NYPD Still Mum On Logo Crackdown, Retirees Not so Mum

nypdbadge.jpgIt's now been 24 hours since the Voice asked Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's spokesman Paul Browne for a comment on the NYPD's campaign to stop its own retirees from using the department logo. (See our story here.)

No response. Not even an acknowledgement that the emails were received. We've now asked Mayor Bloomberg's spokesman for a comment. We shall hold our breath, even as we wonder why Kelly would piss off retired officers at the same time his boss, Bloomberg, is running for a third term.

We did however hear from several retirees who thought the crackdown was another boneheaded move by the Kelly administration.

One of them offered this broadside (anonymously): "Isn't it a great city that we protected? Their undying gratitude kind of brings a tear to the eye. It used to be over-zealous scum from Internal Affairs that we had to worry about in the job. Now we've got to worry about effete guys wearing patent leather shoes from the Trademark Infringement Office pursuing us through the streets like the chase scenes from 'The Seven Ups' or 'The French Connection' because we wore a T shirt with the legend '48 Precinct Annual Picnic 1978.'"

It's a controversy over symbolism, yes, but let's face it: symbolism is a pretty big deal in the NYPD, and among those who gave much of their adult lives to trying to make sure New Yorkers were safe to walk the streets. If you want to weigh in on this, drop us a line at grayman@villagevoice.com.

Sonny Schwaber says:

I can't believe after retiring in 1991, and giving the City 27 years of service, that they would take away our Pride Of Service by wearing an NYPD patch. It's a disgrace,
and uncalled for act by the City of NY. All
organizations (PBA, DEA, SBA, LBA, CBA) should answer the call to duty to back the use of the LOGO by retiries.

HOWARD ROSENFELD says:

WOW HAS IT COME TO THIS?, HOW STUPID AND INSANE TO TRY TO INFORCE THIS. WE ALL RETIREES WEAR OUR PATCHES IN PRIDE AND RESPECT FOR THE JOB WE PUT OUR LIVES INTO AND LOOK BACK IN AT ALL THE GREAT MEN AND WOMEN WE HAVE WORKED WITH. REALLY GET SOMETHING ELSE TO DO WITH YOUR RESOURCES.

Edwin Aviles says:

I just want to add that when we were on Patrol and issuing summonses, we were often asked;"don't you have something better to do than to write a summons? Go fight crime!" Now I have to add: Commissioner, spend the tax payer's money on something more productive like fighting crime. This is a foolish endeavor since, you could never stop the use of the N.Y.P.D. Logos. Remember "N.Y.P.D. Pizza," well I do and it still uses the logo. If you're really serious, you'd better start in your own back yard. Start by cleaning up Canal street vendors first who sell N.Y.P.D. hats, shirts, etc. to all tourist.
By the way, was this action thought out thoroughly before issuing the directive; I think not! Can you imagine, if the US Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines did the same thing. I'm sure you get the idea. Commissioner, I believe you are beginning to fail the citizens of New york City, who pay you well for your administrative qualities. Get back on track and evaluate the possible repercussions of any future and unrealistic policies, don't just react to your emotions think, think, think!
Proud, angry & Retired N.Y.P.D. Lieutenant.
