EXCLUSIVE: Reading Julissa Brisman's Diary

By Yevgeniya Shekhtman

Julissa Brisman, the victim of the so-called Craigslist Killer, had successfully stopped drinking and was trying to repair past relationships and get her life on track when she was murdered, according to her personal journal, which was reviewed by the Voice.

"I had a taste of the sober life, and I liked it," wrote Brisman in the last entry in her journal, noting that she had gotten a tattoo on her foot of the date of her sobriety and hoped she wouldn't relapse. "So why do this to myself; All the pain, humiliation and suffering [punctuation hers]. That was September 19, 2008 and I haven't touched a drink since."

Brisman, 25 at the time of her death, was beaten and shot to death April 14th in a Boston hotel room. Med student Philip Markoff, 23, of Quincy, Mass., has been arrested on murder and robbery charges.  He pleaded not guilty in an arraignment last week, and has been placed on suicide watch. Boston police say Markoff contacted Brisman through an advertisement placed on Craigslist, the popular classified ad website. Markoff, authorities say, allegedly committed at least two other robberies of women to finance a gambling habit.

Brisman kept her handwritten journal, which was decorated with a beach scene, on a shelf among a collection of books about Marilyn Monroe...

The front cover of the journal reprinted the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr's prayer, which is often cited by people in recovery from drugs and alcohol: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference."

Brisman lived in a small one-bedroom with a roommate in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. A member of the animal rights group PETA, she was devoted to her dog, which she named Coco Chanel. She kept a framed picture of her and the dog on a night table next to her bed. The room was also decorated with a large poster of Marilyn Monroe and a Monroe calender.

Brisman had been a bartender, but she quit to avoid being around alcohol. Instead, she supported herself by working at times in a tanning salon, freelance modeling gigs, occasional acting jobs, and advertising herself as a masseuse, according to her roommate, Max Kuperman, 22. Her work kept her out of town quite a bit.

Kuperman tells the Voice that he recalls being concerned about her line of work. "I warned her about all the guys," he says. "I warned her so many times that she should watch out for all these perverts out there.  I wish I tried harder."

Curiously, it doesn't appear that Brisman ever wrote in the diary about her side job as a masseuse. But, in one lengthy entry after another stretching over two years, Brisman poured out her innermost feelings. At one point, she made a list of her fears, which included death, sharks, needles and lobsters.

Her worst fear, she wrote, was relapsing. "Once that happens I'll be a gonner [goner] probably, and what will happen to my family, friends, acting, LIFE?! I love sobriety and I'm afraid to ever lose it."

Brisman had the revelation that she needed to stop drinking almost two years ago, adding that she began drinking heavily while working as a bartender.

"I woke up April 14 and said no, I can't do this anymore," she writes. "I'm turning 24 in two weeks and need to change!"

Brisman made notes in the journal on how to improve her past relationships.  She made a list of 36 people that she felt had either wronged or had wronged her, and how she would repair the damage.

Of one of her friends, she writes, "I should have stopped hanging out with her when I realized she was only my friend when we were doing drugs or drinking."

Brisman was proud of her sobriety, and she felt like she needed to be a good role model for her younger sister. In one notable entry, she describes what her mother told her on Mother's Day.

"I asked ma what she wanted for Mother's Day and she said ' I already got the best Mother's Day you could ever give me, your sobriety,'" she wrote. "Put a smile on my face.  I know cheesy, but being sober makes me smile."

In another entry, she wrote, "Today I went to a women's meeting in LA and I got a 30-day chip, and a welcome chip! Yay!"

Brisman hoped to become a drug counselor, and was studying toward that goal.

Brisman's friend Kinga described her as a "beautiful person inside and out." She was "full of energy" and "always there to count on."

"We are still going to celebrate her birthday April 24th, she'll always be in our heart," Kinga said last week prior to Brisman's birth date.  "I hope that bastard pays for what he did to my dear friend."

I would like to comment on my dear friend Julissa Brisman; the short term that we worked at Aldo Shoes in 17th and 5th avenue was amazing. She was a beautiful person inside out, always smiling and yes she loved Marliyn Monroe. But she will be missed and I hope that bastard pay for eveything and that is guilt hunts him for life.

Lee says:

So turning tricks means you deserve to die? This girl was beautiful...she was trying hard to turn her life around, and some psycho who has the perception of a good man with good values from a good family took that away from her and somehow thats her fault?

I look forward to the day we can see him locked behind bars for the REST OF HIS YOUNG LIFE where he will grow old and have to live with what he did every second, minute and hour of the day.

Barry says:

She was a beautiful young woman, judging from the photograph published with this article. Given her determination to retain her sobriety and her history in legitimate employment, where does the prostitution fit in? I'm not judging, just curious. And sympathetic.

Wow... It always freaks me out to see people who seem like they should have everything going in their direction struggling with things that everyone else seems to... I'm sorry to see someone with a heart and soul as she taken so violently... Not sure if it matters to her, but hopefully justice will be done - at least on that account. The other balance, no doubt, will still be waiting to be repaid...

I hope she is at least at peace and my heart goes out to those who were her friends and loved ones.

she was a prostitute. Let;s be real. this guy killed her with a gun. sHE WAS A HOOKER DOING A REALLY DANGEROUS JOB. YOU IDIOTS IN NYC DO NOT HAVE HALF THE PICTURE.she was no victim.

Lindsay Beyerstein says:

Cops have dangerous jobs. When they are murdered, they are victims. How hard is it to wrap your mind around the idea that when you are murdered, you are a victim?

Times are tough all over. Read the papers, U.S. and international, story after story about people who started selling their bodies to get by.

Desperation will do that to a person. Julissa could have been your sister or your friend. We don't know what people do behind closed doors.

To Sunil: She was a masseuse, not a prostitute. Did you know her? I did.

Since when does anyone deserve to die? If she was taking risks by doing sensual massage that's fine and she could have been arrested. But death?

You say nothing about Philip Markoff. Is he abrogated because she was doing something illegal?

You may not be an idiot, but your comments sure make me think you play one on TV.

Sunil says:

Yeha, right. She used guys for sex. She charged them to have sex. A legitimate massage is run from a real address, not a hotel. Could have been arrested for what? Jerking a guy off? She was a prostitute. She was a total loser. She was not an actor. She was a seriously demented crackhead. She could have given Markoff her money. She would still be alive today. Markoff, another freak from NYC, was trolling for trannies, too. Did he kill them? Nope.

16 panties were recovered from the Markoff apartment, and not a single other prostitute has come forward. I have a question , do these professional ladies give massages naked, and if they start out fully naked how are the panties on the floor for markoff to take it when he leaves!
Prostitution is the easy way out! These girls want to have all thier expensive clothes, hair colors and get it by prostituting themselves, while the rest of us with college degrees work in a $10/hr job. It would have been far better if these bitches' moms had got an abortion instead of giving birth to these suckers. May be they were former prostitutes themselves, who wanted to be on welfare as single moms!

Michelle says:

Some of you people are sick. You have such hatred for prostitutes but you are OK with child molesters and murderers. She was a beautiful young woman, a human like you and I, who did not deserve her life taken from her. Markoff is a sick ****, what don't you understand? Sunil, you are just another misogynist from India who feels like women should live like the year 1086 and probably abort female fetuses. Your country has more AIDS cases than any other country in the world with your idiotic misogyny.

Posted On: Sunday, May. 3 2009 @ 10:13PM
Michelle says:

And Geena. You are another female woman hater. I know plenty of women like you who have been relatively lucky in your life and proceed to have no empathy for your fellow human being, especially if they are the same gender as you. Other victims have come forward. Geena, you are no better than a prostitute or any other human being. You are sick to think that another human deserves to loose their life in such a sad way.

nn says:

Hey Michelle,

Those people's comments are misguided - there's nothing wrong with sensual massage, prostitution or any other sex work - but there's also nothing inherently wrong with people from India, or fortunate women from anywhere. But I think you know that and let them troll you.

Very sorry to read of this case - Brisman seems like she'd worked hard to overcome a lot in her too-short life. I tended bar for a while too, and yes it really can lead to alcoholism (though so can a lot of other things). But I sure wouldn't want someone leaking my diary on the village voice after I was randomly killed by another kind of addict.

One thing I do have to correct - no one can "sell their body". You can and do sell services you perform with your body (I do this every time I go to work). Everyone has a right to do that in mutually consensual ways, which are none of your business if you're not involved in the transaction - 'nuff said.

seann, she was a "rub 'n tug" girl. Got guys off with her hot looks. You can rationalize that all you want, but when these girls get arrested, they asre charged with the same prostitution that "real" prostitutes (like her) get charged with.

Don't get caught-up in the whole "Bill Clinton got a blow-job that's not sex" argument.

Friend of Bill W's says:

What self-righteous glory is gained frome attacking someone who cannot speak for herself? How does that action make the speaker more "pure" or a better person that this young lady who was murdered. For whatev er reason she was where she was she was still murdered. Anyone shot several times while fighting for her life is a victim, she did not have a weapon to defend herself. She was a victim. She was murdered. Philip Markoff had ppled NOT GUILTY so no one knows if there was anything sexual happening in the hotel room. Doesn't sound like there was time for anything remotely sexual to take place. JULISSA GRISMAN did not live off the government. she was supporting herself by performing a service, whatever that may or may not be. She wasn't the one with a gun out robbing and taking what was nopt rightfully hers from people physically weaker than herself. Let this girl lie in peace and let her family heal. That is what you would like if it had been a loved one of yours, isn't that right? Too many people have already been tormented and their lives changed because of what happened. Let's focus on the next right course of action and in being true to urselves and to others. Tearing another down is not the answer. Let the 12 jurors be the ones who decide what happened behind those closed doors as they will be better informed of the truth than any of us ever will. Let's move on. Let this young lady rest in peace, it isn't too much to ask, really. Let the others heal and let the justice system do whaat it must with the murderer and the one who tormented other females. Anyone who has a gun pointed at them or force is used in order for another to gain their property or person is a victim. Change the things you can. It is the best way to make a difference in your world. And pray for the wisdom to iknow what is possible for your to change and what things you cannot. And if you aren't sure, well...then keep your mouth shut. It's the best way in the world to NOT look stupid.

Ian says:

Not to demean her but she was arrested twice... once for stealing almost $ 4k from Macy's and another time which is sealed by court order now where she also did time in jail.

She ain't an innocent sweetheart, and sooner or later being in this kind of environment (i.e prostitution and felons) can only lead to a tragedy.

Countless young women have it rough but do not resort to being "masseuses" or theft.

She would have been fine doing office work... in the end we can only look ourselves to blame for what can happen.

Disgusting. God didn't kill this girl. That sick bastard did. And before you go quoting Bible scripture think of all the situations in which people die that aren't related to sex-sex industry. You're sick. Hide behind your God's skirt, but eventually you will also die, as will we all. Struggling out of poverty and low-living is not easy, and we all make mistakes. ALL FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY, you stupid hypocritical bastard.
