Tom Cruise Lured Back Into Scientology By Man The Church Now Says Was "Demoted" And A "Lunatic"

Today, the St. Petersburg Times unveiled part two of its devastating series on David Miscavige, diminutive leader of Scientology.

An indication of how much this series is hitting Scientology to the bone: rare and vehement denunciations by Miscavige himself, and by his spokesman, the clearly in-over-his-head Tommy Davis, son of actress Anne Archer.

The St. Pete Times series packs a punch because it's based on interviews with two of the formerly most high-ranking figures in the church: Marty Rathbun, once considered the best "auditor" in the Hubbard technology game, and Mike Rinder, once the church's top spokesman (and Davis's predecessor).

Predictably, Scientology is hitting back by trying to smear the two of them. If they were once the most trusted, most powerful members of the church, now suddenly they are lunatic losers who can't be trusted.

Jason Beghe, the actor we have written about since his stunning defection from Scientology a year ago, phoned us this morning to help put in context what the church is claiming about Rathbun in particular.

The Times reporters, for example, were told by church officials that Rathbun had been "demoted" in 2003 for "masquerading as an ethics officer," whatever that means. Davis, meanwhile, calls Rathbun a "lunatic."

Beghe asks: if Rathbun was "demoted" and a lunatic, why did Miscavige give Rathbun one of the most important tasks in Scientology's recent history - luring Tom Cruise back into the church?

"Tom had essentially disconnected from the church for the previous ten years. Most people don't know that," Beghe says. "So if Marty was a lunatic, why would Miscavige give him the job to bring Tom back in, the most important job in the church at that time?"

Beghe says this occurred about four years ago, which would be well after Rathbun's supposed "demotion."

Beghe says that he and Cruise were working with Rathbun at the same time at the Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles. "While I was in session with Marty, Tom was in the waiting room. And vice versa."

"While Marty was auditing Tom, I was the other pre-clear being audited by Marty, who was considered the best auditor on the planet. Do you think Miscavige would send a lunatic to get his top prospect back in the fold?"

"Tommy Davis at that point was an up-and-comer. He was also Tom Cruise's handler," Beghe says. "I spent hours and hours with Tommy Davis and Marty Rathbun together. And I can tell you something, I swear to God. That kid's voice went up an octave when he was around Marty. He fawned on him like Marty was a demigod. He idolized him. Marty was the epitome of what a Sea Org member was supposed to be. And now they're making out that he was demoted? It's bullshit."

I wouldn't feel too sorry for TC. His ego gets a LOT of stroking through his membership in the cult. He won a big-ass scientology medal for his success in penetrating the market and bringing the message of scientology to all us 'wogs' (that would be us non-scientologists)

btw thanks again VV!

Yeah, and well after Rathbun had left the church. Tony, skill up...

It's interesting how when someone makes an accusation against the "church" of scientology, the CofS doesn't respond in a way that disproves the claim, with evidence or some such, they simply go straight for accusation. "This person is a liar, they're pervert, they're paid by psychiatry" What's really funny is that Tommy Davis is usually the first person to call people a lair, even though he's been proven to be one on national television over and over again:

By the cult's own logic, we shouldn't listen to anything they say.

Thanks to Tony Ortega and the Village Voice for posting this article. One of the most crazy regimes in the world today (Miscavige) is becoming one of the most inept. Jason Beghe is a good friend and he's telling the truth. Those of us who worked at the infamous "Int Base" know the facts about Miscavige and believe me, you've only heard the tip of a massive iceberg. There are DOZENS of eye witnesses to Miscavige's violence. Meanwhile Miscavige briefed staff numerous times (myself included) that Marty was "the best in Scientology." Tommy Davis' feeble attempts to discredit the whistle blowers reek of corruption. He wasn't even there!

To further put their responses into perspective I posted an article yesterday detailing exactly how Miscavige gets his blackmail material -- to prevent people from coming forward and blowing the whistle on his criminality. Perhaps your readers may find it interesting. See it at http://www.scientology-cult.com/forced-confessions.html.

Artoo45 says:

I'm not apologizing for the cult and I'm a major critic (see my video link) but yeah, the timeline around the whole demotion thing seems sketchy. Wasn't Beghe an OTIII by the time he blew the cult last year? Why was he being audited as a pre-clear just four years ago? I think you got some of the timeline confused.

Tony O. says:

Beghe left at OTV.

Jason called to say the period when he and Cruise were both being audited by Rathbun would have been more like five years ago, not four - and that it was one of the last things Rathbun worked on before he blew.

Willy Stan Li says:

Interesting, but incomplete or dropped data.

We can see from the comments that there are huge upsets that the parties have not successfully resolved. Together with the apparent mis-understandings and misgivings that the parties have for each other there seems to have been no attempt by the "injured" party to resolve the situation, but only denial or more accusations. These are the bases of incompetent journalism. But controversy sells especially under the guise of truth.

Just one example of at least 5 attempts to mislead & misdirect the reader: The complaints by respected Director, Paul Haggis, against a now passed bill he disagreed with neglects to point out that
many others agreed with that proposal to ban the marriage of Homosexuals. No mention is made as to why "Marriage" (A law that in most countries has the sole purpose of ensuring the procreation and rearing of our next generation) between members of the same sex is not condoned. Such unions have never produced progeny and when condoned do not set a good survival example for those that may wish to emulate or follow this life style.
I know personally several examples in a couple of church denominations where the sexual practices of parishioners are ignored where they do no harm to others. Promiscuity is not condoned and Marriage is spelled out both legally and in church canon. As for Tax benefits there are other options such as the contracts of Partnership, Corporation and such acceptable agreements. If there be a purpose to any binding living or sharing arrangement, then it only need be spelled out legally. No problem!

But let us not infer a confusion by the implicit approval of a same sex union with a "legal marriage" that could never produce offspring or combine genetic material.

Of course, wonderful science may someday develop a parthenogenesis means whereby humans, like the Dandelion, can seed a new generation without the burden of a spouse and the deep governmental pockets can assume the care and raising thereof.

Willy
