Stop the Presses: A Murdoch Apology

By Tom Robbins, Tuesday, Feb. 24 2009 @ 9:27AM

Categories: Media, Tabloided, Tom Robbins
delonaschimp.jpgNot that he needs any help from us spreading the word, but anyone who long ago foreswore the New York Post at a newsstand or in cyberspace because of its many outrages, might be interested to take a gander at Rupert Murdoch's apology in today's paper for last week's wretched monkey cartoon:

"Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted," writes Murdoch.

Since coming to New York more than 30 years ago, the press baron and his Aussie troops have delighted in throwing gasoline on every racial fire they could spot. They even managed to set a few of the blazes themselves. But this is the first time in anyone's memory that Citizen Murdoch has ever personally picked up his pen to tell the public he's sorry -- about anything.

Murdoch says he's convinced that his news room boys had no racist intent in picturing a bullet-punctured monkey as the author of the economic stimulus plan (even though a photo of Obama signing the bill ran just a page away in the same paper). And cynics will note the apologia ran a week late, and just before Al Sharpton is expected to demand that the City Council cancel any ads in the paper.

But a more likely explanation is that the editors and cartoonist Sean Delonas, who doesn't draw a line without considering its possibilities for provoking racial snickers, didn't get the message that Sir Rupert is bent on changing his image. The media king now sees his New York future more in his new broadsheet, The Wall Street Journal, and less in the bad old tabloid that he's long used to punish enemies, reward friends, and toss racial brickbats.

While he's on the apology jag, maybe we can get Rupe to say he's sorry about that big made-up photo he ran a couple years ago on the front page of black transit union leader Roger Toussaint behind prison bars. Just for starters, that is.

Correction: Ever-vigilant Runnin' Scared colleague Roy Edroso corrects me that Rupert Murdoch has indeed apologized in the past -- to Chinese dictators whose good graces he needed to keep his Sky TV beaming Murdochian news to the teeming masses.

Word is that Rupe's new wife has caused him to become more mellow lately. Perhaps this apology, however worthless, is due to that.

I don't see any need for an apology. There are many things that offend many different people yet some of those offended seem to get special consideration. Even if it WAS racist; racists are simply people with a certain belief system and need to be respected like everyone else even if we disagree with them. We must not tinker with ANY of the amendments in order to have them fit our own personal beliefs or they will lose their effectiveness and we will ALL lose our freedoms !

Anyone who cannot see that this cartoon was racist has a problem with common sense. Furthermore, they are likely people who do not have a history which contains centuries of this sort of insult and abuse.

Mr. Murdoch's apology is too little too late. And if he truly wants to rid himself of this problem, he needs to rid himself of the idiot cartoonist, Sean Delonas who scribbled this garbage and the editor-in-chief, Col Allen who approved it to run in his paper. Until then, the protest will continue, and I will be proud to continue participating in them all.

gjdagis, when Eric Holder referred to a nation of cowards, you might have been the type of person he had in mind. Racists are NOT to be respected in any form. Will they respect you or I? No! Will they do everything they can to tinker with amendments in order to fit their personal beliefs? Yes! And they have done so in the past and want to do so again. By the way, not once do I ever hear this kind of talk when we are speaking about black racists, so I don't want any rationales given racists when they are white.

scootmandubious says:

As I wrote on the Post's site, after being turned off by their non-apology last week, the Post has every right to run that cartoon.

On the other hand, we have every right to choose to boycott the paper and its advertisers.

This isn't Alabama or South Carolina. New York is very heavily Democratic. In a very difficult climate for newspapers and advertisers, this was incredibly stupid of the Post.

If the Post wants to solely appeal to a right-wing audience, they are going to see their readership decline to levels that may not allow the paper to survive. Additionally, it is so hard to get advertisers, as is, in the current economic climate. What advertiser in their right mind wants to be anywhere near a boycott?

Time to hit the Post where it hurts...in their wallet.

Ain't freedom of choice grand?

Well, you took your time, Rupert, but I accept your apology. Now how's about re-training your editors so that they're prepared to run a major metropolitan newspaper? At the very least, it's only good for business. Remember folks, billionaires may have deep pockets, but they crumble before the depths of a justified soul. Let's continue to beat them back and not allow them rob us of our humanity--or our capacity to see it in one another.

No apology says:

There is no need for an apology. We are "liberals" and not particularly fans of Murdoch, and even we think this is all ridiculous. The tyranny of black people needs to stop. No one can say anything. If the cartoon were sexist, black men would be applauding it. Such hyprocrisy, and such insanity to read racism into every little thing. Black people are causing a backlash. Black people are making genuine racism less meaningful with their incessant whining over every single thing. The world doesn't owe you. Many groups have, and continue to, suffer horrible discrimination and persecution. Jews, women, and other groups have suffered thousands of years of slavery. Get over yourselves. Focus on the real issues. Rupert Murdoch needn't apologize, it was a harmless cartoon. Sheesh!

Stop the insanity says:

Love how black people can use cop killing, and women killing in rap lyrics under the guise of free speech, but guess that artistic street goes one-way.

Perhaps the black community should use some of that civic energy and hysteria and protest Chris Brown's assault on Rihanna. Instead, many black celebrities have come forward defending him. How can they be taken seriously in their own demands?

It's a scary time when a cartoonist is crucified and muzzled for a cartoon.

Posted On: Tuesday, Feb. 24 2009 @ 3:13PM
peplz says:

It is a scary time... for Racists and their apologists. How idiotic is for one to bring up Chris Brown and Rihanna in relation to an intentional racial insult. First of all they are both black, and people of all races have domestic disputes that end in violence. So why should the Black community specifically come out against Chris Brown? And to the coward who thinks that the "tyranny of black people" is the problem, all of your "black people" generalizations are examples of your sheer ignorance and cowardice when it comes to things racial. You don't know how typical your whole get over it argument is. And it shows you for what you truly are. Ignorant. For all those that would like to reserve the right to make racist jokes, publish racist cartoons, make ignorant 'black people' generalizations, and expect to be praised and not reviled for it. You will be challenged and mocked and made to feel uncomfortable at every turn. Not allowing ourselves to be characterized as less than human has nothing to do with the world owing us or even the persecution of others, but we will get reperations for slavery. And the U.S. government (not the world) will be the ones to pay it forward. You can bet your money on that one. NO PUN INTENDED. So to all racial cowards who think that they have some ground breaking cynical yet typical philosophy about race relations, its time for you to GET OVER YOURSELVES because your way of thinking is antequated and won't prevail.

Johnny B. Goode says:

I don't think Murdoch owned an apology.

I think there's some savy politicians who represent lower class blacks who know they can score points with the folks back home by waving the bloody red shirt of racism.

I don't think there are very many white people who equate apes with black people.

I think there are still too many black people who either think most whites think of them as sub-human, or who themselves have an inferioruty complex and take any allusion to monkeys as a personal insult.

I think we've got a bunch of monkeys in Washington who make what that chimp did look sensible.

Posted On: Tuesday, Feb. 24 2009 @ 4:09PM
peplz says:

I could'nt care less if Murdoch apologized or not. I don't care how many white, black or any people equate black people with apes. Its about the simple fact that if you say it publicly you shall and should be challenged. Let someone publicly make a disparaging statement about Jews, The Holocost or Isreal and see how long they stay in business (or stay in Argentina for that matter). Black people do have an inferiority complex (some of us still straighten our hair),and any allusion towards us as monkeys is an insult. The inferiorty complex that can afflict our children is one of the main reasons why these sorts of public insults cannot go unchallenged. The problem is not what white people think of us. The problem for blacks in a white dominant society with white owned and controlled media outlets is what the images that we constantly see might influence us to think of ourselves. We don't need apologies. Apology not accepted. We need something that cannot be given to us. What we need is something that we must take and procure for ourselves.

I think Rupert Murdoch apology is needed. When you own your company as a boss you should know what is being said and done at all times. You should know all dealings with your companies. This indeed was a raciest picture and the cartoonist and editor should be FIRED!!! This kind of stereo type needs to stop. Murdoch should be held accountable. He also need to get a better hold of his people...no better yet his companies.

I believe that husslers like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton see the writing on the wall when a man like Obama gains power. There's a whole group of people who have milked the racism isssue to death, and they don't want the party to be over just yet. They have to make the case that they are still relevant. They do this best by stoking the fires of race hatred within their own communities.

Dude, just shut up huh? Ignorance at its finest. The whole demonize Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton tactic employed once again. The whole group of people who have milked the racism issue are the ones who profited from slavery. The owners of Viacom, Clear Channel, Universal, Columbia Pictures, Boston Fleet and CSX just to name a few. White dominant. A man like Obama? You mean a black man don't you? Hustler is how the word is spelled. If you think racism is a party why don't you just go on ahead and enjoy it. And, I bet you wish we would just shut up. Thats what the Ku Klux Klan was hoping to do. Just shut us up. It didn't work then and it won't work now. I hope you get angry enough to say what you really feel.

You think I'm telling you to shut up BECAUSE your black? Get real man, that's the kind of sympathy I'm talking about...

I didn't say racism was the party, read it again

And obviously your gonna have alot of companies owned by white people; they make up the majority of our country's population for crying out loud. There's also alot of black people in high up positions

I'm totally against slavery , but when I see politicians just trying to boost Obama's rep by playing the racist card , I find it ridiculous. I also find it racist of you to be inferring that I'M a racist, but whatever.

You see it as a double standard because you are believer in white supremacy. There is a such thing as black history month because black people were stripped of our history and language when we were brought here as slaves, and told that we were heathens that had no language or history. Every day of every month in America is white pride day. And there is no black pride day. There are college funds for white kids only that were basically created on the backs on black slaves. White enternainment television is television period, and that includes the so called black entertainment television channel. Which is owned by white people and simply tries to immulate the programming of MTV with black faces. BET exploits and makes fools of black people more than anything. And is not a true portrayal of the black community.

Sorry man , but based on your perspective it sounds like your under the impression that everyone's out to get your race and if you're going to act like that in such an ignorant fashion, I can't debate with you because your narrow minded view wouldn't be open to a different perspective anyways...

"You see it as a double standard because you are believer in white supremacy."

Don't assume you know who I am, seriously, that statement sounded unbelievably racist in itself

"Every day of every month in America is white pride day."

Where the hell do you get off saying that?

"White enternainment television is television period, and that includes the so called black entertainment television channel. Which is owned by white people and simply tries to immulate the programming of MTV with black faces. BET exploits and makes fools of black people more than anything. And is not a true portrayal of the black community."

Dude, some black people CHOOSE to be portrayed that way... you think they're being held at gunpoint and forced to maintain a gangster image or they'll meet their death?

Your ignorance is astounding in itself.

What really bothers me is black people expect us to feel guilty for what we (as in me and most people I know) didn't do, just because other sick people shared our skin color in a completely different generation that I never lived in. Don't hold me accountable for actions I didn't commit because I share the same skin color as those that did, that's racist

peplz says:

No. I think your telling me to shut up because you are ignorant and ignorance is bliss. The notion that when someone black may infer something that a white person says or does is racist makes them racist is one of the most baseless ,and frankly, childish assertions that has ever become popularly accepted. Its a knee jerk at the best. And, I don't want and niether does the black community need any sympathy. I guess thats where we can agree.

Posted On: Tuesday, Feb. 24 2009 @ 8:19PM

Black people don't care how you feel. The guilt is your issue. Its not about what your ancestors did to mine necessarily, its about the long term affect that it has had on us and how people like yourself assume that things have changed so much for the better since then, without really taking inventory of the situation. They don't need to hold a gun to anyone's head. All they need to do is reward those the most who behave the worst. You don't really think I'm ignorant. You're just offended. And, I definitely don't need you to explain to me what racism is. I don't need to know who you are, I'm just responding to what you're saying.

Johnny B. Goode says:

I'm gonna call this an argument a day as it's clearly not going anywhere. I don't think either of us will change our perspectives on the matter. Plus, it looks like your done :P

Peplz, I really think you misunderstand white people if you actually believe what you said. By the way you posted, it made it sound like all of us are dominating and clueless as to black culture, which just isn't true. In this day and age, I believe black people have equal (if not more) opportunities to white people.

I hope you don't think of me as a racist either. I'm far from it, in fact. I just hate when people whine (no surprise, I'm not a fan of feminists ;) ). Hopefully you won't harbor any bad feelings, glad we could share different points of view.

Take care man =)

You definitely misunderstood me. But, honestly, I expect that. I say what I truly think in as raw a form as possible. I'm not mad at all. But, I do mean what I say. Defending yourself about not being a racist is highly unnecessary. I would'nt even blame you if you were. I'm a philosopher with an agenda. It is societal norms and the machinations that would intend to operate above our heads that my critique is of, not any particular individual. But I will whole heartedly challenge anyone along the way. And, honestly it really does'nt matter what any of us think of each other because the internet is not the real world and we really don't know each other. I challenge you, all of you to go out and have these kinds of conversations in the real world with real people. People that may have an opposing point of view from yours. Good night and good luck...

Oh my God! Are these the same people that were telling the Muslims to lighten up over Mohammed cartoons? Now they suddenly remembered there are limits to free speech?

How about you go back and take a look at the Constitution and remind yourself that the "freedom of speech" doesn't protect people making unintelligent, insulting, and slanderous comments and in fact any of the Constitution drafters would have shot you square in the chest for insulting them outside the confines of intelligent discourse and debate.

So how about we make our points without resorting to insulting a race or defaming a religion or attacking someone's character - it only serves to distract people from the issues at hand, something Murdoch and Americans in general are very apt at doing!

Answering to gjdagis: a racist person does not deserve any respect. A racist person is an antisocial individual who needs assistance to start respecting her/himself, then respect people of other races in order for society to consider the word respect next to racist, which is preposteruous in my set of values. Learn that gjdagis! as you may be a racist individual yourself who among other things is lacking the sensitivity to the social issue here being discussed
