Bronx Dean Accused of Molesting Student, Title of First Novel Won't Help

From Teacher of the Year to accused kid-toucher in all of two years. At least no one can say Jonathan Huff's career track hasn't been ambitious.

Yesterday, Huff, a 40-year-old high school dean in the Bronx, was arrested and charged with molesting one of his 14-year-old students. Police say it happened Saturday at the all-boys Urban Assembly Academy for History and Citizenship for Young Men; that's where Huff allegedly lured the teenager into his office and touched him over his clothes.

Huff, in addition to being a dean and 2007 Teacher of the Year at his school, is a part-time actor and writer; in 2008 he had a book published under the name Bradley Huff called Alone Boy whose protagonist is -- wait for it -- a 14-year-old boy. Huff has also posted his resume on a website for people trying to land jobs on private islands; he lists among his interests, "Youth."

NY1 talked to a few of Huff's students and they're shocked by the arrest of a guy they say wouldn't seem capable of molesting a student. The Post meanwhile is exercising its usual level of tactful restraint. Its headline: "'Perv' Dean in HS Sex Bust."

Although for a good laugh, check out the link directly beneath the Huff story on the Post's website. The one that reads, "Do you know someone who has made New York a better place?"

Sometimes the comedy gods throw one right over the plate.

This is happening all over the country. Go to www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. This year they have documented over 350 of these types of incidents. In 2008 they found 478 of these kinds of cases.

Everyday at least one child attending a NYC public school has he rights violated by an adult. Jonathan Huff's allegation does not surprise me, because there are drunks, drug addicts, extortionists, admitted racists, sluts and morally corrupt people employed by the New York City Department of Education. And many of these people are members of the UFT. If the public had any idea about the "craziness" that takes place in NYC public schools involving inappropriate behavior between children and adults there would be protests throughout the city.

There is no need to vilify Jonathan Huff, because he will have his day in court. If he is found guilty of the charges then the brothers on the inside will deal with him accordingly. However, if he is proven innocent, he will never be able to return to his school community, because of the cloud of suspicion that will follow him for the rest of his life.

Innocent until proven guilty is not a concept the Post gets.

It sounds like the Post has him tagged as guilty...yet he was Teacher of the Year and promoted to Dean of Discipline. Why is someone not asking questions more questions? This all sounds a little off.

For the sake of everyone involved, I hope the truth comes out and EVERYONE is treated with the utmost respect... student and dean, alike. No one deserves to be publicly crucified until ALL the facts are brought forth.

My son graduated from this school. Mr. Huff was one of his favorite teachers. His care for his students seemed genuine and they all loved him. I'm not sure what to believe. I don't want to think that a child would make up an allegation like this. I also don't want to believe that someone my son and I both admired very much would be capable of doing something so disgusting and stupid. I am so sad. I had to sit down with my 19 year old son and ask him if Huff ever tried anything with him. He said no and I believe him. This is such a sad, sad situation. Innocent until proven guilty really does not mean anything in this country.

Based on everything I have read on the case and websites, Huff was obviously loved by his students and dedicated his entire life to the school and kids. Even if Huff is found not guilty...this will be with him forever. Everyone will always doubt him and his sincerity. How sad for someone that has dedicated his life to the betterment of our youth and in a place as challenging the Bronx.

He lured a student into his office to touch him over his clothes? After all these years of working with kids, THIS kid was finally the one who he just couldn't resist, and who he attacked in such a strangely tempid way? (OH, a just can't TAKE it -- I have to touch you over your clothes!...what?!?)

My BS meter's in a frenzy right now.

Seriously, why don't people get that students KNOW they have a weapon in accusations like this? We, the public, are SO quick to judge others at the drop of a hat, so ready to believe the worst.

I can't even believe some of the super serious comments on here about this.

$5 says this guy is innocent and failed this kid on a test or something.

It's a scary time to be a teacher.

Former Taft Teacher says:

This is very difficult to understand. I used to teach in that building and know two things...

1. It is not unfathomable to think that students will do anything to get out of trouble. I finally left the building for many reasons, but one big reason is that I didn't feel very safe in that building. Many students understand how the NYC discipline works and doesn't work. Many good teachers have been accused of terrible things by students who do not want to face the consequences of their poor behavior. Because of this, many, if not most, good teachers choose to leave this building.

2. This entire building, which houses several small community high schools, is such a chaotic, disordered clusterf*$^. Last year, a real fire (small, but a real fire nonetheless) was in the hall and the exit was a disaster. Many students were unaccounted for because there was no organized exit of the building. But how could you expect the schools to exit in an orderly fashion when they hold all mandatory fire drills in the morning before the building is open to students?!

I hope he is not guilty of such a terrible crime. But, Taft has been housing some dedicated teachers, but too many unprofessional and questionable teachers too.

The only surprise to me is that this type of accusation from Taft didn't make the news earlier.

William Colon says:

I was a student at The Urban Assembly Acadamy of History and Citizenship For Young Men. In addition, I was a student of Jonathan's during his first year at the school. It sickens me to my stomach that someone of great pride and education is being accused of such a crime. From knowing this man he is not only humble but a man of honesty. I am not the only one who will vouch for his character, however, if the allegations are true, then it could be assertted that Huff has "fondled" other students in the past. OUR SCHOOL is one in which we practice intimate study. For those whose mind in the gutter automatically assume a school where it is too personal. I mean that teachers care there about the welfare of the students both in and out the classroom. I believe that many students who have graduated from the school can vouch that Huff is INNOCENT !! - i am sure Huff was left alone with many other students, I was one of them, however I never sensed that character from him. Caring, yes, but never a child molestor. that is all i have to say. Other than that I am appauled by the accusations once again.
