of Letting Inmates Run Rikers Island Jail," says the New York Times. "Three correction officers created a sadistic secret society," says the Daily News.

Robinson's mother Charnel told the News, "I feel like I'm one step closer to getting justice today."

JoAnne Parmigiani says:

I find this totally outrageous, unfortunatily it is more than likely that it will not change. I can not express how deeply I feel for this mother. I only hope that she gets some form of justice for her son. I have contributed to Amensity Internation in the past but I think its time for them to take a look at Rikers Island because I feel this is only the tip of the ice burg.

Celestino P. Monclova says:

As someone who is a Correction Officer, I do not believe a word of this tail. Because of the heavy supervision, and toll free phone numbers inmates can call to report corruption, this imaginative fight club environment wouldn't be able to last a single eight hour tour, without it being reported; instantly investigated; and immediately terminated.

This story is a lie, and shame on anyone who wants to mindlessly believe it.

Shera says:

Oh come on, just because you're a correction officer doesn't mean that you can't believe that something like this could happen in jail. Corrupt CO's and wardens turn a blind eye to stuff like this all the time. How are inmates going to "report corruption" when their every move and phone conversations are taped!!??!!! And don't even say they're not. When will someone stand up for once and support what's right, go against the grain? If this story is a lie, how was this guy killed in jail? How did that even happen with everyone doing their job right?

as a retired nyc dept of correction captain shield 965 i have seen problematic supervisors in the rank of warden who were criminaly corrupt and morally banctrupt in the years i worked for the dept from 1981 thru 2000, many wardens and one correction commissioner were forced out , forced to immediately put their retirement papers because as top administrators they were very problematic, some even with drug and alcohol problems .you have no idea how bad the place was . the good news is that every now and then , change comes and inherently evil, problematic , and criminally corrupt supervisors are forced out of this so called law enf agency, which is a good thing. i always suspected some of the attorneys for doc at 60 hudson street shielded and protected these criminally corrupt wardens who i worked for at all costs, on orders from the mayors office ,fact. to be blunt i would not trust no one working on rikers island in a uniform or a badge thank you , my cell is 352 678 7124 if you have to reac me for further comment

I also think that this is ludicris, I believe absolutely nothing and not a word that is said in this paper. I am on Rikers Island 60 hours a week and I also frequent every facility on the island. There is no way that these officers were letting the violence of this "fight Club" go on. I know for a fact that the prison is heavily supervised by camera, in which in back of the cameras stands additional captains, deputy wardens and assistant dep wardens. This tail falls under, "believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see"
