hueynewton.jpgYou wonder why we seldom leave New York for the hinterlands? Panthers have been sighted in Rockland County. Dorian Tunell says he saw two black panthers in Sparkill's Tallman Mountain State Park. They were "bigger than German Shepherds," he says. Two other women had previously reported seeing big black cats along the Palisades. Troopers say, "We found some prints... they were pretty big." And get this -- there was a panther sighting in New Haven. This panther was also black. Jesus, people -- do we have to spell it out for you? Call the boys at Free Republic and let's get the impeachment started! Photo (cc) cliff1066.

Cathy says:

There are huge black cats running around Rockland County. I spotted what looked like a panther last year on Prospect off of Fremont in Nanuet. It quickly galloped across the street and ran behind a house. I was told I was crazy yet I know what I saw and this is very large animal. No chupacabras, no joke.

Correction: Rockland County is not in CT. It is in NY, just north of Bergen County, NJ.

about 2-3 years ago, i saw an enormous black cat stalking across my neighbor's back yard here in rockland, and i freaked out - OMG a panther! i frantically ran around the house trying to find binoculars but couldn't, and by the time I came back I couldn't see it anymore. later i told my husband i saw a panther in the neighbor's yard, but he dismissed the idea completely and convinced me that it must have been just a large house cat. i decided he must be right because it didn't make any sense otherwise - after all, there are no panthers in america, right? for weeks afterwards i would look down the hill at their yard and try to figure out how i lost all sense of size and proportion. now i wonder if i didn't see one after all.

most of you are idiots. they are coyotes. panthers cannot exist in rocklands climate, no droppings have ever been found, nor footprints. uninformed people should stop causing problems and bothering the cops.

you sir are the idiot says:

they can't be coyotes they look completely different and the coloring is different and the size is different. seeing as you probably don't live in the area or watch the news there have been large cat owners whose pets escaped. There have been leopards and other large cats which have been in the wild here, but the owners have reported the escapes in the past. so before you start acting like the bringer of fire, do some research and get your head out of your ass.

The OUTSIDE IN Piermont says:

Black Panther Attack Thwarted By Palisades Artist Grace Knowlton At The OUTSIDE IN Piermont, NY.

Nationally Renowned Artist Donates A Percentage Of Sales From New Mixed Media Works To Aid Community.

Piermont, NY August 14, 1999.

Grace Knowlton and The Outside In Piermont have agreed to donate a percentage of sales from an upcoming show to assist a tracker in finding and removing black panther(s) that have sighted in Palisades, NY from the area. The artist and owners believe that, even if the panther(s) fade to legend, action must be taken because, if true, someone could become seriously injured, or even worse. Black Panthers are carnivorous and will eat anything when hungry, including humans. The OUTSIDE IN Piermont will host the new mixed media works of nationally known artist Grace Knowlton Piermont from September 17th through November 2nd, 2009, with an opening reception on Sunday September 20th from 2-5pm.

The show represents the new mixed media works by artist Grace Knowlton. This work consists of hand-altered digital prints depicting once everyday, now discarded sawhorses. Knowlton captures these accessible, utilitarian objects with a handheld digital camera. The objects are then removed or abstracted from their surrounding context by washes of pastel, paint and ink inviting a play of line, angle and spatial relationship, subsequently revealing anthropomorphic images that appear to recede or to emerge dimensionally from the prints. Knowlton's treated photos are a significant departure from the work for which she is most known, particularly her three dimensional spheres, 10 of which are part of the Storm King Art Center's permanent collection.

Grace Knowlton received her MFA from Columbia University and has taught at the Art Students League among other teaching posts. Nationally known, Ms. Knowlton has been widely exhibited and is represented in many public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Newark Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England and others.

The OUTSIDE IN Piermont, an unusual gallery representing the unique pursuits of well over one hundred artists and artisans, the majority of whom are located within the Hudson Valley region. The OUTSIDE IN Piermont specializes in handmade pieces for the home and beyond; from furniture to benches, pottery to sculpture and paintings to plants. The OUTSIDE IN Piermont is located at 249 Ferdon Avenue, nestled along the Sparkill Creek ~0.25mi southwest of downtown Piermont. Hours of operation are 11 AM - 6 PM Thursdays through Sunday and by appointment.

Tom Lake says:

Show me a body! People see Alien extraterrestrials as well. There is no empirical evidence of those either. There is not one irrefutable piece of evidence of a mountain lion (i.e., panthers) in the Hudson Valley. If they are here, sooner or later there is a roadkill or a good photo-op (see Moose). In this case, like Aliens and Bigfoot, there is always fuzzy evidence masquerading as proof. Could there be? Certainly. But how about we wait until we have either a verifiable photo or some DNA. Show some critical thinking, please.
