In Swine Flu, Some Crown Heights Lubavitchers See Signs of the Messiah

The onset of swine flu has inspired all sorts of different reactions. President Barack Obama is telling Americans to do common sense things like not go to school if you feel sick (Thanks, Barack!) Rightbloggers and folks like Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio are using it to unleash anti-immigrant sentiment and attack the government for failing to seal the borders.

Sara Kanevsky, a Hasidic woman we wrote about last summer, believes that swine flu may signify the hailing of the messiah.

For Kanevsky and thousands of others in Crown Heights who believe the late Lubavitch rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (pictured) is the messiah, swine flu is yet another sign of redemption on earth. According to Jewish texts, in the time of redemption, all things that are unkosher (traif is the more-common yiddish word) will become holy.

"Why is the pig getting so much attention right now?" Kanevsky asked a Voice reporter. "There is great significance to this."

Only animals that chew their cud (the digestive process by which cows and other animals regurgitate their food in order to digest it twice) are considered kosher. Kanevsky says she plans to begin making a round of phone calls to local farms to see if pigs have begun to digest differently. Of course, she will have to call non-Jewish farms, since Jewish farms are unlikely to be raising pigs in the first place.

I can tolerate these nutjobs, they aren't blowing up pig farms that offend them.

Don't incur the wrath of the one true Bacon God, looking at you Egypt which is stepping up the constant persecution of Coptics by destroying their livelihoods under the guise of swine flu.

Yet another hatchet job by the VV based on poor journalism... This is one chemically imbalanced woman who should be on meds and the VV positions her as a representative of the community which thinks she's crazy.

Shame on Dwoskin for selling her journalistic and personal integrity for some cheap sensationalism...

Spot on analysis, BenP! The writer is clearly one of those bug eyed, Hillary Clinton-loving lesbians. Why else would someone make light of an issue as serious as piggy flu?

Journalist says:

"For .. thousands .. in Crown Heights who believe the late Lubavitch rabbi .. is the messiah, swine flu is yet another sign of redemption on earth."

Improvement: For the thousands in Crown Heights for whom the Messiah is not an immediate concern, Sara Kanevsky and her 5 friends (who have recently been divided over her exceeding diversion from Jewish law) are an aberration; for instance, she finds that swine flu is yet another sign of redemption on earth.

"According to Jewish texts, in the time of redemption, all things that are unkosher will become holy."

Improvement: According to some ancient homiletic (non-legal) texts, God will "return" the Pig to the Jewish people after Messiah redeems them. Many prominent scholars (the Lubavitcher Rebbe among them) do not consider that a legal (and literal) statement. Sara Kanevsky (whose husband was compelled to divorce over ceasing to practice Jewish law) and one friend though, believe that Judaism now somehow supports the consumption of porcine products, and that swine flu somehow signifies the hailing of the messiah.

BenP and Journalist - well put! Kanevsky is women with serious mental issues. It's an embarrassment to anyone with a shred of journalistic integrity to engage with that woman!

Milhouse says:

Correction to "Journalist": You're right that Sara Kanevsky is literally insane, and her rantings are not representative of even the most radical messianics in Crown Heights. But the Lubavitcher Rebbe did accept the "pigs will be kosher" text as literally true.

Go around Crown Heights and ask people, without reference to current events, whether when Moshiach comes pigs will become kosher, and you will get nearly 100% saying yes. Ask them whether they think this is happening right now, and they'll look at you like you're crazy.
