Ross Douthat New Times Rightwing Columnist

douthathead.jpgTo replace departed token overt conservative Billy Kristol, the New York Times has engaged rightblogger Ross Douthat of the The Atlantic. A colleagues kvells; the Times seems excited at how young their new columnist is (Only 29! Why, Scotty Reston was still a copy-boy at 29!) Douthat's old archives at The American Scene, the publisher of his most hilarious material, appear to be scrubbed, but to get a sense of what you Times readers in for, here are some of his available greatest hits:

Douthat complains that liberal novelists won't write about Republican heroes ("It suggests that there aren't any interesting Republicans in our fiction not because Republicans aren't interesting, but because our intelligentsia's political prejudices blind them...").

Douthat explains why he would vote for Diaperepublican David Vitter before he'd vote for Barack Obama ("Regretting the passing of a particular moral standard does not require one to always vote as if that standard were still in place").

Douthat reasons that even sex-and-swears-soaked TV shows like The Sopranos are really conservative and evangelicals should watch them ("it's clear that Lost ultimately shares with Battlestar Galactica a certain degree of cosmic optimism").

Douthat bemoans the moral hazard posed by Jennifer Aniston's waxed pubic hair ("As with breast implants, it's another instance of modern women taking their sexual cues from pornography...").

Douthat philosophizes on why, in his experience, women "have a certain amount of difficulty having orgasms."

We could do this all day, but don't want to spend another minute reviewing Douthat's work. (Oh, okay, one more: here's Douthat begging somebody to dig up another Bill Clinton sex scandal.) In short, he's a little crazier than Kristol, not to mention much more Jesus-y, and his appointment will probably have the same galvanic effect on our culture as Michael Steele's historic election to chairman of the RNC. As a friend put it, Douthat's VORP isn't bad. Hopefully they got him a lot cheaper than Kristol. If he writes awkwardly about sex on a regular basis, it's just icing.

Can we get a pic of Jennifer Aniston to go with moral hazard post?

Not surprisingly, they missed a chance to go with a smart, non-insane conservative like Daniel Larison.

Oh well, Douthat seems to have some of the Victorian sexual hangups of other young conservatives like The Virgin Ben, so this could still be worthwhile.

There is probably a very simple explanation as to why Douthat thinks women "have a certain amount of difficulty having orgasms." Unfortunately, my Victorian sensibilities prevent me from being more detailed, but perhaps he needs a small lesson in anatomy.

Or perhaps he's just a lousy lay.

Oh leave little Douthat alone.

He had his Buckley moment at Harvard, graduated natch, published a book, got attention. Attention+Harvard=NY Times gig.

BTW, what happened to that other Harvard loon who a few years back published the book claiming the end of irony? Maybe he can take over for MoDo, once she's finally committed?

Greg says:

I dunno Roy, maybe I'm going soft, but I really liked the Sopranos/Lost/BSG essay--I don't think there's anything in there the creators of all three shows would disagree with. And, if he actually read the comments responding to his first post, maybe he got his head straightened out on why there aren't any great recent Republican novels. He did not take an active role in killing health care in 1993, unlike Kristol, and thus is not directly responsible for the preventable deaths of 18,000 Americans a year, again unlike Kristol. He was not powerful enough to have the neocons' ears when advocating for a murderous war that left over 900,000 Iraqi civillians and over 4,000 U.S. soldiers dead, which again distinguishes him from Kristol. And he does not appear on Fox News with regularity.

Heck, he's not a smarmy liar pretending to be a cultural anthropologist, so he may even be not as bad as David Brooks.

Heck, he's not a smarmy liar pretending to be a cultural anthropologist~ no, he's a vindinctive wingnut who'd vote Gop when it meant voting for a corrupt perverted cretin instead of a good man.

No excuses for Douchebag please. He's about to continue the NYT's grand tradition of lying about democrats, smearing democrats and making shit up to denigrate democrats.

Martin Wisse says:

Douthat's greatest crime is that he's only 29 but writes like an old man in his seventies. He's way too young to tell those kids to get off his lawn.

Susan of Texas says:

Douthat is a good, good, special moral person and you all are just haters. Why, just recently he scolded Ta-Nehisi Coates for not marrying the mother of his child, and he did it for us, the little people, who couldn't survive without Douthout's moral guidance. But Douthat does have mercy--he said nothing about a white Atlantic writer "living in sin."

And Douthat will keep other people in line too. When Damon Linker criticiized basing decisions on irrational belief, Douthat had him crawing back for forgiveness. Douthout then patted him on the head and all was well.

No doubt as the nation sinks further into economic turmoil Douthat will be right there for all of us sinners, reminding us that poverty is the way to godliness, and aren't we lucky to live in such Godly times.

(Only 29! Too bad Douthat was too old to serve on 9/12/01, thats when my best friend enlisted at 30, died at 34 on his second trip. Thank god we have 'conservative' voices like Douthat alive and well to tell the rest of us exactly why We are stupid and weak.)

Steven Duque says:

An interesting take on Douthat's earlier career by Greg Atwan, Author of "Privilege" and "The Facebook Book:

http://bigthink.com/blog_entries/498-A-Portrait-of-Ross-Douthat-as-a-Young-Republican

EXCERPT:
"There’s a lot of promise in conservative circles—and terror in liberal ones—that Douthat (DOW-thut) can return the loyal-opposition spot at the paper of record to its Safirian glory days: He seems to possess neither Kristol’s wince-worthy GOP-line orthodoxy nor David Brooks’ exhausting tepidness. And unlike both, but like Safire, he’s a gorgeous prose stylist. Privilege, his memoir of being the odd thinker out at another giant, floundering liberal institution—Harvard College—is honeyed and beautiful and worth picking up for, if nothing else, a shockingly non-homoerotic narrative of skinny-dipping with the late William F. Buckley."

Ralph Dratman says:

Douthat is only speculating about the orgasm thing. Obviously he has no useful evidence on the subject. The trick is caring about one's partner, Ross! But Republican thinkers can't master that skill. My advice: give it up.

Besides, achieving any success in that realm might put your Republican hatefulness in jeopardy. A right-wing columnist without deep disdain for all living creatures has nothing to write about.

In fairness, there may be a few hetero Republican lover boys who know how to please the ladies, Ross, but I don't think at this late date you can afford the risk of actually loving another person.

Forget about your female problem, Ross. Just keep on following the money and the prestige. Above all, hold onto your Times gig! It's a lifetime appointment. As long as you can avoid collecting a soul somewhere along the way, you will be able spout hateful nonsense until your fishy corpse starts to stink the place up. Until then, work hard at being an infuriating lout, and the Times is guaranteed to find you unconditionally fit to print.
