Billy Bob Thornton: Asshole, Genius, or Both?

By Roy Edroso, Thursday, Apr. 9 2009 @ 12:51PM

Categories: It came from YouTube, The Arts

Well, it's not as spectacular as Joaquin Phoenix's mumblefest on David Letterman. In fact, Billy Bob Thornton -- interviewed here with his band the Boxmasters for a radio show -- seems quite lucid, but behaves like a total asshole. It starts about 1:15 in, when the DJ asks when the band formed, and Thornton says "I don't know what you're talking about." Later the DJ asks Billy Bob what he's learned from Willie Nelson, with whom he is on tour, and BB says he never met him. All of his answers are stark non-sequiturs or bitching about the asking of unauthorized questions concerning his acting career. The other nervous-looking band members pick up the slack.

It's strange and funny and becoming controversial, but then you ask yourself: why was this radio interview filmed? And then it hits you: this is the best way Billy Bob can publicize his largely unknown band -- by pretending to be weird. Hell, who would have seen Phoenix rap if they didn't hear he was nuts?

This guy rose to the top in Hollywood despite his unprepossessing looks. He's no dummy. We hope next he does an entire interview as the guy from Sling Blade. h/t Jeremy.

Bamboozled says:

You can sense immediately the tension in the room in the faces of the band members. The are displaying an outward tension as if though they are in a board meeting of a contentious organization with an exploitive, abusive and contentions boss in this case being the “musician” Billy Bob Thornton.

In all the interviews I have seen I have never seen such a repugnant display. The best I can compare it to is what one sometimes experiences when dealing with an outraged upper-middle class pompous ass that often refers to his attorney while screaming at you for some benign event that he has perceived as violating his personal boundaries.

I feel sympathy for Jian Ghomeshi having seen this type of behavior in pseudo high society circles such as a B-list actor castigating a helpless waiter at a Hollywood restaurant. Perhaps his excuse is that there was an antique harpsichord or flatware in the studio.

Get a grip “Astronaut Farmer.”

Thornton isn't a very wordly guy. Some say he may be a genius. Let's be honest folks, he's an asshole. His name invokes his back woods behaviour. Can't sing, poor drummer/musician and frankly a bit of a wierd looking character. The reason Canadians are "reserved" Billy Bob is because they're polite. Rather than boo you off the stage they just bear up until your portion of the concert is over. That means Canadians are honest, but polite. Something you couldn't begin to understand. Now go back to the holler you were sponned in.

If he truly cared about his band and his music he would have left the room and allowed his bandmates to continue the interview. Instead he just hogged and wasted perfectly good air time by being so obtuse and immature. There wasn't one question asked about his acting or his acting career - it was just an intro - get over it.

If Tom Petty decided to start an acting career and an interviewer mentioned his past as a musician, or his passion for acting, I would only assume he would have responded to the question with grace.

Having been to concerts on either side of the border I can attest that the reaction of the crowd seems pretty universal. If your getting a mediocre crowd response, I have a feeling it may have little to do with borders.

Understandable, (slightly) if there were ground rules the interviewer broke by talking about acting, BUT HE ASKED HIM a handful of music questions in a row that BBT refused to answer? I'd be the first to criticize a jerk interviewer but BBT was WAAAAYYYY out of line.

It's too funny how mediocre performers come to Canada and get pissed off when we don't kiss their untalented butts. Or worse still, great entertainers that charge a fortune for their show, give a flat performance, and have the gall to call Canadian audiences cold if we don't respond like sycophants. It's called the entertainment "business" and if the so-called talent can't deliver a good product, audiences will respond in kind.

Billy Bob Thornton is a friggin genius. Anyone who is open-minded enough to get past his name would see that. BUT that said, I do think he was stoned during this interview. If it were just the interview, you could say that he just had the worst interview day of his life. But he has gone on to lie about what he said when he said Canadian audiences were mashed potatoes without the gravy because the didn't throw things at each other. He claimed the comment was about "the interviewer", Jian, who had to put up with Billy Bob's totally childish and idiotic behavior.

I'll predict that Billy Bob will find that interview will follow him around. If he cares at all for his band and the public, he should apologize to Jian and the CBC audience. As a Canadian, I couldn't care less what Billy Bob says about us.

So the guy was very obsessive about his acting career NOT being mentioned in the interview, for whatever reasons but the interviewer threw it in anyway figuring Thornton would have to play nice on the air. And he has anger management issues and couldn't get past it. I'm not condoning his assholatry, but it seems like the interviewer is an asshole too. He should have said he doesn't want to do an interview unless he can mention Thornton's "other" career. Kind of slimy to just drop it in.

I'll echo what others have already said about BBT being a total jerk. I'm surprised that some people think Jian is somehow partly to blame because he mentioned, in passing, Billy Bob's high profile acting career. He didn't ask BBT any questions about his acting, choosing to focus on the band and its accomplishments, so WTF? BBT thinks he can direct and dictate the course of the interviews, does he?

Ghomeshi was the consummate professional; BBT was the consummate ass hat.

Makes the prospect of an interview with Miley Cyrus, Larry the Cable Guy, or Sarah Palin look positively irresistible. At least those three have some energy.

The band members weren't much better than BBT. None of them wanted to be there. What happened, did someone put guns to their heads and force them into that studio? If you hate interviews that much, don't do them and let the work speak for itself, if it can.

No, I don't think BBT was stoned or drunk; if anything, he was intoxicated by his own high opinion of himself.

BBT will have the last laugh, though, all the way to the bank. He's scored a motherlode of free publicity that his own musical chops would never have attracted.

Born and raised in the US and now living in its Bible Belt, I'm embarrassed by BBT's behavior in Canada. I'm glad he was booed and forced to cancel remaining Boxcutters' performances there. I was impressed with the character he created for Slingblade, and I sensed that there was something confessional about the character, as if BBT was revealing a side of himself. I've never followed Billy Bob Thornton's offscreen escapades much, nor did I see this interview; so I'll take other folks' word for it that he can behave like a cad and a jerk. But what puzzles me here are the disparaging remarks about his looks. Hello?? From what I've seen of him, he's one helluva good-looking man; maybe just attractive when he was younger, but with his grey hair, mustache and goatee, he has become quite the sexy silver fox. (Something like a cross between Sting and Jim Jarmusch, I'd say. Not to imply that they should have children together, of course.) Given the vast preponderance of actors in Hollywood these days who range from Blech to Blerk-worthy, BBT stands out as one of the few truly handsome men on the silver screen. (Along with the utterly gorgeous Johnny Depp, of course, who sets the standard for beautiful men in Hollywood.) BBT is, however woefully too skinny. Put some pounds on, BBT, if you're going to do the alpha male thing; scrawny is so Not Macho.

I mean thornton might come back with "well you're no Charlie Rose", to which the appropriate report is obvious. probably he'd have walked out of the studio. But at least the rest of us would not have been subjected to his completely douchbaggian performance.

Bobby Bill says:

The Boxmasters best move at this point would be firing Billy Bob as their drummer.

While the headlines are HOT, make some more. Capitalize on the publicity they've gained from BBT's hillbilly moron act, and build on it by canning this idiot's ass.

Note to Canada Customs:
Billy Bob Thornton is known to smuggle cocaine in condoms up his rectum when visiting Canada. Each border crossing, I recommend a thorough body cavity search. Find the biggest, coldest hands you can for the job.

thank you Bobby Bill for this vital information. Rest assured that we will be closing in on BBT soon, and when we do we will have one of our agents, "Itchy" Ike Ignotowski do the body cavity search. He'll be assisted by Paul "Pussball" Rizzo, another one of our fine agents, in this endeavor.

We depend on tips from citizens such as yourself to keep us informed in these matters. for your much appreciated help we are sending you the latest Boxcutter's CD. please feel free to use it to wipe your ass when you just don't want to waste valuable toilet paper.

would you say that to billy bob thornton?

Mike says:

Oh, it would have been fucking hilarious if Jian had asked Billy Bob if Angelina had seen him play and if so what she thought or if only her tattoo had seen him play and if so what it thought.

Ghomeshi should have taken the opportunity to put the lie to Canadian stereotypes and leap across the table to punch that fucking weasel right in the chops.

Jimmy Bob says:

I say Genius: In the course of five minute interview he managed to portray: drunk, stoned, stupid, mentally ill, arrogant, insecure, pigheaded, desperate, pathetic, and even a little constipated; completely believably. Oscar winner indeed. He should tour with that performance "Portrait of a post-Bush Texan".

If it looks like an asshole, sounds like an asshole, smells like an asshole ... Billy Boob, you are an asshole. All your crap-ola did was convince me not to listen to your band. I'd feel sorry for the other members, but they calculated on you getting them air time ... not on your skill as a musician. Douchebag.

Craig Eaves says:

Billy Bob Thornton isn't used to rowdy audiences, despite what he said in that interview. Tough guy? He couldn't even handle an interviewer mentioning his movie career. It's pretty obvious that he can only handle ass-kissers that coddle his pathetic fantasies. Props to Ghomeshi who ranked with Obama in maintaining his cool. Thornton doesn't give respect. Doesn't deserve it.
