Ross Douthat: Drop Abortion Rights and Your Doctors Will Be Allowed to Live

Categories: Exploring the Right Wing Blogosphere
douthathead.jpgThe first line of promoted blogger Ross Douthat's latest column for the Times: "The case of Dr. George Tiller, murdered just over a week ago in the lobby of his church, helps explain why so many people believe that abortion should be available at any stage of pregnancy." He goes on to say that many of Tiller's late-term patients were indeed in difficult straits, and that "Tiller thought he was doing the Lord's work." Nonetheless, "his critics were convinced that he performed them not only in truly desperate situations, but in many other cases as well." And what do you know -- Douthat thinks so too, based on evidence such as "a 2006 investigation -- suggesting that Tiller abused the state's mental-health exemption to justify late-term abortions in almost any situation."

Tiller was cleared of these charges in court, but no matter: "If anything," reasons Douthat, "by enshrining a near-absolute right to abortion in the Constitution, the pro-choice side has ensured that the hard cases are more controversial than they otherwise would be." And controversy causes killing, so we must end it -- preferably, in his view, by overturning Roe v. Wade and returning abortion to the "democratic process," by which abortion may be allowed or made a hanging offense depending on the jurisdiction.

"The result," concludes Douthat, "would be laws with more respect for human life, a culture less inflamed by a small number of tragic cases -- and a political debate, God willing, unmarred by crimes like George Tiller's murder." So, see, Douthat gets the end of abortion on demand, and you heathens get killed less often by rightwing nuts; he's meeting you halfway. Somewhere Bill Kristol is saying to himself, "Why didn't I think of that?"

This is what happens when the dinosaurs at the Times editorial board get worried about not being "with it." They go and hire a numbnut blogger from the minor ranks of the right wing and come up with such silliness.

John Clavis says:

Let's not forget that, to the right, there is no such thing as ''far-right'', only people who fail to cloak their in the appropriate Luntzian buzzwords and framing so as to avoid embarassing their side. Also notice that the notion that the left has any moral leg to stand on gets very little consideration...

Brooks and Friedman alone couldn't handle the dozens of Liberal voices on the Op-Ed pages of the NY Times. They had to hire "Douche-hat" to help counter the dozens of Liberal's they have on the Op-Ed pages of the NY Times.
OK, not dozens of voices on the Op-Ed pages of the NY Times - OK, ONE! Krugman.
Also, after the firing of Kristol, the NY Times found it had a shortage of insipid writers on its Op-Ed pages. Enter Douche-hat!

PS: This is the same reasoning that led to John Yoo's hiring in Pilly.

"less inflamed by a small number of tragic cases" nice. i guess that's exactly how the press reacted to a small number of terrorists after 9/11.

Green Eagle says:

All of these discussions seem to ignore the actual details of Dr. Tiller's practice.

Far from offering late term abortion "on demand," Dr. Tiller accepted no requests from patients and only took cases referred to him by other physicians. Furthermore, he had a specific list of severe birth defects which formed the only basis for his accepting patients. This is in total contrast to the claims of the people who hounded him to death, and reveals them as the morally repugnant liars they are.

If some angry pro-choicer kicks the crap out of Ross Douthat, I will be happy to suggest that such violence might have been avoided if only the anti-abortion whackos were more open to compromise.

Accompanied by him slapping himself in the forehead, no doubt. Only one problem with that:

With North Korea's recent actions raising the possibility (in Kristol's mind, at least) of a military solution, he's been too busy slapping another part of his body to read - hell, to notice - anything written in the Times.

WooHoo!! King of the Masturbators weighs in on abortion.

I'd rush right over to see what sort of lipstick-smeared strumpets cavort inside Douthat's pea brain, but I'm afraid I'd find myself longing for the good old days when the NYT routinely gave up part of its Op-Ed page to Mobil and Union Carbide.

All your wombs is belong to us. Keerist, it's just so annoying, and especially to see him soiling the pages of the NY Times with his brain droppings. But, the quality of news is no longer "fit to print" at the NYT, it's "all the news that fits" (with apologies to Mad Magazine.) Douthat is turning out to be about as bad as Kristol, and equally fact free. Ross: if it's not your womb, it's really none of your business.
