Upstate Mom-Tasing Cop Defends Actions in Email

By Roy Edroso, Monday, Aug. 31 2009 @ 10:57AM

Categories: Civil Liberties, Crime, Follow-up, It came from YouTube

The Salina, New York sheriff's deputy who tased a young mother last January for lack of cooperation during a traffic stop -- which was caught on the well-viewed video above -- defended his actions in an e-mail (pdf), written shortly after the story broke and recently obtained by the Syracuse Post-Standard. Deputy Sean Andrews suggests in the email that his 30-day suspension was a "completely political move on the sheriff's part because he realizes that the video alone with no explanation does not look good and he feels his job will be in jeopardy."

He says the mother, Audra Harmon, was "argumentative" and that he feared she might be going for a weapon in the car. "I was not going to let her get back inside," writes Andrews, "because if she takes off then I will have a vehicle pursuit with two kids in the car." He also says he didn't tase her very hard, and that "in her interviews, [Harmon] stated how bad it hurt but it is an act to promote sympathy."

Harmon disputes that she made any moves suggestive of retrieval of a weapon, and is suing the sheriff's office over the incident.

"says he didn't tase her very hard"

Did I hear the right?

He must be a socialpath and can't see the harmful effects of his actions. Excusing himself from all wrongs he commits.

spike says:

arm of justice says:

He lacks common sense, and has control issues.
First he wanted her to stay in car, she got out
he ordered her back in. she got in and he ordered her back out.
then ordered the soccer mom to lay down
in the dirty wet street where she would be
in danger, THIS WASN'T A FELONY WARRANT
STOP. It was a soccer mom on the phone.

Under his theory if the kids had got out, he would have tazed them. Couldn't see their hands
while holding mommys convulsing head.

He should be fired and prosecuted,
and he mentions there are 50 more "OFFICERS"
out there who agreed with his actions.

They need to be found and put under close
supervision or fired.

The Sherriff will be supported because
he has some common sense.

Deputy Sean Andrews is a disaster waiting to happen, this won't be the first or last
time he over reacts, and abuses the public.

Soccer mom and sounds like he hunting senior
citizens in his email.

FBI needs to look at him, violation of civil rights.

This alleged sheriff has no concept
degrees, approiateness.

He confuses a minor cell phone traffic
stop with a Felony criminal stop.

He is a danger to the Public.

armedcitizen says:

is it really that hard to listen?

if a cop says stay in the car, its for a reason, everyone's safety.

She then refuses and he tells her she's under arrest.

Guess what? If an officer says your under arrest, then you better go with because its then resisting arrest.

If the cop is wrong then it will be shown, but seriously just listen to what he is saying and not resist what he's telling you to do. Its not that hard. You give respect, you get respect. You give a fight, you get a fight, don't be stupid and you won't be in this type of situation.

Russell says:

It was warranted. Listen to what the police say. Period. Some people just have a problem with following directions, it's not like he asked her to strip naked.

Plus, anyone who knows anything knows that you never step out of your car unless the officer asks you to. Also, you never go for the glovebox until the officer asks you to. You may think to yourself "I'm just going for my registration," but the officer doesn't know that. How many officers do you hear about every year getting shot over a traffic ticket? They're just protecting themselves, listen to them, get a badge number, and complain later.
