Wise Beard Man to Anonymous: Don't be a Dope

By Tony Ortega, Friday, Jan. 16 2009 @ 10:53AM

Categories: Anonymous, Scientology
WiseBeardMan.jpg

Yesterday, after putting up our first response to the idiotic Anonymous prankster who was arrested after slathering himself with vaseline and pubic hair clippings and rubbing himself on items at the Scientology building on W. 46th Street, we received this response from our old friend Mark Bunker, also known as Wise Beard Man:

"Oh, thank god you're writing about this."

He said he'd sent out his own "moderately angry" e-mail about the event to friends, and agreed to send us a message for all of Anonymous.

Here's Bunker's characteristically calm, generous statement. We'll follow with a comment on it afterwards:

BUNKER: In any group of people there are dopes. A nebulous group of anonymous people on the net might possibly have a slightly higher percentage of dopes -- but then maybe not quite as many as were in the Bush Administration.

I look around at work or at an event and try to spot the dopes. Quite often it turns out to be me. We humans are prone to doing some dopey things. I'd have to say covering yourself with Vaseline and pubes would be dopiness on an epic scale and it just makes you shake your head and wonder, "Why?"

But, look, not everyone is going to get it. And not everyone in Anonymous is on the same page. In fact, there are factions within Anonymous. Most of the people taking to the streets and speaking out against Scientology fraud and abuse understand there is a serious reason to take action. Others in Anonymous call us Moralfags. You can't please everyone.

But the unfortunate thing about a nebulous mass of people under one umbrella is if one person does something bad, stupid or illegal that can be used to tar everyone else. The great strength of anonymity and numbers can just as easily be a weakness.

In my first video to Anonymous, I suggested they act within the law and take this seriously because Scientology damn well takes it seriously and they will do everything they can to take down each person they can identify. Pubes Kid thought he was pulling a prank (a damn lousy one) but it got him in serious trouble.

Clearly, it doesn't help any cause and it gives ammunition to those who want to go gunning for bear. We've seen that in Riverside County in California where Scientology has enlisted the aid of County Supervisor Jeff Stone to shut down ALL protests at Scientology's desert compound in Hemet.  In fact, Scientology was kind enough to draft the proposed ordinance for Mr. Stone who put it on the fast track and pushed it through a week ago.

When Stone brought up the proposal, he started with a show and tell. He wanted everyone on the board to know just how vile, filthy, nasty, perverted, racist and hate-filled Anonymous is.  Scientology had provided him with a Dead Agent pack of smear material from some of the chans and Stone paraded it all out in public, comparing Anonymous to the worst neo-Nazis or klansmen that the world has ever seen.

But Stone is wrong. I won't defend the vile images or words that were on display, but I can put them in context, which Mr. Stone was either unable or unwilling to do. There are some in Anonymous who like to shock, to produce the most outrageous stuff to get a reaction from people. Am I crazy about that? Not at all. But that not all Anonymous is. If it were, I wouldn't bother to write this.

I have met hundreds and hundreds of Anonymous members and heard from thousands more who may have started attacking Scientology for the lulz and moved beyond that. Who understand the reasons for speaking out and do so peacefully while enjoying cake and some extremely long chats.

I look at it this way, when the infamous 2 Girls 1 Cup video was flying around the net, I was sent links by a lot a people, long before Anonymous entered my life. At work, people gleefully shared the link to watch the look of horror come upon a co-workers face. Now, does that mean that everyone in my office is a depraved pornographer who relishes and basks in the most obscene of material? No. Or that even just the people who sent the links are depraved soulless monsters? No. Maybe one or two, tops but that's it.

But that's the way Supervisor Stone is looking at Anonymous. And as the shocking "chan" material can't totally define Anonymous, nor can Pubes Kid totally define the people protesting Scientology within Anonymous.

The people who protested the passage of Prop 8 were tarred by the Mormon church with the exact same charges Scientology hurls at Anonymous. "They're sending death threats -- they're violent -- they destroyed our property -- they sent white powder in envelopes to our churches." I haven't seen much evidence of that but even if a few dopes did some of those things, does that mean every gay person or supporter of gay marriage should be tarred by those actions? Of course not.

So to Pubes Kid I say, "Stop being a dope." END OF BUNKER MESSAGE

Well, that should make the Anonymous kids feel warm and fuzzy, because Wise Beard Man really lets them off the hook.

I'm surprised, Mark. Someone who's been doing this as long as you have understands how the media works when it comes to Scientology.

Now that the press has labeled an Anonymous operation (however rogue it happened to be) as a "hate crime," Anonymous members are going to find it much tougher to get other press organizations to take them seriously.

Many of the commenters to yesterday's posts offered us this pathetic calculus: "Anonymous may do stupid pranks, but Scientology really hurts people."

Sorry Anonymous, that doesn't work with reporters, and essentially puts you out of contention. Don't be surprised that from now on, any press mention of Anonymous will begin with the stupid Pubeit prank.

And for anyone that claims this hate crime is "not anonymous" or "not sanctioned by anonymous" please see that this comes right out of the "Anonymous Playbook" as posted on their forum along with other offensive "operations" such as one that begins "An anon takes laxatives a half an hour before going into the org to take a stress test, in shorts." That this material was left on the forum since May implicates Anonymous as a group, no matter how amorphous they may be.

Because of Agent Slickpubes, anons who have not shown up to protests in MONTHS are coming back. This Op wasn't for everyone else, it was for Anonymous. The operation worked, we are quickly gaining new and old members because of how famous this became. I know its difficult to understand us Ortega, but you know what usually works for reporters? Knowing the subject you are writing about.
See you Saturday.

Tony, honey, relax. Count to ten. This level of irritation can't be good for your blood pressure.

Seriously, did you really believe that no single self-described Anonymous was ever going to do anything that would strike you as less than gallant? Why are you showing so much personal hurt about this? Does it bother you so much to discover that eighteen-year-olds occasionally do dumb stuff? Dear God, you sound like J Jonah Jameson ranting about Spiderman.

"Who is Spider-Man? He's a criminal, that's who he is! A vigilante! A public menace! What's he doing on MY front page?"

I suspect that Agent Pubeit as a topic will indeed be recycled by many over a long time. On the other hand, I'm not sure that's necessarily going to be a major problem for Anonymous. The whole point of anonymity, after all, is that anybody can achieve it. There is no membership card. And acting anonymously is the absolute antithesis of 'caring about your image' - which is pretty much the only reason why Anonymous ever manages to get any work done at all. Anonymous has never cared about its image. It is not likely to start now, and for good reason. Firstly, it would be totally futile - how do you think it could be managed? - and secondly, ego and top-down leadership do more to kill causes than anything else, Agent Pubeit included.

J Jonah Jameson again: "He doesn't want to be famous? Then I'll make him infamous."

I won't say "do your worst"; in fact, I sincerely hope that you take a little distance from this topic for a few days and then perhaps you will see the inevitable wisdom in the words of Wise Beard Man, who, as was mentioned, is both wise and bearded. As Anonymous deals with the inclement weather, so shall they deal with the inevitable stupidities of their dumber or more overenthusiastic brethren and sistren, and the inevitable moral weeping and concern trolling of their other dumber or overenthusiastic brethren and sistren. What else, exactly, would you have them do?

Wow, StupidGrayDope-you must have copied and pasted that onto a dozen things like this. So I'll have to respond here once again-the playbook was written all by one guy then posted publicly-looks like we're just a collection of people rather than a group. And if you think any of those are fueled by hate that you are an idiot that looks for hate everywhere so that you can clutch your pearls and act flustered.

Also, Agent Pubeit was released after a few hours without bond-does that sound like "he got into serious trouble" with you? The cops TOLD him what he did wasn't so bad.

LOL You mad.

It's nice that Mr. Bunker has an "opinion" about this, what a shame you didn't bother to ask any Anonymous directly and instead picked TWO outsiders, one barely himself OUT of the cult (Beghe) and an old man whose methodologies were antiquated 30 years ago.

Apparently you think this will result in Anonymous getting more press, Mr. Ortega. We invite you to continue along that line if you feel so inclined. The reality is this is a story which cannot be stopped at this point, and if you'd like to cash out your chips I'm sure there are other mainstream news outlets that NOW, in part thanks to your earlier work, will take up the story.

Feel free to back down. We're used to cowardice when push comes to shove. After all, we "grew up" on WBM forcing his views on us all, amirite?

So Tony, are you saying that the hundreds of people I've met on the streets in the last 12 months, who I've talked and informed to about Scientology, who told me to continue and that what we were doing was right, think less of me because of this stupid prank? I don't think so. You just don't get it apparently, very sad. The press will continue to talk about scientology's crimes no matter what, and if you don't because you refuse to cover the news because you are still butthurt about anonymous, then you just lack journalism integrity.

Tony: I love your work and VV. Relax already. I'm 60 yrs old and I laughed at Agent Pube. The NY TV reporter I saw could barely keep a straight face. I have never protested Scientology in my life but I am going this weekend BECAUSE THIS STRANGE TALE CAUGHT MY EYE. Which led to me informing myself about Anonymous vs Scientology. Scientology is bad. Very bad. Anonymous is doing good and as a bonus, is entertaining and energetic. Thanks anonymous people and Tony for bringing this situation to my attention.

@Anonymous
The "Anonymous Playbook" was "posted publicly"? Perhaps publicly viewable but it was posted on a private forum where nonconforming posts are regularly deleted or "domed". Operations such as "SLICKPUBES" and "SIT N SH*T" were not condemned as bad ideas to be "domed" but greeted with approving lols and enthusiasm. Well, that enthusiasm and support paid off. One does not need to spend much time on Anon forums to know how hatefilled they are and even ex-Anons attest to that in comments I've seen elsewhere on this topic. Your own post has its share of haet. So thanks for proving my point.

Sorry Anonymous, that doesn't work with reporters"

So, if house A has a mass murder going on inside and house B has a flaming bag of dog poop on the porch you don't know which story to cover?
You are perfectly unqualified to decide what is important enough to report.

spectator says:

"Don't be surprised that from now on, any press mention of Anonymous will begin with the stupid Pubeit prank. "

Do press mentions of Scientology get to begin with Operation Snow White? Lisa MacPherson and Martine Boublil? Mario Majorski, the scientology swordsman? Paulette Cooper? Illegally obtained and distributed medical records? The goal of 'global obliteration' or 'global vaporization' of psychology? Fair Game? Reed Slatkin's ponzi scheme? 'upstat' rapist Gabriel Williams? 'Letters to the Editor Attack Force'? 'Project Normandy' - the planned systematic takeover of Clearwater?

This pube prank (and that's all it was - a prank) pales in comparison to the crimes of scientologists, yet I rarely (if ever) see the press getting out the wide 'cover it all' paintbrush when talking about scientology.

And for the scientologists reading this: remember the excuses and attempts at rationalization YOU use when confronted with the crimes of your 'church' before you try climbing on your high horse.

But Wormwood, there are already protest groups acting against oil companies and GlaxoSmithKline and Fox News! Undoubtedly they are doing an excellent job, so why on earth would Anonymous want to get in their way?

No; you have to pick an evil. Any one group of people can't solve everything, because there are just too many evils out there to get started if you don't keep some kind of perspective. So other groups will work on Big Oil and Fox News or whatever, and Anonymous will work on Scientology.

The really good news is this: you personally as an individual can choose to join whatever cause you personally find relevant to your own interests, or none at all.

Robert Lindblad says:

Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard on his deathbed told his son
"You know how to get rich... start a religion." admitting that Scientology is nothing but a fictionally created story.
Scientology is nothing but a corporation that thrives off the ignorance of it's followers by selling them and whoever else books, and courses on how to "improve" themselves spiritually.
One of their expensive scams is that they will sell you for extremely large
amounts of money a series of books that in the end are supposed to teach you how to walk through walls.... and after spending long hours of self deceptive meditation, a lot of money, and reading you become brainwashed to believe that you can actually walk through walls and when you try to and end up bumping your nose against the wall you are told that you couldn't do it because you're not ready yet however there are more books and courses available that will someday make it possible for you to do so for larger amounts of money butt not really.
Scientology = manipulative corporate scam brainwashing moneybaggers club
Scientologist = manipulated misguided fool

I know someone who got sucked into that Scientology I didn't know he was a Scientologist until one day, about 4 years ago, he said "Rob here's a book you should read." He passed me Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. I laughed and said "L. Con Flubbfart ha forget it." For the first time in the years since I've known the guy he displayed anger and I'm talking very angry!!! Verbally with an agressive face.
After that display he went on to talk about the ability to walk through walls, he hasn't reached that level but he plans on getting there etc...

Are you at all aware that almost everything you say in your critique of Scientology is wrong? The "start a religion" quote was allegedly made 40 years before Hubbard's death and had nothing to do with his son. There is nothing in Scientology about walking through walls. You are right however that Scientology charges for books and courses to improve oneself spiritually. If you think that trying to improve one's spiritual lot is ignorance then you are entitled to that opinion.

@Anonymous
I fear that you cannot follow a coherent line of thought. That's OK though, keep spewing hate - anonymous will still love you.

Tony, because one kid does something stupid you are going to ignore the gross human rights and constitutional abuses of the CULT of $cientology? It actually doesn't suprise me. Fact be told, TONY, you journalists are mainly cowards and smut peddlers, whoring yourselves out for internet hits, ratings and fame. You write garbage articles, worship at the feet of the HILTON SISTERS, and drop jaw over "DANCING WITH THE STARS", focus on moronic gossip the vast majority of the time and ignore NEWS that IS important to the citizens of the USA. I didn't see you this ourtaged when the CULT of $cientology tried to rush through a ordinance, HAND WRITTEN BY MEMBERS OF $CIENTOLOGY ITSELF, which would have greatly diminished everyones first amendment right to Assembly and Protest. I guess pubic hairs and vasoline are more important to you then THE Bill of Rights, it's more disgusting and you know how the fickle public LOVES disgusting. BTW The Bill of Rights is the document that allows you to put together this crap you call an article.

Journalists the US over lost ALL CREDABLITY a long time ago. Not only that BUT you've all known about the creepy, shaddy $cientology monster and were too damn cowardice to write anything about it for fear of being sued. That in and of itself should tell you something about who is really a threat to the US society. Your welcome from Anonymous, for giving the journalistic community the States over the balls to be able to write critical articles of $cientology. To sum everything up TONY, if you're going to ignore the disgusting nature of $cientology and the practices they carry out due to some moronic kid who covered himself with pubic hairs then you are the exact fickle coward I have painted you out to be.

Sincerely,

PROUD MEMBER/MORALFAG OF ANONYMOUS

What happened to these people??? Google their names and be ASTOUNDED at what you find. THEN answer this question.. Whats worse, PUBIC HAIRS AND VASOLINE or what happened to these people, and more sadly their surviving family members?

Ok..........Some perspective here. How many people have done a stupid prank when they were a teenager?

I have to admit that I showed the video to my 21 year old son who thought it was pretty gross.

But, i don't think it rises to level of disconnection of friends and family, denial of access to medical and psychiatric care, or child and slave labor that is reported by former members of CoS or attempts to block free speech like the Riverside Ordinance.

I guess it all just boils down to what might cause one to be outraged.

Dear StupidGrayDope,
You obviously didn't pay enough to reach the knowledge that that course does exist.
If you wish to waste your lifetime following a bullshitting moneybaggers club it's up to you. However for you to believe that you or anyone else will improve spiritualy through this is completely false. Heaven is free. The only way to improve spiritually is to be a good and honest person.

Tony,

Love your coverage of Scientology-related stuff.

I think it's perfectly fair to post about the Agent Pubeit prank. It was juvenile. It was (tactically) stupid.

But, in the end, it was just a teenager pulling a stupid prank and getting busted for it.

He doesn't represent Anonymous. NOBODY represents Anonymous. Any idiot, anywhere, can call themselves Anonymous and do something stupid. Many have.

I facepalmed (and laughed) when I saw this prank. I groaned a little bit, because I know that it's just human nature to paint a group with a broad brush anytime someone does something like this.

Keeping it in context is important though. For a full year, there have been hundreds of demonstrations in hundreds of cities involving many thousands of protesters.

If Anonymous, as a group, was simply a bunch of idiots out to pull pranks like Agent Pubeit -- it would be thoroughly obvious. Instead, the vast, vast majority have been completely lawful... working with local police to keep anything nasty from happening.

Agent Pubeit did something stupid. He's going to pay for it. I hope he gets probabtion, restitution and a couple hundred hours of community service.

Here's my message to Tony, Jason, and Marc:

Jason: Scientology is not powerful. It was successful in the past because you all were afraid of them. Watch the Wizard of Oz some day and you'll realize that they are just stupid bullies who have never been stood up to, until NOW.

Marc: This protest movement is filled with people who are not anonymous, have never been a Scientologist, and are living thinking human beings with free moral agency. We do what we want, when we want. We are allies, not BFF's. And don't forget Poland.

Tony: I think the media is more concerned with who's getting fired next. Keep in mind too, that some in the protest movement, again who are not part of "Anonymous," nor ever been stupid enough to get snared by this POS corrupt business, have been controlling the message quite well. We don't count the ratio of good articles to bad. We were born of fire in the culture war where all news is good news because it brings to the fore awareness and then investigation by an uninformed populace. Lights on for the roaches.

Expose. Educate. Activate.

You focus on the education and activism, let those of who scare the Scientologists more than they scare each other handle the exposure.

Thank you very much.

But I don't think it is any reason to stop what I have been doing all along. Legally, peacefully protesting & exposing the serious harm done by Scientolgy's management.

It's been an uphill battle all along. I will instead continue to focus on more serious issues like the labor abuse occurring at the Riverside County complex.

Anon went out of Anon's way to 'play nice' per Bunker and co, even though that is against Anon's nature. It cost Anon more than cost Magoo and co. -on the face of it- because this was the first time that Anon was not true to itself and compromised; something Anon will not be doing again any time soon (habeeb it).

They -on the other hand- are career 'users'; they'll do anything to get more attention and people they can use for their beef with COS -an agenda that had nothing to do with Chanology from its inception. I remember when Magoo failed to persuade naive Anons to drop the V masks and face COS which was certainly not within Anon's best interests. Shortly thereafter, this lifelong OSA member/expert conveniently had her phone bill stolen from outside her house giving OSA access to all the Anons she'd gotten phone numbers from. Coincidence? Perhaps...but perhaps not. On NPR in the early days of Chanology, before she got pally with Anon, she made a statement to the effect that Anon (the "shadowy group" not feelgood, wannabe Guy Fawkes wankers who call themselves Anon) were nothing more than her personal army and 'tools'.

Magoo and all those a.r.s. antiques who frown on the shenanigans of Brave Agent Pubeit are hypocrites. They chose to ignore the 'ugly truth' about the 'real' Anon and cherry-pick the stuff they liked. I for one, showed Magoo exactly what she was getting into early on by taking her for a spin around 4chan.

Her and her ilk chose to ignore Anon's 'baggage' -the rape jokes, the pedophilia jokes, the 'racism', the 'sexism', the 'homophobia' and a multitude of other isms and 'sins' that came with Anon- because additional pylons, attention and press is what they were really after.

Chanology started to piss Scientology off -chan style and for the lulz. Anon didn't much care about the 'evils' of this 'insidious cult' because Anon is the INTERNET HATE MACHINE and not that different from Scientology. Anon will brutally fight back when Anon sites are attacked, Anon has Anon's own set of arcane rules, Anon has Anon's own lingo and secrets -knowledge that isn't free to outsiders.

tl;dr Anon was naive and got PA'd by the Old Guard. The Old Guard used Anon, took Anon's bad name and ruined it by preaching 'societal norms' at Anon. Anon DOES NOT WANT or DO societal norms.

The chans no longer care for this alliance or -for the most part- Chanology. Anon would be inclined to let you keep this truck of FAIL and AIDS and that includes all those unfunny moralf@gs who thought that being Anon was putting on a V mask and spouting memes. Anon is a state of mind fools...and it ain't nothing nice.

Howevar, Anon wants Anon's bad name back and Anon want to distance Anonymous from your crusade so get ready for moar Pubeit style raids in the name of Chanology to make you sanctimonious, holier than thou, tinfoil hat wearing leeches look bad.

I keep hearing "(Agent Pubeit) is giving Anon a bad name." Lulz...Anon already had a bad name. What you really mean is you don't want Wise Pube Man to give *you* -the Old Guard- a bad name.

Oh man, the whole Agent Pubic stupidity was dumb, dumb, dumb, and I hope that the clown gets 90 days in county lockup so that he and his buddies can quietly contemplate their stupidity -- which was caught and can hopefully be corrected at a young age.

Anonymous is winning, there can be no denial of that truth. Because the Scientology crime syndicate is losing they have to seize upon any act of stupidity committed putatively by the good guys to try to derail their own unavoidable extiniction.

Agent Pubic and his buddies handed the notorious Scientology crime syndicate a golden opportunity to further spew their insane lies among the mainstream media which, though increasingly aware of what Scientology is and what Scientology does, still manages to reperat what Scientology claims without adding corrective commentary.

My opinions as only, as always, and only my opinions.

LOL! I have to laugh. The n00b Anon didn't do his homework to find out what Mr. Ortega's history has been when it comes to exposing the Scientology Corporation's crmes, abuses, and history. Accusing Tony of not knowing the material is ironic since the Anon didn't bother doing a Google to find out who Mr. Ortega is and what he has done to help expose Scientology.

Usually it's the Scientology lunatics (I'm looking at you, Heterosexual Tom Cruise!) that turn beet red and spew their coffee in outraged anger when they turn to your articles in the morning, but you got Anonymous humping and man, that's EPIC fun!

And dude, please reconsider sending your resume to CNN because you really do belong in the big times and (dare I say it?!) you should have a cable news show of your own, "All Scientology All The Time" would be a great title for your segment. You could have a lot of guests appear on your show, all of them in "V" for Vendetta masks, Moralfags on one couch, Channers on another, and the occasional Old Guardfag (with or without beard) standing between 'em.

The best part -- the very best -- is reading the annoyed postings by n00b Anon who assume you're a Scientology plant, some n00b yarking up on his shoes without having taken your punches and done your homework over the years. Yeah, sure, you haven't been served with amusingly insane paranoid kook legal threats by Scientology in maybe six months or so, but cum(sic)mon, man, these here are the Internet(s) and your name id legend to the point where you would think a few n00bi3 Anon could Google your ass. I found both the whole Pubes situation reprehensible. That noted, I challenge any member of Scientology to compare this justifiably silly behavior to circumstances rampant in Scientology's Rehabilitation Project Force (aka, slave labor) or the myriad number of stories related to aggressive tactics to separate new recruits from their money. In the grand scheme of things, Anon's prank was shameful--and Scientology's crimes monstrous.

As a member and long-time supporter of Anon's work in this area, I am proud to say that both I and the vast majority of my Portland cohort act in a thoughtful, considerate, creative and--most importantly--compassionate manner.

I find it sad that this one incident has the power to overshadow the incredible amount of good work that Anonymous has done to fight Scientology's abuses.

Yesterday on 106 & Park, Lil Fizz (formerly of B2K) hinted that he would be interested in dating Ciara. Rocsi was sure to call him out on that. Hello. With all the misinformation that is out there, I figured that I would start a new forum to help anyone with mortgage advice. I have been in the mortgage business for 10 years and am happy to answer your questions. If you need help with an fha or debt consolidation refinance. Please let me know. Dont be shy!
